was released in Singapore on October 19, 2006 & Malaysia on November 9, 2006 with English and Chinese subtitles. It has also been released in Hong Kong and Taiwan. The sequel was released in Hong Kong on November 3, 2006, with news that the second movie will be released in Singapore on December 28, 2006 with English and Chinese subtitles.

Cinema Topics Online has confirmed that there are plans for an American screening of these movies and even an American remake, depending on their commercial success. A date has not been stated, however.[1][Not in citation given]

The opening starts with a fly past an old, barren, desert-like plain, moving through a tunnel-like struture of, presumably, bones. As an eerie soundtrack of coral oohs and aahs. Ryuk is sitting on the edge of a hill, overlooking the Realm of Shinigami. Shinigamis are gambling with skulls, and two (skulls) fall on their sides. One of the Shinigami asks Ryuk to join them in their game, but he refuses. Light is seen bored in class, and other students are chatting among themselves. The teacher requests Light to translate an English sentence to Japanese, and Light does so with perfection. As Lights walks home, news is being heard to be reporting about a death of a woman in her thirties and an arrest of a 35 year old man for rape and murder. Then both Light and Ryuk's face come together, agreeing the world is rotten.

Light, again, bored in class, then sees a book drop from the sky to land on the floor. After school ends, Light walks past the place the book dropped at and hesitates awhile before going to get it. He sees the book with a title written as Death Note. He opens it, reads the instruction on it, and laughs at "The human whose name is written in this note, shall die", thinking it stupid, sick and juvenile. He returns the note to its position and walks off, then after a while, looks back. He then crosses a road to go home, and the note is seen in his bag. He reaches home and reads the full list of instruction on the note in his room, still thinking it was a well thought-out prank. He goes to lie on his bed then suddenly getting up to attempt to write something on the note, then pauses, thinking that if someone died, he would be a murderer.

The news on the TV reports a man holding teachers and students of a school as hostages. They showed the face and the name of the suspect. Light wrote the suspect's name and waits for forty seconds. Just before he switches off the TV, the news reports students and teachers rushing out of the compound and the suspect is dead. Light is shocked and reassures himself that it is a coincidence. His mum then calls him to prepare to go off to prep course. Light thinks that if Death Note is real, he should test it again on a criminal that wasn't too important. He sees his classmate, Sudou, threatening another, Ryu-ji, for money, and thought about killing him, but decides not to touch someone he actually knew. As Light walks off after class, he mused about how the world is filled with people its better off without. He sees and hears a man, with his group of friends, harassing a lady. The persons name is Shibuima Takuo. Light enters a bookshop and writes on the note, different spellings of Shibuima Takuo and the reason for his death to be by accident. The lady escapes and Taku chases after her by motorbike, crashes into a large lorry and dies. Light is stunned but finally realizes the note is real.

Ryuk, in the Shinigami realm, says its been five days since he dropped his note to the Human realm and should be about time for him to leave. The Shinigamis are surprised he dropped his note and even more so when he said he dropped it to the Human realm. Ryuk walks down a long staircase to the entrance to the Humans realm, spread his wings and disappeared. Light returns home and passes his result booklet to his anxious mum, who was overjoyed to see her son getting first in examinations, and asked if Light has anything he wanted. Light replied no, because he had gotten what he wanted. As he looked at the names he has written on the note, Ryuk arrives and scares the hell out of Light. Light told Ryuk he has been expecting him. Ryuk is surprised that Light has done so much in only 5 days. Light asks if Ryuk is here to take his soul, and Ryuk tells Light that the note is now property of the Human realm and is now Lights. If Light should give it to someone else, then Ryuk will erase all his memories of it. There is no penalty for using the note, just that the user may experience torment it may bring and the user can neither go to heaven nor hell. When Light dies, Ryuk will be the one to write Lights name on the note.

Lights mum calls to bring up apples for him and Ryuk tells Light that only a person who has touched the note can see and hear him. Ryuk emphasize that he did not choose Light but it happened to land somewhere here and thus the instructions where written in English, the most popular language in the Humans realm. Ryuk also says that he dropped the note because he was bored. Ryuk then goes on to tell Light that Shinigamis nowadays dont have much to do except to sleep and gamble. If a Shinigami was seen to write a human name on it, they would be scorned at and Shinigamis dont die even if you write their names on it. Before the series begins, Ryuk writes instructions in English inside his Death Note with the belief that English is the most popular language in the world.

1) The human whose name is written in this note shall die.
2) This note will not take effect unless the writer has the subject's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.
3) If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the subject's name, it will happen.
4) If the cause of death is not specified, the subject will simply die of a heart attack.
5) After writing the cause of death, the details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

Unwritten rules

These rules were not written in the Death Note, but are revealed throughout the story in every TankÅbon volume of the manga in the form of "How to Use" instructions.

Volume 1

How to Use: I
-The Human whose name is written in this note shall die.
-This Note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.
If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen.
-If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack.
-After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

How to Use: II
-This note shall become the property of the human world, once it touches the ground of (arrives in) the human world.
-The owner of the note can recognize the image and voice of the original owner, i.e a god of death.
-The human who uses this note can neither go to Heaven nor Hell.

How to Use: III
-If the time of death is written within 40 seconds after writing the cause of death as a heart attack, the time of death can be manipulated, and the time can go into effect within 40 seconds after writing the name.
-The human who touches the DEATH NOTE can recognize the image and voice of its original owner, a god of death, even if the human is not the owner of the note.

How to Use: IV
-The person in possession of the DEATH NOTE is possessed by a god of death, its original owner, until they die.
-If a human uses the note, a god of death usually appears in front of him/her within 39 days after he/she uses the note.
-Gods of death, the original owners of the DEATH NOTE, do not do, in principle, anything which will help or prevent the deaths in the note.
-A god of death has no obligation to completely explain how to use the note or rules which will apply to the human who owns it.

How to Use: V
-A god of death can extend his life by putting human names on the note, but humans cannot.
-A person can shorten his or her own life by using the note.
-The human who becomes the owner of the DEATH NOTE can, in exchange of half his/her remaining life, get the eyeballs of the god of death which will enable him/her to see a human's name and remaining lifetime when looking though them.
-A god of death cannot be killed even if stabbed in his heart with a knife or shot in the head with a gun. However, there are ways to kill a god of death, which are not generally known to the gods of death.

How to Use: VI
-The conditions for death will not be realized unless it is physically possible for that human or it is reasonably assumed to be carried out by that human.
-The specific scope of the condition for death is not known to the gods of death, either. So, you must examine and find out.
-If any user of death note writes his/her name, he/she dies and become a death god

How to Use: VII
-One page taken from the DEATH NOTE, or even a fragment of the page, contains the full effects of the note.
-The instrument to write with can be anything, ((e.g. cosmetics, blood, etc)) as long as it can write directly onto the note and remains as legible letters.
-Even the original owners of the DEATH NOTE, gods of death, do not know much about the note.

Volume 2

How to Use: VIII
-You may also write the cause and/or details of death prior to filling in the name of the individual. Be sure to insert the name in front of the written cause of death. You have about 19 days (according to the human calendar) in order to fill in a name.
-Even if you do not actually possess the DEATH NOTE, the effect will be the same if you can recognize the person and his/her name to place in the blank.

How to Use: IX
-The DEATH NOTE will not affect those under 780 days old.

Light Yagami (Kira) (å¤ç¥æ, Yagami Raito?) Voiced by: Mamoru Miyano
The main character of Death Note, Light is a brilliant but bored 17-year old student. When he finds the Death Note dropped in the human world by Ryuk, a Shinigami, he decides to use it to kill all criminals, his ultimate goal being to cleanse the world of evil to create a utopia and to be the God of this new world.

LL (ã¨ã«, Eru?) Voiced by: Kappei Yamaguchi
L is the world's top-rated detective, tasked with tracking down and arresting Kira, and Light's nemesis. His disheveled appearance masks his great powers of deduction and insight. L has many quirks, such as sitting in an odd manner and snacking on sweets in the middle of meetings. He often takes drastic strategies to confuse and force his opponents, and on several occasions he has willingly disclosed several of his weaknesses to Kira at the risk of his own life in the hopes that he would lure him into a trap.

Misa Amane (Kira No. 2) (å¼¥æµ·ç , Amane Misa?) Voiced by: Aya Hirano
A girl with an immense crush on Kira. She is a famous model, and tends to wear Punk Lolita clothing. She is immature and has a tendency to refer to herself in the third person (calling herself "Misa-Misa") in an attempt to be cute. Misa is totally devoted to Light, and she once said that she loved him "at first sight". Light, however, only views her as an asset to his plans because of her Death Note and her "Shinigami Eyes" (that she obtained at the cost of half of her remaining life span). These "Shinigami Eyes" give Misa the ability to know people's names by looking at their faces, thereby giving Kira an edge in his battle against his enemies.

Mello (ã¡ã, Mero?)
Mello was an orphan who grew up with Near in Watari's shelter for gifted children. He was also a primary candidate to become L's successor. Similar to L's fondness for sweets, he is often seen eating bars of chocolate. When he receives news of L's death, he swears to avenge L by capturing Kira. Contrary to Near, Mello, although quite intelligent, often lets his emotions get the better of him.

Near (ãã¢, Nia?)
Like Mello, Near was one of the candidates to become L's successor. He too shares a similarity to L: much like L played with things such as sugar cubes and forks, Near is seen playing with toys and his hair throughout the series. When Near learned of L's death, he offered to join forces with Mello to fight Kira. When Mello turned down his offer, he gained the support of the US government and formed the Secret Provision for Kira (SPK).

Shinigami (The Death Gods)
Shinigami, or their formal name Death Gods, are demon-like characters whom live in the Shinigami Realm. To increase their life-span, the Shinigami write the names of humans in their Death Notes. However, because of the fact that the Shinigami realm is incredibly dull, this act is usually laughed at, and thus done in privacy. Shinigami cannot be killed by conventional means, such as shooting or stabbing.

Ryuk (ãªã¥ã¼ã¯, RyÅ«ku?) Voiced by: Shidou Nakamura
The original Shinigami who dropped the Death Note in the human world, which Light would pick up. Acting out of pure boredom, Ryuk begins the story of Death Note on a whim. Perhaps neutral by nature, Ryuk often refuses to aid Light and instead enjoys watching him struggle for his goal. The most important facet of Ryuk's character is that he is not Light's friend. He acts for his own interests and entertainment and often fails to tell Light key details about the Death Note.

Rem (ã¬ã , Remu?)
The female Shinigami who first gives Misa her Death Note and "eyes." She appears mainly during the "L" arc of the series and dies shortly before its conclusion. Similar to Ryuk, Rem possesses two Death Notes; however, she purposely gives a Death Note to Misa Amane. Rem inherited her second Death Note from Jealous and thought it only right to pass it on to Misa. Oddly enough, Rem inherits Jealous' love for Misa as well and is prompt to defend Misa even at the cost of her life.

Jealous (ã¸ã§ã©ã¹, Jerasu?)
Jealous only appears in a flashback during volume 4 when Rem explains a method to kill a Shinigami. In the flashback, Rem recalls Jealous watching over a younger Misa Amane in the human world. Surprised by his concern, Rem eventually looks over his shoulder and witnesses what should have been Misa Amane's last moments on Earth. Apparently infatuated with Misa, Jealous used his Death note to kill Misa's destined murderer. Moments later, Jealous himself turns to a pile of sand and rust as punishment for extending a human life. Jealous' name is commonly misspelled as "Gelus," which is what Jealous' name was romanized to until Death Note: How to Read 13 revealed the official spelling as Jealous.

Death Note first began as a manga series first serialized by Shueisha in Weekly Shonen Jump from the first issue in December 2003 to May 2006, with 108 chapters in total. The series has been published in its entirety in 12 graphic novels in Japan. Death Note was eventually licensed for North American publication by VIZ Media, and the first English language volume was released on October 4, 2005. The series has been adapted into a pair of live-action films (released in Japan on June 17, 2006 and November 3, 2006 respectively), and an anime series which commenced airing in Japan on October 3, 2006.

Story

Light Yagami is a brilliant, but bored, high school student who resents the crime and corruption in the world. His life undergoes a drastic change when he discovers a mysterious notebook, known as the "Death Note", lying on the ground in the year 2003. The Death Note's instructions claim that, if a human's name is written within it, that person shall die. Light is initially skeptical of the Death Note's authenticity, believing it is just a prank. However, after experimenting with it and killing two criminals, Light is forced to admit the Death Note is real. After meeting with the true owner of the Death Note, a shinigami named Ryuk, Light seeks to become "the God of the new world" by passing his judgment on criminals.

Soon, the number of inexplicable deaths of reported criminals catches the attention of the International Police Organization and a mysterious detective known only as "L". L quickly learns that the serial killer, dubbed by the public as "Kira"(derived from the Japanese pronouncation of the English word "Killer"), is located in Japan. L also concludes that Kira can kill people without laying a finger on them. Light realizes that L will be his greatest nemesis, and a race to prove mental superiority between the two begins.
