Acclaimed jazz and rock guitarist Jeff Healey was remembered Sunday as a musician of rare ability who had a wicked sense of humour and a generous nature as fans and bandmates mourned his death at age 41, following a battle with cancer.

Bandmates of Canadian rock and jazz legend Jeff Healey were among those shocked by the news of his death Sunday.

Healey died Sunday evening in a Toronto hospital surrounded by family and a bandmate, Colin Bray.

Bray, the bass player with Jeff Healey's jazz Wizards and the frontman's long-time friend, said he and many others expected the guitarist to rally from this latest illness.

"I don't think any of us thought this was going to happen," Bray said in a telephone interview. "We just thought he was going to bounce back as he always does."

Healey had battled with cancer since the age of one when a rare form of retinal cancer known as Retinoblastoma claimed his eyesight.

Bray said Healey had been hospitalized for a week and that his advanced lung cancer made his final hours difficult.

Healey had undergone numerous operations in recent years to remove tumours from his lungs and leg.

Bray and fellow bandmate Gary Scriven remembered their frontman as not only a world-class musician but an incredibly strong person with the capacity to motivate those he worked with.

Scriven called Healey inspirational and praised the boundless enthusiasm that allowed him to continue performing live only four weeks before his death.

"He drew his strength from somewhere, I don't know where, but it spread among the band and flowed into the audience," Scriven said.

Healey rose to stardom as the leader of the Jeff Healey Band, a rock-oriented trio that garnered a Juno award, international acclaim and platinum record sales with the 1988 album "See the Light."

But Bray and Scriven said Healey's true love was jazz, the genre that dominated his last three albums with the Jazz Wizards.

Healey's guitar prowess was characterized by a unique playing-style that saw him lay the instrument across his lap.

It led him to share stages with such rock luminaries as George Harrison, Stevie Ray Vaughan and B.B. King, but Bray said jazz allowed him to exercise his other instrumental talents such as trumpet and drums.

Healey's love of jazz also led him to host radio shows on the CBC and a local Toronto station where he spun long-forgotten numbers from his personal collection of over 30,000 vinyl records.

But Bray said his "best friend" saw himself first and foremost as an entertainer and said Healey seemed to derive therapeutic benefits from playing live shows.

Recalling Healey's weakened condition at his final performance on Feb. 2 in Sarnia, Ont., Bray said Healey seemed to draw strength as the set progressed.

"At the end of it, I can't believe how much better he looked. It was like blood to him."

Healey's death came weeks before the release of his first rock album in eight years.

"Mess of Blues" is slated for a North American release on April 22.

Healey is backed on the album by the resident band at Jeff Healey's Roadhouse, the blues club he founded and named after a 1989 Patrick Swayze movie in which he appeared.

The album features two live tracks recorded in the last few months of his life.

The Grammy-nominated musician is survived by his wife Christie and two children; daughter Rachel, 13 and son Derek, 3.

Funeral and memorial arrangements have not yet been announced.

R.I.P.
Helloo

So my trip to Montreal was fantastic! Besides all of the french menus, those were terrible.
Anyways, we borded our train at around 7:30 Saturday morning, then arrived in Montreal at about 9:30, from then on we checked into our hotel and hit the underground shopping centres shortly after Needless to say we shopped the entire day (my legs are sore).
Then at around 8:00 pm we walked to "Adrenaline", which is a tattoo/piercing shop not too far from where we were staying.
So I decided on getting my tragus pierced (which was #5 for those of you who viewed the link I attached in my previous journal)[link]
Yeah, so the guy who pierced me (Mitch) was totally awesome! He was real talkative and super nice! I totally recommend him and Adrenaline if anyone's going to Montreal anytime soon to get pierced or inked!
Everyone looks at my tragus and gasps and asks me if it hurt.
Well honestly: no, not at all.
But then again I have a high pain tolerance and to top it all off I take three needles a day anyways.
I got a bar in it instead of a hoop, which is most common. I like the bar a lot better, it looks less tacky with all of my other piercings.

Anyways, that was my excitement this weekend!!

*I'll post some pictures of my piercing when I get home [I'm at work right now].

take care,

The 1st player of this "game" starts with the topic "6 weird habits/facts/dislikes about yourself" and people who get tagged must write in their journals about their 6 weird habits/facts/dislikes as well as state this rule clearly.

In the end, you need to choose the next 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don't forget to leave a comment that says "you're tagged" in their deviant page comments and tell them to read yours.

So a few of my friends and I (Megan & Alex) are throwing together a little 'band' and we're doing a couple covers at what we like to call 'Spring Fest' ... basically just a 'fun' day that our school puts together once a year. So basically what's goin on is that our local music shop sets up a stage outside our school, horray! I'm thinkin' this should be pretty fun. Anywhoo we have one practice night which is going to be this Friday (held in my garage, woot!) and then we're performing i think it's this Tuesday, June 5th. haha... we'll wing it

Horray!! so I started my new job today at a 'Professional' Photography store. It's a little more high class then what I expected it to be. So I suppose my ripped pants just won't do oh! and they also call for 'single coloured shoes' ... whatever that means... I guess they mean no funky ones... and uh... I honestly own like 40+ pairs of sneakers and not one of them are 'high class'... grr.... i guess we all know where my first pay check is going. >.> (not cool).
Anyways... I seem to have enjoyed it.

That's all.

Okey doke... So concidering this is an art site... and that you (yes you) get to view the artists' work in their Gallery, I'm entirely devoted to getting to know the artist themselves. Screw the art - it means absolutely nothing if you don't emotionally know the artist. Sure you can "understand" or "get the idea" of the art but you can't fully understand the art in such great depth as to completely feel and enjoy the piece of work to the extent it has to offer.
Anyways... my intentions were to make a journal entry entirely about me... Problem is I would be here for days. Call me conceited if you will, i call it love for ones self.
So if you're curious and nosey (like myself) ask away. One thing's for sure I'm brutaly honest and quite open about myself to others... don't ask questions you don't wanna know the answer to.

So long for now
