10 things about my art.
10.Different parts of my style change frequently.
9. I used to draw strictly streamlined Hanna Barbara (simple shapes and black lines, the like) and looking back on that, it wasn't a good use of my time.
8.I used to copy anime, and it was really good, but then I realised that about 55% of people with no imagination use anime as an outlet for drawing pin-ups, so I switched styles.
7.I never used to copy Jhonen Vasquez, but a lot of people constantly compare my stuff to his (i don't mind).
6. I used to think Newgrounds was a good place to learn styles. That was when I was new to the internet.
5. I think painting is pretentious when there are programs that can do it faster and better.
4. I need to stop drawing girls with larger breasts. (My excuse: The girls I draw are based on ones I know... so... I guess it's a large boob festival here).
3. I have a large distate for Matt Wilson and people that act like him.
2. I hate all my old work.
1. I used to have a series named Arenamon when I was six, which was actually really creative (not the name, I stole that from pokemon).

Honestly, does it? It's been so commercialized and hyped these past few years, it's basically turning into Hollywood rehash itself. Even the most independant movies follow the same formula, more or less, of a serious dramedy with a werid twist. I will admit, I have liked some of their movies from a while back, notably Thumbsucker and Chumscrubber, but I see no reason to really find it as an inspiration for my work anymore. Hollywood has gotten too involved in it. I blame Napoleon Dynomite. I loved the movie. But only when I was the only one in my area who knew about it. Now, everybody quotes it and likes it and wears the t-shirts. But then they go right back into school and make fun of those kids. The movie has taught me that people like mainstream underground things. I swear once Wonder Showzen becomes the next big thing, I'll jump ship. I like that show because nobody else really does around here, same with Tom Goes. Once they hit massive popularity, I won't like it anymore. The charm will be gone. It's not just 'my little thing' anymore. Now everybody likes stuff that unpopular kids like. Underground, retro, and pop culture things are now the new mainstream. I guess that's the generation's culture. Once I hit adulthood, kids will be raving about the latest Sundance flick, and I'll go to the theatres to watch a regular hollywood movie in peace.

Normally animals with human features now and again is kinda fun to see, But it's ALL OVER DEVIANTART. That's all these guys draw, too. I got into an argument a while back (no brittany, not with your friend, but another jerk off) who kept saying that any animal with human characteristics is an anthro. RLY? Because I always thought that was Furry fandom (it does not always have to mean the perverted use of that). Anthropomorphism is applying any human quality to an animal or forces of nature. I don't even know why I argued about it. All I said was 'I find this art style to be creepy' and she goes off naming every popular show with talking pets and says that's the same thing. It's not. Basically what anthro authors do is use the skeletal system of a human and slap animal skin on it. I'm not implying that that's what always happens, that's just what I have seen. But what's the appeal? I just don't get it. And it's either poses or sexual positions with these things.

And for felines and other warm-blooded, backbone sportin' animals who are in the female nature, why don't anthro artists draw 6 breasts instead of two? They draw tales and ears and noses and stuff, so why don't they draw them more accurately?

I won't argue with your answers. I just want to know.

A lot of animators today that have been in the business for a while have been complaining about the fact that there is nothing 'unique' or 'different' anymore and it's 'been a big problem for a while'. Since when has animation been unique? As far as I can see it, in the haydays of Warner Brothers and Disney, basically everything they did was formulatic and familiar. That's not bad, and they made names for themselves by doing that, so of course they did some good work. But it wasn't unique. I can't pick out one cartoon from back then that was not based or modified off another's work.

John K is a great man. I respect his work and complaints about the entertainment industry and the styles animators use in the present. His idea of the perfect style is pears and squash-shaped characters all molded together into appealing figures. This is not the mainstream. Of course there are a thousand anime things today and thick black lines surround everything, and lineless characters (ala Samurai Jack) are basically floating into the mainstream, and that will soon become the only style anyone uses for a while. Trends define a time period. Every century there has been new ways to draw and new ways to animate. Anyway, back to John K. I read his blog everyday, learning from his tips. But he's not really pushing for being unique, he's pushing for drawing like classic era cartoons. This may be appealing to some, but I don't see what doing that is gonna change. If it gets popular, everyone will do it, there will be a million deviantart clubs about it (if there isn't already) and that will become mainstream. John K. will have nothing to complain about, and I will have nothing to read for 10 minutes out of the day.

Anyway, people are always complaining about 'there's nothing unique' and 'where's the creativity?'. Well, everytime a good show does come out with a rather odd-ball way of dealing with social commentary and animation, it's either ignored or cancelled. Family guy, South Park, The Simpsons, and King Of The Hill are not unique. They have the same type of format and 'offensive' way of dealing with issues. Those shows are not what I am talking about. Shows like Wonder Showzen need to be appreciated, because they are the shows that are pushing the medium to it's fullest. I have never sat down and watched 10 minutes of a cartoon version of a puppet and a chinese man saying 'patience' over and over. But after Wonder Showzen, I began to appreciate their ways of making you watch the shows. Even boring segments are basically the pinnicle of whatever South Park could do. If that series (WS) gets picked up for another season, I'll break down in the happiest of tears.

Other shows like Mission Hill, The Oblongs, Clone High, and such, are genius. They have funny episodes, marked with a creative look, and full of creativity. But notice how all of them were cancelled after one season. That's upsetting. How is that going to encourage me to make a show about something different? How is that going to encourage anyone? Shows like My Gym Partner's A Monkey dominate the airwaves because of people who put up a front about creativity and then just flop down and watch the dribble that is spit out by the defunct networks. That's why I appreciate Adult Swim (Bravo and The Detour for you other countries), because it supplies people with refreshing animation. I do not get why people bitch about that block and how 'downhill' it's gone. Those are the type of people who are too ignorant to pick out the good parts about those shows. That's really the only block where good shows thrive.

And to tell you something, I think Tom Goes To The Mayor is excellent. Pick one other show that can match it's strange, dry, depressing humor (other then Wonder Showzen). I bet you can't do it. And no BBC shows either. Something people actually watch.

Am I the only one here (I don't want to make enemies, but this is how I feel) who cannot stand generic anime and manga styles? I like unique, offbeat things. I don't like japanese animation as much, simply because there's one style, and that's what everyone does, sans a few changes in the eyes and coloring. My top 5 japanese anime/manga are series that really are just oddball and very different (one being Super Milk Chan).

I dunno. I just don't really 'get' all these communities that draw pin-ups of chibis and girls in manga form. And that's it. There's no huge deviation from their styles, no real characterizations, nothing. I'm not saying that all japanese-inspired artists are like that... but what's the point? If your stuff looks like 90% of the work out there, you really aren't making a name for yourself.

I sometimes like to draw manga, just to spread my skills. I can draw fairly well in that, get everything exactly the way it should look, but. I can't bring myself to draw it over and over. I like to mix things. That's why you'll see some expressions very manga-form, but I don't want it all like that. Right now, I'm into minimalist styles and clear-and-cut pop art. I'm researching stuff such as political cartoon styles, and crosshatching. I've tried doing coloring with Photoshop and flash, and while it looked great, it took too long. I don't like holding myself down to one thing at a time. I'll work on a few things at once, and if I like it, I'll scan it and put it up.

Drawing well is a matter of personal opinion. Drawing so that you'll be going off the beaten path is another thing. Sure, your manga-styled little girl may look awesome, but if you took her silhouette and put it with a bunch of other little girl silhouettes, would you be able to tell them apart?

Just what I feel. I can already tell there will be people swooping off the deviantart branches to pick me apart.

I was gone. I know that. But here are the reasons why. (I promise to visit every other day from now on and give comments on everything from now on, I swear)

1-I lost the art trades. Apparently all the art trades I have done for all the people who have requested were stolen and burned. It sounds weird but it's the truth. A kid thought he was funny and threw my pics into a fire. I beat his face in afterwards but I lost all of them. I was really mad.

2-The reason I haven't been here (well, next reason), is because I kept pushing it off to update other things. My plate is getting kinda full, but I'm making an effort to comment on a lot of your work. I'm going to update this and put all the stuff on here that you may have missed from my site.

3-My forum, er, my new fourm has been going smoothly, but I am trying to get new members. We only have 11. Please join. [link]

I hope this explains everything.
