It's an OCT (Original Character Tournament for anyone not in the know), but with a slight twist--it's not a battle tournament, not in the usual sense...

Princess Zandria's nineteenth birthday is coming up fast, and she must be married as soon as possible! She has rejected every possible match in her own nation, so foreigners from all different countries and worlds are being requested to attend the royal events! Instead of fighting each other, though, the suitor must try to worm his or her way into the princess's heart, whether through impressive skills, romance, wit, or mudslinging the other suitors. Writers as well as artists are accepted!

My birthday is in a week! September 23rd, whoo! I am excited. I'm going to a concert this weekend and a musical the next... Gonna be pretty awesome. Too bad the equinox isn't on my birthday this year though, haha.
Umm, I started school a week ago...it has been a topsy-turvy week. I've had my schedule changed in some way twice (I don't have lunch three times a week now... ) but so far it hasn't been that bad...we'll see if it gets worse.
I am a semifinalist for a scholarship! Wish me luck in getting it!

Hope y'all are keeping up with my webcomic


Uhh so...it's August 2nd, huh. July was not too great so I am glad to have moved on. There were good things--a writing workshop, starting camp (where for some reason I am hanging out mostly with boys XD), hanging out with ~Druid-Ulises on Friday (which was fun even though we got rained on xD)--but there were a few pretty bad things, namely my cat getting put down. There's been other crap but nothing really as bad as that, but I don't want to go into it.
So...July was so-so. Here's hoping August is better. I'll be going down South in a few weeks, which will be nice; I didn't get to go in July because of a slightly long story.

I don't think I've been too well physically; I've been tired a lot more and have lost some of my appetite. Dunno what's going on with that, but hopefully it doesn't last (although a smaller appetite isn't a bad thing, really).

Anyway, I have a new nib pen and that came with ink, so hopefully there will be more of that from me. And more writing because of the workshop. But I have to start college applications (fuuuuck) and summer assignments (triple fuck) so we'll see. xP

I am very proud of myself and hope that colleges will appreciate my score. There is no way in hell I am retaking it now.
The other three people in my tutoring class did really awesome too, we all cracked 2000 so our tutor will, I'm sure, cry tears of joy, though not necessarily literally. (I miss him. He was freakin' AMAZING.)
Angie didn't get her score because the dudes over at CollegeBoard were all like "naw son you good for seven to ten more days" so we are all very sad for her.
School's not out yet wtf. They won't even turn on the damn AC. First they were all "May 15th!" and May 15th has come and gone and NOW they're all like "May 28th! Or 30th!" and everyone is dying from heat. We have four fans in my math class and everyone fights over them. It ain't pretty.

Oh! And I totally met , , , and yesterday. I was only with Kaycee and Carly for like ten or fifteen minutes but Shell and Jolyn and I got to know concrete very intimately. I was so tired when I got home, I ended up crashing at like ten and so did not do my Spanish homework. Oy vey.
It was fun though and I am looking forward to Saturday yay.

Have you ever had a problem where, when you hit, say, Y=, and then go to, say, Mode, the Y= stuff remains on the screen in any blank places? And it's the same with all other pages? If so, how did you fix it?
I really really don't want to reboot my calculator. I already tried replacing the batteries--didn't help, but thankfully didn't delete my programs, which rebooting the calculator will do. And I cannot lose these programs. I don't have a cord to connect my calculator to the computer to re-download them, and I am taking the SAT tomorrow. I am screwed for the SAT if I lose these programs. My math score will suffer. Big time. I can't do any math as it is right now, with the screen behaving the way it is.

So, um, yeah. I've googled it but nothing's come up, even in the troubleshooting guide. Help would be amazing to the nth power.

I guess that's what I get for buying it from my math teacher. :/

I got like four books today (Midnighters 2 is finally mine) and new headphones, so I definitely won't be bored. I am so glad to finally have headphones of my own; I broke my old ones during February break... D:

Nothing too new. I saw Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard last night and I highly recommend it. It was really good (though not as good as the Scottish Play with Patrick Stewart, haha).

Anyone heard of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards? I won a Silver Key for Emeraldine! I'm pretty happy, especially considering it didn't win in the original contest I wrote it for, and also considering I haven't touched it since I wrote it.

LA and Portland were pretty cool; California is surprisingly civilized Portland was especially amazing. See, it has Powell's Books, which I am now certain is America's best bookstore--maybe the world. What else can you say about a store that takes up a full city block, has four floors of books, a special shelf for train hoboes, and tons of out-of-print old World of Darkness books? I got five Werewolf books there, all discounted, of course, off the original price. I'm pleased. x]

I finished my Valentine's Day story finally.

Also, I need a job. Gots to earn money for my GCCTT (or GATT; still not sure which title is better). Then I need to buy a big map of the country...

My friend Cindy and I are going to start working on a song; I messaged her some random lines from my phone notes and my index cards (I keep records of all my random thoughts on my phone and on a stack of index cards*). It should be fun! I'll probably post the lyrics once we're done with it, and then we'd just have to write the music...which is going to be hard. Joy. Our goal is to be done with it all by the end of March.
* these get fairly complicated because I come up with endless variations on my own thoughts. Writing them down involves a lot of slashes and brackets.

I'm writing a story for Valentine's Day because I am too lazy to do art. It is, naturally, about Mila and Brendan. If I can get one in about Amanda and Juliet, I'll do that too.
On the writing front, I transferred out of digital photography to creative writing (electives). I love the photography teacher and the subject, but I was alone with a lot of people I can't stand. At least I'll actually write stuff fairly regularly this way!

It's been wonderfully warm this last week, but apparently it's going to be ridiculously cold on Saturday. Sure am glad I'm getting out of here

I am officially out of money thanks to White Wolf being assholes and making you buy an extra book to do anything with the new World of Darkness. Damn it. At least I'll be able to make characters now.

Uh, what else... A local college offers classes for college credits, and I'm taking the political science one. It's actually really interesting! Not much of the reading has been easy, but I'm enjoying the class itself.

I do not have a valentine. A few weeks ago, one of my friends asked me out basically for Valentine's Day (didn't say it outright, but it was implied) but since I'm going to be away...yeah. Still no date for a date set.

I've gotten some pretty cool stuff for Hanukkah and Christmas (yes, I celebrate both; yes, I'm probably pretty spoiled). I got a book called Spooky South, another called When Brer Rabbit Meets Coyote (I think), a Nintendo DS (!!), Norah Jones and Peter Malick's New York City, Michael Buble's Call Me Irresponsible, a mix CD from my dad, a hoodie, volumes 1 and 2 of Sandman, money, a calendar of Greek islands, candy and gum, and a gift card and mad coupons to Claire's (I'm getting my ears re-pierced soon).

I'm working on presents for various people on here but they won't be up today. I'll try to get them all done before 2009 though!

She's also busy this school year, too busy to have time to draw pages for FCH.

We've decided to continue From Childhood's Hour starting next summer, probably sometime in June, and finish out the planned 50-odd pages on a M-W-F schedule. The comic will end after that, and, probably, so will Brena's story. (We'd had an idea of doing another comic set a few years later, but that is almost definitely not going to happen. Oh well.)



I still kind of want to write another comic in the meantime, though... xD

I did end up going trick-or-treating last night, with a different friend, and nothing happened to me. I'm pretty sure the whole gang thing was either blown out of proportion or completely untrue, and people only really had to worry if they were in bad neighborhoods. Honestly, murders and violence happen all the time; Halloween shouldn't be the only time people are careful about it--but getting so scared that you stay home and don't leave the house*, especially when there are no legit sources for this? A little ridiculous. I can understand wanting to be safe, but then there's just letting fear completely get you. If I'd heard about heightened danger last night from a legitimate source like the local news channel, the radio, or the police, yes, I probably would have stayed home. But when I'm only hearing it word-of-mouth from people who aren't gang members, and no one online seems to agree on it? Yeah, no.
There weren't even any confirmations of the supposed murders. Sounds like a false rumor to me.


* Unless you live in a bad neighborhood in the first place, in which you should be especially careful at night in general. So it's definitely understandable then.

I actually wore my costume to school this year and I liked it. Non-skanky Little Red Riding Hood costumes FTW. I got a basket and I bought marshmallow pumpkins at lunch and gave them out. My pre-calc teacher took like five, haha.
Angela was a wonderful Tinker Bell, Chelsea was Sarah Palin, Lucy was a Tang Dynasty courtier (I believe), and one of the girls in my Spanish class was Amy Winehouse.

I was supposed to trick-or-treat with Mary, Mana, Kaitlin, and Sarah, but that's not happening because people are freaking over a rumored Blood initiation* and Kaitlin cancelled it. :/ I'm not happy. First Halloween since I was seven that I won't be trick-or-treating, unless I can find someone who wants to brave the oh-so-dangerous Neighborhood In Question with me. Mmph. Doubt that's happening.
Fucking gangs and fucking rumors and fucking people blowing shit out of proportion. We were going to a very gentrified neighborhood; I highly doubt we would have been in any danger.

Maybe I'll ask Chelsea if she's open to having a tag-along. I don't know...
I guess I'm just upset. I have a proper costume this year and it would have been awesome to go out and trick-or-treat in it. I didn't buy that basket to hold giveaway candy at school in, after all.
Not to mention, Halloween is a FRIDAY this year. Friday! I could have been out late getting candy instead of going home early and worrying about doing homework! Dx

Oh well. My day was good anyway. I shouldn't be so upset--a lot of people would say I'm too old for trick-or-treating--but I am anyway. Ughh.

Halloween is coming up. Three guesses what I'm going to be.

South Carolina was way cool, we stayed on an island and went to Fort Sumter (Civil War sites are AWESOME) and I took photos at the beach and saw dolphins and good times, you know?
I missed photography class, which sucks, but Sunday's should be good. I didn't realize how much I missed Matt and Josh until the first one; it was so nice to see them again and I didn't want a friggin' two week break between seeing them. Oh well.

Still a little sick of the election but we're doing a mock election in APUSH and I'm on the McCain campaign* so I have to actually make ads and shit. At least we're not doing REAL work.

School's been going okay. I'm enjoying the project we're doing in art and I'll take photos of the first one we did sometime and speaking of photos, I still need to figure out how to take photos of the Library of Liberty poster I did (during, like, the first week of school) that I'm really proud of.
We're reading The Scarlet Letter in lit, which is okay and good, I just wish I had the vocabulary of a colonial New Englander.

I have mad money from birthday, allowance, and babysitting, and somehow I've managed not to spend it yet. I know what I want, though, so it should be aaaall gone soon...heh.


* I am not a Republican and, if I were able to vote in the upcoming election, I would not vote for McCain. I am on the McCain campaign by choice, though, because I figured it would be better than the teacher making us switch from Obama to McCain (my class is overwhelmingly Democrat), and one of my friends does support him and is on that campaign, so I figured I'd keep her company. And I really don't mind McCain much. I just don't support him for president.
Plus, I'd love to try and make Sarah Palin look good. *eyeroll*

I'm still not sure which. I might try it as both--write a webcomic and also write it as a book during NaNoWriMo or something.
Not to mention I still have to work on a plot for a Sanuye & Andrew graphic novel, finish some I Ms (text for Mila's and art and text for several others), draw a map of Stormfall, see if Mary and I can work out a schedule for From Childhood's Hour, and reply to at least three roleplays that generally require longish replies. Ay.

I have the most inspiration for this new project, though, so I think I'll work on that for now. I guess.


Just a note: I'm going away this weekend--flying down to South Carolina tomorrow after school and coming back Monday evening. I'm definitely going to bring my camera so I can take photos--sort of comfort for not having photography class on Sunday because of this (I started it last week and I realized how much I've missed Matt and Josh, even if they tease me all the time) and missing Jason Mraz's concert. I really wanted to go to that concert too. Oh well.

Today the Holocaust group presented.

One of the boys' topic was 'art and literature', and he mentions a few famous survivors who have gone on to be authors or artists: Primo Levi, Art Spiegelman, and Anne Frank (issue #1: Anne Frank died in a concentration camp; she didn't survive the Holocaust, but this was probably just bad wording on his part). Next to Art Spiegelman's name, it's noted that he has won the Pulitzer Prize.

For those of you who don't know why Spiegelman won a Pulitzer, he is the creator of the graphic novel Maus: A Survivor's Tale. This is a graphic novel about the Holocaust, specifically about Speigelman's father's experience. It is not intended for children; it is most definitely a graphic novel for adults.

This guy mentions Maus as a work of art about the Holocaust and says that it is intended for kids a bit younger than us. In other words, I am almost certain he just meant kids--children.

I'm pretty sure he did not read Maus or, for that matter, do much research about it beyond finding out the name, subject matter, and that it depicts characters as animals ('rats or mice', according to him--incorrect; Jews are depicted as mice, hence the title). I think that he just assumed that Maus was intended for kids because it is a graphic novel--a comic book, basically. The general view of comics in American culture is that they're for kids, which is mostly incorrect, but there you have it.

I did resist telling him that Maus is intended for adults, not kids, because sometimes I actually have decent impulse control.

It just really, really pissed me off. I know it's a dumb thing to get annoyed about, but I was. I get annoyed by people assuming that comics are for kids no matter what, even if the subject matter is something that kids probably will not fully understand (ie Maus).

And when the graphic novel in question has won a freaking Pulitzer Prize...yeah, that's generally a sign that it ain't for kids (assuming the person knows what that award is).

I got Courtney Crumrin and the Coven of Mystics, The Good Neighbors: Kin, a journal, Definitely, Maybe, The Book of Fabulous Questions, Little Red Riding Hood Uncloaked: Sex, Morality, and the Evolution of a Fairy Tale, and a tablet!
I'm especially happy about the Little Red book and the tablet. (The book is so interesting and awesome, and the tablet means I can finally do all those memes everybody loves, haha. Plus digital art, but I probably won't do much of that.)
And on Friday Mary is giving me Photoshop, and I'll probably get some stuff from my friends on Sunday, so life is good and materialistic.
I also got an Amazon gift certificate and a check, which I'll probably spend on CDs or the rpg books I wanted.


Life is going well, except for my physics test. That we will not discuss.
Oh! And the first weekend in October, I start another photography class! With Matt and Josh! And maybe Staver. I'm looking forward to it sooo much. I miss everybody.

We went to Kingston and Montréal (to look at colleges, of course) and I really liked both cities. We went on a haunted walk in Kingston that was cool, for one, and I went on tours of Queen's and McGill. Nice schools.
I also did my lit reading while there and read Cat's Cradle, Ballad of the Sad Café, and Seize the Day. The third was all right, the second was good, and I LOVED the first.

School is starting on Tuesday. I am not looking forward to anything but seeing my friends and doing a CD swap with one of said friends. I will be in APUSH this year, how exciting--not. I like history but I do not like doing work.

Umm...also John McCain is something of a genius for picking Sarah Palin as his vice president (running mate, whichever).
And I am disappointed with how things have changed since the days of George Washington as president (oh yes, I also had to read books about the founding fathers and the Constitution for APUSH, a wise move during an election year). I like the idea of the president being unaffiliated with a party; I wish that was still the case. Also, I am sick of the election.

And the art...man, that is so good, and I was just basically blown away by it. Great writing, great art, great plot--great graphic novel. I mean, it made TIME's 100 best novels list--and was the only graphic novel on it. Go Watchmen!

I have seen the trailer for the 2009 movie (it was one of the previews shown before The Dark Knight) and I think it is incredible. The trailer indicates that the movie will do justice to the graphic novel (except with Ozymandias's costume, haha) and it looks like it's gonna be pretty damn good.
Oh, and whoever made the trailer picked the perfect music for it.

So I've shared my thoughts. What are yours? Have you read Watchmen? Did you like it? Did you hate it? Have you seen the movie trailer? Are you looking forward to it, or do you think that Snyder will screw it up?
And, you know, whatever other thoughts you might have on either the graphic novel or the movie, or both.

1) leaving Saturday for a week at the beach with no internet. Should be good times (no, I'm not being sarcastic).

2) New pages of From Childhood's Hour up! Our updating schedule is ridiculously sporadic; please bear with us. Also, it'd be nice if you could comment, or, if you like the comic and have a Smackjeeves account, fav FCH.

3) WALL-E was amazing. If it's still in theaters and you haven't seen it, go see it.

4) The Sega Genesis system is really, really fun.

5) I sort of learned how to play tennis yesterday! Go me, I can hit a tennis ball. Playing softball for a few years probably helped.

6) Typing eight pages of handwritten comic is really, really annoying and tedious, even if it was kinda fun to write at first. *headdesk*

My friend M. and I have started a webcomic! M. is illustrating it and I am writing it.
The name is "From Childhood's Hour" and it is basically about a girl, Brena, and her dreams.

It was supposed to begin updating on Monday (23rd) but there were unforeseen setbacks, and the cover and first three pages went up last night. There will be no updates next week, but the Monday after (July 7th), there will be eight pages--seven make-up pages and Monday's page. After that, the comic should follow a Mon-Fri schedule if we're lucky and nothing goes wrong. *knocks on wood*

(Some of you may recognize the name Brena. The main character and her family are actually characters from one of my short stories, "Candlelight" ([link] ).
...they've probably moved or something since the time of that story. xD)

Please, read, and also comment if you so desire! If you'd rather get into it when the updates will be regular, bookmark it and come back on July 7th, and I will also post a journal about it that day.
