Happy early Thanksgiving to the Americans in the audience, I hope everyone has fun holiday plans

It's so nice to finally be getting back into artwork, my primary focus right now is a short animated film I'm working on with two other people called "Sphere in Boxland". As of now it's about 60 percent done, we're getting there! I'm primarily responsible for matte background paintings that will be subtlety animated in layers. I've posted a handful of finished ones today I hope people enjoy the film when it's done!

Obviously easier stuff like photography is still ongoing, I find it very easy to pick my camera in good lighting situations and click away, specially with three cats around I realize though that perhaps my watchers might be getting a little tired of seeing cat photos from me all the time, so I'll try to keep that to a minimum

I also have some pieces that are works in progress, a couple fantasy and a couple Transformers. Those will get finished, but perhaps slowly. Sphere in Boxland is the big push right now. Cheers everyone!

~*~

Stuff to do:

Be a mom; visit the <strike>Grand Canyon</strike> and Yosemite; go to New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, <strike>England</strike>, Europe, Africa, China, <strike>Japan</strike>; learn to skydive; work on a major film; visit Lindsay, Sarah, Rachel, Margot, Jenny, Ti, Leah, <strike>Japan friends</strike>; check out the Burning Man festival; go to the <strike>San Diego Comic Con</strike>, Wizard World, New York Comic Con; drive a muscle car; <strike>drive a smart car</strike>; finish an original comic; make another personal animated film; learn to cook a really complex dish; climb Mt. They just kept parading out the stars! Gary Oldman, Denzel Washington, Robert Downey Junior (holy crap that man is funny, he seems like he'd be great to hang out with ), Elijah Wood, Tim Burton, and coolest of all from an animator's perspective John Lasseter of Pixar, Hayao Miyazaki (read: I was in the same room as an animation GOD, wow) and none other than Peter Jackson!! The movies I'm most excited about are Where the Wild Things Are, Sherlock Holmes, Ponyo, 9 and District 9. These films are going to be fantastic and I can't wait to see them! So yeah, highly enjoyed my con experience despite the massive crowds. I was rather tired of humanity by the end of four days >_>;;

In other news, real life is just very busy for me right now. I know I haven't been producing much non-photographic art recently, which sucks but is a side effect of just how busy things have been. Between being in a serious relationship, my music commitments (I have a koto performance coming in October with some difficult music in it), moving to a new apartment next month (gah, so much to pack up and sell!), work, freelance and an ongoing animation project I just haven't had the free painting time I had before. I'd really wanted to enter the TFW2005 Transformer contest but wasn't able to finish my entry in time I intend to finish that and a number of other pieces in progress, but it's going to take a little while I think. After the move is done next month I'm hoping I can get back to something resembling a normal work schedule and start producing more regularly again.

Thank you all for your patience and all the wonderful faves, watches and comments. I hope the wait won't be too long!

~*~

Stuff to do:

Be a mom; visit the <strike>Grand Canyon</strike> and Yosemite; go to New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, <strike>England</strike>, Europe, Africa, China, <strike>Japan</strike>; learn to skydive; work on a major film; visit Lindsay, Sarah, Rachel, Margot, Jenny, Ti, Leah, <strike>Japan friends</strike>; check out the Burning Man festival; go to the <strike>San Diego Comic Con</strike>, Wizard World, New York Comic Con; drive a muscle car; <strike>drive a smart car</strike>; finish an original comic; make another personal animated film; learn to cook a really complex dish; climb Mt. Calger459 is a handle I've used since high school, Calger's the name of a griffin character I came up with. Turns out it's a real last name. Who knew?

If possible, your age?
29, 30 in a few days (eep!)

When did you start drawing?
About 3rd grade, haven't stopped since!

Which hand do you use for drawing?
Lefty! One of only two in my family.

Which is easier to draw - male or female?
I have an easier time with women, probably because I am one My men tend to come out a little effeminate, which got me points off in Character Design class a lot >_>

Which is easier to draw - long hair or short hair?
Hmm I suppose long hair, but it really depends on the style. The hardest part for me isn't the hair, it's the lighting and shading on the hair. Surprisingly hard to get right!

Is it easier to draw the head facing towards the right or the left?
Hmm...you know I don't really know, I've never noticed if I do it more one way or the other. I think I tend to have my characters facing right...is it because I'm a lefty?

Is it easier to draw the side view of the face or the front view?
No view of the face is easier than any other, I've found. Each view has its own special challenges.

What do you have problems in drawing?
Characters interacting with each other instead of just standing there or posing dramatically, especially interacting with backgrounds. It's something I'm working on

What do you like to draw?
Fantasy animals mostly, but giant robots are fun too I like drawing humans the least, but only because they're hard; you can't really fudge with proportions unless you're drawing an alien of some sort. I'm getting better though! I also like painting matte backgrounds a lot

Are you a traditional artist or a digital artist?
I used to be traditional until computers and tablets came along. Now I'm pretty much digital.

Where do you start drawing from?
Sketched volume shapes that define the pose and proportions of the character. I usually start very loose and rough, then refine from there.

What is your drawing habit that you are aware of?
Not quite sure what this means...

What do you keep in mind when you do lineart?
I generally don't do lineart pieces, my style is much more organic and painterly. When I do cel-style lineart drawings though for animation, I just try to keep things clean and tight. Not an easy thing.

Any tips for coloring/shading?
Study color theory. No, really, it's amazingly helpful. And observe real objects in different lighting situations, use reference. Only when you've studied the real thing enough can you do it out of your head convincingly.

How long does it take to finish a piece of art?
I sketch very fast, maybe 10 minutes average for something, often less. Finished pieces take much longer, depending on how complicated the piece is and whether I change my mind on things halfway though My finished Transformers pieces with full backgrounds average 15-20 hours from start to finish. I do want to work on getting faster overall.

What music do you listen to while you draw?
I love soundtracks, I have a "soundtrack favorites" playlist on my iPod that I'm always adding to, and I put it on shuffle. I also like classic rock, assorted newer rock stuff on the radio, and classical music I also like having movies on in the background when I'm in the mood for that. I already have several finished 'bots to show!

TFW2005 & Josh Nizzi Present: Design a Transformer Contest

So 'bots I have finished designs for are Perceptor, Wheeljack, Bluestreak, Beachcomber and Alpha Trion. 'bots I could finish up for this: Prowl, Grimlock, Swoop, Shockwave. Are there any in particular you guys would like to see?

And yes, I did see ROTF and...well...it is what it is, I suppose. I liked parts of it a lot, but overall the story was a nigh-incomprehensible trainwreck that refused to take itself at all seriously, even for five minutes. I got the distinct impression that Michael Bay was flipping us all off personally for 2+ hours. Nevertheless I didn't hate it, and will probably go to see it again. They did a fantastic job in particular with Soundwave and his Cassettes. Ravage was awesome.

~*~

Stuff to do:

Be a mom; visit the <strike>Grand Canyon</strike> and Yosemite; go to New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, <strike>England</strike>, Europe, Africa, China, <strike>Japan</strike>; learn to skydive; work on a major film; visit Lindsay, Sarah, Rachel, Margot, Jenny, Ti, Leah, <strike>Japan friends</strike>; check out the Burning Man festival; go to the San Diego Comic Con, Wizard World, New York Comic Con; drive a muscle car; <strike>drive a smart car</strike>; finish an original comic; make another personal animated film; learn to cook a really complex dish; climb Mt. It was absolutely amazing. I'll repeat some of the explanation I put for one of the photos: We were out on NASA's causeway, about 6 miles from the launchpad. Not a bad view at all At first you don't hear the rocket; it takes the sound a couple minutes to cross that distance, but you can hear it coming, like distant thunder that keeps getting louder, then you feel it in your chest. Reminded me of a fireworks finale, deafening noise and all! Then the shuttle just kept on going until it was a tiny light in the distance. Awe inspiring!

This is the shuttle Atlantis, STS-125 mission to the Hubble Space Telescope. Not only is it the last mission to Hubble, it's also supposed to be Atlantis' final flight. So sad! She's a beautiful ship

I have several other photos posted, I'll put some more of them up tomorrow.

There are a couple items that are a little outdated and will be fixed in the near future, including the "Reel" section. I need to recut my demo reel (always an exercise in torture, but it must be done) and create new portfolio samples.

All in all though I'm rather proud of myself for figuring out how to adapt a standard CSS template to my own use The Flash Gallery application is also very nice, and so easy to update! The only flaw I've found in it so far is it doesn't do well on slower connections, basically anything under broadband. I'd love to make it more accessible, unfortunately this is just a graphics and video-heavy site and I've shrunk the images about as much as I'm willing to. Still, I am open to suggestions from those of you with slower internet.

To see the site, click here, [link]

Thanks, guys!

Enjoy, guys!

This was my first chance to really use my Nikon D60, and I am in love with this camera now. Trip highlights: the Knight Rider Festival, exploring some of the big casinos including the Luxor and MGM Grand, Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon (Amazing place, I must go again!), forests of Joshua trees in the desert, and Sigfried and Roy's Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat in the Mirage hotel.
Wow, it's been a long time since I updated my journal here, sorry guys. I've been salaried at my Flash animation job for nearly half a year now, it's pretty awesome I actually really enjoy my work there as I get to do design and some illustration too, and the people are awesome. Since September my free time has been wrapped up in a freelance animation job, which is at long last almost done! I'll be posting the art for it here once it's all finished and I have the go-ahead from the client.

On the fandom side of things, my muse has been quite firmly stolen from Rurouni Kenshin and kidnapped by giant alien robots...aka Transformers. Designing robots is fun! However, I've made a promise myself to not only update here more often, but to have more variety in my subject matter and style (I've recently started working with the pencil tool in Adobe Illustrator and it's AWESOME!).

Also career-wise I want to start making moves to the next step, which is the actual animation industry. What this freelance job has shown me though is that while I like animation, it's the design and storyboarding portion of it that I really love to do. I'm going to start looking into doing storyboard tests for various companies, and see where it gets me. By the time I get one of those I should have more than enough $$ saved to make a good move to one of the coasts. We shall see.

So, a busy 2008 ahead!

Hey everyone, just finished up a freelance job that took the entire summer, our client hasn't given us permission to post it to portfolios yet, but it's up on YouTube, here's the link:
[link]

Unless you're in to Ohio politics it probably won't make much sense, but hopefully the animation's still enjoyable. I'm hoping I can post the higher-quality Flash version here soon.

In the meantime, school's started again, and in Big News, I've landed an internship!! It's with a company in Columbus who do commercial work,
[link] I start next week in the graphics department. I hope it'll be cool Because it demands 20 hours a week, it's going to be a challenge to do that, my classes AND finish my student film, but I'm determined to make it all work. Somehow.

Tonight I finished a piece of concept art for my film, it'll give you an idea of the final look. It's a combination of 3D (backgrounds, clouds) and 2D animation (characters). I'm really excited to make it, I'll try to post the animatic up here so you can all watch it and give feedback.

I promised one a day, no? Which one will is be today? Hmmm...didn't do any finished work today in RL, instead it was all story-based thumbnail storyboards for one of my classes. Lots of fun, but difficult. I'll probably post some of those boards here when they're more finished. I'll go post today's pic now...err, not that I've chosen it yet...

Well, such as it is. School is keeping me pretty busy right now. I'm going to try to add a piece every day, and it'll be random stuff. Most will be older pieces that I really like, but when I complete new stuff I feel is worthy that will get posted as well. Today's piece: one of my favorite photographs from my year-long trip to Japan. Enjoy!

Well, a newbie to Deviant Art. Not much here yet. I have a well-established personal gallery (see website link) and an active Live Journal (username calger459). I'll be posting newer art here. Right now I'm an animation student, so Flash versions of my assignments will go here too.
