Well, I COULD NOT MAKE UP MY MIND... I liked THREE.
So, as my rules said, I'm giving out a couple of one-month subscriptions. And a three-month for someone who put in some extra effort.

[EDIT: A current list of Entries lives HERE.]

It's my birthday in a couple of days; my subscription runs out the day before. My original goal was to have won a subscription by this point; however, this goal was subsumed by work.

So I'm giving them away instead!

For a three-month subscription, either make, modify or point me at a DevArt skin and/or Journal CSS that I utterly love. Yep, you can win this just by finding the perfect stock skin or stock Journal CSS, and sending me the link! I'll send the original author a subscription also. See, praising others has its own rewards :}

If you throw in an icon that you made yourself, I'll make it a six-month subscription.

If I don't fall in love with anything submitted, I'll still give out at least two one-month subscriptions to my favourite entries.

You have: HahaHA. TWO WEEKS FROM NOW. Until midnight October 22, 2007, Brisbane/Australia time!

Judges: Me.

The DA Skin and/or Journal CSS must:

1. Look "minimalist", "classic" or "vintage"
2. Be extremely easy to read at a glance
3. Have no animated features
4. Be quick to load
5. NOT include: "Mood:/Listening to:/Reading:/Watching:/Playing:/Eating:/Drinking:"
6. Include a section where I can feature deviations from my Faves gallery
7. Include a link to my gallery and my Faves gallery

The Skin/CSS MIGHT include:

1. Some of the stock textures found in my Faves gallery
2. Elements of nude or figure stock from my Faves gallery (luckily there's a glut of fantastic models here!), especially vintage photo stock. Please be careful to obey the stock rules, or your entry will be invalid.
3. Elements of, or textures from, pictures I've drawn/painted (You can use what you want from my gallery for this contest, but look at the Artist's Comments carefully. If my comments credit DA stock YOU MUST note the stock artist FIRST and RECEIVE PERMISSION TO USE IT.).
4. Lovely seamy textures (rust, scrubby paint, old photo plates, old paper)
5. Collage! Don't be afraid to use all sorts of media.

Again, less is better - I'd prefer tiny slivers of deviations, or even just colours sampled from them, to overkill.

Examples of Journal CSSes I love:

^thespook's "vintage journal CSS"
White-Glowing

The icon must:
1. NOT be animated.

The icon may:

1. Include any of the concepts or stock mentioned above.

(If you need examples, note me and I'll put them up in this post.)

---
If you need clarification of anything above, or can help me publicise the contest, note me.

And if you have an entry: Send it via note!

Thanks :}

From *Jardel-Karabella
[The first person starts with the topic "six weird facts about yourself" and people who get tagged must write in their journals about their six weird facts as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose the next six people to be tagged and list their names.]

1. I strongly dislike doing things I'm told I "must" do.

2. I don't think that the above is necessarily rational, prosocial, or useful "dislike" to possess, and I get shitty when people claim it is. It is not always useful to be a special snowflake. There are times when everyone needs to bleat so that we can all get along EFFICIENTLY and SPEEDILY with the bigger things in life*; and sometimes it's politic to bleat because it spares you early martyrdom. Changing the system from within can be a surprisingly efficient way to go. Moving on:

3. I don't think "I'm just telling it like it is!" is an adequate excuse for poor social skills, nor do I think anyone should be proud of it. You're telling it how you see it; you may be inaccurate; you are definitely quite arrogant and socially lazy. It's nothing to be particularly happy about. Get over yourself. It's even more socially lazy than saying "I'm shit with names!".**

4. I specialise in children who have notable deficiencies in social, emotional, and behavioural skills. I can send you links to picture books, novels, psychology texts, websites and therapists who can help. SAY THE WORD and I will PROD YOU WITH MY WORLD WIDE WEB.

The number for today is 4. The letter for today is apparently V for Vent. Now clean air blows through.

*I have been responsible for the care of some obstreperous little individuals lately. I am just starting to get across to them that I do not always have time to explain my motives, and that obedience is profitable, for if they do what I ask them to do, when I ask them to do it, their safety and wellbeing is assured and I will be PLEASED TO SPEND TIME ENSURING THEIR HAPPINESS ALSO. Yes, sometimes a teacher will accidentally tell a child to do something stupid. But if the kid normally does what we ask, we will listen if they suddenly say "No".

**On "I'm shit with names". If you can't remember names, look up mnemonic techniques for name recall and actually use them. Or ask socially successful people how they recall names. I did, others have, you can learn (unless you have an neurological disorder which affects your memory, word recall or word storage). I swear, the next time I smile and introduce myself to some swaggering male shit who grins and says, "Yeah, I'm [so-and-so], what's your name (and then before I can reply) but I've got to warn you I'm shit with names, I'll forget it within the next five minutes!" -- well, I'm going to say, "Ah, and I see you're shit with social skills as well?" Don't say that, please. It makes me feel devalued.

I'm in the mood for zig-zag, and I'm taking no prisoners. Help?

My last reconditioned husqvarna tried to burn the house down, so I'm getting a new one (at least that way the insurance'll cover me).
I need a machine that:

(a) is between $150 and $350 Australian, new.

(b) is VERY hardy when used for craft - ie when sewing several layers of fabric and/or felt and interfacing during applique, they do not wheeze and die of a thousand knots (I almost wrecked ^animator 's little toyota model by trying to hem an iron-on screenprint).

(c) is easy to do buttonholes on (3 steps or less preferred, pleeeze!)

(d) has a wide range of zig-zag widths to choose from.

(e) can stitch backwards when I press the foot pedal (ie I should not have to turn the handle manually).

(f) has a reliable zipper foot for invisible zippers.

Lincraft is having a sale on Brothers, Husqvarnas and Singers. Available machines are:

Brother XL-2230 $199 (and possibly more)
Husqvarna E20, E10 and C20 (unsure on pricing)
and various Singers (bloody catalogue doesn't specify which ones!)

It's 5:10pm. I've got a backache, a headache and a half-finished, blobby drawing of a mermaid sitting on a dead goldfish. No idea if it will still qualify for the contest. No idea if i'll be able to finish the little fucker. Feeling very cross. Going off to finish a book instead.
I want to be able to draw like this:

Still no idea how to produce those types of tints and shades digitally; a little bird has told me multiply is helpful for the shadows. Brush type/style seems to have a great deal to do with it too. Any hints?

I'm learning to use photoshop, thanks to my dad's faux-wacom tablet and 's assistance. It's utterly delightful to be able to get paint and pastel effects without getting the grime everywhere! Hee, finally I can draw in bed! the ultimate luxury!

I would love a little bit of your help...
Could you recommend me your favourite tutorials on drawing using textures, layers, and charcoal-like/paint-like brushes? also, could you let me know which tools you have used to smudge, squish, or stretch areas of your image?

I think I've found the "smudge" tool (the hand with the pointing finger) but I want to find the tool that is used to get a stretching/shrinking/squishing/pulling effect on the selected portion.

I'd like to fix up the skew-wiff proportions of my latest drawing, without having to re-draw it...

hug!
thankyou!
Context: I'm getting extremely irritated with my acne. It's under control, almost. With $25 worth of products per week, I'm down to only one or two new pimples per day. But I'd like not to have to scrub a minging OIL SLICK off two or three times daily to ensure this.
I would like to - let's face it - rip the top layer off my face, and be done with it.

Am back to using decent contes and pastels, and decent paper. Aaaah.
Actually, for 'using', read 'almost used up'. Am out of black conte again, and almost out of dark brown. What's a wench to do?

Past solutions have included:
-painting with coffee (lasting result, but a lightish brown when mixed with white acrylic to get the texture I want)

-painting with vegemite (short term good result; turns green eventually, plus there's a small smell to consider)

-painting with leftover hair dye (need a bigger canvas and thicker paper - the stuff is gloppy and never dries!)

-painting with Neapolitan icecream (colour is too light; may attract cats.)

Am considering doing a Matisse, cutting up bits of the black Montmartre paper, and sticking them on with white acrylic, so i get some interesting gloppiness around the edges.

Actually, wait. I've got black paint somewhere.

Want to know why? Because I spent two hours last night just trying to get Montmartre conte crayons to make a MARK on the PAGE.

Instead, they made deep, clean, shiny dents, and lots of chalk dust.

Perhaps I mistook CLAY-WORKING TOOLS for, I DON'T KNOW, CONTES, which they were SUPPOSED TO BE, AS STATED ON THE LABEL. Or perhaps they are renegade Ikea dowel rods, escaping a life of servitude and imitation Danish modernism.

I would go and write rude graffiti about Montmartre in public toilets, but the paint would probably slide right off.

Anyway, I found my expensive pastels, so tomorrow I can go and start, you know, DRAWING, which is what I spent last night TRYING to do.

"[...] I'm ... opposed to the increasing presence in our organization of webscabs, who post their creations on the net for free. A scab is someone who works for less than union wages or on non-union terms; more broadly, a scab is someone who feathers his own nest and advances his own career by undercutting the efforts of his fellow workers to gain better pay and working conditions for all. Webscabs claim they're just posting their books for free in an attempt to market and publicize them, but to my mind they're undercutting those of us who aren't giving it away for free and are trying to get publishers to pay a better wage for our hard work.
