Hi everyone,

So in the interim of me finding a job, I decided to make a Facebook group called The Artists' Salon with the intention for artists of all mediums to come together and talk about the Arts, as well as to promote your own work.

That means visual, communicative, comics, film, dance, music, and theater are always on the table. So feel free to join and post your work. It just opened up a few hours ago, and I'm hoping to create a postive, growing atmosphere for artists!

Again, the facebook group is called The Artists' Salon.

~C

Working forty hours a week as a graphic designer while trying to also be an illustrator, is exhausting. I'm finding that I have no time to work on the things I love, and all the time in the world to work on things I hate

How do you manage your time, fellow artists? Do you bring your work with you where ever you go? Force yourself to make time? Work through the exhaustion? Hook yourself up to a caffeine I.V.? Make a to-do list? Or accept that you may not have the time to work on everything you want, and instead, should work on what needs to be done?

All the above is leading to a sort of creative-artistic block where I shudder when I see a blank page and I can't get what's in my head down on the page.

Oh the woes of a cartoonist!

~C

So I have a job as a designer of wedding photo albums! It's exciting because every day I get to see two photo sets of two separate weddings and maliciously tear them apart in my head. It's really fun. In a really evil sort of way... occasionally I see nice wedding's but their never the ones that are expensive looking. There always the ones where you can tell the couple are in love with one another, and that's all that matters.

That aside, I've been working on BoMB. I have 14 pages written (all trash), but at least it's something. I hung out with a friend last night at a bar and then we got some food. I found it exceptionally stimulating on an intellectual and creative level, so I rushed home and tried to capture that energy on paper. We'll see if the Muses were at all by my side when I get home today after work and re-read what I wrote.

This weekend is going to be BoMB central with a flood of character designers and posters. I'll upload all of them when I get a chance, but right now I need to draw Ege, Sabin, and Dinn. And maybe eve Bellerophon, but I'm not sure.

For those of you who don't know what the fuck BoMB is, it stands for "Ballad of Mushroom Boy" and details the adventures of Sabin, who is an adoptive prince, and Ege, who is a washed-up-on-shore thief as they go through a desolate land known as Laccaria discovering who they are, the history of the land, and why there are deep scars in the Earth. It's a story about the power of words and coming to terms with who you are. It also has wicked humor and lots of half-naked guys.

I'm looking forward to completing this story. I've been writing the world of it for the past two or three years without ever knowing what I was going to call it.

I'm also sketching out some postcard designs centered around Greek Mythology, specifically Edith Hamilton's "Mythology". I really want to have each of the heroes have their own unique image, and maybe do a set of five for the Trojan War. I'm not sure yet, since it's all in the works right now. Lastly, I'm working on even more images for Shakespeare plays.

So I have a lot on my plate, but BoMB is first and foremost!

~C

So.. yeah.

I've condensed Ege the Seven Stories into one giant story that will be the rebirth of "Ballad of Mushroom Boy", I have "Zed" and I have "Podunk." Aside from my big three stories, I have a comic story collection of ten comics in which Zed's orgins, The Witch Oiseau, and so forth will be in. (the first four stories of the comic collection will be available online, but to get the whole book you'll have to buy it.)

That's pretty much it.
o.O

I've realized that I have an obsession with mermaids and that I've always kind of had one. I really like drawing them because you can be so creative with them in terms of color and design. Anyhoo, I've been researching mermaids for a little bit and only recently have I decided to really dive into it and look at mermaids as Sirens and other nymph figures of Greek myth. It's really fun to explore all of the different nymphs and entertain the idea that they do exist, which really makes working on Gamboge that much more fun since I've pretty much decided to treat it like a Nymph Encyclopedia.

That said, let's talk about Baskets and the Ballad of Mushroom Boy. I really like stripping with comics, not actually creating the traditional comic book page, per se, but using comic strips as a serious story telling medium. I know thousands of other people have done it, but the concept is fairly new to me. Currently, I just as a 14"x14" image area not the standard 11"x17" image area. I enjoy the larger surface and the creative freedom is warrants me. So, with that in mind, I'm adjusting Baskets as well as The Ballad of Mushroom Boy to a Graphic Novel told in strips. The first part, Baskets, is pretty dramatic (evidently.) I didn't intend for it to be so... serious, but, well, I only did what the characters wanted me to do, really. The new Baskets will come out in mid-April. It won't be complete, but it will be half way through the story. I've actually only finished penciling the first strip the other day, but it should be quick moving once I've past the first hurdle that is the first strip.

Also, I've been asked to apply for something called "Fellowship" with is an organization that teaches artists how to teach a youth group and prepare communal art projects. Which I think is pretty awesome. If I make it, and join up with them, that can lead to fulfilling one of my dreams and actually educating kids on art and helping them creative something fun and productive. I'll keep this journal active with more information on that. How awesome would it be if you were walking down the street in a certain neighborhood and saw the story of that neighborhood told sequentially with giant comic panels?!

o.O

So I think I've finally cracked my whole not adding eyes onto my diva's problem! I'm so happy. I was afraid in adding eyes, they would distract people from the overall pose, etc. but it turns out, making the eyes wicked small, I got over that hurdle. You can see them in my scraps:

[link]

Now that I've gotten this far, I think I'll try a small little comic (when I have the time.) I'm currently doing a mass-over haul of White Trash Revolution, so I'm thinking of starting this new jaunt of art with that.

o.O

I want to illustrate Les Miserables, by Victor Hugo, but not in a normal form, meaning, not in a way that is coherent to the story. In the musical, Marius has a song after the revolution called "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" which is a requiem to his dead friends. They spoke of revolution, but never held a gun, and died with conviction in their hearts.

Before the second attack on the barricade, there is also a lyric in the song, "Drink With Me:"

"At the shrine of Friendship
Never say die.
Let the wine of Friendship,
Never run dry."

When I listen to the first song mentioned and then listen to the second song, I get a strange sensation that Marius, while singer after they are all dead and gone, heres phantom voices of Enjolras, Couferyac, and Bahorel responding to his anguish with words of Friendship.

So that's the sort of illustrations I want to try and create for Les Miserables. A series of vignettes featuring the major portions of Les Miserables and telling the story of the Novel as well as the story I perceive from the musical.
