Wacom is awesome, their products are simply amazing (except the Cintiqs, they're just made out of win). Anyways, I've recently purchased a Wacom Bamboo Small and I've got to say, this thing is lovely.

My preliminary concern was using it. I imagined it to be a very awkward piece of hardware that would be totally unresponsive and nothing like a real pen.

I was wrong. This thing works, and I didn't even read the tutorial, just installed and used it. The surface behaves like a paper analogue and it really does feel like drawing on paper (albeit a little rubbery). I don't get why people say this is a hard thing to use, it feels so natural!

My second concern was size. This has an active area of 3.7" x 5.8". I first thought "this thing is tiny" and "...". However, it seemed so nice. Drawing on it quickly became second instinct.

Now, for the reason why I love this thing. I'm saving paper. Yes, that is it. Paper saving. No more spending a whole pack of Xerox paper on doodles, I have a tablet now. If you're an über paper consumer like me, this will pay for itself in the first week. Seriously.

If you're an even remotely serious artist and you kill orchards every year from paper use, get a tablet if you can. You'll make yourself feel better and the environment too.

First thing, I do not like the GIMP. I just don't like it. The GUI is not to my liking; it scares me

For raster editing, I use Photoshop and Paint.NET (MSPAINT also but who doesn't?)

Photoshop:
Price: 600~700+ USD

Worth every penny, pure awesome. Though it does require a moderately steep learning curve, it is very easy to use. You CAN NEVER master PS. Once you think you know everything about it, someone comes out with a new trick.

Pros: Very Powerful, Useful features like Smart Objects, Plug-ins = <3
Cons: VERY resource intensive, the CS3 icons are half assed; it still looks good though

---------------------------------

Paint.NET:
Price: 0 USD (excluding voluntary donation), FOSS

Very good for FOSS and packs all of that into 1 MB!! Great plug-in system and using the .NET framework, the GUI looks nice and pretty.

Pros: Pretty GUI, Simple and good interface, very light, Plug-ins = <333
Cons: No vector tools, Not as powerful as PS but hey, it's free

====================================================

So the winner? I use both. PDN for light editing and PS for the heavy duty stuff
In my opinion, PDN is the closest thing to Photoshop that you can get for free (legally)

As any good person would do when designing a page:
- Made sure the site worked
- Made sure that it looked good
- Tested it under different browsers
- And lastly, different resolutions

(shudder)

My monitor is set right now to 1280x1024. In my opinion, my favoriate res. Not to small, but not to big...just right.

But then I swithed my resolution back and forth to see how it looked. First off, if you're use 800x600 I say 'wow'. I cannot stand it. It is way too small for me and even scrolling through the average page is a pain. This dude I know has a 800x600 display...maybe that is why he's so pissy.

PS: I don't test on 640x480.
