Sonic Retro is down, I thought it was just some server issues until I checked Sonic Cult and that was down too. Those are really the only two development sites for Sonic games, so I'm guessing it was either ddos'd by a disgruntled member of the scene, or 4chan has done it again.

I'm stuck in a rut with the Yamato, the pictures aren't offering as much detail as I hoped, I should have bought a scale model first. I'm using ZBrush atm.

And Happy New Year to you all, earlier I received a copy Mirror's Edge, one of the finest and most underrated games I've ever played. The world would be a much less depressing place if for every Xbox fanboy buying GoW, there were two people purchasing this game. I recommend you grab if you can.

In other news, thanks to the Lame Duck Challenge, I was able to get Crossover for free. If you don't know what that is, it's a piece of software that allows you to run Windows programs natively on an intel mac machine, just as well (if not, better) as they would run by restarting into shitty BootCamp. I've tried it out, and not only do all of my windows games run flawlessly, but after a little tweaking and debugging, I got ZBrush 3 working! This means that I now have an efficient work environment, and the time it takes to go back and forth between ZBrush and my other programs has decreased from 10 minutes to less than 30 seconds.

While I still don't have much time to do anything, this makes using ZBrush a lot more appealing, and something I might be more inclined to do in my free time.

In other news, Sega's doing some sort of 3D Sonic thing, I really don't need to point out the fail in this because those two words should make it apparent. It's getting harder and harder to argue that the majority of their games are fairly decent seeing how they continue supplementing the memory of the old stuff with this new incoherent wtf crap.

It's not that I don't want to be here, it's just the fact that I'm halfway through what is probably the most important semester of my life, and the workload is getting more intense. In addition to classes, I have music, Model UN delegation, an environmental research project, and college applications. It's just too much, and I need to jettison a few things temporarily to get through this. These few weeks could make or break everything, to sum it up.

So don't expect a whole lot from me for now. Sorry guys, I plan to do a lot to make up for this when I'm finished with all this, but at the present moment my hands are tied.

I just wanted to thank all of my existing watchers, I know you guys are the ones who are really supporting me, not the ones that are inevitably to come as a result of the fan art fiasco.

I saved up enough money to get ZBrush, and I've also figured out how to model human anatomy, so I think that once I really figure out how to use it you'll be seeing the quality of my work improve dramatically.

Programming is frustrating, I'm ordering a book on how to get 3D models in Java, so I can start integrating the two. I'm trying to assemble a team of classmates to help me design the sequel to our last game (a stupid Space Invaders clone), but it seems we're all too busy. Maybe after I've squared away all these college apps I'll start taking it more seriously.

I've got 73 things in my gallery, and 3,170 pageviews. Most important though, is that I'm not a complete and total failure at art anymore. I have a tenuous grasp on 2D drawing, as well as a basic command of 3D rendering. For someone who never even bothered with art or Maya before September of last year, I guess it's really not that bad, I've got plenty of years ahead. I just wish I'd started earlier.

The Wing Fortress is going well, once that's done I plan to step up my game in a big way. Also, the Paper Sonic game cover will go up very soon, if I lost the contest you'll get to see the regular version, and if I win, the submitted version.

I plan to remain active here at least another year. Even then, I don't think I'm going anywhere until I get employed, and I'll hold on after than if I can. I just want to thank you all for stopping by, and encouraging me to continue to do the thing that brings me satisfaction.

They are: P-38 Lighting, Graf Zeppelin, an ESA astronaut, fantasy space station (I call it the ISS III), fantasy airborne carrier (unnamed as of now, come up with something for me and I'll give you a cookie). I bought a scale model of my favorite main battle tank, and the best in the world, the British Army's Challenger II, and I hope to model that when I get done with this other stuff.

I went to the Dark Knight. I had been told so many things I didn't know what to expect. People were telling me things such as "Heath Ledger's performance made a chill run down my spine!" or "I'm rewatching it for the third time!" or even "Best movie ever!"

So I went in not sure what I'd see. Was it good? Absolutely. Does it deserve the number one spot on IMDB? Absolutely not. While I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and while it could be one of the best comic adaptations I've seen, it certainly was not the most overwhelming movie I've ever seen, and truthfully, things fell apart a little bit at the end. It would have been done more justice if they had split the movie in two instead of trying to cram it all into 3 hours. That said, despite the irritating Ledger fanservice, he couldn't have ended his movie career on a better note. Unless he was Daniel Day-Lewis (just kidding).

So I'm back in Providence now, and in two weeks I'll be in California for another week pursuing colleges. That means no scanner at my disposal until August 15th. A shame too, because I've finally regained all feeling in my finger after the physical therapy.

Although I'll never be able to properly give people the middle finger with my right hand for the rest of my life, I can actually draw better than ever before, and I can always flip off with my left.

So from now on I will provide expert advice on sensitive issues in the Sonic fandom, such as the colour of Cream's undergarments and whether or not Silver should have his own game. These will be based on actual posts I have made that have spawned actual flame wars. I will do five words of wisdom a day if people express the most remote form of interest.


1. On whether Rouge will appear in Sonic and the Black Knight:
For the past few games, Sega has usually attempted to attract a certain audience when they introduce new characters. Like Shadow with lone wolves, emos, and the hip hop crowd, Rouge was designed in an attempt to introduce a new market: sex appeal.

Unfortunately, the Middle Ages offer little/no sex appeal, only the bubonic plague (if you're into that sort of thing). Unless they can find a way to make Religious wars sexually appealing, it looks like it's gonna be a no-go for Rouge.


2. On what unlockables should be in Sonic Unleashed:
Like the Nintendo history ROMs in Brawl, there should be some of the old Sonic games.

But in the spirit of 50 percent "werehog" (aka half-assed), instead of an Act 2 for each of these games, you receive a Red Ring of Death and your XBox 360 crashes.


3. On what Big the Cat's wolf form would look like in Sonic Unleashed:
I'm pretty sure I would insert the disk into my Sega Saturn, and create the most concentrated piece of Sega fail in the history of man.


4. On voice acting:

I also saw Ringo Starr with Billy Squier in concert a couple days ago, it was really cool, now I've seen both living Beatles.

You may or may not remember, but back in December I set a few personal goals for myself, here's the status on those particular things:

Learn 3D art: YES. I have successfully explored most aspects of 3D, there's not much left to learn, only practice.

Learn 2D art: YES. I haven't done any 2D art in quite a while (might upload something while I'm here at RISD though), but the latest ones I did were pretty faithful to the style I was going for. Again, practice.

Learn to Snowboard: YES.

Learn to Program: YES. I successfully wrote Space Invaders well before the school year was out, by the end I was writing a useful email client.

Re-discover the Guitar: YES. Just need to keep practicing.

Pick up a 3rd Language: NOT YET. As I had stated originally, this won't start happening until college. Maybe in March when I go to China.

As you can clearly see, nearly all of these things are now in my grasp.

I also talked about saving up a Wii and an iPhone. I'm pleased to tell you that I now have both. So I'm pretty content right now, everything's falling into place nicely, just gotta keep going.

Searching for colleges means I'll be on the road again, the day after tomorrow I'll be driving down through NYC and Philadelphia to check out Gettysburg, I can't really afford a plane ticket right now so it could take several days. Two weeks from now I'll be staying in Rhode Island for a month, and then immediately after that I'll be flying out to California for more college crap. Hopefully I'll be done with traveling for a while, at least until China next March.

I've noticed a lot of drama on other people's journals lately. I'm on 4chan now and then, there's a lot of similarities, except over their they act a little more over the top and satirical. I mean there's nothing wrong with being excited, mellow can be pretty boring, but some people act up over the stupidest things...

I've been working on a couple of models, I expect to have at least one of them done by the end of the month.

Interesting things that have happened since the last post:

Went to upstate New York, hit Canada for a little bit. Looking for colleges, nothing inside of MA (except MIT, but my chances of getting in aren't good at the moment, I'll save it for after college).

Apparently Hillary Clinton dropped out. Unsurprisingly, as if it hadn't been completely pre-meditated, almost every major news outlet as well as the GOP have turned their attention towards unleashing their largely unfounded fury on Obama. I really don't see this as anything more than an attempt to make the vote as close as possible so they can just tip (or rig) it in favor of the Republicans without anyone really calling them out on it, just like in the last two elections. I mean come on, how can you even deny it at this point?

Personally, I despise the candidates, there's a significant degree of corruption on both sides. However, seeing that Obama hasn't really been caught contradicting himself (a.k.a. lying outright) as often as McCain has, I see him as the lesser of two evils. It appears the extent of McCain's repeated dishonesty another thing he could receive a medal for, or claim that he's experienced at. Despite the fact that I hate politics, I only mention this because it is outweighed by my hatred (and fear of) stupidity and irrationality.

And this is why I'll never do a semester abroad in Washington D.C.

The Art Program ended yesterday, which sucks because I've got 3 models that need textures. I'll finish at least one of them during the next week of finals. Unless I'm extremely bored, do not expect to see too much from me in June.

Concerning those art programs I briefly mentioned about a month ago, well, I was accepted into the RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) summer program, the best in the world! I'll be there for all of July, so depending on what I do there, a lot of work could be popping up on this page.

School ends a week from Friday, and my parents will be driving down to pick me up. I finally get to go home.

The first 1000 views were for Sonic artwork, and the next 1000 were all when I was doing modeling. I guess I'll mark the occasion by combining the two.

I've got one month left in this art program before school ends. A shame, really, because I seriously doubt my ability to do anything over the summer. I did apply to some tech and game design programs, as well as summer school for a jump start on Calculus, so maybe during that time I'll do something.

As for art, aside from distracting friends (that's what they are for I guess), things are going really, really well. I've picked up most of the concepts of 3D right now, and even managed too make it look more like painting than polygon. My current project is a battleship, but my ultimate goal is to start doing some 3D Sonic fan art, I'm at least a couple of months away from that though.

I took a huge standardized test today, and didn't come home until about 45 minutes ago, the first time since mid-March, so there's my birthday in a nutshell.

You thought this entry was going to be about sex, didn't you? Well, you know what they say about toasters...

I did some quick reading on this new game I keep hearing about, Sonic Unleashed, so far it looks like all they need to do in order to make it an excellent game is to FINISH IT.

I crave Brawl, I haven't played it since a couple of days after it came out, I will be playing that. Also I go back to school, and if I do have that art class, I'll even be able to submit something to this damn page, something which I've neglected to do for over 3 weeks.

I was traveling all day unfortunately so I missed Easter, but it doesn't really matter, Christianity is a lie anyway.

After a botched attempt to surgically remove a cancerous spot on my right middle finger a year and a half ago, it healed and came back. Deciding not to take any chances this time, today the dermatologists cut out almost everything around it, tissue, nerves, blood vessels, and a little bit of muscle. In other words, that finger will be totally useless for a month at least, I can't move it or feel anything above the stitches, and right now it's nearly impossible to type with that hand.

Aside from that, there are two other things that will distract me sufficiently, I'll be getting Brawl, and if I'm able to play it I definitely will. Also, a trip to Costa Rica for two weeks.

The good news is, once again being able to participate in a sport for next term, I'll be doing an art class instead, which I'll basically use to make more 3d stuff.

Unfortunately my peers seem to abandon those thoughts in a desperate bid to gain satisfaction out of being part of the mindless Giants hysteria in southwestern New England. I haven't called my parents since the game because they need time to cool down.

I tried to do something today, but I couldn't. Assuming that it's a relatively quiet Wednesday, I'm going to go outside (gasp), and try to find some inspiration. I'm trying to apply for a 3D animation and game design program this summer, not to mention all the computer art classes I plan to load up on for college, wherever I go, 2 years from now.

Guitar coming in 10 days (Car too! I hope...), but I wont be able to buy Brawl because I'll be in Costa Rica during it's release, I could be screwed. On the bright side, this will definitely help my Spanish grade which is ruining my GPA.

Nothing else to report. I saw a girl play a video game yesterday.

Still not allowed to snowboard, though I'm actually performing better on my impact tests than before the concussion, the verbal section I keep mysteriously failing, no matter how hard I try. Though I dislike snowboarding, all this time doing nothing is driving me insane, they won't even let me work out in the gym, so I'm left doing pushups and sit-ups in my room instead.

Though I've been largely turned off from video gaming in general since my CounterStrike binge last summer, and despite it's obvious flaws, Brawl might restore my faith in humanity.

EITHER WAY, WHERE THE HELL IS MY GUITAR?

I know where it is! It's on back-order until the Ides of February, that's where!

The boredom is causing me to lose my sanity (or is it the concussion idk who cares)!

The concussions largely subsided, I'm still not snowboarding though. My dad came over to pull me out of school for a little while on Saturday night for dinner, which had me throwing up later in the middle of the night.

Whatever, enough about that stuff I've just got to be a little more careful I guess. I tried doing some painting on my tablet, but I don't really know where to go with it, so that's suspended for the time being. It probably means I need to take a break. I'm going to try and come up with something, if I can't by tomorrow I guess that's my third strike, I'll take a week if that's the case.

I'm finished snowboarding for quite a while, though I can't believe I'm still standing. I was going way too fast as usual, so I got a concussion yesterday when I tried to do a flip, except I was only able to do half of it and managed to land it upside down. My helmet probably saved my life, but my head and neck are killing me and I also twisted my foot.

Miraculously, my iPod that I was wearing is intact, but my snowboard's completely trashed, there's deep cuts all over it and one of the bindings is broken while the other has been completely torn off.

In other words, DAMMIT!!!!!!

That board cost me 400 dollars!!!!

Well on the up side I'm going to have some more free time, which will give me more time do stuff here I hope.

Life has been good, I got in a nasty accident snowboarding the other day, I've started to do tricks and such, I was racing my friends when I crossed a jump with a random skiier, and with both of us going at extremely high speed, collided in midair. The resulting collision has made my left arm and leg extremely bruised and weak for now. My cell phone, which was in my chest pocket, escaped damage, but unfortunately the ribs it pressed into didn't and I had amazing difficulty sleeping because I've had to sleep on my back and the breathing is hard. The skiier ended up with a bloody nose and possibly a broken finger. Fortunately for the two of us, it was nothing that could potentially end our seasons, and we were both able to make it down the rest of the mountain on our own steam. I have taken a few days off to recover, but I'll be back the day after tomorrow I hope.
Grades improving too, which is good because they're making me do all this college crap! ( ) So far the places I've looked at are California, Washington, Canada, Vermont, and even Scotland (mom's idea).

With all this stuff going on, art has slid down the priorities list a little bit.

Not to worry though! I've already signed my life away to the school art department for the entire spring term, my advisor is the head of it anyway, and he's proved to be increasingly useful, especially in the way of computer imagery. Just don't be too surprised if there's a decrease between now and April, it doesn't mean that I'm dead.

Though I wouldn't have cared if I knew I was going to get nothing (my 16th birthday flew by completely unnoticed while I was at school), it is kind of upsetting to tell your parents when they asked that you wanted a Wii, picking it out in the store yourself, only for it to go to your brother on Christmas Day. I did in fact get nothing, while my brother also got a drum set and a few other things.

But it's ok, I've saved up enough money to buy myself a Gibson Firebird, so it'll be here in a few days! It would have been much easier if I hadn't spent money getting my parents gifts, so I paid myself back by ordering a Wii for my room at school!

After all, what are parent's credit cards for?

But I am excited because the rest of the family is going to Florida and they didn't buy me a ticket (is it normal to completely forget about one of your sons just because he went off to boarding school?), but my cousins are flying in from London to Vermont and I'll be hanging with them and snowboarding too (I haven't seen them face to face in 3 years, but they certainly haven't forgotten about me).

I borrowed Sonic Adventure from a friend today, because it's been about 7 years since the last time I played. I ran it expecting to be disappointed by Sonic Team halfassedness and severely outdated graphics, but was pleasantly surprised to find that it's just as good as I remember it. In fact not only was the gameplay fun for once, but the graphics are comparable to Shadow the Hedgehog, a game that came out only two years ago.

Most casual gamers will tell you that Sonic went bad because Sega struggled with the third dimension of gaming. Naturally many Sonic fans will disagree with that statement, I won't. While Sonic Adventure was a great game (and honestly, the last successful mainstream Sonic title), it was not the Excellent game that Nintendo/Mario, and even Microsoft/Halo fans have been rewarded with several times in the last decade, and it's CERTAINLY not good enough to be used as the foundation for every subsequent Sonic game up until now.

And truthfully, the fact that Sega fell apart doesn't make too much of a difference. Had Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog been released for the Dreamcast, they still would have sucked. Sonic '06 is still an extremely buggy (and slightly lamer) version of Sonic Adventure, with nicer graphics. In fact, I think there was more innovation in the two years between Sonic 2 and 3 than in the eight years between SA and the most recent game, because there simply hasn't been any.

Why do they think that SA is the Gold Standard? Why can't they just go back to the drawing board and move on?

EDIT: Just discovered this, as an owner of a PS3, I find it sad and funny at the same time that it still hasn't outsold the Sega CD yet. (6 million to 5.5 million)

I've been on dA for 3 months now, and all I've got to show for it is 600 page views. Am I doing something wrong? Not fav'ing enough art? Not commenting enough on other peoples sites? Not enough re-coloring? Not enough leaving/surprise returns? Maybe if I keep learning this art stuff, quality of work will trump all of that.

Oh well, I think that I'm doing this more for me than for you, dear reader. All this toil just to leave it on my hard drive and never see the light of day? No thanks.

So I downloaded a demo of Sega Rally Revo off the Playstation Network, and it's pretty fun. Though I vowed I would never again blow 60 bucks on a PS3 game, it's good and it's Sega, so it's a buy (nothing will ever convince me to touch Sonic '06 though, sorry!).

On the subject of Sonic, in my interweb travels through the ailing cult of Sonic (it always seems that way, despite the fact that it's probably growing, definitely an accurate reflection of the state of Sonic Team), I've noticed a significant amount of Silver fans. WTF? To anyone older than 11, Silver has no like-able characteristics, he's Sonic minus the speed and personality, a shell of a character. Though I understand why people might like Shadow (though I dislike him and his 'zomg dark past' just as much), what's there to like about Silver? I know the plot of Sonic '06 has something to do with ret-conning his entire existence, I just hope Sega doesn't bring him back, they'd be insane to do it anyway especially now that they're trying to pretend that '06 didn't happen.

In other news, Sonic for the iPod is a big wtf. Ironically, the only thing that lags is the music. Then again, I'm impressed that they got it running on the iPod at all, I hope that if they end up making a version for the iPhone it runs smoothly.
