Well, that was a good attempt. I swore 1.5'ish years ago I was done with DA, but then it had to go and get better.

I've gone through my deviations inbox (that was a day's work in itself!), added perhaps a hundred new faves, left a couple of comments... To the couple thousand messages and journal entries I've missed, I thank y'all very much but there's no way in the world I'd have been able to reply to everything :: I'll try to keep up from now on!

To catch everyone up, I'm now living in Austin, TX set to start a job in a local animation studio. I just moved here about a week or two ago, still gettin' settled in, and I just got internet hooked up in the last two days. Interesting times.

It's good to be back!

It was a trial by fire too, 'cuz I had just finished another chore and was minding my own business on the lot when some people came up to me and said they'd chosen a tree. I'd watched enough to have a rough idea of what was involved, so I said sure. Next thing I knew I was on a ladder trying to untie a 16-foot tree from the rope securing it, very nearly getting getting pulled down with it when it did come free, dragging it to the front, ramming it through the wrapping machine, lifting it onto their truck and tyin' it down, and all without work gloves cuz I had to take them off to untie the rope and never got a chance to go back for 'em >.>

The highlight of the day was getting a 17-foot-tall Christmas tree through the 2-foot-wide tube of the wrapping contraption. That was like trying to get the baby back in; it took four guys working in concert to get it through, and even then it wasn't easy. And then the people who chose it went off to have lunch, sayin' they'd come back for it later. When I clocked out they still hadn't returned; I don't know whether they ever did >.> Not every tree was such a chore, and it was rewarding in the sense that the people we talked to really appreciated our service over the experiences they'd had in Lowe's and such places, but still a day later my arms, hands, and feet are shot and you can still see where the sap has stained my skin.

I dunno what wage my dad signed me up for, but I'm pretty sure I earned it.

(of course, I'll probably be giving most of it right back to him because I lost his best knife O.o)

That aside, what'll I do over the winter? I'll relax for a week, because I've been instructed to do so. I'll draw. I'll eat when I want to, and maybe even cook since I'll have the option. I'll work on that comic. I'll model, and animate, and if I'm smart I'll walk into Senior Project II with half my animation already done. Mebbe I'll buy a Wii. Mebbe. Cheapest of the new consoles it may be, and the most enticing and innovative, and from what I hear the most stable, the best supplied, the most accurately represented, and the most fun, but I still can't really afford it.

Finals were kickass. I finished my Anthropology exam in a half-hour, I worked 'til 6 coding a webpage to present my Wilson model on and then couldn't present it 'cuz the professor didn't bring his laptop (I e-mailed it to everyone right after class though. No-one's replied.), and presented by Senior Project stuff smoothly then went for Mexican food and Irish beer.

By the way, remember me talking last journal about my having to read Edith Wharton? Yesterday I went to Ex Libris to trade in my books, and while they took everything else they refused to accept The Portable Edith Wharton. They had all and more than they needed. I guess I wasn't the only guy looking forward to getting rid of that one O.o

Well, 'til next month I'd like to say that now that I'm out of school I'll have more time to devote to DA, but then, I said that at the beginning of the last break too O.o

-I finished my finals, naturally. A's in all my classes last quarter. I'm really happy about that, 'cuz I really wasn't expecting Moorshead to think any more highly of my Concept final than he had any of my other work through the quarter O.o

-After that I came back home. We'd fallen on some rough times, so no cable and limited computer time. This is the main reason I was gone, 'cuz I didn't wanna try to sift around DA on a 56k modem

-My aunt got married last month! I was a scripture reader, and later on the bartender for the wedding party. Great fun had by all

-I've been cleaning up the house ever since. We've converted our storage room into Kitty's room, cuz she'll be moving with us in a couple weeks!

-Speaking of , she's graduated! She is now Frau Sabrina Katherine Mustelidae IV, PhD! Go on, congratulate her! And while you're at it, ask how the heck she managed that at 18 years old O.o

-Right at the end of the quarter, literally the night before I came home, my brother smashed his car. He was unhurt, but the car was a loss. I ended up donating mine to him, and for the past month I've been wheel-less. I just got my beautiful Jeep back on Wednesday. Still stuck around the house though; I can't afford to gas it back up. I had to drive all the 9-hour distance there-and-back getting it there and all the 9-hour there-and-back distance back; my penance for being a nice guy O.o

-It seems 95mb.com folded. They did so without informing me, so for a good while I was unwittingly linking people to a hub of porn sites that had taken over my domain O.o I guess with a name like "Animated Beaver" it was bound to happen eventually. If anybody knows a good free/cheap web provider, please tell me!

...That about covers the BIG news. Oh, and if you're wondering why I'm back now, we got an unexpected windfall and restored our cable, at least for now Ah, but you guys wanna see art, not hear my life story. Lemme get to uploading...

Rules : The 1st player of this "game" starts with the topic "6 weird habits/things about yourself" and people who get tagged need to write a journal about their 6 weird habits/things as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose the next 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don't forget to leave a comment that says "you are tagged" in their devpage comments and tell them to read yours.... I'll get to article II of those rules if I care enough to.

1) I have a really bad habit of being easily distracted. For example I'll jump online to check my SCAD e-mail, or look for a tutorial, and when Firefox opens I'll just click the PAvP Forums link or an online comic or DA out of habit and surf around here an there, then 40 minutes later I'll remember why I got on in the first place. If I could just FOCUS, I prob'ly wouldn't be as busy as I make myself out to be O.o

2) I haven't uploaded much lately in the way of drawings but I do draw. It's just that lately I haven't had time to do much that's refined enough to bother uploading (scribbled storyboards and such). Also there's Shoujo Phonebook comics, which I may well get in trouble for positng here since it is published material. I do other drawings too, on occasion, but those are for Kitty's eyes only O.o

3) My favorite candy is Skittles. They're pretty fattening and $.75 a bag, though, so I haven't had them in forever. Between laundry and candy, I've made my choice.

4) I do not, nor will I ever have a single favorite movie. I can give you a textbook's worth of movies I love, but I can't picture there being one single perfect movie for all occassions.

5) My brand is Sam Adam's. It has a bold flavor, great body, a great finish, and even down to the color it's everything I've ever wished for in a beer. Guinness has a good flavor, but it's a bit bitter for my tastes and the everlasting foam annoys me. Tried Corona last night; that's a good beer too. Seeing as I hate most domestic beers, it's actually kind of odd that one would be my absolute favorite.

6) I live right next door to a place that sells good pizza, with a lunch special of 2 slices and a drink for $3. This, and this alone, makes Turner Annex a great dorm to be in.

Spent the past 5 or 6 days grooming the place; apparently my spring break was so dull I decided to actually update my website for the first time in two years O.o

However, I listed off in my head the myriad reasons I stopped updating it in the first place... Suck-ass Geocities hosting turning away 10 people every hour, tedious to update, galleries that didn't encompass what I was doing, a design I drew up 5 years ago... Soo, I tored the whole thing down and started over.

Took in the last leg of the parade and then I headed for River Street. Once I got through the gates and in there it was awesome. Lots'a live music, beer EVERYWHERE, lines coming out of every bar and pub and games an food all over the place, and I got to watch the pumping ships as they were dying the river green. Only problem was that the only bar without a cover charge didn't have a lot going on, and since I couldn't seem to get in touch with any'a my friends I left early. No sense getting drunk alone, ya know? Came home, lurched my buzzed and exhausted self into a pizza place that just opened beside my dorm, then rested up. I kinda wanted to go out for Round 2, but I still couldn't get any'a my buddies to pick up the phone

All in all, a fun day. Now for a loong slow week alone; my friends and roommate are all outta town for spring break...

Okay, here's a recap of my quarter thus far:

I started a fairly big animation project, and while finishing it within this quarter was an admirable goal it was also probably an unrealistic one. Nevertheless I am trying, and now I need to try much harder because I slacked off too much earlier. I also have had matte painting stuff to do, the result of which I'll upload tonight if I remember, and anatomy stuff that's further eaten at my time. Incedentally, I haven't started the Anatomy final project yet and it's due Monday O.o

So, that's what's going on in class. I've also turned 21 since my last entry, so I have the permissions to get drunk now but not the means The birthday was pretty darn good; got a bunch of well-wishes, got a birthday present -- a photograph of my lovely Sabrina -- then ordered pizza + hot wings and enjoyed a night of anime with a bunch'a buds.

At the Savannah Film Festival I saw Secret of NIMH, a truly excellent movie if you haven't seen it, and an indy horror/thriller called Feast that was depraved but a heck of a lot'a fun. I also saw Supersize Me in Anatomy, and since then I've been straightening out my eating habits. Haven't touched a cheeseburger since, and yogurt and fruits have bacome a staple in my diet, but they'll never overtake pizza or the Byte Cafe buffalo chicken sandwiches.

Also, someone stole my phone Tuesday. I'm pissed about that, and I'll turn in a police report tonight if no-one's forked it over to Lost & Found.

Anyways, that's my news. Maybe one day I'll figure out how to keep myself in the DevArt community; I really am sorry for phasing out as often as I do.

Due to the collapse of a two-block-long stretch of levee, 80% of the city of New Orleans is now underwater, some as deep as 20 feet. If the levees give way any further, the entire city will be submerged. The mayor has projected the death toll to be in the hundreds or thousands, and that it'll take years to restore the city. If New Orleans wasn't a city of ghosts before, it certainly is now.

That was just the beginning, though. The states of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi were ravaged, 75% of homes and structures have roof and/or structural damage, and entire towns are reported to have been wiped off the face of the Earth. There is no power, no running water, interstates and roads are inaccessable. The Deep South is now a wilderness.

In Louisiana, officials so far have not even tried to estimate how many people were killed in the storm. The U.S. Coast Guard has so far reported 1,259 rescues, but hundreds more likely were trapped or didn't survive. After two days, the survivors who haven't been rescued so far are running out of time-- Not only do they have no food or water or in some cases air, the dead bodies floating in the water; the sewage; the fuel leaks; the lack of sanitation and the amount of stagnant ponds and lakes are building up to a serious health crisis down there.

There are 78,000 people in shelters with no place to go. They either can't reach their homes, or they no longer have their homes, and in many cases they don't know which yet. The only really good news coming out of that region is that the 30,000 refugees trapped in the damaged Superdome are being convoyed to the Astrodome in Houston -- With much better conditions and an extraordinarily generous offer from Texas to stay there 'as long as needed'. In other parts of the country, enormous volunteer efforts are underway to give aid to the people displaced by this horror. Please help these causes; even if you can't contribute, you can put it on your journal and blogs and get the word out.

I just saw The Day After Tomorrow, and I really liked it.

I've actually had it sitting stagnant in my DVD collection for months now; I bought it in a bundle with I, Robot, apparently out of some burning need to support the CG community. I figured it'd be good for a mindless diversion, and after picking it up I just never got around to watching it. But tonight Mom was out with a bunch of friends, Dad and I ordered pizza, and since nothing was on TV and I was too lazy/hungry to drive out to Blockbuster I said "What the hell, let's put this in."

And as it turned out, I like it. It's fairly mindless, yes, and its premise depends heavily on a willing suspension of disbelief from the viewer, but it had awesome effects, great action, and some really endearing characters (Ian Holm can do no wrong IMO). It's nothing brilliant, but it's good fun.

And contrary to popular opinion, I thought the wolves looked terrific. (Of course, you guys've already seen my attempt at modeling a canine -- Though you haven't seen my attempts to put fur on it, and I'm gonna keep it that way >.> )

We use this 3d program called Maya in our Form/Space/Lighting class. It's a great program, but for some reason the thing has completely f*cked up lately. It corrupts my save files. If fails to load the user-interface properly. It's stopped letting me freaking render. I've mailed the tech support guys in the building, and gotten nothing back. I've mailed my professor, and gotten nothing back. If this doesn't get fixed soon, I'm screwed.

Oh - During this weekend I've also gotta write a paper, prepare a 15-minute oral presentation I found out about last week, shoot the same rigorous fight-scene on green-screen and outside, as each combatant, then edit that film into a seamless battle with myself. On top of that, I've gotta re-do financial aid stuff that's not going through properly.

Plus my family's in trouble; last year Dad was in a car accident and a couple months ago the bitch he hit decided to sue us for it. We all know it's a bullshit case; no-one with "severe lifelong pain" would sit on it for a year before saying anything. They went to a mediation session today. She wants $100,000. Our family and Allstate have $13,500. Mom says she's not worried, but I am; just because the case is bullshit doesn't mean she won't win. If this lawsuit doesn't go well for us I'll probably have to withdraw from school and look for any possible work just to improve the chances that we can keep our house... And I'll probably get hell for it too, because Mom's insistent that she can take care of everything and handle tuition at the same time, but dammit, tuition keeps getting freakin' bigger and their paychecks could barely get me through in the beginning. More and more I feel like if I stay here all I'm gonna do is put them in the poor-house.

This sucks.

I'm outta DA, at least until next week. I'm not feeling too community-oriented right now.

And no sooner did I post this than a severe thunderstorm rolled in to mess up my filming schedule tomorrow, and my laptop stopped working properly!! It won't open anything or launch programs, or open explorer windows. If it's died then I'm screwed on my Italian Baroque papers and I've lost a few years of artwork...

So, I stand corrected, THIS sucks.

Yes, I have been darn busy as of late, so I'll begin by apologizing for not commenting on peoples' works like I should be...

Next order of business, my workload:

1) An exam Monday in 20th-century art, on a part of the book I haven't really read yet.
2) By Tuesday I need to have a good character model sheet for Animation I (this'll be easy)
3) Also by Tuesday, I need to have storyboarded out a four-page segment of a Simpsons episode. Inked, style-accurate, the works. I figure this'll be somewhere between 35 and 40 storyboards (especially since that's as many sheets as I was able to copy).
4) I still haven't started on my Shoujo Phonebook entry, and they start collecting in a week.... O.o
5) Misc. Other Projects. There are at least three I can think of offhand.

Now, for something mildly interesting: I've found that it's actually more socially acceptable to be a witch on this campus than it is to be an AvP fan.

I bought it as soon as it came out (...well.. Technically, before it came out), and after I finished up my Animation homework Wednesday night I headed home and indulged in watchin' it. Thursday, Professor Goto asked us what we all did the night before, and I told him, and his response: "You bought it?" Pretty much the rest'a the class shared his sentiment that the movie was a root canal, and then it occured to me: I have not met a single person in this college besides myself who enjoyed it! It took me six months to find a person on this campus who was even neutral to it! This is a school where everybody can find himself a niche, but I remain the Jewish kid on Christmas regarding this subject.

"You're a wicchan? Awesome!"

"Did you see those two guys kissing goodbye at the bus stop? That was so cute!"

"You liked AvP? ....You get hit in the head a lot, don'tcha?"

Don't get me wrong; I'm not blind to the faults of this film. I understand that there are aspects of the film that you wouldn't get unless you knew about the scenes they cut. I understand that certain parts are pretty contrived, and I understand the acting wasn't great. What I don't understand was how people expected Paul Anderson to outdo Ridley Scott and James Cameron on a budget smaller than Alien:Resurrection's.

Anyways, I've gotta go put my clothes in the dryer and do some homework.

If you all have been watching/reading the news lately, you'll have heard about the horrible devastation the tsunamis in Asia and other places have caused. There are over 50,000 people dead, and countless more left without homes and shelter. Fifty thousand! So many people who have lost everything... and I'm sitting here in a warm house with food and clothes.. A new computer can wait, this old clunker will make it a while longer. I donated as much as I could to Red Cross, and I'm joining the plea with [link] (click for the Canadian link) in asking that you donate to the Red Cross International Response Fund to help out with this tragedy. The minimum donation is $5, surely we can all pitch in at least that much from our Christmas money this year? I don't want to think about how many DA members...how many artists and writers and people aspiring to their dreams were lost this last week..just like that.. Please, if you can help at all, do what you can! If you can't donate, spread the word!

O-kay... On the PlanetAvP forums last night, around midnight I guess, somebody told me to cut my bullshit and quit pretending like I cared. According to her, we Americans don't really care about anyone except our troops, and that we should just cut the sanctimonious crap and screw the rest of the world. Come on, fellow Yanks, let's show these people what Americans should be known for -- helping those in need, even if we need to put aside our plans to do it.

Also, I had a thought earlier -- I've got an airbrush, paper, and Microns. If I do some kind of picture and put it up on a print account, then send 70% of my earnings to the ELCA's disaster relief fund, how many people would but it?

I've started work on the comic again; finished two pages since I came home. I'm gonna post Page 11 as soon as I finish this journal, cuz it really works nicely as an independent illustration. I'm trying not to think of those map textures I promised I'd make. Poor Winde; I've been keeping him waiting for so long....

Slowing my progress: Half-Life 2. Maaaan, that game is AWESOME. It barely works on my computer; my laptop's the exact bare minimum specs listed. For it to even maybe run semi-playably I need to turn off all other apps, including my virus scanner. It's worth it, though
