What is a “minion”?
A minion is one of the dA Zine volunteers. Words like “staff” and “volunteer” are just too dull for us, so we call them minions instead! We think it’s fun, and that’s all that matters!


Columnist
number of positions: Four (Digital, Traditional, Photo, Lit.)
number of open positions: One (traditional)
Each columnist will be in charge of providing the article for their section in each issue. These columns should provide insight into the world of the category they are covering and be 500-1200 words long. For example, a Traditional Art Columnist would write about all aspects of traditional art over the course of their term with dA Zine, including drawing, painting, sculpture, artisan crafts, street and body art, and mixed media. This can be done with how-to articles, interviews with successful or prominent artists, theoretical musings, or any other means you can come up with! Also, you do not have to be an expert in every aspect of a category to write about it! An interest and a willing to research and learn is all you need. Time commitment for a columnist depends on your writing style and what type of article you choose to write. You could spend 3-4 hours on a short how-to on a medium you’re familiar with to dozens of hours researching and developing an article on something you are not as familiar with.


Scout

The heart of dA Zine is our features, and behind those features are our scouts. Scouts are responsible for finding two artists within their category to feature in each issue and then writing a brief introductory paragraph for each one. They will need to be willing to feature a variety of styles, mediums, genres, and subjects within and between issues. Time commitment for our scouts tends to be small: usually they find their features while browsing DeviantART as they usually do, and writing up the introductions take 1-2 hours at the most, depending on writing styles. This tends to be the least time consuming position, as well as one of our most important.


Editor

All of our content goes through the editors at least once before it gets to print. Our editors are responsible for editing for grammar, flow, and to some extent, content according to American English standards. They give feedback to the original authors as to ways to improve current and future articles. The time commitment depends on personal working style, but most of our editors have been able to do an issue’s worth of editing in one night.


Critic
number of positions: Two
number of open positions: none
Each issue we secure permission to have a deviation thoroughly critiqued by our herd’o’critics. Our critics are responsible for providing an in-depth critique of that piece, delving into what works and doesn’t work about the piece as well as offering advice for improving it and future pieces. Time commitment for critics averages approximately 2-4 hours per issue, depending on writing style.


Interviewer

Our interviewer is in charge of securing an interview for each issue. This can either be with our Spotlight Artist or with a prominent member of the DeviantART community. Time commitment varies by interviewer, ranging from a couple hours to several dozen.

We're moving along on the production of Issue 9 and are on par to actually hit our deadline. However, we need your help.

With school and universities starting up now and in the coming month, several of our minions have found that they will not have the time to continue their posts. That means we have several positions open that we need to fill ASAP.

Take a gander at our Staff List to see what positions are open that you might be interested in filling. Currently we have three scout positions and a columnist position that need filled ASAP.
