this happened a few years ago

It was a pretty straightforward and ordinary- day I was facing a deadline for uni, but didn't want to do it, I'm something of a master at procrastination like that. My mom was going to visit her mom, something I would usually not be a part of, but having already washed my dustbin and cleaned the lint out of my entire wardrobe. My stalling duped me into offering to go with.

my mom and I are pretty much best friends, so we were having a good day of it.

as we turned into the hospital I remember steeling myself, I hadn't seen Nanny in a while, not since the last time she was in remission, and I was a little wary as to what to expect. my Mom picked up on this while we were in the elevator. "She's thin" she whispered. " I know" I said, it wasn't true, I didn't know, I was just trying to be stronger before we got there, she grinned at me; I added my anger to my strength.

"she's in room 406" she said as we walked down the passage, not that it made any difference since I was not exactly walking ahead of her.

Some truths are universal. one of those is that no matter how old you are you can't shake the impression that your mother can shield you from anything, and will most likely prefer her to be between you and room 406.

turned the corner, into the room. I remember being surprized by the colour of the room, it was a purple-red, not at all what a hospital room should look like. She looked up, quicker than a person in her condition should have. she smiled widely, her eyes sparkling, looking healthier than a person in that bed should have. The fact that she was much thinner than she should have been was a straggler in the race of information reaching me.

She put down the book she'd been focusing on on the bedside table and held out her arms for a hug as she said hi. it was great day, we talked about cricket and family and school and friends and generally caught up on the last few months, the book was a very tricky book of sudoku, one of those trickier letterreplacementfindawordafterdecodinga ndextramath ones. we worked on a puzzle together. amongst the memories I have of that day, one stands out in particular.

During a quite point in our conversation, my nan looked at me and said " I don't think I have much longer here, and I have something I need to tell you." I looked at her and nodded, I knew what she meant." I want you to make a point of never living in regret" it took me an instant to realize what she was saying " be sure you make decision which are true to yourself, since you're the one who has to live with them afterwards. More than the people around you, more than the people you love, especially the people you love." I smiled at her, nodded, and said "ok." the surrealty of the conversation was keeping me from really understanding it, but I knew I'd get it soon enough

...

I don't believe in resolutions, I feel in a sort of Dr. Phil kind of approach that life is determined more by momentary decisions at critical points than the frustration of calendar points. but I do believe in checking up on my decisions periodically.

and if I look back on this year, I'm impressed, impressed by my growth my decisions and the way I dealt with stuff, it was far from and easy one.way way way far from easy, a lot of it was an emotional rollercoaster of note, it shows in the amount of art I've produced this year.

but yeah, no regrets here

~D

Don't forget: next kiriban is at 12,345!

Dear sweet, innocent Girlchild

I’m saddened that we didn’t really get a chance to be friends; I remember imagining it would be so one day, that we’d travel together, see the world and paint each other’s nails.

I really feel that you are better off now, I’m so happy for you. The sheer amount of anguish you went through here, nobody should ever have to endure, it was not by consequence of your action.

I’m relieved that you’re no longer here, and the amount of guilt that that brings is unbearable.

I thank God for the time we did have, I feel as though I’m a much better and stronger person than I was before, and although I would hate to reduce it to such an egotistical an end as that, feel that you and the ordeal that was our relationship, may have served in an integral role in shaping the person I’m becoming.

Thank you

Goodbye Micaela, Rest In Peace
Your Big Sister

seriously.

I'll be ok though. If anything I've done my bit for raising the national immunity level. yay?

for those of you who have not yet done your homework:

The medical fraternity of south Africa reckons that the national infection/immunity rate is around 30% -40% already, despite the WHO having under 2000 confirmed cases, it feels and acts like normal flu and you can treat/avoid it the same way. The difference is that if you get it, it will probably affect you harder than a normal flu since the antibodies are a bit different and you should watch out for a persistent headache combined with fever to know if you actually in mortal danger.

personally I recommend catching it as soon as possible before it mutates or some other rubbish, lol. The vaccine/remedy called Tamiflu, which is all they have for it, is nearly ineffective and all 5 strains of the virus found in SA have already shown resistence to it.

Telkom is finally no longer on strike, or at least they've started answering the phones again. Maybe we can get service, maybe I could even get a phone line and a connection soon, maybe after that we get to find out why they stole over R3000 maybe even get some back. I'm not hopeful on that last point

Crazy

So I'm taking this year and turning it into a stage play, or a movie (depending on the rights) It's turning into a sort of make or break on the freelance thing and it's going to be tough, but worth it if it goes as I see it now, worth it either way.

I just realized this is only half an update...so much to tell you...
aah well, it would be an overload in any case, so expect another one soon

     *chuckles again at the title*

Myself and Art

I have theory that every illustrator goes through valleys and peaks when it comes to how they perceive their own skill level, we tend to swing between “I can’t draw” and “I can do that(despite never having tried anything in that style)”, usually the downward swing is sparked by either a big scary job that makes you worry more about the piece or by focusing too much on an aspect you struggle with drawingwise, an element of anatomy you’re not completely sure about for example.

something like this:

Notice however if we reverse the graph, as in flip it horizontally, we’d get progressively stupider as we travelled backwards in time.

Movies

If you haven’t yet watched either the incredible hulk or Iron man, seriously, *shakes head* . I loved both of these more than I have a movie in a very long time. Casting, editing, story arcs, sound, animation, character design, there’s nothing that makes me go ‘eh, that wasn’t so good’, to me they’re broth impressive works of the craft beside being awesome comicy movies. As to the question of which between the two…I’d go with the incredible hulk, for 2 reasons, the camera work and editing seemed crisper (timing of impacts etc,) and I’m more of a questing for inner peace than a spend my money flash kind a girl. I'm most definitely becoming a fan of the new marvel studios.

this pixar fangirl is freaking out about wall-e finally being within reach, but that'll get a journal on it's own, soon as I've watched 6 or 7 times

Discovering Sai
Wow, let me introduce you, try it -> [link]
As far digital illustration goes, this has been a process and skill changing discovery.
It’s leaner than anything I’ve worked with (it installs and runs faster than it takes photoshop to open)
It has the blending/real media feel of painter without the clutter of trying to emulate it. Earlier today, my mom offered me some popcorn, and my initial response was “no thanks, I don’t want to put fingermarks on my page”

*warning: geekdom approaches*
I have one other new addition to my toolbox of must haves
My Nintendo DSLite on homebrew steroids. I bought my ds from the UK back in October (yes, now they’re available here, but I couldn’t find a lite here at the time) I’d had it for a week (playing Zelda, phantom hourglass, if anyone cares) when I heard about colors from collectingsmiles.com, it’s a homebrew ‘game’ that turns your ds into a little sketchpad, this is fantastic since the ds screen is pressure sensitive and everything. So while I was in Asia, I picked up the hardware to make it happen. Wow, since then my ds has been a sketchpad, organizer, free voip phone, internet browser, animation desktop, mp3 player and movie player( the screen’s a little too small for subtitles, but works great), I have inspirational images on it to look at when I feel like drawing etc etc etc.(mention the word 'orange' in your comment if you're still reading, heheheh) There are limitations, understandably, it’s not actually a tabletpc apparently, but it’s much much more than a handheld game console now. On top of all that I can play gba roms and downloaded ds games...even before they’re released here. AAAHRR

Speaking of hook handed sea-fiends, and I teamed up for local comic contest, it was a gruelling sleepless weekend combined with more coffee than is healthy to produce 8 pages of concept and teaser in post apocalyptical pirate theme.

<sub>
I have a confession to make-I’m a Super Paper Mario addict. There, I said it, I feel all alone, like nobody understands me. I’m sure that when this game get’s to South Africa I’ll find people like me with a particular soft spot for theflat,i cutesy mustached plumber/carpenter game, I just love the game play dynamics....it's....genrebastardness

Travel Update

Our plans changed kind of radically when we found out that my mom had/has to have intensive physio and ultrasounds for her shoulder injury, so instead of heading off to do our tour in Laos, our stint in Cambodia and the bike trip we were hoping to include, we ended up taking it easy in Malaysia where we became part of the modern global trend known as medi-tourism. Which was kind of a good thing since I was getting kind of exhausted with travelling.

I love being nomadic , it ‘s just sometimes frustrating, I’ve got very little done creatively while travelling.

On Penang (Malaysia)

I love this island, it is without a doubt my home away from home. We were fortunate to have friends who live here going back to SA during this time so instead of needing to stay in a costly hotel, we rented their apartment, a sweet spot nine floors up with nothing between you and the beach except for the pool and palm trees.
The food is flippin’ fantastic in a ‘I just can’t get enough of that’ kind of way, some of it’s really simple and most of it’s really healthy, although there are a fair few fatty dishes too. Means me and the gym have a pact when i get back and get back to some sort of routine.

For those of you who missed it I’m putting travel pics in a photobucket account, so you can find them here:[link]

This solution was devised while I was subless, now thanks to my good Friend *DawidFrederik this is no longer a frustration. *more hugs*

Art update
There’s a bit of a debate going on internally with me at the moment. When I return to SA, I need to either run full tilt into the creative field and market myself like crazy and hope something will catch me or I’m going to need to get a J.O.B thingy, which I’m less keen on and more sure of. Give me your thoughts on this dilemma.

~~
I might be offline for a while, have some patience I'll answer you soon
forgive me,or laugh at me, I'm fast asleep right now, and I'll prolly end up rewriting this one

I’m breaking this journal update into several parts because it’s just far too long for the attention span of net readers and deviants who are trying to clear up their inbox
~~
Travelling

Ok, when I wrote last I was in Ho Chi Minh City, since then we spent a month travelling North through Vietnam. We would land in a town find a couple of motorbikes to hire, drive around and find a place to stash our bags and rest our heads, then spend the next few days exploring the town, seeing the sights and generally get acquainted with the people and food until we get a bus to take us to the next town :

Mui Ne: (just north of Phan Tiet if you look at a map, since it usually doesn’t have its own label) This place is Paradise on Earth. You know the postcards with the white beaches, palm trees? Take that place and add great on-the -each cafes with addictive cuisine, economical kite-surf schools and surprisingly few tourists for how amazing it is.

I’m gonna take up kite surfing properly in the near future, along with my Dad the fanatic and maybe my bro.

Driving In Viet Nam is suicide for anybody who is used to driving in the calm of western cities, more than two thirds of the population drives motorbike scooters, mostly Honda Cubs and nobody ever looks in their rear-view mirror, hooting incessantly is considered a courtesy. Just in February Nam joined the rest of the world in requiring helmets for drivers, this resulted in a boom in the plastics industry and a large amount of wacky helmets. In Phan Tiet we each bought our own souvenir helmets of wacky design.

Nha Trang: is a minicity slammed up against a beach strip, it was in a past time a really great tourist destination but gives me the impression of having lost some of that charm in the bustle

Hoi Anis a bubble of old world Chinese Empirical rule , a ceramic tiled, yellow walled, tailoring chain store.

Hue this place suffers a bit of being a grubby grey dorpie, but it has some interesting ancient architecture scattered throughout it which makes up for it and some riverside cafe charm which, bears a striking resemblance European Coffee haunts.

Vitnamese coffee is something to be cherished by anyone with a taste for it it’s brewed dark and thick drip-style from a little tin system on top of your glass mug, which has an inch of condensed milk at the bottom. When it’s finally done dripping and you stir, it remains the colour of tar NOMNOMNOM

Ha Noi is a big chaotic city, bustling to the brim with insane Honda Cub driving. Dog is on the menu at a fair few corner hawkers, We weren’t here long since we only hada few days left on our Visa’s and figured, impersonating arnie, we’d be back.

Ha Long BayYou know those surreal Sumi E paintings with the cliffs and the mist and junk?

Not junk like junk is stuff I don’t want, but junk like old Chinese boat with the fan type sails. We spent three days exploring the Sumi e landscape, the surreality added to by the cold(about 20/22) weather.

You can see photo's in this photobucket [link]

So far I’m loving this town, it seems to be a mix of underdeveloped asia and over sophisticated Europe jammed into one place. The French influence is obvious here-baguettes, chocolates, mayonnaise and strong coffee, also in the architecture there’s touches of art nouveau and 50’s modernity everywhere.
I went to the war remnants museum yesterday, it used to be called the museum of Chinese and American war crimes and was changed as not to offend Chinese and American tourists, they should have kept the old name, it would be more accurate. If you’re ever going to visit this museum, don’t do it on a full stomach unless you intend to redecorate the floor, some of the photos and displays are quite heavy. American Tourists are still offended by the museum, they call it biased, makes me laugh.

Creating

Art wise things are changing, I'm focusing my energy to more commercial aspects and I'm not sure what that's going to look like yet but I can see a lot of new influences coming into my work. I've also decided that I want to refine the work I post a bit more before submission, watch the gallery for the new developments soon.

other stuffs

To anybody considering getting a wii, do it. especially if you live with your folks, it's a great opportunity to laugh at and with them. also it is the most fun console out there and can be mucked about with in some of the coolest ways. check these out: [link]

we bought a chipped Japanese wii on this side of the world rather recently loads of fun, I got hooked on Trauma Centre and Guilty Gear.
The flight including stopovers was 22 hrs. not much by normal standards but the timing made it really tedious, each of the three flights not quite long enough to sleep properly or the timing of food just really messed up. I usually enjoy flying but not so much this time.

landed in Bangkok just before midnight, Taxi to our hotel on the infamous khaosan road, about 2am and we're checked in and figure it's time to get some chow, 3am sees us at a grubby street cafe eating something unpronouncable.honestly the best food i've eaten in months.

It's the first time I've been on khaosan road. My impression: it's a lively place, a bit touristy in that you do better in french or english than thai, bit of a dodgy place too but I guess it's kind of expected. Back home a dodgy area automatically implies an unsafe area, here it's not the same. All in all, I like

Things that have made me smile:

Two orange-wrap clad buddhist monks discussing the USB compatibility of their mobiles.

My sudden and clingy appreciation for international branding; I like that I know that that drink is a Sprite even though I can't actually read it and that I know what it tastes like because it's the only one in the shop I can say that of. I take the Sprite thank you, although I usually don't like sprite :/

A shop full of man-girls selling tech hardware; got a harddrive case for half what they were originally asking, cos man-girls don't like haggling apparently. Also got some tips on applying eye make-up.ftw
Height:
A word that best describes me:
curious
If you were part of an elite crime-busting team, what special skill would you have?
A wealth of arb knowledge about any situation
If you were part of an elite team of space pirates, what special skill would you have?
I train orcus galactacus exceptionally easily
If you had a superpower, what would it be?
what do you mean IF? I'm telepathic
Describe the perfect weapon.
I'm the sidekick because I'm waiting for my day of glory
Little is known about damouse, she is human and appears to age as normal, she acquired her abilities during her teenage years while she was mysteriously absent from public view. She spends large amounts of her time in quiet contemplation uring which, it is thought, her abilities recharge.

This weekend coming a group of artists and comic fans are getting together to meet, draw, have a drink, talk rubbish and further careers.

Where: Outer Limits Pretoria.
Time: Starting 1pm.
When: Sat 8 Dec 2007.
Extra Info: Bring drawing stuff (paper, pencils, ink, blood, twigs, cheese, kokis, bark, bleach.... and cash for drinks afterwards.

If you are interesting in attending you can note Dawid *DawidFrederik or *forestmoon or just show up. This is our final Jam for the year and the last one I'll be attending for a while, so you prolly don't want to miss it.
-EDIT-

besides this being the smallest jam thus far, it was still fun and we discussed many very important topics such as wolverine's blowdrying techniques.

as things stand right now:

Versatility project: on hold
100 themes: on hold
every project pertaining to my art stuff, drawing or painting, digital or real: on hold

this status will not change until the end of the year, this saddens and frustrates me intensely but what can I do?
-EDIT-

but it's a long one ^__^ , bear with me please, I need some feedback.

meArt

Several things are happening with my art and illustrations:
Firstly I'm entirely passionate about creating new stuff right now, schools been keeping me really busy of late so all I've managed to get out has been a couple of pencil pages,(expect this to change soon, only 6 days left of the year )

Secondly, been on this bender recently about 'my style', it's all hogwash, I don't have one, in fact, I can't even decide which medium I really like, all the way from pencilling little pinups like my recent stuff to vector wallpaper type stuff (which you won't find in this gallery, but trust me) at the same time I'm getting deeper into animating in 3D.

Thirdly, although not unrelated to the above point, I want to push my boundaries, see how versatile I really could be, so I've been thinking of starting a series of 'art after______' in which I attempt to create pieces that look like they were drawn or created by other great artists. This is where the fun begins, because I'm asking you my dear watchers, friends and visitors, for ideas and challenges, in fact it won't work without you because I'll end up creating stuff after art I already know and like. You can see the project's progress here [link]

ArtJam

The Gauteng ArtJam, a joint effort of some of us here on DA and the Comicworx crew, is now a monthly event held the last weekend of each month. A group of Artists basically get together to meet, draw talk rubbish and further their careers.

The idea has been raised that we hold the next one somewhere in Pretoria or preferably Centurion area so it'll be more central between Jozi and Pretoria, right now it doesn't have a new home. We've found that a comic shop makes a nicer environment than a restaurant, my guess would be that a gallery would work too.

Let me know if you want to be kept posted on these developments so you can join us or if you have any ideas for the event's home, please.

When I was very young (about 4 or 5) I formulated an opinion of rugby.

I was in Paris watching a game with my family and friends, it must have been a big game, cos they'd gathered to watch it.
After about ten minutes I ask my aunt (my parents were in SA)

"aunty, those men, are they very poor?"
"uhm, no my darling" "they're actually well paid"
"oh"

...

"why do you ask, my darling"
"cos I think they should buy all their own balls and stop fighting for one"

I'll admit my opinion hasn't been much revised over the years, I still find it a senslessy brutal sport and overall too technical for it's own good. but my word was I happy when we beat England in the World Cup last night, all the national pride just wouldn't stay put. so YAY for the senselessy brutal sport making everybody happy and making random strangers hugging in the streets.

.....
The force is strong with this young padawan, see for yourself.
I'm still very very busy with practical finals for uni, so please excuse the lack of artsy and I may be slow to respond etc
Since Monday I have resumed my sentence and I'm now back in class until the end of the year. I haven't done half the things I intended to, but I've done a few that weren't on the list. This last semester looks scary intense, I'll try to stay active here but no promises yet. I still intend to stick to my rule of not posting anything from school, but if it takes all my time I may not have a choice eventually.

btw
this: doesn't count. My rule is about just submitting whatever you happen to be working on, whereas this stands alone. IMO

Fantastic Four, rise of the silver surfer

After a string of dissapointments when it comes to comic book movies, my hopes weren't very high for this one.Let's face it, the first one was a disaster, it's a sequel and IMO the Four are rather cliched characters; there's the muscles, the cocky one, the thinker/genius, and the girl. I still decided to see it and at a SK Classic, nogal ( I figured if all it's got going for it are the special effects, I'll give it it's best shot).

Story/Characters Each of the characters were more shallow with too many inconsistancies to be taken seriously( I won't go into detail because I'm trying not to post any spoilers). The storyline is very obvious even the smaller arcs follow cliched patterns, which will make it probanly more suitable for a younger audience.

Graphics/fx As expected. Pretty. Believable considering how unbelievable. I was dissapointed with Galactacus, It just didn't feel as real as it should have. I was impressed by the scenes involving a certain character's interaction with 'the beacon'. (no spoilers is really difficult, I'll probably end up updating this later on with details)

Overall It doesn't fair too badly, at least it's not as bad as the first one. The shallow and obvious storyline is being held together by the fx. That being said, it is the kind of movie which you can relax while you watch it.

~The next review will be Shrek the Third
A couple of sketchbook carrying oddballs gathered on Saturday at Brightwater for a meet and draw. It was fun with drawing tutoring, funny looks from the waiters, random conversation topics, and a few awkward moments which we tried to capture on camera when we remembered.
I've just finished watching the first series, wow I love this series. The way the characters are connected, the way their abilities are discovered and play out, the whole feel of it which could easily be over the top in an all too typical superhero/ X-men style. I find it nearly as gripping as prison break without being as intense and while it has a similar questioning plotline as Lost; it feels as though it actually has an answer and won't be as frustrating.
I have discovered that I can't live with or without technology. Ans when things start going buggy with your OS you should deal with it immediately, not wait until it lets you down completely. About a month ago I started to pick up quirks with windows(more than usual I mean), my LAN driver would uninstall itself, obscure error messages, blank autoplay boxes, that sort of thing none of them major or threatening in any way, we have wireless at home so I don't need to use a cable.
Then about a week before moderation(creative exams) aka sleepless crunchtime marathon week, maya won't render (memory exception something blah blah) photoshop takes 11 mins to open, and I can't go online at all ( sometimes maya would be unlicensed because of this) After effects just closes in the middle of an operation leaving me looking at my desktop.

What a nightmare, I handed in within an hour of moderation(technically should have been in a week earlier 'at the latest&#039.

on spider-man..

If you've ever read the comic books you would be appalled at how gruesomely they've managed to murder the storylines (even worse than in 1 or 2) .They introduce Gwen Stacey to appease the fans more than to serve any point in the story. By cramming all three villains (Venom, Sandman and Hobgoblin) all into one short movie they managed to eradicate everything of meaning in peter parker's personal, internal struggle, which in my opinion is the significant difference between spider-man and so many other superheroes, this movie would have been better suited for superman, for instance.
The Graphics (yes capital G) are Amazing (yes capital A) the fight sequences are slick, every impact believable, except for some of the sandman's shots ( but I can't imagine how else they could have done them) Venom was far better than I would have guessed (can anyone show me how they rigged it?) and the play with Peter's look was pretty decent as well. Overall too fast, too plastic movie with enough wow to make you watch it again. And the intro was phenomenal, I want to download it.

Just grouping these together as putting them on my usual journal is starting to create clutter, I'm expecting to do this more often so let me know what you think. What you think about my opinions here, what you think I should review etc etc.

Coming up
Still looking forward to Transformers and Ratatouille. One of the things I really hate about living in South Africa is that we're so far behind with movie release dates.

Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix

Wow
Truly amazing movie. Watch it.Watch it now. Watch it again
I'll rewrite this into a full review in a week or or so when more people have had a chance to see it

I'm a fan of the books. Every HP movie has impressed me with the adaptation this one is no exception.Sure there are huge chunks missing, have you seen the book? There are places where they managed to condense four scenes into a single line of dialogue, as sad as the requirement to do so may be. The genius in composing the scenes to get the right emotions and story with so little screen time available, wow, really. The biggest problem with this movie is that it is too short, this makes the pacing a little heavy to handle, I think they could easily have extended the time for this story. This is one of those movies where the special edition/directors cut/extended version dvd is going to be worth having.

Graphic and effects are for the most part outstanding. There are a couple of shots in the build up which are not quite believable but they negligible in the whole thing. While I feel that Daniel, Emma and Rupert have outgrown their roles a bit. The casting of the new characters and the adult characters (both new and old) is exceptionally brilliant.

Yes, go see it!

Shrek the Third

Here be Spoilers because I don't care
My deepest heartfelt apologies to any of my watchers who saw this unprepared, I suppose I was struggling to believe how much of a botch up Dreamworks had made, trying to find something good. So if this review feels more like a rant, it's because it is.

Story/Characters
Shrek (the first one) was a great story, unexpected, clever and with well developed characters, when it starts you KNOW he couldn't care less and then as it progresses you get to really watch him grow out of it...anyway I'm not reviewing that one, let's move along shall we? The second one while not as well developed sat well because we got a true appreciation for their new life and the humour carried well enough. This one was abysmal, I can imagine writing going something like this "uh we've decided it would be cheaper to make a movie using the props and characters we've already got so we need a continuation story, anybody got any ideas?"
"they could have a baby"
"they could inherit the kingdom"
"we could give more screen time to the edge characters, like the princesses"
"they could fight some villians"
"hmm, yes I like them all, let's do it"
Somehow they managed to take the Shrek character we got to know and could identify with and reduce him to a generic "this world's too much for me" wimp, besides his appearance and the fact that he carries arthur around on his shoulder, he isn't an ogre any more.
The secondary characters like the princesses were sad, too much time spent on too little, yes there were a few gags but whole scenes for a gag?please don't ask me to take you seriously.

Graphics and scenery
yes, uhm same as Shrek and II? It's one of those great little loopholes in an animated sequel, same textures, lighting and mostly the same scenery. The new scenery, the high school, the ship, Merlin's place and so forth were not very impressive, no depth beyond the area of interest. Even the swamp which we know previously to be part of a bigger scene was somehow flattened down to a single space, I blame layout/composition.

I'm not sure if this is just me but somewhere I managed to lose track of how the swamp, far far away, worcestershire and Merlin's place relate to each other.I suspect there are inconsistancies in the direction's that their journeys take which do that to the viewer (I'm not going to watch it again to check my theory)possibly the creators didn't work it out well enough, which may be why the choice to travel by ship.

is it really this bad?
Yes. Nearly every shot's purpose is just a gag, and you shouldn't string so many gags together on top of such a flaky story and character development. That may work for some kids but the tone of humour pushes it out of that bracket.Of the whole movie I can only think of one section which reminds me of the reason I used to like Shrek and that...

The idea behind this project is to expand and explore my versatility as an illustrator. So in posing a challenge reach as far as you want, tell m, for example, to draw like your favourite 18th century or modern artists, to capture a certain theme in vector or whatever. Real media or digital or mixed.

Send me a note with your challenge idea

there are some limitations:
I'm limiting things to illustration- 2D pieces, not 3D and not Sculpture, and while I love animating, it'll just take too long to embark on that sort of thing right now.
intense classical paintings are also out, since they take a little too long for all the layered drying, and the materials are a bit on the pricey side for me
Tell me what you think of the project below

Figured it was time to update this journal and this was a project I could use to really push myself and pad out the folio.

It would be awsome to get several people doing this at the same time, so join in ok... it looks like a lot but remember there is no deadline

The Rules

It works like this, you get a list of 100 topics/themes/ideas and make your way through them, indicating how far you are by using italics to show that your busy with a piece and bold for a completed piece.

Use as many styles as possible to do this from dark to chibi and watercolour to vector.
Except photography, it would be too easy.

Do not use any previous work, each piece needs to be an original, thats the point.

Bend your concepts for variety, if you take the ideas at face value, for instance, you're not going to have barely any action poses etc.

right, well, on your marks.
