The place is located between Potsdam and the Berlin borough of Spandau, which is part of the old West Berlin. The barracks were originally built by Nazi Germany in the late 30s and taken over by the Red Army at the end of World War II. The complex was used until 1994 when the last - then Russian, not Soviet - soldiers left Germany.

This is a building with what seems to have been a theater:


There was one large relatively undamaged building with what seems to have been a ballroom. Unfortunately the photo I took there did not turn out as I hoped, but you might get an impression from this shot which was taken next door:


We hope to go there again some time and explore more ... we only touched a small part of it so far ...

no real winter this year ... perfect day to go out for a photoshoot. there are stunning industrial ruins on the stralau peninsula, so enjoy the results
christmas was nice, with my family, seeing my little niece and nephew again, new year's was uneventful, i had a cold that kept me from really celebrating. whatever. oh and thanks again to *Lilywen for inviting me to that party, i really enjoyed it

another weekend, another rehearsal. well, not quite. this time we went outside for another photoshoot, unfortunately kreon was missing, but we were still inspired by the beautifully morbid atmosphere.

poor antigone and eurydice were freezing in their costumes (8°c outside), but they did a marvellous job. so did everyone else present. our messenger, =Lilywen, even went barefoot ("i have penguins' feet!"). haimon proved himself as grieving husband. oh, and this time we also got some pictures with tiresias, the seer.

after almost two years without much of a break, i am now travelling through new zealand. almost a week since i got here now. i am on something called the magic bus, it's one of these hop-on-hop-off buses full of backpackers, but not quite as hard-drinking hard-partying as some other buses, particularly green ones

i am now in dunedin after having crossed the new zealand alps by train and travelling down the west coast and queenstown. for now i will just randomly post pictures as they come along, not necessarily reflecting the order in which they were taken.

somehow got into the new year. nothing spectacular, but with friends, that's what matters. though i must admit that i was not very much in party mood. normally i watch the news and forget about them, but that was different.

sure i could say i did what i could by making a donation, but i kept feeling that i should be there to help. but then again ... i did the wrong training for that. if i was in surgery or emergency medicine i could do more. then again, patients also need me over here, that's true.

life comes back to normal surprisingly quickly. i still follow the news from south asia, but they are no longer the headlines. sad, but true. hope that people and countries all over the world will not forget about their promises.

as for me, i think i will go to thailand next year. they say that it would be another disaster if tourists stayed away now and i wanted to go there some time anyway. yes, that's right, *next* year. this year, unfortunately, travelling is not an option.
