The thinner I'm using now - turpinoid - is fine for cleaning the brushes, but I don't like painting with it. The paint just ... doesn't react how I expect it too. Maybe this is how paint normally reacts with thinner and I'm just too used to my Eco-house citrus thinner, but somehow I doubt it. The other thinner I used didn't react like this. I probably need to go to either Berkeley or San Fransisco to get more of the Eco-house. I was actually in SF today (and will be again on Sunday) but I was touring the galleries for class and certainly didn't have time to hunt down Amsterdam Art or Utrect. (Sunday I'll be at the Japantown AnimeCon, and won't have time then, either.) I don't even remember at which art store I bought the thinner, either, since it was back in ... oh ... '99? 2000, maybe? I guessing it was Amsterdam. Either way, I really don't have the time to make a special trip out that far just to get paint thinner. I suppose I could go see what alternatives my local store has.

Painting class started up again, in case you hadn't guessed. This semester we had a choice, we could do a short series on clouds, or we could do a night scene. Clouds sounded interesting, but the night scene sounded more so. So I went around town and took pictures after dark with my mom's digital camera (oh, for a tripod!) and came out with a few decent shots and a lot of duds. It was fun, though. My teacher made a new rule that we - advanced students, at least - had to use our own photographs, because too many of us last semester were dependent on magazene photos. It didn't affect me much, since out of the 14 images I've painted, only one was out of a magazine, and that was out of desperation.

Dick Blick is having a back to school sale, and some of their Copics are on sale. I'm trying to tell myself that I don't need more right now. Although I might break down and buy some of the fineliners. But geez, I really don't need to be spending more money. It's not about "need," though. It's about Art Supply Lust. And damn, Copics are sexy. Especially when they're on sale.

I was down at AnimeExpo this last weekend. My boss wasn't too keen on giving me 4th of July weekend off, but it's not like I would have been working the 4th anyway. I've never worked a paid holiday. Anyway, the con was awesome. Lot's of great cosplayers, and I spent far too much money because I bought a set of Copic markers and a Kirara plushie. The plushie wasn't that expensive, but the markers... well, anyone who's bought Copics will understand. But they're worth the price.

I'll have photos from the con up in my LJ in a few days, but I really don't have the energy right now.

The talent that comes out of these art classes is amazing - I honestly wasn't expecting to win anything. It's amazing enough to even get into the show, since there were 200+ pieces submitted and only 40 in the gallery.
This year I've submitted Yosemite, Animal Kingdom, and Canada. Hopefully one or two of them will make it in. There's over a hundred submissions every year, and about 30 - 40 make it into the gallery, depending on the sizes of the pieces. Although there are two shows this year, one on campus and one in the gallery downtown where it traditionally is, so there's a greater chance of any given piece of art getting in to something. If they do make it in, especially to the gallery show, there's a chance that they'll sell, especially since their only 8" x 10" and priced between $200 and $400. I don't like to part with my artwork, but still, that would be cool. Two years ago one of my broken color paintings made it in, and even won the Alumni Choice Award. It didn't sell, but I wasn't expecting it to; it was a 3' x 4' painting and priced around $500. But it did have a nice spot in the gallery, right over the wine.

I might not find out until the gallery opening next Thursday. x_x

Of art, life, and everything

Mood: overwhelmed
Listening to: Hello, Evanescence

As much as I like my painting class, it does cut into any time I might've had to do art for myself. And, let's face it, I've not been too good about getting pictures done in a timely manner even when I'm not taking a class. I have some gift art I've been meaning to do for months, and then there's the pictures I want to do for me. My schedule of working mostly evenings doesn't help any. It makes it rather hard to get stuff done on a workday.

(That reminds me that I need to find 5 more pictures of landscapes that I can use for class.)

The other upshot of my painting class is that my wrist. really. hurts. Worse than normal. I'm wearing a brace at the moment, or I wouldn't be typing. I wouldn't have thought painting would be such a problem, as I don't hold my hands at odd angles as I'm wont to do when I'm drawing, but I guess the tension is what does it. I might have to ban myself from using my script/liner brush, since that's the one I tense up the most with. (It'll help keep me from puting so much detail into the paintings anyway.)

I saw my regular doctor about my wrists some time ago, but all she did was ask me a few questions, make sure my wrists weren't broken (I coulda told her that they weren't ), tell me I have tendonitis, and give me a couple sheets with stretches and exercises. Not that they haven't been unhelpful, but they certainly haven't been has helpful as I'd like. I'm thinking it's time to see someone who specializes in this kind of thing. Joy, joy, another call to Kaiser.

Through this all I'm still trying to find time to write, which right now means printing pages out and writing on my lunch break. Yay for learning to ignore coworkers! At least the VCR is broken so I no longer have to try to ignore Ace Ventura and the like . Once in a great while someone would put on a decent movie, but most of the time... Anyway. I'm just glad I don't have to worry about that for the time being. I'm trying to get chapters out more quickly than I have been. It doesn't help that these chapters keep getting so damn long .

I think I've rambled on long enough for now. Off to work on these stupid collages (oh yeah, did I mention that? For painting class we need to do 10 paintings and 10 collages, and I've discovered that I ... like painting a whole lot better than collage. So they're not just "collages," they're "stupid collages," "darn collages," or "goddam collages," depending on how frustraited I am with them).

Well, this came as a bit of a surprise. It seems to be a generally better system, but advanced warning would have been nice. I have some other beefs with it though, such as sub-categories like fantasy and science fiction seem to be only under digital art, and not also under traditional. So with a picture like this, I have to put it under ... portraits? Other? It's fantasy, but it's not digital art, it's traditional, so I can't put it under fantasy. There is an Anime sub-category under both digital and traditional art, I'm glad to see, but under traditional art it's a sub-category of "drawings." So for my anime style paintings, I have to either miscategorize them as drawings, or miscategorize them in one of the painting sub-categories, like portraits or other.

Not all of my deviations seem to have made the transition yet, either, and are showing up as "deviation not found." I think I caught this just as it happened, more or less.

Addendum: The categories seem to have more or less settled themselves now, and many of my issues have been addressed. Except for one. I still don't like having to put paintings under the "drawings" category, simply because they're anime in style and there's no "anime" sub-category under &quot aintings."

(What am I supposed to put here...?)

Well, they do
I finally broke down and bought myself a subscription. They do a good job of making it enticing, especially the lack of adds - or rather, the lack of the " connection to adds.deviantart refused" message .

Anyway, we started the actual painting part of my painting class last week. I've missed working in oils. If it didn't require so much prep and cleanup time, I'd do it much more often. We have to do ten paintings and ten collages this semester, but they're only 8" x 10".

Yeah. 8" x 10". I sketch on paper bigger than that. But that does allow us to more or less get one painting done per class period, which is the point. We're working alla prima, so the idea is to get the painting done before the paint dries. Working in oils, that means I have about 3 days, more or less. Unlike the acrylics people, who have no leeway.

As soon as I'm sure the paint is dry - it's been cold and rainy, I'm sure the paint is still wet - I'll scan in the painting. I've been wanting to get some of my "fine art" works on here, but most of it is so big that scanning is out of the question, and we don't (yet) have a digital camera.

Another year come and gone, and I again didn't get done half the things I'd planned. But let's not dwell on that, ne? Art-wise, while I didn't accomplish everything I'd wanted, I did manage to create several pieces I'm very proud of. And hey, I started a new job back in Febuary, and that cuts down on the time I have to draw, right?

I don't generally make new year's resolutions, but in the upcoming year I plan to spend more time creating. Meaning I will set aside time during which I can draw or write and not feel guilty that I should be doing something like housework. I also plan to not waste so much time online. I don't mean that I think time online is wasted; I mean that I will not numbly stare at my browser and think "where can I go next...? There has to be somewhere..."

So if I keep it at those two, I think I can manage, right?
I can't ever seem to sharpen it to a point because whenever I get close the tip comes out, just below the wood. I don't chew my pencils, honest! I don't know if it's my sharpener, or if the pencil just came like that, but it's very annoying. I must have sharpened a good inch off last night, just trying to get something with which I could draw. I hope my other Col-erase pencils aren't like this.

Yay, submitted some more artwork. I'm trying to not have *too* much repetition between this and my other galleries (Elfwood, my private page) but if I want to have more than, oh, two or three pieces up here, that's just going to happen. I'm still trying to figure out the ins and outs of this place, anyway... (at the moment, for example, this journal is giving me problems)
