This just kind of flitted into my head just now:

I intended the Fowl to be a believable Batman. Don’t get me wrong, I loves me the Batman as is. He’s a shining pillar of human achievement and a symbol righteous retribution, and I think that’s pretty keen. But my favorite Batman stories, the one’s that made me seriously want to write comics, were the stories where he had to overcome his own problems in order to overcome the villain. Stories like Venom, in which he is almost undone by his obsession to be stronger, or Knightfall, which ends in his ultimate defeat because he failed to get over his need to be self-sufficient. Remember Prey? Hugo Strange is pop-psychoanalyzing him on television while Bruce Wayne watches helpless, slowly going insane? What about Daredevil? Born Again, and the issues leading up to it? Denny O’Neil’s the Question, that masterpiece? That’s what I’m talking about, here. Stories we can all relate to, because these men have to slay the same demons we all do, only their stakes are a bit higher.

The Green Arrow, Daredevil, and Question series’ of the late eighties and the magnificent early runs of Legends of the Dark Knight are what I’m referring to when I say “believable”. These characters had relationships and hardships what extended beyond the Clark Kent/Lois Lane pale comics usually subscribe to. Family members felt like people, not plot devices. When someone died, you cried where before you might have rolled your eyes. Sometimes you got angry at the hero, sometimes you didn’t want to be around them, but like real friends, you were always on their side and in their corner when the chips were down and the Kingpin came a’knockin’. Then came the nineties and everything went to hell, but with the Fowl, I hope to bring back tradition of O’Neil and Grell.

I implore you, do not think I aspire to recreate the Ultimates, Supreme Power, the Boys or the Authority. Not for me is the path of the cynic, the paranoid pessimist, or the establishmentaphobe. There will be no government-bred superfolk in my world. In fact, I think a federally funded superteam defeats the purpose of superheroes. They are not agents of the law, but rather, by definition, vigilantes and criminals. They operate outside the law in order to enforce justice. They are counter-establishment (not anti). As soon as they’re put on Uncle Sam’s payroll, they become little more that bizarrely-clad soldiers. Not that I have anything against soldiers, mind you. They’re just not superheroes (unless they have a secret identity, that is).

But I digress: The Fowl and his alter ego, Stephen DeMoge, are my first attempt at creating realistic, relatable superheroes for the twenty first century, hang-ups and compulsions and mental illnesses and all. He’s early Bruce Wayne with Vic Sage’s attitude and Matt Murdock’s luck, clad in slacks, not tights. He’s got the Shadow’s villains in Hellboy’s world, too, but that’s a discussion for another post.

THE PRIVATE FILES OF THE FOWL no. 3 is now on sale, collecting the stories “Stock in Murder”, “There is Infection…”, “Maternity Ward Doom”, and the Sister Mary Vendetta preview. $5.00 a full-sized copy and a personalized piece of Fowl art, shipping included. Note me to reserve.

Also, I'll be at the comic con all this week. You know it's me, 'cause I'm the one guy who's not dressed like an Stormtrooper.

Special shout out to , who's dong great things with his CRIMINALLY underrated comic, Hexagon Death Squad. Crazy women with swords, people. Snap to it.

As 2007 draws to a close, I feel compelled to update the lot of you on the progress those noble artists have made on the Fowl Annual, entitled "Dante's Furnace." Keep in mind that many pages are still missing, so I doubt the story will make a whole lot of sense if you try to read through it now. Oh, and it doesn't have lettering yet. That would also impede reading.
In other news, THE PRIVATE FILES OF THE FOWL #2 is coming out November 27th. Sure, you can read it online for free, but should you want to order a copy (makes great Holiday gift!) five bucks gets you two manga-sized ashcan copies – a singed one to keep in a cool, dry place and a regular one to show all your friends – and an original piece of Fowl-related art.

Send me a note to order. If you want one but can’t pay, tha’s cool. I’ll send you a single copy anyway. That said, I’d kind of like some payment over here. Y’know, if it’s not too much trouble.

1) I am both left and right winged, 'cause you need both if you want to fly.
2) I lost my "childhood innocence" in a hotel room in Paris, France.
3) I met Neil Gaimen this summer, found him to be the warmest man I'd ever met, and decided right then and there to make a career out of Comic Books.
4) My favorite works of literature are "Measure for Measure" and "the Great Gatsby", which you can find references to in my Fowl stories.
5) I came up with the Fowl's symbol when I saw a hawk out my window, hovering over a field, just about to strike. I've seen that omen from time to time since then, and it's always been good luck.
6) My mother was reised a strict Catholic, which find it's way into my stories as well. The character "Sister Mary Vendetta" is based on her descriptions of her experiences with nuns.
7) I love Aerosmith.
8) I am terrified of whales.

I tag my Fowl artists (listed below).

As promised, I’ve been writing a one-shot magickal mystery comic (working title “Dante’s Furnace” ) that will be drawn by the crème of the dA crop. Here’s who I have on the book at this time, in order of appearance in the story:

Look at ‘em. Just look at all that talent. I ask you, boys and girls, how can you not be psyched as hell about this? Do you want to on that list? Are you on that list, and want to beg out? Let me know and I’ll see if we can work something out.

(I know not everyone has received all (or any) of their part of the script, but I assure you, I’ll get them to you as soon as I can. I’m only one man… )

Hey, sinners.

As promised, I’ve been writing a one-shot magickal mystery comic (working title “Dante’s Furnace” ) that will be drawn by the crème of the dA crop. Here’s who I have on the book at this time, in order of appearance in the story:

Hey there, sinners.

I’ve been convinced to write a one-shot entitled “Dante’s Furnace.” It features the Fowl and the Mime as they unravel the mystery behind a series of ritual murders during the hottest summer in Illinois’ history. There’s something demonic in the works. Yes, we got trouble my friends, right here in Parris City.

But though I will write this thing – and it will rock your mind – I can’t draw all of it. Frankly, I just don’t have the time. So who’s going to draw it?

YOU ARE!

Yes sir, this going to be a book of many artists. has stepped up to plate so far, with offering to do colors, on the lettering, and the incomparable doing the cover (any maybe even some interior art. Fingers crossed, kids). They’re doing it, so why not you? You’re a great artist, right? Whover you are, I can find a place for you. I really can.

In other news, here are the pin-ups that will be featured in “the Private Files of the Fowl,” available July 26th.

[link]

Thank you to everyone who submitted. Should anyone else care to do one, I don’t go to print until the 18th. There’s still time.
I was tagged by to fill out another character quiz. Instead of doing the usual cast of the Fowl, the Mime, and Polly, I decided to do the Avian Avenger’s rogues gallery. They are:

The LAUGH: an existentialist serial killer, seemingly unkillable, who uses voodoo and drugs to raise the dead and play with reality. He obsesses over killing the Fowl, believing that this will make him live forever.
LYTA HATAKI: district attorney-tuned-criminal mastermind whose crimes baffle even the most astute of criminologists. Her intellect surpasses even that of Stephen DeMoge.
DRIPPY PATTERSON: a botched murder turned this arrogant biochemist into a walking plague ship, constantly oozing toxins and acids from his every pore and orifice. Now he sells drugs.
WING XU: the warrior supreme, trained from birth to become the “Great Xan” who would bring order to a chaotic world – even if that means resorting to terrorism and war crimes.
VAN IKE: the overlooked wife of a famous sculptor silently yearning for attention, Vanessa Eisenhower hunts and kills other artists, turning them into macabre works of art.

How Old Are You?
LAUGH: Oh, I’m OLD. Older than SIN.
HATAKI: Twenty nine years, ten months, four weeks, two days.
PATTERSON: Thirty friggin’ five.
WING XU: I am thirty years old.
VAN IKE: It’s impolite to askÂ

Height?
LAUGH: High as a KITE!
HATAKI: Five feet, nine inches.
PATTERSON: Damn if I know. Some days I wake up taller, some days I’m five goddamn three.
WING XU: I am six feet and three inches tall.
VAN IKE: Tall…ish… I think.

You Got Any Bad Habits?
LAUGH: I’m a sucker for a LITTLE GIRL in a PINK DRESS.
HATAKI: Bad habits are the hallmarks of a lack of discipline.
PATTERSON: Well, no shit. Wouldn’t you?
WING XU: The body and the mind must be pure and unpolluted if any victory is to be attained.
VAN IKE: Tiny, tiny pillsÂ

Have Any Kids?
LAUGH: Depends. How do you mean HAD?
HATAKI: I hate children.
PATTERSON: Yeah. The bitch got them in the divorce.
WING XU: One day soon, I will choose a woman of sufficient genetic perfection and sire a child. I look forward to being a...

This epic tale, of course, is written and drawn by yours truly. It’s full of cage fighters and napalm, so it ought to be a good time.

In other news, I’m holding a FOWL ART JAM. To emphasize the importance of this, I’ll say it again.

A FOWL ART JAM.

What kind of Jam, you ask? Make yourself a black and white pin-up featuring the Jihadist of Justice. He can be striking a pose on a rooftop, tearing into a sea of thugs, or even interacting with characters of your own. The one I like the most will be featured in the upcoming Fowl comic book (still scheduled to come out in late July. Reserve you copy today!).

That’s right, you – yes, YOU – could have your art featured in a low-budget, self-published, by-order-only comic book! My God, it’s the chance of a lifetime!

To get you into the spirit of things, take a gander at what other fine deviants have done with the Fowl and his buddies:
It seems I must pick a few of my characters and have them fill out a little questionnaire. Our players:
The Fowl [link]
Polly [link]
The Mime [link]
And just to mix it up, The Laugh [link]

1) How Old Are You?
Fowl: Thirty-one.
Polly: I’ll be twenty-five this September
Mime: Twenty-seven, why?
Laugh: As old as my BONES and as young as my EYES.

2)Height?
Fowl: 6’ 3”
Polly: 5’ even.
Mime: 5’ 11”
Laugh: PLATFORMS!

3)You Got Any Bad Habits??
Fowl: I have a drink every now and then, so what?
Polly: Well, I do have a dreadful habit of leaving the kitchen light on
Mime: Doesn’t everyone?
Laugh: I eat WAY to many NEWBORNS.

4)You a virgin?
Fowl: Nope.
Polly: Yes. I will remain so until my wedding night, and not a day before.
Mime: Wow, ah… no. Really didn’t expect that one
Laugh: Hmm. I feel like I should say something twisted about my father here, but… I’m just not in the mood.

5)Who's your Mate/Spouse?
Fowl: I… well, Trish. It’s funny to think about it that way.
Polly: *sigh* No one in particular
Mime: Mate? Steve, I guess. It’s one of those complicated, non-committal relationships.
Laugh: WILLING of UNWILLING? HA. NO ONE but ME. I’m not WIRED that way.

6)Have Any Kids?
Fowl: I don’t know if I’d be the best dad
Polly: Not yet.
Mime: No, I don’t.
Laugh: I leave a little of myself with EVERYONE I MEET.

7)Favorite Food?
Fowl: I’ve always been a sucker for a good Sea Bass.
Polly: Pancakes!
Mime: Sushi, definitely.
Laugh: Honestly, those NEWBORNS will be the DEATH of me. They’re PURE FAT, I know, but I just can’t seem to HELP myself.

8)Favorite Ice Cream flavour?
Fowl: Hm. Mint. No chips, just the mint.
Polly: Chocolate and marshmallows... oh dear, now I’m craving it.
Mime: Cherry Garcia.
Laugh: Are you KIDDING? I don’t eat ICE CREAM. It CLOGS your ARTERIES.

9)Killed anyone?
Fowl: Many times over. If I had the chance to kill them all again, I’d do that too. Hell, I’d pay for the opportunity.
Polly: Not recently.
Mime: No, I haven’t. Not that I have anything against it, mind you, I just haven’t had the need to.
Laugh: Has the PRESIDENT ever SCREWED and INTERN?

10)Hate anyone?
Fowl: Lots of people. Why?
Polly: I try not to.
Mime: Yeah, but he’s back in California.
Laugh: MISTER ROGERS.

11)Any Secrets?
Fowl: Well, yeah
Polly: Naturally.
Mime: Of course.
Laugh: No SIR! My life’s an OPEN BOOK! Ask me ANYTHING.

12)Love Anyone?
Fowl: I love Polly like family. I love Trish like… like nothing else. I also love Aerosmith.
Polly: I love a good book.
Mime: I love my papa. And... I love Steve. And I think – I hope, anyway – he feels the same way about me.
Laugh: I love SYSTEM OF A DOWN. POETRY in VIOLENCE!

That was fun. Now, I’m supposed to tell some other people to do the same thing. All right, fine. and , get on it.
"Fowl Language" is my new monthly newsletter, informing the curious public about all things that relate to the Jihadist of Justice and the other inhabitants of Parris City.

First off, for those of you who didn't know already, the Cloaked Capo will be featured in a self-pubished comic coming out July 25th. In this gripping tale, the Avian Avenger faces zombies, SWAT teams, and his existential enemy THE LAUGH, with the lives of a dozen college students haging in the balance.

This fine peice of American literature now has a cover, care of , who is pretty much The Man. Check this out: [link] Seriously, how could you pass a up a book with a cover like that? It's a pistol-packing superhero in a swarm of zombies! It's like all the best movies of the 70's rolled into one.

The Feathered Felon will also be featured in a multi-artist mega comic (for lack of a better term), the details of which I am going to withhold out of respect for the privacy of the other artists involved. Dan Schkade is not one to jump the gun, no sir.

That's my name, by the way. Daniel Thomas Schkade. It's German, with a touch of Irish. Don't tell anyone.

Until next time, and remember: Crime pays, but the income tax is killer.

Today is my birthday. March 24th, that is. I'm not sure when you're reading this. Anyway, point is, I'm older. I won't say exactly how old (for no real reason except that I just don't feel like sayin') but I will say this; on Monday, I will visit the blood bank for the first time and let the vampires open my arteries. And it will be awesome.

By day, mafia scion Stephen DeMoge is the CEO of the largest corporation in Parris City. By night, he hunts the organized underworld as the costumed vigilante known as THE FOWL!

Yes, the Fowl; the Cloaked Capo, the Jihadist of Justice, the Pollo con Power… a pulpy crimefighter who uses knives, firearms, and a network of underlings to wage guerilla warfare on the Parris City Mafiosi. He’s got Hannibal Lecter’s brains, Jason Bourne’s moves, and Dirty Harry’s views on capital punishment – all of which he employs to fight psychotic gangsters, superhuman hitmen, deranged serial killers, and his own spotty mental health.

And so we watch Stephen as he tries to balance running his company, smashing crime, and a maintaining a relationship with jazz singer Trisha Allard – who lives a double life as Parris City’s other prominent costumed vigilante, the Mime – all under the watchful eye of his sunny little housemaid, Polly.

It’s hunting season in Parris City
