Last night I started reading some of my own comments to my drawings and finding it amusing, kept reading right up to my first drawings. You know, I realised it was like reading a journal on my art work. I could see the progression in my learning, the ups and downs, my own views of my work at the time and how far IÂve come Â all self taught. I have to say, I really enjoyed it and had a new appreciation for my own work.

ItÂs easy to criticise your work and good too, I think. If you canÂt see the mistakes you make, you may never move on. But itÂs also good to step back from your work from time to time and be pleased with the things that are good. What a great thing all these thoughts and views of your own work, something I may never have done if not for dA.

On a different topic, just wanted to share a shot of mum and me, on one of our outings this week.

Have you missed me?? I've certainly missed you guys.
As you may know my hubby and I moved continents just over a year ago and at the beginning of this year I started a graphic design and advertising course. I've been doing it part time (evening classes) and working part time..it's been a pretty full on year.

Now the classes are coming to an end and I'm looking forward to no more homework for a while. But to top it off, just in our last couple of lessons of digital art classes we started doing portraits. WELL, you can imagine I was looking forward to that!!! And how AWESOME has it been...

Dare I say it, I actually (for the moment, will it last?) enjoy it more that traditional drawing and I spent 20 hours on the colour one (I'll upload the black and white one too). Although that sounds a lot, it isn't really and considering it's only my second digital portrait, I know I'll get quicker at it.

Some of you out there will likely be thinking: oh no, another wannabe digital artist...Yeah, perhaps you're right. But I gotta give it a go and see where it takes me...

Now all I need is a wacom board HAHAHA!

Well it's only taken me a couple of months to write a new journal, so you can just imagine how much drawing I've been doing.... NONE! Unfortunately setting up a new life goes fairly quickly, finding a new routine not so much

Although I've been unemployed for three months now, being home all day doesn't necessarily mean you have loads of time I've discovered

I always dreamed of being home all day and just being able to design and draw, and now it's here, let me tell you, there's still always 'life' happening. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love it and once I decided to enjoy it and not feel guilty that I was bumming around the house all day, I really love it.

My studies however do take many hours of my days and it has left me with no time for drawing. I'm confident I will get back to it one day, and also get back to regular visits to dA.

My hubby and I absolutely love our new life in Adelaide. Althought the winter is of course nothing like the European one, without a heater, let me tell you can still freeze your butt off

I'm very happy for skype though, I still get to see my Mum and talk to her regularly and don't feel so far away from the ones you miss that way.

As you probably know, my hubby and I moved across the world three months ago and well let's say, it's been a little hectic.

The major things that have happened? Well, we're still staying with the in-laws

but we both have jobs and since two days are the proud new owners of a 4,5 bedroom house, with open plan kitchen and living room, nice dining room and drumroll...... a solar heated pool and spa!

Welcome to Australia!!!

But seriously, it is an amazing blessing to be set up like this within three months, with good jobs and such luxury.

We just have to stick it out one more month with the folks while the bank prepares our money

And then it'll be renovation time. Meanwhile I haven't done any drawing for three months, just been too stuffed. But once we move into our new place, I'll have my own room to call a studio

and I swear, I'm gonna get to it again.

As you may know, my hubby and I are moving to Austalia and with all the organising and business with a full-time job I've had very little time for dA lately (and drawing

too )

So hereby I apologise to you guys for the little attention you've received from me, however I can't promise it will get better. In fact, it may get worse in the next two months.

We finish our jobs half way through July and fly out the 4th Aug. Until then, I can imagine our lives will probably get busier.

So hang in there my friends, I am working on a drawing, but as opposed to the usual 8 hours a week I usually have time for, I'm now reduced to about 1 hour a week for drawing.

Hope you're all doing well.

A tiny update on my life for those who are interested.
My hubby and I are preparing to leave the Netherlands, where we've lived for 7 years now and move back to Australia.

We had initially planned to stay in Europe for about 5 years to enjoy travelling and living here.
We're in the middle of trying to sell our house, and look forward to packing up and going as soon as that's happened. Right now we've had around 7 viewers in as many weeks, so a steady flow, but no one really interested enough to make an offer. Also the market is slow at the moment, there's so much on offer.

The fun news is that my oldest brother and his wife have just decided to do the same, so we're going through the same process, which is exciting.

Got back from our snowboarding holiday yesterday, and it was an absolute blast: there was plenty of snow

and nobody got hurt

We didn't take any pictures this time however, only video and lots of it, because we want to make a mini film of all the footage.

but in the meantime catch up on a weeks worth of recorded Law and Orders, House episodes, Project Runway and a movie or two

I've been wondering something for a while now.

When I first started on dA (a year and a half ago), it seemed the focus was more on art and commenting. Now when I go to check my messages, I have more journal notices and way less comments.

Don't get me wrong, I love talking and interacting with my friends. In fact I've met some really great people, and love

catching up with them and reading about what they're up to. But ultimately I'd like it if people took the time to comment on something they also faved, and give a little upbuilding criticism. And even if you feel the piece is overall good, but there's a few bits here and there that need work: then say so, right? Don't hold back, be picky, that's how we learn. After all, we all wanna improve.

I hope this is coming out right and would love to hear your views on it.

Now the time has come to move back to Australia.

We both feel strongly about needing and wanting peace and space in our lives, and staying here is not going to give us that.
Living in Adelaide will, as we experienced again when we were on holidays recently. ItÂs a city of one million people, but the population per square km is 600 people, as opposed more than 4000

in Gouda per square km (where we live now). And you can really tell the difference.

The house prices in Adelaide have sky-rocketed

, almost tripled since we left nearly 7 years ago and are still rising, as is the interest rate. For this reason weÂve decided to go as soon as possible, which will be around May 2008. Because no matter how much you save, if the prices keep going up, youÂll end up with a bigger mortgage.

It was a fairly easy decision to make, and very exciting

but everything since the decision has not been easy. Not for me in any case. Leaving my family is hard, and leaving our friends and good lives too. Everywhere I go at the moment, IÂm having to start saying goodbye and letting go of things. Plus there's a lot to organise and sell our house here too. All of it together, very emotional and tiring.

I did the move once before, on my own when I was 20 and it was all so much easier then. But I know things will be good and exciting once weÂre there. But for those staying behind it will be very empty. For my mum

in particular, so if you have a little time, send her some dA love

, she can ALWAYS use it.

In any case there's still Christmas

to look forward to and other occassions before we go to spend with my family, which we'll make the most of.

Truth is, weÂre both different people now and things change. But itÂs getting a little better and my brother (who happens to be over here for a holiday at the same time) recognises it and says that ÂhomeÂ feeling will come after a week or so.

In any case weÂve been really busy catching up with family and friends (my Dad, my hubbyÂs parents and our best mates) and still havenÂt gotten over the jetlag, which my body told me today: overtired and emotional

need to pace myself.

So no time for drawing at all unfortunately yet, but maybe it will come. For now IÂm gonna take an afternoon nap and let you all know I still love yaÂs! and miss you all heaps.

It's been crazy

at both our jobs in the last couple of weeks, trying to finish things off before we go (and it still is) and on top of that we've had stuff to organise at home too (a shed was being built at home).

This weekend we're still organising things, presents for people to take, going to the hairdresser

, buying new clothes and packing and then next week we're both working right up until Wed and fly off in the evening

But is won't be long and we'll be seeing my family

(my Dad and aunties) and all our friends, one of which is getting married

- which is the reason we're going.

Soooo, as for drawing, I haven't had much chance, but am working on one that I'm quite happy with so far and hope to upload before I go. Because once in Australia, I won't have a chance to upload any work.

I will try to go online while there and keep in touch a little, but I don't know how much I'll be able to.....

Barcelona is one of those cities that has it all: Great architecture, hills, beach, music, art and nice weather. I've fallen in love with the work of Antoni Gaudi, a Spanish architecture born in the 1800s.

Here's a few photos I took of his work. These were a part of a wall in the Guell park, a park named after a close friend of Gaudi. I added the colour borders in photoshop.

I've been thoroughly inspired by our trip, saw some great artists (which I wish I could share with you, but you're just gonna have to go yourselves

) and we even went to see the new Simpsons movie

My hubby and I are off to Barcelona tomorrow night

One more day of work and then holidays

It will be our first whole weeks holiday this year. We didn't go snowboarding this year, because of the crappy winter and we only had a long weekend to Vienna in the spring. That's because we're also saving our precious free days for our trip to AUSTRALIA in Nov this year

Yay!!

One of my friends (who was also my bridesmaid) is getting married and after being away from Australia for more than 6 years now, we felt it was time to go.

Anyhoo, now we have 4 days in Barcelona and the rest of the week home, which I plan to do lots of drawing and go shopping with my mum

And of course catching up on all YOUR new works too.

I've used one on and off, since my hubby made me one about a year ago or so. But it's unfinished, and therefore not altogether handy.

This is one of the reason (I repeat: ONE of the reasons) that some of my drawings have proportional problems. When you draw on a flat surface I've discovered, you get a distorted perspective, and then when you lift up the drawing, you suddenly see things outa wack.

It's not easy to actually find a good portable drawing table/drafting table

, because most are actual tables, which I don't have the room for. But if worst comes to worst, my hubby has promised to finish the one I have.

Anyhoo.
Thought I'd share that with you guys, also curious to hear about your drawing surface experiences or even if you know a good place to buys one

A huge cheer for my hubby who ran the Rotterdam Marathon on Sunday, in what had never happened before: 30 degree heat!!! I'm so proud of him

Truth is, I know I'm really bad a creating things from scratch, even if it's just a background.

But I ventured into it very carefully and slowly got more confident at it.

Now, I see that a background can create more 3D-ness, giving a portrait more depth. I particularly find this with my latest few drawings.

I would encourage those that are afraid to try it, worried to stuff up an otherwise great piece, to do it anyways. And I've found that using a tissue is a great way for blending, and fast too.

Maybe no mindblowing revelation, but just thought I'd share that

As much as I've looked around and tried to come up with something completely different, it hasn't worked (this time).

However, I am very happy with my latest drawing.

Onwards and upwards, I will come up with something new yet.

Actually I've given my husband the assignment to find something he would like me to draw.

I'm taking a little break from drawing, and doing some other creative stuff. Just finished making a business card for me mum, and a wedding invite for a colleague and will probably work on birthday calendar (filled with Battlestar Galatica pics, the new serie, not the old

) for our kitchen wall.

I would like some different subjects for my drawing when I go back to it, not just the usual pretty face

(I think I go through this every couple of portraits, then never come up with anything new

- and eventually go back to the same thing again)

Well, I'll be hunting for some new things to draw

So I'm continueing the experiment of famous, pretty people portraits, and I must say, I'm not dissapointed. I first did the Natalie one, just to see if more people view these kind of portraits.... and now my Natalie is my most viewed, most commented and almost most favoured portrait.....

Next one..... haven't decided yet, maybe some non-famous people. Anyone out there that would like their portrait done?

1. I hate bubbles of any kind, in soup, air bubbles under stickers etc. and feel a great urge to pop them!!
2. I play with the rings I wear almost all the time. (sometimes when I'm not wearing them, I go to play with them and realise they're not there!)
3. My husband and I go to Star Trek conventions

in Europe and the USA - we're the only non-weird people there

4. I wear black lingerie 90 percent of the time
5. I cannot draw without listening to music

(probably not very weird)
6. I am constantly analysing myself to see if I can improve on: myself, my relationships, my education, my use of time etc. (dont' really know if it's working

)

I want more of my own creativity in a piece. However, the cartoony aspect I think is not gonna work.

I was checking out someone's art

yesterday, just beautiful looking, photo-like pieces (mostly Christine Aguilera). One of the pieces this person did exactly what I did with my last two, realism mixed with a cartoony look....... I didn't like it. That is, I didn't like it as much as the other work.

So back to the drawing board (hehe)

I went to see Tears for Fears last night with my husband (they were part of a annual concert called Night of the Proms) and had the BEST experience yet at a concert

I sat the row closest to the stage, on the side (my husband a few rows up, couldn't get seats together), in fact, right on top of the artists entrance, the steps that lead to the huge stage.

Very excited to finally see TFF

, first time in my life (been a fan since 1872), artists came and went and I was enjoying the music and huge orchestra and choir.

Then suddenly in the dark, walking up the stairs, I saw Roland !!!!!!!

(lead singer of TFF) My heart jumped and skipped, I got up out of my seat and couldn't believe my eyes

. There he was!!!! The orchestra played Mad World and Curt (other TFF member) sang while Roland played guitar. Totally awesome, both sing like they're still teenagers!

So they did four songs, big cheers and came down the stairs again.

At that moment I thought, this is my chance: I yelled: I LOVE YOU ROLAND.....but he didn't hear......
He got down the bottom of the stairs and hugged a woman there for a while.

This was the intermission now, so my husband came down. I said : look there he is!!! Would he hear me now? Yeah go for it, he said.

I LOVE YOU ROLAND, I yelled again, and now he looked up, surprised. I blew him a kiss and said I LOVE YOU MATE, and he smiles, blew me a kiss back and smiled again............then walked off.

Well I just jumped on my husband and jumped up and down, that was such a cool, fun moment!!!!!!

Ok, so I thought, they won't come back, they've done four songs, but then there he was again, waiting to go on while some spanish style song was playing. He started dancing to it

, some funny movement and then looked straight up, to see if I was watching .... hihihi, so I gave him a

(for his dance) and a wink! He smiled back! hahahaha, it just doesn't get any better than that!!!!!!!!!!

So you understand my next drawing has to be a Roland, however I've exhausted all internet options of finding a good photo...... If anyone has good photos they wanna share or sell, please let me know!!

It's one thing to go to a concert and enjoy yourself and know many of the songs, but it's entirely another to go to a concert and just adore and know EVERY single text, note, riff, base line, ooh and aahs .....

There's only maybe one or two bands or artists in your life that some up who you are. Keane is that for me. (Tears for Fears the other Oh and ELO)

Had so much fun with my friend I went with too, we screamed so much

and annoyed the heck out of the people behind us probably, because we were standing the whole time!!

Unfortunate thing was, the speakers it seems on our side weren't working properly, and the singers voice wasn't heard properly throughout it...

But a great show they put on with strobe lights and film, JUST AWESOME

SO NOW, I'm two days into a new drawing, something a little different. I hope it works out, should post it end of week, maybe beginning next week.

Gettin kinda tired of this inbetween weather

My husband and I are trying to organise our
wintersport holiday

with my brother, but as it stands now,
it's lookin' kinda bleak cos of the warm temperatures......

Anyhoo, I found something to draw (see last entry). I'm working on two
drawings for a colleague who's turning 60 next week - he's always been
very positive about my drawings and I wanna surprise him with
one of himself and one of his partner. I'll hopefully post them both
at the end of the week and get your opinion on the female one, cos I need some tips....

I won't say my days of emoticons is over, but after completing
two new drawings, I've got the taste for it again.

My latest one is a Star Trek one, a captain of one of the
series and I'm just making some final touches today and
will post it probably tomorrow.

Had a great time in the States by the way, NY was as impressive and
exciting as I expected and the Star Trek convention....well....what can I say,
we had a ball.
I posted some of our holidays shots, check em out in my gallery. We even
got into the David Letterman Show too, which was awesome!

Well, I'm not exactly leaving today, but close enough. I'm leaving in a day and I may not get another chance to do this.

So long everyone, it'll be two weeks before I can sign in again. I'll be running in Central Park, going to a night court and checking the statue of Liberty as well as shopping (if my husband let's me) and checking out Ground Zero.

And after 5 days of that, we're off to Vegas to get rich!! Ha, I wish, no, we're actually gonna spend heaps. We're going to a Star Trek convention (40th anniversary celebration) and no, we do not dress up!!

I started drawing two years ago and never stopped.... until now. A colleague of mine showed me how to use Image Ready and I've been hooked since! The tough thing now is to keep coming up with good ideas for a new smiley.

So if anyone has any ideas or requests, I'm all ears (o, there's one right there!! a smiley with big ears!)

In any case, I'm going on holidays in a week and a half (to NY and Vegas,

) and there won't be any computer. I'll be taking my drawing stuff as usual, so I'm sure I'll have a new drawing in about three weeks.......
