Ever since I submitted the poem "For Her" I have been plagued with concerns regarding how best to present it in a way that is safe for survivors of abuse without diminishing the effect of the end of the piece... If I had posted this at the forums I used to frequent I would have posted what we called a "trigger warning". These words would be an indication that the content could potential trigger bad memories/flashbacks etc and gives the reader the opportunity to decide if they are mentally safe enough to read it.
However, the problem I have here at DA is that the audience and purpose of the site is very different from the forums I attended. For one, some people wouldn't understand what "trigger warning" means without an explaination. One way I attempted to get around this issue was to mark the poem with a "Mature Content" warning. In the description for this category it states "Warning- Choosing warning will mark that your work contains Mature Content but will leave the option to see it in the viewers hands." I had hoped this would be sufficient but I'm starting to be concerned, based on recent comments.
For those of you whom have read the poem: Does it prompt you with "mature content" warning when you go to read it? do you think that a statement such as "trigger warning" would take away from the realization of the double meaning at the end? Any suggestions?
Has any one else had an issue like this? If so how did you address this?
