Also, I'm leaving college for end of semester on Tuesday. Hopefully it'll mean that I'm freed up to produce work I actually like rather than the shit I pumped out for a grade.

Its been a while since I've updated this journal, so I suppose I'd better take the time out to do so now. Well I've graduated from high school, with minor incidents which won't be repeated on this site here and there. I'm going to attend New Paltz as I stated in my last journal, and I'm going to major in Graphic Design. Orientation is next week (22-24th) So if your going to New Paltz, and that orientation session, I'll be there. As I'm going to college I'm going to need a new computer, so I'm going to be getting a Macbook Pro, the first mac I've owned since the second grade, and with it Design Premium CS3, which includes photoshop, illustrator, flash, indesign, dreamweaver, Acrobat Pro, and fireworks. This is important as it marks an important milestone, I'll finally be able to try my hand at webdesign, and hopefully create designs better than the mockups that are currently loose in the gallery. I've also gotten Lightwave 3D, but don't look for anything from there, I still really haven't gotten a handle of it. Then again, it was months after I got illustrator I actually started to mess around with it and do something productive with it, so I guess we'll see. Still on hold is Wacom's 12" Cintiq, which I really wish I could afford, but can't. I'll probably end up buying it next year once I've saved up enough cash, and enough courage to blow 1000 bucks on a touch screen monitor. Till then my trusty Intous 4x3 will do me fine. The Welcome to St. Kitts series is up, culminating my journey through the island. It was the first time I've used IR in any productive manner, so I really need critique on IR shots. I've decided to revert back to the old logo for now, though my personal logo (the one based on the symbol &#12480 is still in play. I'll be reevaluating the d-studios logo, so look for an update on that one some time soon.

Sorry for not keeping this updated, but I'm going to New Paltz for college now, entering as a freshman in the fall. A few other things, one of my designs was used as a school t-shirt, unfortunatly, that design hasn't been uploaded on the website, I'll probably upload it soon, as I have all of the designs arranged for that portfolio I made for New Paltz. There is also another logo thats completed. As per why the submissions have been slow lately, most of my artistic work has been building up my traditional art skills, so when I wasn't practicing for the AP, I've been working in my sketchbook. That said, I haven't really taken my camera out for a while, which is a shame since I just got that tripod. Anyway, I have the weekend free, so if the weather doesn't treat me too bad (its supposed to rain tomorrow) I'll probably do something over the weekend. Particularly, I'm still trying to get a working IR shot. Most I've taken have been too shaky (reason why I bought the new tripod) or the burn left an odd blue center/ I'm not getting enough color variation to make a good convert in photoshop, not to mention I took a hiatus from that since I needed the plants to blossom. Now they have, so I could probably get something done.

Well, its been awhile. I'm still working with Habitat for Humanity and haven't really had much time to expand upon my work, which is bad because I have portfolios to send out.

Anyway, to make up for lost time I'll have a bunch of new deviations up tomorrow (I would put them up tonight, but its late, I have to wake up early and honestly there might be more for the dump) which are pretty much photomanips as I haven't had the time for my photography due to the time spent at Habitat. With this dump I've introduced two new logos, which I've already posted. The d-studios logo which replaces the one that I've been using for the past couple months, and my artist logo which pretty much is a revival of my former signature.

Anyway, college tours are coming up for my accepted schools. Up first University at Buffalo, followed by New Paltz and Oswego. Buffalo is probably going to be the biggest pain, since its like 7-8 hours away from NYC 1 way. That said, rented car FTW! Still, I still have to send out my portfolios for New Paltz and Oswego. Oswego offered my a $5,000 scholarship, but my number one is still University at Buffalo. My parents favor New Paltz, but I don't really want to be trapped in a small school again.

This is on top of my graphic design duties for the school yearbook. I think the problem with the yearbook is that I don't get much input as per what the book looks like, and its pretty much become the polar opposite of what I imagined it to be. Now its a forced architecture theme for a school that no longer has an architecture theme (Ironic because the school's title is Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design)
Still waiting for my college acceptances. God, how long does it take? Some of my friends have already been accepted to there schools, but I'm hearing the average is February for acceptance for many of the schools I applied to. Oh well, have to wait till then.

I don't know why I haven't written about this yet, but I got an IR filter form my Fujifilm Finepix s6000fd. The camera is very IR sensitive (Yay fujifilm!) so the filter functions as it would on any other camera. Actually, I got the filter a few weeks ago. So why aren't there any new deviations of me using it? Well theres a few reasons as per why.

I'm busy
I'm currently working with Habitat for Humanity, I did that this past Saturday and I'm going to be doing it again next Saturday. I was actually signed up (without my permission) to do it every weekend this month, but honestly I can't deal with that, there are finals to study for, not to mention wrapping everything up for college.

I just learned how to adjust my white balance
Seriously, I couldn't figure out how I was supposed to set my white balance on my camera (custom, not the presets) which means that I wasn't able to take good IR shots, since the post process would just make the entire picture blue, as opposed to the IR shots that you can see floating around DA and other sites

Its f**king cold
A few days ago it was like 10 degrees here in NYC. I could barely tolerate being outside much less staying outside to take pictures. The weather has gotten nicer, but thanks to my habitat commitment, I probably won't be able to play with my new toy for another two weeks, when its regents week and I don't have to go to school.

Heroes season 2 sucks. A fact that even Tim Kring (creator of heroes) admits (went on a rant about just how much heroes season 2 sucks). I mean really, I've never been so disappointed in a show. I left 24 for Heroes in its first season. That's when the show was the best, everyone had a purpose, main characters could actually die and we actually knew what the hell the point was (Season 1's point was to prevent a nuclear bomb from going off on NYC). Then season 2 shows up. Characters no one likes (IE, not Hiro, Peter or Sylar) decided to take up the most space in the season's new episodes, including two new characters Maya and Alejandro. So far, Maya's only contribution to the show is becoming Sylar's bitch, Alejandro's contribution has been dying. Nathan never shows up, even though he is apparently important to the show, same goes for Matt, who showed up a lot in the beginning of the season, but suddenly disappears when he gets control of his mental manipulation powers. Adam Monroe (kensei) shows up all the time, but NO ONE EVER REALIZES THAT HE IS EVIL, CAUSING THERE TO BE NO DEFINITIVE ISSUE FOR THE PLOT TO DELVE INTO, BREAKING THE OVERALL STORY. Hell, in a season of 11, we don't find out till episode 10 what the hell he wants to do, and thus why he is evil. Probably what was the coolest part of season 1 was the characters storylines slowly intersecting and eventually merging into one. Thats not happening though this season. Everyone is in different places in the countries. No one knows about the incoming evil except for Hiro and Peter, but peter isn't going to do shit to stop it, since he's helping the bad guy, though I bet he's going to act all stupid, try to stop him, and then cliffhanger to the indefinitely pushed back season 3 (which thanks to the writers strike, probably won't happen till 2009). So here we are, the final episode of the season comes on next week, and really, there would have to be a miracle for the season finally to actually be good, as everything was so rushed and then changed because of the strike.

Huge scare today. My computer froze up thanks to photoshop (for some reason, this one picture keeps freezing up photoshop when I save it.) and I had to turn it off manually, by holding down the power button. So it turned off and automatically restarted. As I wanted it to stay off, I pushed the power button again. Finally the computer was off.

So I come back to the computer, it turns on, and in about a second, it turns off. WTF? So I turn it on again. It again turns itself off. On. Off. On. Off. At this point, I'm freaking out. All my files are on this computer, and it is the work horse of my art (I have photoshop, illustrator, blender, sketchup, bryce and a music program on that computer) So I unplug everything, take it to my work area, and open it up. Nothing is broken. So I plug the computer back in, with the computer still opened up to do a visual diagnostics. Well everything is fine, and then, poof, Its off. Nothing is wrong, but I did find the problem. Its the fucking starter. The starter for whatever reason was jammed causing the computer to turn on and off on its own. Magically the starter had fixed itself (at least temporarily) causing me to be able to use the computer fine again. Its a good thing too, because that computer is about 4 years old. If the motherboard had broken, then I would have to kiss the thing good by, as there is no way I'm going to replace damn near everything on the motherboard just so I could get to my files.

On a side note, I've managed to complete Welcome to the NHK (not the manga, or the anime, but the actual book) And its pretty good. I would recommend the book to anyone, and as you read it you could probably relate the characters, and if you can't then you know someone who is similar to a character in the book.

OK, there are some weeaboos (wanna be Japanese) that claim a love for green tea. I don't know how you guys do it. The stuff is bitter. Still they claim that the greatest of green teas are the kind prepared in a Japanese tea ceremony. Well I don't know what the hell you guys are smoking because Japanese tea ceremony green tea is the most bitter thing I ever tasted. Never before have I lost control of the muscles in my body at such a terrible taste. Its mixed in with some kind of additive thats increases the tea's antioxidants making it more healthy. I guess for health you have to make those kinds of sacrifices, but honestly I would rather die at an average age eating tasty foods rather than live to be 120 provided I chug down on some tea ceremony tea once or twice a month.
I guess not enough people know that though, since apparently they're producing some product in America (backed by Oprah by the way) which condenses Japanese Tea Ceremony tea into tea baggies. I guess if you want to try this concoction for yourself, you could probably find it in your local target or something. I won't tell you the name (to save you) but I guess you can probably do a google search to find it out.

So we were in Hiroshima, and where back in the hotel. I don't know the specific hotel, but I think it was a grand prince hotel, one with a marina in the back of it. The typhoon was passing through and we were supposed to take a boat in the morning to some shrine on an Island. But this story isn't about that, rather it occured in the hotel's gameroom.
In the gameroom, the hotel had a bowling ally, nothing big really, just like 16 lanes or so split into two sections. The delegation (which is admittedly filled with a bunch of weeaboos) starts to think its a good idea to play some bowling. Fine, but heres a thing you have to remember about American teenagers, they are loud as fuck. Seriously, I think that not even a nuclear bomb would be able to shut these guys up, their howls would literally be imprinted on the ground that they stand and would be endlessly leak from the earth.
So they're bowling, and they have half of the lanes blocked up. Interested in where all the noise is coming from, a bunch of Japanese occupants came to the bowling ally to find the Americans bowling with passion they haven't seen before (not for the game, but really, just a somewhat party like atomsphere) which inspires them to buy out the rest of the bowling lanes. And so, I was treated to a side by side comparison of American bowling and Japanese bowling.
Now, on the left side was the Japanese bowlers, and they were boring as hell to watch. They all walked in wearing the average Japanese monocolor attire (black and white) and sort of entered the seats single file. They quietly imputed their data into the computers. And one by one they would bowl. When someone got a good shot or a strike, a round of golf claps would come from the other players with the bowler who threw the good throw giving a microbow. The bowler would then take his/her seat, and the next bower stood up. This is how it went until some of the Japanese players gave a bit more energy after experiencing playing on the opposite side of the Americans who would outnoise them at all times. Still, the Japanese bowlers were surprisingly good. I though that they were on a team for a school or something, but then why is it that they're wearing suits then?
Meanwhile the Americans sucked ass bowling, but they seemed to have more fun. A gutter ball would result in jeers from the other players and the bowler saying "Hey, shut up!" and a strike would result in a bit of a touch down dance and the other bowlers going 'oh you just got lucky!' Side conversations would take place, and although I did see some of the worst bowling scores I ever saw in my life there, we were having fun.
That is of course until Genero broke the bowling lane he was playing on. Let me tell you something about Genero. He breaks things. Its not for fun even, he just magically breaks things. I don't know why, I don't know how, but if its broken, you can probably blame Genero. The staff of the bowling lanes, were previously watching us Americans with a 'man, thats pretty cool' but now gazed upon Genero, and the black guy who helped break the lane (I forgot his name) with a big 'WTF is wrong with you?' Long story short, were were blocked from bowling again and Genero had to pay the hotel the price of repairing the bowling lane. I don't know how much they had to pay, but I do know that it was bullshit since the only thing that needed to be done on it was the pop the stopper piece back into place.

Well, I'm back in America now. I've been back since sunday actually, hence why you saw the Welcome to Japan series come up. I think I'm going to focus more on NYC photography though since I've gone through most of the good shots from my time in Japan. The pictures in the Notice were not taken in Japan however, rather they were taken back at home. The Sake Vase and glasses are souvenirs of mine and I also have some chopsticks (6 actually) though I think the most frustrating thing about Japanese chopsticks is that they are round, as oppose to Chinese chopsticks which are flat. That said, picking up food is easier with the Chinese chopsticks, where as the Japanese chopsticks gain more usage, like the ability to use them as a knife in softer foods. Funny thing is, I've become pretty well handled with chopsticks, and for some foods I would actually prefer them over western utensils.

I was actually never sick in Japan, however as soon as I got back into America I became sick. Wondering what kind of curse America must have, I thought back to the flight returning to NYC. I then realized that I caught some sickness from a guy flying to Sao Paulo, Brazil. So yeah, I'm sick, though I think its dying down.
