Well I've decided to jump on the bandwagon of "I don't like deviantART's user agreement so I'm not going to compromise the rights to my own work". Sorry 'bout that but I'm at a point where I feel it's more risky. Maybe when I get around to printing the copyright directly into the electronic image, I'll start posting again. My scraps will remain online until I feel like taking the time to remove them. I will probably still log on and check out artwork and add it to my favorites. I find some wonderful and inspiring stuff here.
Lotsa love!
Wow. I don't understand this. In one day my Blue Bones painting received abou 35 favorites in 3 or 4 hours and it hit its 1,000th view! So they gave me a discount on a print account. I have some art in a show right now that I'm entirely unhappy with. The show was originally supposed to be for a specific group of artists, then it was opened up to another group as well and the work looks poorly put together now. But that's the business. It's their gallery and it wasn't one of those things I could get in writing. It was sort of out of my hands and managed by someone else. I feel sorry that the person managing the gig got screwed. At least my art is on a wall somewhere. I'll take what I can get at the moment. You know, starving artist and all.

Okay, so that crap about having perfected my process, as usual, it was crap. I absolutely LOVE what I did on Sticks and Bones 7. The pictures of all these drawings are crummy so #7 doesn't show the linework that I did in it. There's a lot more than in the others. I also figured out that it's okay to put down the sticks from time to time and work right in with the charcoal (which I started doing in 6). When I switch between the two and use less ink, I get great results.

Someday after January when the Graduate Drawing Exhibit is over, I will try to take better pictures. (For some reason I CAN'T take pictures of drawings to save my life.)

Okay guys, you went to art school - tear 'em to shreds. I know there's a lot of weaknesses but I'm going to keep quiet about them until I hear from other people.

Well, as you can see I've posted four of the seven drawings for my graduat drawing final. They are not labeled chronologically but you only have to look to see which ones are newest. On the fourth (I believed it's labeled #1 though) drawing I finally perfected my process of working with the tools attached to the sticks. There's actually 6 drawings so far but the first two aren't pass-in-able.

So here's my process with these. I put on some dany industrial gothy music (or angry chick music), turn on my video camera, and set to work. For the first two drawings that aren't shown here I began with the page on the floor and my tools attached to a 5 foot long cardboard tube. OH THE FRUSTRATION. My drawing skills are very tight and my brain would just not let me loosen up enough for this. Plus I started in ink rather than charcoal at first.

So, round about now my process has been refined. I have to tape the page to a low table as working on the floor was killing my back and knees. I've shortened the sticks to about two feet and got skinnier ones. I start with vine charcoal so I can erase when I'm working through my compositional blunders in the beginning, then go from there. I add the "ink" on last (which is really watered down tempera paint cuz I'm poor) with a small bundle of stiff cloth tied tightly to a stick. I'm also throwing some white candle wax in there as a resist in areas I want to stay light. And I've finally stopped trying to draw bones and started deconstructing and reconstructing them as I do in my paintings. Of course now I'm four drawings into the assignment and they're due monday so there's no way I'm doing the old ones over. Heh...

Anyways, What to do with the videotapes?

I have a very broad and all inclusive definition of what is art. And I have nothing against fanart, anthro, anime, or other art like this. I've even seen beautifully rendered fanart that has a great amount of originality.

But god, it's hard to browse the drawing section of deviantART without wading chest deep through crappy anime ripoffs. Look, a piece of advice, if you've drawn it on notebook paper and that's not a very purposeful and sucessful part of the design, please put it in your scrap section!! And if your drawings lack style, originality, or without those at least some good technical skilll - again, scrapbook it cause it's obviously a work in progress if it's that lacking. I want to see DECENT art from these catagories when I browse the drawing section, NOT crap.

Sorry, I'm ranting. But I just don't want to wade through pages of it (and it is in great abundance) to see some decent work from those catagories in the drawing section.

I began a series of large bone drawings for my graduate drawing final project. I will upload them when the series is finished. Other than that, maybe I will try to throw some "scraps" on by the end of the weekend.

Hugs to you all! Thanks for looking at/commenting on my stuff. And remember, I'm watching you. So go make art!
