Saw The Dark Knight a while back. Yeah that movie pretty much lives up to all the hype. I'd have to say it's the best superhero movie I think I've ever seen.

Certainly the darkest. And all the actors were amazing, especially that one that that nobody can stop talking about. There's just something about the Joker that clicks with so many people, myself included (like they said in the Tim Burton movie, "Love that Joker!"). Heath Ledger could easily win an Oscar for one of his last roles.

I'm very curious as to what there gonna do with part 3, 'cause the Joker is such a powerful character, and Ledger was such a good Joker, how could they possibly top that? Part of me wants to see the role recast, just to see the guy again. But how do you recast one of the best performances in recent memory?

So what other dark, gritty superhero movie could possibly get me more excited than TDK?

Wactchmen! [link] Oh yes! I'm a little worried, because all adaptations of Alan Moore stories so far have landed somewhere between missing the point entirely (V For Vendetta) and utter crap (LXG). But so far, things are looking good. Very good if the trailer is any indication.

Here's hoping!

~c

(also, 900 pageviews, WOOT! Thanks, folks! This means the Chinese will be less able to view American cartoons and Japanese anime than it already is.

But at the same time, the Chinese censors have decided, in the best interest of the psychology and well-being of the children, of course, to crackdown on horror and mystery, especially those that "involve alien-looking characters and fictional story telling, both specifically plotted for the sole purpose of terror". This follows news stories back when officials went absolutely ape shit over Death Note, six months before the first primetime ban went into effect. A foreign fantasy film like Harry Potter, for example, can still be released, as long as all the monsters and scary bits are cut out.

This is, in my personal opinion, bullshit. I believe that fantasy, horror, cartoons, and all that good stuff help make life a little more bearable, and are considerably less damaging psychologically than, say, living under an oppressive government that doesn't understand the concept of freedom of expression. China has done a lot of reprehensible thing in the past, but when it starts to mess around with my cartoons, thats when I draw the line!

In other news: I'm still alive, despite not having written a journal in over two months. Kudos, Chinese censors! You finally gave me something to talk about!

EDIT 3/20: Hmm. With all the crap going down in Tibet right now, my little rant about a few cartoon shows suddenly seems so much more trivial now.

December is here and I am still alive. Looking back now, this has been a long, strange month and I'm glad to say its over.

Okay, so the big, sad news first: Several weeks ago, we learned that my ex-step dad, my brother's father, a man whom neither of us had seen in a little over four years, had died. There were a lot of really mixed emotions when we found out. The man was an alcoholic and all-around twisted person for much of the time I knew him. He's a major reason why we moved away from our hometown. And he was always part of this lingering fear in the background, at least for me. But I lived with the man for almost ten years, he's the father of my brother and my mom's ex-husband, so how could I not feel sad?

So we went to the funeral, saw some people we hadn't seen in an even longer time, and said our hellos and goodbyes. During the service, I realized just what an influence he had been on my life. He had taken us on a lot of vacations and camping trips to places we probably wouldn't have gone otherwise, had been a perfect anti-role model, and had introduced us to Tolkein. He could sometimes be pretty cool, and was rarely ever boring.

My brother and I were pall bearers. It was a little strange to us that he had such a Christian burial, as he had seemed so anti-christian in life. But his family claimed that he had cleaned up near the end, so I don't really know. The whole thing was just so very surreal. After the funeral, we visited several other family members, played a therapeutic game of Guitar Hero, and then came home.

So that was last month's major event. Also in November, I finished my welding class, lost Nanowrimo by about 40,000 words, experienced my first real Black Friday in Wal-Mart at about 3-6 AM, got a big new T.V. that turns on and off randomly, saw Beowulf in 3D (but not on Imax) and finished the Harry Potter series. So yeah, I'm looking forward to December, when I'll go back down to my hometown and spend a little time with my family down there, and Christmas is just around the corner.

Happy Holidays,
~C.

(P.S., I don't really know if that stupid mood icon below really sums up my mood, since I don't really know what I feel like at the moment. I can never get those things exactly where I want them. I feel more drained than gloomy at the moment. Whatever.)

So a friend of mine was helping his neighbor clean out his garage a few days ago when he found an old laserdisc player. The neighbor was gonna throw the thing out, so Justin (the friend) asked if he could have it. He got it, and dozens of old movies that came with it.

These discs are MASSIVE! They're bigger than your head! Its like a cross between a record player and a dvd player, and I can't believe I've never seen one of these things before. And the movies have held up a lot better than vhs tapes from back then (early 90s).

About the movies: most of them didn't look that great. A lot of Charles Bronson and Roger Corman. But there were a few that stood out: Back to the Future, The Crow, and Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster (further proof that the Japanese had better drugs than we did even back in the 60s).

But I was most excited about finding Angel Heart, a movie about which I had heard Good Things. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, I never got to see the end of this really creepy film.

De Niro is terrific in this. See for yourself:[link]
I still don't have a power cord for my scanner.

I finally got tired of looking at the same journal entry every day so it's time for a change.

I've been taking a welding class. Don't really know if I'm that good at it, but at $18 an hour, it wouldn't exactly hurt to know a thing or two.

I haven't drawn a whole lot lately, but what I do have will have to wait until I get 300 pageviews and/or find an adapter for my recently rediscovered scanner (instead of using my friend's).

Oh, and I realized that I accidentally stole this girl's name [link] I finally got around to apologizing, but I'm still embarrassed that it didn't occur to me that someone else might actually have that name when it was unavailable to me the first time! 6. Lately, no matter when I go to bed, I always wake up at 4 p.m. or later.
7. I use #2 pencils because they're usually the ones lying around.
8. Despite being a huge fan of Neil Gaiman, I have only read one volume of The Sandman.
...
Alrighty then, who will I tag now?
