i've been obsessed with reading them lately.

i love love love a good online comic. i like them as long as possible and they must have amazing art.

here's a list of what i'm reading lately:

Two Keys by ~nuu man i can NOT get enough of nuu's style. i saw this comic, not knowing who drew it but within one page, i knew instantly. it is THAT recognizable. to top it off this comic does something for me that few do: i can hear the characters. they have enough individuality that i hear colin's voice (well, my mental interpretation of it) in my head. i can read this like i would watch a movie. important!

Two Rooks by Alice i love this. it gets dense and heady sometimes, but the sarcastic, dry humor shines through throughout.

Metanoia by ~StarTyrian (with some art by ~melukilan) if the first chapter/page doesn't strike you as artistically impressive...KEEP READING. the art (from both artists) and the story are impressive. i sit patiently and wait for the next updates...

Kagerou by ~AtomicFireball (i have been following kagerou for a fucking long time & i'm continually impressed. this thing has 46 chapters! 46 HOLY CRAP. and it's still going!

The Meek by `alexds1 what's that? you haven't heard of The Meek? WHAT. FULL COLOR. AWESOME ART. the plot keeps going and going! i'm excited for this one because it's pretty rare that you see this level of coloring done on a comic, especially an online one.

and a few artist pimps:

ghost green / emilee / riptide. if ever i coveted another artist's style, this is it. it's gorgeous.

~LEPPU WATERCOLORS?
it is not safe to intersect me when i want to know something. lately i feel like a beast out for blood. i want to KNOW something. my teeth itch to sink into something like this...

so prepare yourself for a long rant. kudos to you if you read it all

i feel a little out of balance because artistically, i rely on a lot of personal (internal) feedback. i get a lot of ideas and opinions from myself. i think about art, and what it means to and for me a great deal. an enormous amount of my time drawing is involved with "what am i doing? am i trying to accomplish anything? does this mean something?"

I WANT TO KNOW. what do other artists do? what are their motives? the modus operandi of the body artistic is lost on me! i don't have to understand totally. i don't need to! i just want to understand SOME. MORE than i do now.

art to me is the closest thing to religion i have. it's something i believe in. it's a BYOS scenario. Be Your Own Savior. no man is born into this, the league of artists with all the skills they need, right?

i want to know about growth. are you as an artist concerned with vertical growth? getting better just for your own (or your viewer's) satisfaction? vertical growth is like starting a small business and expecting to be a multi-national company one day. or at least having a stable, recognized business. it's not all in a corporate fashion. you don't necessarily want the notoriety, just the ability. like a soccer player who wants to be great, but doesn't have to be on a national team.

i want to grow little vertically, and more horizontally. i want to "travel" in art. to build a web (connections rather than structures) over many different PARTS of the surface of the art world. i hope that, by traveling, i can even discover some new places. meet with others like myself. it is a more psychological aspect of the art method.

a lot of artists, i presume, feel inhibited. it's a creative dilemma. you know what you want to do. you just can't do it. we all do this. it's natural! it's a perfectly natural sensation. when you have the ideas and the foundations for the skills. you just can't move.

a major mistake for anyone (moving either vertically or horizontally) is to try and push this boundary too hard, too fast. where does that get you. you waste all your energy shattering the wall and now that you're on the other side, you don't know what to do. should have taken your time and climbed over instead.

i am in love with balance. it is vital in life. i don't want to say "wait, don't tackle that wall yet", but at the same time saying "give it all you got!" is equally foolish. think more in terms of "take that wall right now, but don't rush it."

i can't keep up with this.

i'm the type to feel as though i'm always on the hunt. my head is always full, ideas and thoughts and concepts always rolling around in there like the roughest sea. i want to, like a wild beast, sink my teeth into something and feel it bleed. because the blood is the thing i'm after. it's the understanding part. if i can't kill it, i'll choke it and force it to tell me what i want to know.

SO YOU.

where are you going. what holds you up artistically? where are you traveling to? are you going up or out? do you, like me, have an insanity-inducing want to understand something? what is it.

i want to fill at least one person's head with so much fodder that they can't hardly take it. the feeling of being pushed to the edge is an adrenaline junkie's dream. but to come back OFF the edge is equally addicting. to say "i went there" and "i came back" are two separate things.

NOW. talk to me. ask me anything. CHALLENGE ME if you want! i am not afraid to be wrong!

WAAAY down there. like, where the pelvis meets the spine low. it's slowly working it's way out, at the expense of my hips & legs.

i'm feeling really really rounded out today. tired, almost.

time for some music recommendations, don't you think?

"swing tree" by discovery. i hated discovery the first time i heard them. this is the only song i like of theirs. particularly the line i now use as my signature.

"your moon" by sun airway. i just wanted, to be your moon. alone in your night sky

"wa habibi" by fairuz. middle-eastern holy song. it is quite hauntingly beautiful. who gives a shit if you understand what she's saying it's still a pretty song.

"quitters raga" by gold panda. this song breaks my heart with it's severe brevity. WOE! anyway. it's a weird combination of electronic/dubstep + digital detritus + traditional indian/middle eastern music & vocals. something else.

"january twenty something" by why?. i'm so psyched for the new album (due out in september).

"bicycle" by memory tapes. i'm in love, with you little sister...

"the purple bottle" by animal collective. why yes, i am trying to link to this song as many times as possible before i die.

"brotherhood of death" by apollo sunshine. i get the weirdest Jim Jones vibe from this song. maybe it's that quiet "take another sip." line or the fact that it's played in that '1970's preacher on film' voice.

▶ What is the character you've drawn the most (Can be original or fanart)?
i don't draw my 'own' characters, i don't have any. i've done about four pieces of fanart for *Chaz-the-Weasel, he's my homeboy. did a really fucked up fanart for bleach, recently, too.

▶ What colour do you most often use?
i like red ink a lot. in digital/traditional work, it's probably a yellow--->red gradient

▶ Any colour you are bad at using?
blues and purples.

▶ When drawing people, where do you start?
the eyes, usually, but it can be random parts of the body.

▶ What is a character only your eraser will love?
lol, erasers. ink artists hoooo. not necessarily a character, but i fuck up on arms a lot, digitally.

▶ Which of your works took the longest time?
recently, this. otherwise, i can't really remember :I

▶ What techniques do you use when you want to improve in drawing?
shit, i don't know. i tend to draw a lot of the same stuff over and over, really specifically. like hands, feet, hairstyles, clothes.

▶ What art tools/media are you good with?
considering i don't mess up a lot and do a lot of detail, ink. i can work my way around the block with a good pen.

▶ Art tools/media you are bad at?
paint of any kind. pastels, i hate those. chalk is worse.

▶ What do you think about your own art?
it's rather unusual and unstable. it's flawed, but i like it like that, usually. also not very accessible and shows my lack of training.

▶ Do you consult magazines for your drawings?
if anything, i check out fashion blogs for inspiration (an online magazine, of sorts?)

▶ What do you like about your art?
it's like a shunt from my brain onto my paper. a good example of what i think about.

▶ What habits do you have while drawing?
must have music, and often something to drink. if not music, some kind of background noise. i can't work in silence.

▶ Are you good at drawing faces facing right?
somewhat. being right-handed i have a habit of having them face my left. i'm trying to break it.

▶ How frequently do you draw?
daily, if i can. if nothing else i just doodle nonsense.

▶ What do you do when you have artist's block?
i try to keep my head. i know it'll come back eventually. i usually just get frustrated. i draw a lot more than usual trying to get back in the swing. if it takes a long time, i just say "fuck it" and take a few days to a week off and try again. that usually works.

▶ What must you have when you draw?
good temperature and low volume noise. i need background noise, but it can't be really loud, otherwise i get a headache. i like drawing outside, but it's getting too muggy for that lately. has to be somewhere comfortable.

▶ Do you have a lot of stray lines (messy lineart)?
when i'm drawing drawing, no. drawing in ink prevents that from happening, usually. when i'm just doing linework for something (digital), yeah, tons.

▶ What is drawing to you?
religion.

▶ Your goal from now on:
do what i can in stride. not feel pressured by myself or others. draw whatever i can from my own imagination (best source of inspiration). i need to draw more, period. and draw more of the things i 'see' in my head.

▶ Artists you've had influence from?
(in no particular order
al hirschfeld (fuuuuuuuuck), mucha, collin (~collinZzZz), kubo basically anyone else on my watchlist, f'reals.

▶ Artists you like?
see list above, plus hellishly long list in addition.

▶ Which is easier to draw, humans or animals?
animals, by some small margin.

▶ Please tell us the title(s) of your own comic(s)
i don't have one.

▶ Show us an old picture
uh, i don't have anything online handy. let me check my dA storage: this is from may 13, 2005

▶ What is...

i had a really interesting dream last night! it revisited a dream i had already had some weeks ago, too.

the last dream i had involved me being in a house that was set up like one of my relative's homes. someone had burst into my room (where my cousin's room would have been), and once they left, i arranged the shattered door frame on the floor so that it could be lifted and fixed.

so in this dream i had that door frame. while i was asleep (in the dream), something attacked me in my sleep. i was dreaming (in the dream!) about a statue very much like the statue of liberty. i was climbing up her shoulder, and onto her outstretched hand. the statue had a blue and purple cape with a giant "A" on the front.

it looked like a sixties/seventies crappy movie effect, but the statue's face (which was a bunch of windows) was smashed in and the whole thing fell down.

as i woke, this thing attacked me. i looked down and my right arm was torn to shreds and my left hand only dangled from a bit of skin on my wrist.

i ripped my left hand off with what strength i had in my right, and put it in a chest. i then crafted a metal skeleton hand, and wrapped a fine wire around it to make a new hand. oddly enough, the hand worked PERFECTLY.

i was then in a very messy, very fast-moving kitchen. my right arm was still half numb and damaged (i imagine my arm was actually going numb in reality, maybe i was sleeping weird). this little girl comes up to me and only screams at me, yelling gibberish stuff and one sentence. she only screams and asks me "WHY DON'T YOU KNOW MY NAME?". she has some kind of soft noodle for hair.

i'm given one hour to clean this kitchen. i don't, though, because this little girl just keeps yelling at me.

then for some reason i build a strange man an indoor grilling pit for his birthday. the grill itself is a neon blue. after he's all happy and stuff with it, i just sit and contemplate my wire hand.

i like the idea of having a wire hand.

sup.

you and i, let's talk about music in a matter most defined.

i'm really excited for Passion Pit's debut full-length album Manners to come out (mid-may, i think). i've heard three songs or so from it so far and i love them all.

they're "little secrets", "the reeling" and "moth's wings", the latter-most being my favorite.

passion pit's EP Chunk of Change was a real experience. i was startled by it because i actually liked all six of the songs that were on it. it's unusual that i like a majority of an artist's work like that. so far, this group has not disappointed me.

also i've been really wanting to listen to a lot of older stuff by The Shins. found an artist who's young, up and coming who sounds like a more mellow version of the shins, too. his name is avi buffalo (and here's The Shins' "so says i" for vocal comparison).

"rushing in, rushing out" by geographer has me swooning high too. i can't find the lyrics anywhere though, and i don't trust my hearing to get all of the words right (i'm waiting for your open arms, but i won't wait forever. when the river breaks, my eyes light up, but they don't look to heaven)

if you're looking for something exciting, may i suggest Dan Deacon's Bromst. it's so exciting. it's sounds like animal collective if animal collective didn't sound like some kind of extra-terrestrial acid trip. which isn't a bad thing.

Bromst ranges from ultra-energetic songs to slower, more relaxing tunes, which almost always gets a thumbs-up from me.
energetic like "paddling ghost" (which, if you're familiar with Deacon is reminiscent of "the crystal cat", if not a bit slower.)

"surprise stefani" is much slower (but it does build up a bit, too) but it's probably my favourite track on the album. you can stream the album over on pitchfork, which gave it a respectable 8.5 rating.

Twisted Wires is not a group i'm at all familiar with, i just stumbled upon them while browsing through the Hype Machine's new entries. i don't know what you call that style, but it has drums. i like drums and i like this song. it's haunting but somehow very comfortable.

and you? what have you been listening to lately?

so
i'm in an art history class that, while interesting, makes me think.

we tell the history of many artists and many styles of painting.
we talk about artists and we know their names, where they lived, the timeline of their lives and so on.

i mean, look at some of the renaissance artists. people KNEW who they were at the time they were alive. they had to have, or else we'd never know of them in the first place.

so where are the kings and queens of art today?
and what are their names?

1: write more, & write better.

2: more poses.

3: more colour experimentation.

4: more sketch pages.

5: more line & style variety.

i don't necessarily want to get a lot better, i just want to do different things.

i need to do more sketching. it's very good for warmups & practice. oddly enough, i didn't quite know that. i found myself getting frustrated when i couldn't produce something well on my first few tries. turns out, i need a good, long warmup first. i don't know how or why, but apparently i never quite learned that!

i'm so relative it's disgusting.

i can't say one thing without immediately realizing i'm being very hypocritical for saying so. i think too much on other options.

it's isn't that i'm not confident in what i say, it's just that i like acknowledging all pathways of interpretation. i love balance. i love space. acknowledging only one path of communication is not balanced, and it's a terrible way to abuse verbal space.

for example:
when i say that i hate jackson pollock's work. because it's boring and useless, i immediately think "well, mine is too, ultimately, but..."

i wouldn't say i was upset with the things i think or my own abilities, but i accept that's how it seems.

i will talk myself in circles about things. i'll think about a dream i had, and tell it in a story form, with a plot. then i balance myself out thinking about how it was probably multiple dreams in a non-sequential order and how i probably made up half of it...but i still tell it and think of it as one thing. it's a deconstructive and base way of doing things, but it works out eventually.
