After not being seen for more than 30 years, the Japanese river otter (Lutra lutra whiteleyi) has been declared extinct by the country's Ministry of the Environment, which also last week declared several other species extinct......

passive anting is a little understood activity where an ant nest is sought out,  intentionally agitated into swarming the bird's body and, presumably, attacking them. it is speculated that the purpose is to stimulate the ants into releasing formic acid into the birds feathers as a form of insecticide/fungicide or that it somehow assists with molting. or maybe it's like catnip for some birds? akka seemed to enjoy it.

Ukko is a northwest crow. their range extends from Washington, through British Columbia, to Alaska.

possibly (depends on whose opinion you talk to) they are a different species than the more common american crow. shows how little people know, or care to know, about such a common bird. physically northwest crows tend to be a little smaller, the tail a little more squared, and they exhibit some different behaviors than the american crow. apparently they are exceptionally accomplished theives even among corvids.
