It's been a long, hard - and, at times, a very cold - 10 years since my ex and I split; and I've longed and yearned for this to eventually happen. Now the day is near. Tomorrow I finally meet in a person a woman with whom I went to high school, 35-37 years ago! Back then, she didn't even know I existed, although we were both in band together; but she was also a cheerleader, as well as a National Honor Society member, and I merely a band geek. I admired (and secretly lusted after) her way back then; yet as if our stars had finally aligned - after all this time - and in a different and more serendipitous way than either of us expected (and in spite of the use of a number of different online dating sites by each of us - a couple of which we were both on, but were never matched up) we "met" via email, soon added frequent - and hours' long - multiple phone calls each day to our repertoire, and have fallen deeply in love.

Well after living here on the water for a year and a half, I finally have a boat, to go along with my house barge. It's so great to be able to get out and explore what I've only been able to look at from where I'm moored! Unfortunately, the small, used Boston Whaler I bought (through Craigslist - though allegedly from a "friend") turned out to need a - very expensive! - new motor The boat is now at the marina next door, getting re-fitted with a brand new Yamaha 40 hp EFI motor, and by sometime tomorrow she should be good to go!

The picture above was my first sunset shot from out on the bay; it's a view of Hempstead bay, with the waterfront houses of Bellmore, NY barely visible along the shoreline.

At approximately 260', this is the highest waterfall in NY state. I haven't been up this way in about 26 years, and was able to visit both the bottom of the falls, and the very top! While inquiring of a park ranger at a campground in North South Lake Park, near the top of the falls, as to where the path was, he said "That trail no longer exists. We're not even allowed to talk about that trail. Too many people have died there."

By studying a couple of maps, and utilizing some dead reckoning and reading of the geography, we were able to find our way to the top - and nobody died...

Looking up the staircase of the Glen Iris Inn at Letchworth State Park, NY.

I took my first vacation in almost three years this weekend. It was much shorter, but much sweeter then the last one I had. I spent the first 2 of the 4 days at Letchworth State Park, near Geneseo, N.Y., in a cabin with a wood-burning stove. A friend from high school - whom I haven't seen in about 36 years - joined me for the second day. The park - the so-called "Grand Canyon of the East" - is fantastic! I'll upload pictures here soon.

The capper was helping my daughter Caitlin move home after her junior year of college: She showed me the campus - and the town - and it was the first time I got to see where she's spent most of her time these last three years. Between that, and the improved communications with her twin sister Cristin, I'm feeling like daddy again - finally

This photo (which I personally love, but no more than most of the other deviations that I have posted here) has now received well over 800 views! While that may not seem like a lot to many of you for one deviation, it has received way more exposure than most of my photos. I don't understand where all this attention is coming from (not that I mind it, of course). I'm guessing that it's appearing on someones site who gets much more 'traffic' than I do. It has been so nice to have regained some semblance of normal communication with both my daughters! It has been so long in coming... I feared for the longest time - despite reassurances from many that they would one day come around - that the situation would remain bleak for many years (as it has remained so for someone I know, who has been estranged from his son for about 15 years!). The thought of potentially being estranged from my daughters for anywhere near that long was almost too hard to bear. While our relationships are not what they used to be, they are definitely improving - and for that I am very grateful!

My father passed away at 3:15 this morning. He went peacefully, after a long battle with cancer. This picture is from when he was in the hospital in early December. His last days were spent at a Hospice here in Columbia, South Carolina.

However, when I sign on to dA from the computers at 3 or 4 of the places where I work they look very dark. How do they look to you all? Maybe I need to adjust my laptop's display...

I'm sitting watching the snow fall on the bay outside my windows during slack tide, and also upon the large island across from me. There's a duck hunter about 200 yards away in his boat (to whose shotgun blasts I awoke this morning). As I write, he's waded into the bay to retrieve his latest kill. I guess he left his dog home today. Maybe he's just tending to his decoys - I'm not sure. Thankfully, duck hunting season ends in a week. No more waking to the sounds of gunfire!

A hawk flew past a little earlier, searching for prey. I saw one a couple of weeks ago attack a flock of starlings. I'm not sure if he (or she) was successful. About 20 minutes later I saw a hawk fly past my local train station; I believe it was a red tailed hawk. I've been seeing a couple of Great Blue Herons, and two days ago I saw a Hooded Merganser for the first time this winter. I spotted two pair of them last night floating about 25 yards away, near the pilings to my east.

On another front, I've finished covering for a buddy of mine at Fox 5. He'd been out since Halloween for medical reasons, and I'm now finally enjoying some downtime. I went to see my ex and my daughter Caitlin sing and play guitar last night at a local coffee house. My daughter Cristin was there too, as well as my inlaws and another half dozen or so of my ex's family. I hadn't seen a couple of them in over 9 years. I felt a little awkward there at first (I went alone) and was thinking of leaving early, but I stuck it out and I'm glad that I did! Hopefully it's another small step on a return trip to some sort of normal relationships with my daughters...

Footnote: My favorite pair of swans are back! The female who has been banded, and tagged EA 98 (and whose pictures I've posted here previously) and her mate returned a few days ago. I'll wave to her from inside my barge, as she and her partner swim past, and she'll stop, turn around and look up at me. Is it ok to flirt with a female of another species, or would that be considered fowl play? Things that make you go Hmmm.....

So a new year of life begins, to go along with my newly refinished exterior - of my house barge, that is. After a stormy, rainy, misty, foggy weekend - most of which I spent working - today is sunny, warm and beautiful! I'm off today and have a few chores to do, as well as a routine doctors' appointment, but I do want to get a couple of things done on the barge. I'm also being treated to dinner tonight by a good friend. I hope and trust that this will be my best year yet!

I spent all day yesterday cleaning up after the mess that was made in here Wed. and Thu. of last week, but the madness continues tomorrow. Hopefully all the work will be continued by the end of the week. I'll still have a lot of finish work to complete on the inside, but the outside will be all done!

Still waiting and hoping for that one special woman to be able to share all this with...I have a number of female friends (as I much prefer women to men lol) but still not "the one" who can make my pulse quicken.

Today the roofers showed up to start re-roofing my house barge. I got a great price, and they're doing great work so far. They probably won't finish until Saturday morning, however, as they're ripping off the 24 year old wood shingles, and doing some other things, as they go. Also, the front is very steep - it's an A frame - but between tomorrow and Saturday morning it should all get done.

My biggest surprise for the day was when Caitlin called this morning, as I was running some errands! She's having problems with her cell phone, so I met her at the Verizon store. We had a good 30-40 minutes of together time, and it was fantastic! I spoke with her mother later on, and I'm hoping that both Caitlin and Cristin will pay me a visit this Sunday. I'm keeping my fingers (toes, arms, legs, eyes etc.) crossed in the hopes that it will happen.

Here's an update on the wildlife. I've been seeing a lot of green herons lately, along with egrets, black skimmers, the occasional osprey and other less noteworthy fowl. *I forgot to mention when I first posted this journal update that I also saw three Glossy Ibises on the marshy island across from me. I haven't seen any of these in about 20 years!* On the aquatic side there are lots of minnows around, along with an occasional splash from (most probably) a young snapper. I saw my first ever live whelk (it's a mollusk) crawling along the bay bottom just outside my front door yesterday, and today I saw a very large horseshoe crab rooting around in the bottom muck in the vacant marina next door. My roofer's daughter caught a porgy off my floating dock this morning (No Bess - or bass - yet though...), and I went swimming for the first time this year right out my back door and off my floating dock. The water was delicious, though the tidal currents are strong, so it's wisest to swim into the current first. I finished work on the stainless steel pool ladder I installed for easy exit from the bay, so one doesn't run the risk of getting shredded by barnacles and mussel shells. I ended up going swimming 5 different times today, in between errands, chores and work on the ladder. I'm finally starting to enjoy all that water-top living offers. The only thing I'm lacking is some sort of boat or kayak so I can explore the bay. Oh, that and a good first mate

Two new birds for my list of firsts here on the barge: Green herons and Glossy Ibis'.

I survived the Fourth of July firework celebrations, with my wood-shingled roof intact!

I bought a used, stainless steel pool ladder on Craig's list Saturday for $20! They normally sell for about $200. Now I'll be able to go swimming in the bay and have a way to climb back onto my floating dock

I'm talking about two kinds of death today. The most recent being my beloved, little, 3.2 megapixel, Canon Digital Elph! It passed away last night, as I was shooting the full moon - my first attempt at using a tripod and long exposure time with my trusted, about 4 year old, photographic friend. Must have been the full moon. I've been thinking about getting a new camera, so maybe this is nature's way of telling me that it's time, whether I'm financially ready to or not. Oh well, I guess that's why credit cards were invented.

The other kind of death I experienced is the death of a relationship that I really thought, as they say on Broadway, "had legs" - that is, I really felt that this one might have been the one I've been looking for. I've tried very hard - for over two months - to really make this one work, but in the end I had to end it. I would rather be alone than be in the wrong relationship for all of (or mostly for) the wrong reasons.

So, it's time to move forward in pursuit of two new relationships; a new camera and a new love. As for my daughters, there's nothing new on that front at all. I spoke with my ex the other day, as she's the only conduit I have when it comes to our offspring, and she said she would talk with them. In the meantime, I must remain (as always, and as hard as that is for me) patient.

It's been quite a ride these last twelve months - downhill, uphill, down and up a couple more times; and then a long, gradual, incline upwards that has continued into this bright, new year. A year ago on this date I was in a hospital on the second day of what would prove to be a two week stay - the first, of three stays of varying durations, over the ensuing months - and did not earn my first paycheck until February 13th.

I also was able to get away for a three week "road trip" that was, as I like to try to explain, sort of like "Easy Rider" squared, and then squared yet again! I learned much about myself - and made tentative plans for the rest of my life - during those three weeks spent mostly alone in my new-er car, driving from N.Y. to S.C. and back.

I had to endure a few more periods of extended unemployment, for a couple of different reasons, two court appearances - in two different court systems - as well as two different periods of disability and one six week stretch of being on Workers' Compensation. My twin daughters both left the proverbial nest (of which I've since returned to, after a seven year absence) and flew away to two different college campuses, in two different states.

Most importantly of all: On September 3rd I achieved, and continue to enjoy (for the first time that I've ever enjoyed, as opposed to merely endured) an extended state of sobriety, which is now well into its' fifth month.

Finally, I discovered dA - and the many benefits that it has provided to me - over the last 9 months or so.

So a big thank you to all who have viewed my submissions, commented on my work and, in a couple of cases, become my friends. I am truly blessed and can only hope that 2007 continues on this long, gradual uphill climb towards my ever-brightening future!

In fact, I was so sick with bronchitis for the first couple of weeks of the new year last year that I honestly don't recall too much of what happened during those first approximately 11 days. After that, the memories are all too clear - and painful, except for the lost week that I spent in the hospital, starting on Jan. 15th...

But that was then and this is now, and now is so much better than then - always!

I haven't even seen Caitlin since sometime in May, I believe, and that was just briefly - backstage - after her very last high school chorus performance.

Her sister Cristin did not come, and I had not expected her to. I've been made to understand that I was 'lucky' Caitlin even made an appearance here.

Here. Home.

Heart. Hearth. Hurt. History...

Her boyfriend came by after about an hour to pick her up to take her to his relatives house for dinner. He didn't even come to the door. He stayed in the car.
She said goodbye. She walked out the front door alone.

Alone. Again.

Afterglow. Anti-climatic. After-effects. Apart. Agony. Anguish. Ashes.

Who can assist in the healing

What could have been done differently

Where will it all end

How can I survive until then

When will the pain abate

Too many questions

Patience

Time

Too few answers.
