I have been thinking about going into the bird-y line of scientisting. I base this decision on the fact that when ever something flaps past, or hops or cocks a lazer eye at some small creeping thing upon the ground, my head twitches around to watch it and a small part inside of me makes the same sound as a cat sitting on a sunny windowsill, when it tries singing the sparrows closer. That and birds are reptiles. So I like birds. A lot.

And just when I think I like birds more than anything else around and that I could be thinking birdy thoughts, not that I need to figure what I want to do with myself that is not overtly strange and society could still accept me for, not just yet. I go and think about squid.

I like squid also. I spent the last 2 hours looking at Youtube clips of squid. It started off as horny-toads and finished with squid. It always ends with squid. When I think about birds, sometimes it ends with squid.

If only the two could be as one...
[link]
[link]

clubs :::::::::>

I guess they could be called dogs, they trot along on the end of leaches pretty well and wear that dog expression on their faces, you know the one that looks as if they have been banged over the head with a rubber mallet.
I went and saw District 9 the other day, if you have not already seen it I would suggest that you do, as this is something of an understatement, it was really rather good. I went about for the rest of the day talking about crustaceans in an South African accent and pretending to be a bureaucrat.
My only complaint is that the aliens were not alien enough.

I then had the misfortune to see Transformers 2. I know that complaints out this film are old hat but all I can ask is, why does Michael Bay hate movie goers? And when did he start hating Optimus Prime?

Te main problem I have with bad movies isn't so much that they insult my intelligence, or made me bored. I don't have too much of an issue with them wasting my time (as I would have gone off and wasted my time some place else) or with the theatres mugging me for the cost of the ticket and popcorn and drinks and an ice cream cone. It worries me most that while I was watching the sad monstrosity in front of me in surround sound, that so many children have died between the time the lights went out and then came back on. And that the money wasted on producing a flop could have been used to stop them from karking.

Well on that depressing note I leave you...

Club:::::::>

She found it very fresh on the side of the road (hit by a car or something) and now I get the pleasure of chopping it up and doing other fun things to it. Like preparing the skull and having a complete set of tail coverts. Maybe doing something with the feet. I'm also tossing up the idea of doing the whole skeleton. Unfortunately I cannot attack it until the weekend, and the fridge/ freezer is too small to fit it (not that the flatmates would appreciate seeing it in there, even though the bird is in fact quite ready to eat and they like chicken... Meal fit for a king, I said. Full of flavour...) but the garage is nice and cool so he should keep.
In fact I don't think the flatmates like the peacock much at all, they both seemed rather loath to come near it when I showed it to them.
I have been at uni for a couple of weeks now and so I have learnt many things...

Such as the lecture theatre that I go to first thing in the morning has seats that fold down. The all make a cheeky noise. When a hundred and fifty or so people sit down at once it sounds as if you are in the middle of a marine meat ball being munched by a large pod of dolphins.

What look like dried out old botanists are in fact amateur stand up comics. And plants are actually interesting, something I wasn't so keen on before.

Labs are not as scary as you think but you need to bone up on the facts before going. I was so nervous for my first one that I couldn't draw a straight line with a ruler. My drawings were very squiggly. Thankfully a nice Honours student spoke to me like you would talk to a panicking racehorse. He may have offered me carrots at one point.

The birds in the park will recognise you very quickly. They will eat out of your hand. In the case of pigeons they will sit on your hand, shoulder and knees. You will give them names like "Jemima", "Slick" and "Spectacle George". They all have the cool calculating eyes of psychopaths. They know when you are hiding your muesli bar and think it is rather rude that you don't share.
I think I spend too much time in the park...

Also physics. Physics is... well when I say hard I mean that when I read the text book of listen to the lecturer all the sentences they say are in fact complete ones that are grammatically correct but in actual fact make no sense in a listening cogitating kind of way. When they go on to equations it is quite literally a visual white noise. I FAIL at physics in a massively large way. I am surprised that I can walk about, catch balls, look at running streams or trains, I am that bad at physics.

That's about it for now. I haven't been around really lately.

<----- Club (but not the religious kind that bails you up into a corner trying to force hot chocolate and dogma onto you...)

And sorry to bore everyone with a bunch of photos.

In other news what is green and turns red at the touch of a button?
A frog in a blender.
Now you may ask what is with the cheesy and slightly disturbing joke? Well from experiments I have deduced that frogs have an affinity with sharp spinning blades. They seem attracted to them funnily enough. I have been mowing a very large jungle, which I was told was once lawn and the number of frogs that emerge from the undergrowth intent on acquainting themselves with the roaring blades of a petrol lawnmower is unbelievable. Every so often I hear a thud into the back of the catcher, luckily it never turns out to be a mangled corpse. Thank goodness. I have become so paranoid about mincing up a frog that now every time I see something green and/or frog shaped I have to double check its not a frog. Which slows things up since I am surrounded by plants that have surprisingly frog shaped leaves. I am slowed up even more since every time a frog actually turns out not to be a leaf I have to pick it up an coo at it, tell it that it's beautiful and then find a safe place to put it. Difficult indeed.

Commissions open...

Club --->

Or rather the complete and utter lack of it.

The scenario goes like this; I am watching the telly on a fine but cool evening with my family, when I see something that makes my blood boil!

ANIMAL CRUELTY ON TELEVISION FOR ENTERTAINMENT!
I feel that this subject warrants every last of those capital letters!

A man, for the want of a better word, butchered a live octopus and made a sandwich out of its tentacle and proceeded to take a bite. At the same time the octopus could be seen in the same shot next to the man-thing struggling to escape without any tentacles. It was stark white and very weak.
In the background other people were laughing and egging him on.

And this is ok? The show passed through to be broadcast just after the 6 0'clock news and has a G rating. It is shameful and disgusting. I am so very, very angry right now.

This circus is called Million Dollar Catch, its about a few ships owned by a few families who fish for crayfish or the rock lobster. It is supposed to showcase the manly prowess of these brave men and their battle with the sea. The programme was made to say thank you to the community of Bluff for their help and support after the director of the show broke his neck during a fishing trip.

Instead the show is a mockery. The commentary is over-hyped, the voice over and bad music making what is something simple and relatively danger free activities seem like life and death. The characters, instead of being salt of the earth, good keen blokes are immature, macho idiots who ham it up for the camera.

And then they pull a stunt like this.

To be fair, the only one of the crews seems to enjoy brutalising highly intelligent animals. Another crew was shown just previously in the same episode releasing both a shark and a conger eel that had been accidentally caught. Which is just the sort of thing we want to see.

I don't like people at the moment...

Commissions open...
For ink work:
All prices are $US and include packaging and shipping.
A5- (127 x 178/ 5"x7") $35
A4- (229mm x 305mm/ 9"x12") $60
A3- (305mm x 406mm/ 12"x16") $100

Club --->

While trawling the internet, doing some research for a Creature of the Week [link] on ConceptArt.org [link] came across something rather interesting.

Now I had heard of mind controlling parasites before and I have to admit they are damn cool! Now these parasites come in many forms, from bacteria to worms and flukes. One notable species of fluke that requires birds to finish off it's life-cycle, infests a snail. The snail eventually has it's little mind taken over and so climbs out into the open, like onto a leaf. The flukes which have moved into the eye stalks flash and pulsate making the snail obvious to any hungry birds. The fluke finishes up in a bird's gut, just where it wants to be. Other insect species have the same kind of thing, one parasite picks on ants. Another, the Gordian worm named after the Gordian knot, makes infected crickets commit suicide by drowning. Check this guy in action here:[link] it even comes with an article, but no-one ever really reads those! What is also interesting about these creatures is that no one is quite sure how the nervous system is actually controlled, that it is often chemical is the only thing that is confirmed.

Now I'm heading away from what I really wanted to talk about. That being mind-controlling parasites in humans. And we can blame cats.

Toxoplasmosis [link] is caused by the protozoa Toxoplasma gondii. It uses rats as a way of getting into a cat's digestive system. The rats or mice are instead of being repulsed with fear upon smelling cat's pee, are in fact attracted to it. Making the rodent more likely to cross paths with a cat and get eaten. After the unfortunate rat is passed, the protozoan goes on to infect others. This might not seem so bad, a good method of pest control in fact. But this protozoan is not fussy with which mammalian brain they play little games with. It has been found in many domesticated animals and PEOPLE. Infection seems to be from between 4-80% of the population, depending on where you are from. One of its possible side affects in humans is to make them more likely to have a car accident. It also seems to make people nicer and has been implicated in one of the causes of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. This brings to mind crazy old cat ladies, especially since the disease is more common in women. I'm probably glossing over everything far too much and may be jumping to conclusions but it's a damn interesting concept. After all the joke has been going around for a long time that cats are actually in control of the human race, it just seems like they have managed to actually do it.

As I am writing this my very own feline is sitting next to me, smiling at me with her eyes. I'm starting to think I have the bug myself!

Commissions open...
For ink work:
All prices are $US and include packaging and shipping.
A5- (127 x 178/ 5"x7") $35
A4- (229mm x 305mm/ 9"x12") $60
A3- (305mm x 406mm/ 12"x16") $100

Club --->

...'Cos that is soo what's important, right!

I have done this one before but tagged me, so here goes...

These are the "Rules" which I am supposed to post, supposedly:
1. Post these rules, of course, so presumably others, can follow along at home.
2. Each tagged person must, (and this cannot be stressed enough, in fact...) MUST, post 8 (eight) things about themselves on (I feel I must correct this, I believe 'in' would be more appropiate) their journal.
3. At the end, you have to choose and tag 8 (eight) people and post their icons on the same journal. Optional.
4. Go to their pages and send a message saying you tagged them.
5. No tag-backs! Or Take-Backsies!

8 Things about Myself

1. I am currently at war with my local council...
These "judicious" bastards (please forgive my coarseness...) have decided to build a sewerage treatment plant with large oxidation ponds to service the township I currently live in. They decided to put these ponds in my backyard. None of the local residents liked the proposal, but council had already decided where to put these ponds, before they even opened up for public submissions on the project. When public meetings where held and attended, the Councilors ignored all of our reservations and questions about the project. They also treated us all in a very condescending manner. After all we are just simple country folk.
My concern is that the river that runs through our land and into the sea is going to get filled with run-off from these ponds. Human sewerage. This river contains very rare fish called the Short-jaw Kokopu. It is rarer than some species of Kiwi. According to what I have read, it is not supposed to live in this river, as the river is not covered over with dense forest canopy and runs instead through farmland. It is not even recorded in my area. I have even contacted the Department of Conservation about this. Who can stop projects like this in a flash when they want to.
But try telling the council that.

2. I sometimes paint houses for a living.
But I have also built houses and decorated them too. This is not something that I want to be really doing. I really want to be working in the film industry. I have trained in Art Department, which covers everything from costume, props, sets through to make-up and special effects. I love props and SPFX make-up. I am especially proud of my fake blood, at which I take great pains at getting just the right colour and consistency.

3. I collect bits of critter.
At the moment sitting in the freezer I have the feet of a Harrier Hawk and a whole House Sparrow. I don't know what to do with the sparrow yet, but the feet I intend to mount.
I also have many feathers, a couple of eggs, a lizard skin, a brush-tailed possum skull, the jaw bones of a couple of fish and pride of place goes to a mummified rat.

4. I see things out of the corner of my eye.
But when I look closely nothing is there. I think they do it on purpose and I'll catch them one day.
Either that or I need special pills.

5. I watch an awful lot of Youtube.
Far too much, and so many cats!

6. I think I have more friends I talk to via electronic means than I do face to face.
It's no different to pen-pals. Some old friends simply live too far away to meet over coffee anymore.

7. I have jumped out of a plane.
And I didn't need to be pushed. I would recommend it to everyone. I have since followed that up with facing down a charging bull and a 'skyjump', which is an assisted fall from a very tall building. Bungy-jumping is next on the list.

8. I cannot resist melons.
I love those sweet, spherical bastards. The order of preference goes Honeydew, Rock (or Cantaloupe/musk) and then Water. But any of them will do. When I lived off porridge oats during my student-y years (heck I could still have many more) I used to save up and buy one every so often and have a melon "feast". I am drooling just thinking about it now.

FIN

Commissions still open.
For ink work:
All prices are $US and include packaging and shipping.
A5- (127 x 178/ 5"x7") $35
A4- (229mm x 305mm/ 9"x12") $60
A3- (305mm x 406mm/ 12"x16") $100

Club

Not particularly well today, so...

1. What does your deviant art name mean and why?
Commander Salamander comes from a anthropomorphic comic book hero I invented years ago. I used to do little comics of his adventures when I was in the early years of high school. He had a sidekick who happened to be a dragonfly. The dragonfly went away , but good old Sal' never did. I'm still working on it in a way, developing characters and such...

2. What fandom were you obsessed with when you joined and what are you into now?
I try not to.
Dinosaurs and my beasties really. I have the hope that one day I might actually create some art that has a deeper meaning, rather than 'oh, thats a...'

3. Do you comment, fav, or both?
I try both. But I often end up faving more.

6. Do you participate in clubs' contests here on DA?
I want to. But no time. I want to more when I have an art block as a way of pushing through it.

7. What is your most popular deviation?
My Ammut, has the most views and comments.

8. What are you favourite non-anime TV shows?
Many and many. I've been watching the I.T crowd lately, it's really good. You laugh so hard and so long you miss the next joke.

9. What are the things you wish you could draw?
People are so hard. Mechanical things. Everything, sometimes. I can't get my head around therapod legs.

10. Summer or winter?
Summer. I don't like the cold, but I really like spring the best, it is like the earth wakes up. All the new green is so good for the eyes.

11. Rain or Sun?
Both, at the same time.

12. What's your favourite type of music?
I would know. I have been listening to classic pop and rock lately. The old folk songs are brilliant.

13. PC or Mac?
I want a Mac. I have a PC

14. Anime or Manga?
Manga. The art and the pictorial flow of the stories.

15.
I'm helping to build a very large deck on the family home. I seem to get the tricky precise jobs, not that I'm too bothered by that. There is definately a certain type of satifaction you get from a physical job, especially if its done well.
Plus I get to listen to all the Radio New Zealand National that I want. It's good you should try it.

Somebody got hurt today. They were in a fast car which crashed. This car was driven by what is coliquially called 'a pack of young hoons'. So one of these yoofs (at least) was badly injured and almost died, he's in the hospital right now.
I am not saying that this is a good thing that this happened, it happened. Someone was driving too fast and showing off to his mates. It happens. All over the country and indeed, the world, young hoons of various kinds are showing off in front of their mates and having near misses and ocationally, accidents. Some of them die. This happens. Perhaps this is the reason that the human population of the earth is 51% female as the young men kill themselves off.
Now this young man's mum wants to get the driving age raised. She said so on national television. Good for her, I say, but it ain't gonna happen. People (including politicians) have demanded that the driving age should be raised for years. It has not happened. It will not happen.
If it did happen, what would be done? How old is old enough to drive a car responsibly? At what point do young men start to drive sensibly? 16? 17? 23? 48? Make it compusary to have thrid party insurance so the little bastards that like to race up and down the street in the middle of the night can't afford to own them. Confiscate the cars? Put a decibel limit on the cars? Ban fun?
This is a tricky one to solve... and personal responsiblity is something that not many want to admit exists.

If we are going to be reactionary, I feel the best way to solve this problem is to simply ban men from driving full stop, and while we are at it, to prevent so much violent crime, rape and forgotten birthdays, lets just make the bastards wear floor length sheets over their heads and make sure they are accompanied by a female relative at all times. That should fix it (well maybe not the birthdays).

... You got me!
Thanks to , here comes eight random things.
The rules are as follows:
a) post said rules
b) post eight random facts about yourself (there's an unspoken rule that they should be weird/funny/amusing)
c) post parts a) and b) in a journal
d) tag eight more people (in the journal, as per part c) )
e) inform your victims the tagged people on their page

1) I never seem to finish anything. I mean it. Just about everything I do is half arsed in some way, it has a ritual. I start the project, I make some head way then I put it down and say "I will work on it tomorrow", put down the project and walk away. Ha, but tomorrow never comes. Sometimes I cut out all the work and just "put away" the idea. I have stacks of drawings and sketches and notes saved for some kind of rainy day.

2) I collect turns of phase. My current favourite is "as mad as a gumdigger's dog".

3) I once broke my toe on a piglet. We both screamed.

4) I wear too much black, it even makes me depressed. As an antidote to this I have developed an affection for pashminas. I also have a liking for brightly coloured basketball sneekers.

5) I swear far too much.

6) I love chasing fish. Give a snorkel and fins and I'll be out in the water all day, just following the fish around.

7) I would live in a library if I could.

8) I own a scooter. I don't really mind getting wet because I get parking anywhere and spend pennies on gas. I am however thinking of getting a motorcycle, I like speed, something a scooter lacks, sadly.

Now I'm supposed to tag people. My list is pathetically small. Luckily I'm wearing my anti-hex undergarments...

Please don't hate me guys!
