In addition to taking photos and drawing up stuff, I like to play around with music as well... I use a program called ACID, which uses loops to create songs. I'm not really a musician... more of a dj who arranges sounds in a pleasing manner. I do like to remix songs, and create new tracks as well. My music has appeared in the AC Comics movie NIGHTVEIL: WITCH WAR.

This track was created using dialog from the movie A DIRTY SHAME.
On Wednesday, the 26th of August, I will turn 40! It's hard to believe I'm turning 40! I feel like I'm 14 most of the time! My plans for the day are to go down to Disneyworld with a friend. I'm looking forward to that. After that, I'm going to get back to my comic book work, which I feel has been neglected somewhat of late! I get in the groove of doing eBay work, and card art, and commissions... and I don't seem to get my comics done. I've long had the dream of self-publishing a comic, and I want that to come true! In order to do it, I have to work at it!

BTW, I'm still doing $10 full-colour card art commissions! Just note me for details.

I have to say, I love ACEO / sketch cards... They are so much fun! My normal price for those commissions is $14.95, tho I usually do them for $10 each if the buyer is buying a lot of 'em at once. I know I'm not the best artist in the world, but I turn out a good card. I check out other people's work, and there are some who are better than me, some who are as good, and most who are not as good (but sometimes have a name to carry them). I feel that between $10-20 is a good price for these cards. If you can get more thru an eBay auction, more power to you! It does get to me when I see people posting their commission rates, and they are charging an arm & a leg for a card I wouldn't pay $5 for. Do they really get that? I know that art is subjective, so maybe what I don't like is someone else's favourite. I've always held to the idea that ACEO's are meant to be a quick piece of work, but that they should still look good... and that they should be affordable. By affordable, I think they should be an easy impulse buy, which means $20 or less... depending on if it's a card that was drawn up for the heck of it, or a commission. Oh well... it's just my opinion. "The world will go as it will, and not as you or I would have it."

I also have some quick digital commissions available. Check the journal here [link] for more info. A quick note: digital colouring is still a learning process for me, so it might take a little longer.

I'm outta here for now... time to get some work done!

Things like mecha & armor are difficult for me, but I'm willing to take them on.

Payment is due up front. My turnaround is usually pretty quick, tho if you are getting a lot of cards, it will take me longer to get them done. Just note me with what you want, and I'll get back to you with my PayPal address and a time estimate. I can also accept checks or money orders for those who don't have PayPal. This offer is good thru Memorial Day (Monday the 25th).

Any questions? Feel free to ask.

Have a Groovy Weekend!

Korey

Thursday was a "fun" day... across the street, our neighbor's tree fell down. I'd say this was a decent sized tree... it was close to their house, and fell away from the house, into the street. It fell over, blocking the entire street, a little bit into our yard - - basically, to the pole with all the electrical wires. No one was injured, and the only house damage was some siding from that neighbor's house - where wires were pulled out. The power went out tho, and the electrical surge took out several things in our house.

It took a while for the electric company to get out here, and get the street cleared. In this time tho, neighbors gathered... the neighbor whose tree fell was called, and the wife came to take care of it. At least it was pleasant outside that day. About five hours after the tree fell, power was restored.

We lost: a kitchen light fixtured (replaced), dsl modem (replaced), two televisions, a stereo system, a cd player, a dvd player, a microwave oven, and two power strips.... one of the power strips was an expensive one, which had our flat screen tv and assorted devices... the strip burned out, but it did it's job - - everything plugged into it was fine. We're now waiting for the go-ahead from the homeowner's insurance to get things replaced. The tv sets still have to be assessed, but that happens Monday.

Our neighbor has tree men coming on Monday to clear away the tree... when it was cleared by the JEA (electric company), they just cut it haphazardly, and stacked limbs in four different yards.

Well, as I said - - no one got hurt. At least we (the neighborhood men) aren't having to cut up the tree. Hopefully this is not the beginning of trees and tree limbs falling in the neighborhood. Last summer, about every third week, a large tree limb fell... this went on for several weeks. No one was ever hurt, but it was a pain to cut and clean up. I'd prefer not to have a repeat.

Interested in an ACEO Card Commission? Twelve bucks sets you up with a colour card! Note me for more info!

I was hoping that those of you who like my photography and/or my sketch cards could go check them out and maybe pick something up... I'd appreciate it. [link]

I got in a bind cos, when I had money, I spent it. This buyer is usually reliable, but I can see wanting to cut back on spending if/when you're worried about paying taxes.

Again... if you can pick something up - even just 1 card, it helps. I only drive down for a day... and this year, I wound up driving up to North Carolina on Saturday (more on that in a moment)...

In addition to a ton of Archie Comics and graphic novels, I met a lot of great artists from dA... and got sketches!

From I got a colour sketch of my hero, Atlas Parker...

From I got a sketch of Clyde Didit, one of my favourite characters of all time!

From I got my original character Gene, who appears in my "Friends Of Tyler" strip...

From I got my hero Lightning Strike...

I also got an Atlas Parker sketch from Shawn Surface, and a few sketches from non-dA artist "C".
Cyndi Lauper has long been an inspiration, hero, and goddess to me! I was 13 when she released "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", and she danced her way across the screen (thanks to MTV - which actually played music videos back then)! I knew that this was who wanted to be like. She was wild and untamed, and her music and voice are without peer! I've seen Cyndi in concert 4 times, and at the last tour I was amazed at how much energy she has running around that stage, and how she's able to sing so well while running around the stage! Check out her latest album, "Bring Ya To The Brink"... it's amazing!

This interview was shared in a fan email group I belong to. While the writer is credited, I do not know where it originally ran. Sorry.

**********************************************************

10 Questions For Cyndi Lauper
Lauper's Latest Is A Contender For This Year's Best Electronic/Dance Album
NEW YORK, Feb. 3, 2009 | by Tony Maciulis

Don’t call it a comeback. Cyndi Lauper has never left the scene.

What she has done in the 25 years since "She’s So Unusual" is experiment, stretch her skills, and thumb her nose at an industry that loves its talent delivered in easily definable boxes. Admittedly, that isn’t always a recipe for commercial success.

"Bring Ya to the Brink" is Lauper’s first album of original material in 12 years, and a world apart from the moody, raw covers on "The Body Acoustic" or "At Last." It’s full on, sweaty, gritty dance. Not the overly electronicized version one generally hears from pop divas of a certain age, but a kind of sound that says “retro” in a good way. "Into the Nightlife" will wear a groove into your iPod as you click play again and again, transported to the Limelight circa 1995. It’s infused with dry ice and beer stains, like the club scene before it was wrapped in velvet.

The album won critical praise and a Grammy nod.

Lauper’s a contender this Sunday in "Best Electronic/Dance Album," more than two decades after winning the Grammy for “Best New Artist” in 1985. What follows is an e-mail interview.

1. How do you go from covering "La Vie En Rose" to a full-on dance album?

I have been lucky enough as an artist to be able to shift gears easily and jump into various genres, so I don’t really see it as a stretch. I think Grace Jones did a great dance-ish cover of "La Vie En Rose" back in the day, so it’s one big circle of music…lol.

2. Was it tough to sell an album of original material to "the suits?"

No, I had made two records that were either covers of classics or reinterpretations of my own hits. We were all in the same mind set as to doing original material.

3. I read somewhere that you were particularly fond of Hat Full of Stars, because that album "was really you, uncensored." Have you felt censored on other projects?

I’ve had my share of creative arguments over the years, some I’ve met in the middle and others I’ve stood my ground. I like to collaborate but I don’t like to be dictated to. That’s what was fun with this latest project--for the most part it was a great sense of collaboration. I'm an artist, and any real artist is going to fight for their way.

4. You are famously supportive of gay rights. Does it disappoint you that President Obama has stopped short of supporting gay marriage?

He’s light years ahead of the Bush administration. You’ll see changes within minutes of his administration coming into power. The language on the White House website had GLBT inclusive language on it. I think he will be a great ally for the GBLT citizens of this country.

5. How has the music business changed since 1983?

There are so many changes. I just hope as the old model falls apart that the new business ideas can be embraced. There is a revolution underway on all fronts in regards to how music is made, manufactured, monetized, and collected. At the end of the day, no matter what the platform is or the sales model is, it still comes down to the artists and the talent. Great artists and music will always be at the root of it.

6. How has New York City changed?

The club scene could definitely use a smack in the ass. Having made a dance record, I spent a lot of time in the clubs and you can just see that the nightlife edge has been eroded somewhat. There are still a lot of great live musician spots but dance clubs have taken a hit. As for the actual city, it’s so expensive that these days I don’t know how any starving musician or producer could make it. Even the low rent places are high rent

7. There is no shortage of young artists, including Grammy nominee Katy Perry, who say your work has influenced them. Which current artists do you admire?

I am a big fan of Lady Gaga. I’ve spoken to her a few...

We had some "excitement" earlier this week - - our Christmas Tree fell down, for no reason we can determine. No one was hurt, and only some ornaments were broken. The sad thing about the ornaments is that some of them belonged to Grandma, and dated back to the 40's & 50's. (One is from the 1930's, I think.) However, they are only things, and we still have more ornaments. I have my good memories of decorating Grandma's tree and spending time with her! Mom and Dad reminded me that we had a tree fall over when I was little - about four or five. We had been out and came home to a downed tree. Apparently I was convinced that Santa wouldn't visit us because of it. Funny how our minds work when we're little. The tree is back up and re-decorated. It gave Mom and I the excuse to go buy some more ornaments (like anything really stops us!).

Happy Holidays

I've listed more photos into my Clearance Sale on Hope I Win. Check them out at: [link]

Of course, I'm not sure why I even bothered. I can find no evidence that people are even going to the site to look at these photos! It's a shame because it means people are missing out on a good deal!

I try to run the Clearance Sale at least once a year - - usually in the fall thru the end of the year. I do this because I don't like to carry stock over into a new year, but I also hate the idea of destroying unsold photos. Why am I listing on Hope I Win? It's simple! eBay's high (and rising) fees are driving me away from their site. I know the economy is not in good shape, and people aren't buying as much... but sales have dropped to the point where I cannot afford to continue on eBay. I have been able to remain on eBay due to the generosity of my family, who want me to be able to ride things out. Unfortunately, I don't know right now if a given month will be my last month on eBay. Without eBay, I don't stand a chance. If you buy off of eBay regularly, you should know that alternate auction sites might very well save you some money. Following a seller you normally buy from should not be a problem.

On Hope I Win I have listed my clearance sale photos for $4.25 - the lowest I have ever been able to offer them for! If I have to list the sale on eBay, the price will go up to at least $5.50, tho $6 is more than likely. This is to off-set eBay's high selling fees. I no longer charge for First Class Shipping, and charge a minimal amount for Priority or International shipping.

Anyway, I hope you check out my listing at Hope I Win. I also hope this economy improves soon... Economies are cyclical, and we're in the downturn... it's frustrating for everyone! Thanks for listening to me rant and whine about things a bit!

Take care!

[link]

Since my birthday, or even a little before, I've been majorly depressed. So depressed that I'm back to that feeling of getting out of bed and getting dressed is a major accomplishment. I'm doing my best not to let it get the better of me. I've been working, being creative, etc... I also understand the why's of my depression right now, and I'm trying to address those issues.

One of the issues is my career. Sales have been horrible since April. While I've been getting some sales outside of eBay from one of my regular buyers, all other non-eBay sources have brought nothing but work with no rewards. As far as I can tell, no one even looks at my auctions on Hope I Win. (Their loss - I'm having a clearance sale there with my lowest prices ever on photos! Email me for the link.)

I've been working on my comics, hoping to self-publish. BUT, in all honesty that's being done for the Love Of Comics. I hope to break even and get some money to the artists who have helped out with my comic book ventures. I do not expect to make a living at this.

With eBay sales pretty much played out, I'm toying again with the idea of leaving photography behind. I never intended for it to be a career, to be honest. I started to have reference photos for my drawing, and because I was good at it, I kept on. I managed to build a good little business for myself - - all with the money I had in my pocket at the time I started! I'm trying to think about what I want to do next tho.

I'm looking into the possibility of going back to school, probably for graphic design. I'd like to write some more. I'd like to find other ways in which being creative can pay the bills. I'm not sure what answers I'll find.

I ran this bit of advice on an art board and thought I would share it here...

********************************

I buy commissions as well as do them, and have my horror stories (including the artist who took 8 months with little communication to complete the most boring piece of art ever [no approval scans were sent during the entire process], promised me a refund, and never sent said refund when I returned the art - - this is the only time I've had to ask for a refund. I also notice that this artist has recently started referring to himself by another screen name... ) Sorry for that rant... I will offer some advice to artists who offer commissions...

1. Communication is key! Answer your emails! If life throws you a curve, send an email out to your clients. Most people will put up with delays as long as you let them know what's going on. Silence = loss of sales!

2. Do the work in a timely manner. My turnaround time, based on a single card, is within 48 hours. If it takes longer, either I'm doing a lot of cards for the buyer, or the buyer is slow to respond when I send approval scans. Unless you work for DC, Marvel, Archie, or Dark Horse, producing a monthly book, there is no real reason why you cannot get art completed in 2 to 6 weeks. If it takes you longer, be sure to tell your buyer up-front, and be prepared to accept payment in installments.

3. Send approval scans - especially at the pencil stage. If you are unclear as to what your client wants, ask questions. Make sure your client is satisfied with the work. They will often buy from you again if you do.

4. Deliver what you promise. Don't promise a buyer that you will do such-and-such, and then back down from it when the time comes. If the subject matter is new to you and you're willing to give it a shot but are unsure of the outcome, let your buyer know. Be willing to work with the buyer to give what he/she wants, but also ask if after a couple of unsuccessful tries, if something else can be done. Two examples: I do not draw horror and/or zombies. I've had to turn down work because I knew I could not do the material justice. I like beefcake/erotic/sexy guys... some artists will do this, some won't. Some have limits. There have been a few misses, but in most cases, the artist tried for me.

5. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. If you're drawing nudity, be prepared to draw women and men. This has nothing to do with sexual preferences: everyone knows what sexy is for either gender, especially when your buyer is telling you what sexy is. I've encountered gay and straight male artists who complained about not wanting to draw naked women or men. I've always advised: either draw both, or don't draw any nudes.

6. If you have to turn down a commission, for whatever reason, be polite to the buyer. Just cos the buyer's thing isn't your thing is no reason to make that person feel bad. Also - be flexible... you might still get a sale! I don't just want "beefcake" art when I"m buying - - I want all kinds of art! I have so many ideas in my head... there's work from me for a lot of people (as long as my budget holds out!).

7. Remember: buyers talk. We're human, and we all screw up - - on both sides! Be polite and professional - even if someone is being rude with you. If something isn't right, try to make it right - - even if you can't make it right, sometimes the effort goes a long way. Treating buyers badly is bad for business. And buyers talk. I've heard all kinds of horror stories about artists, and have shared a few.

8. If you need help in learning customer service, go take a retail job! I learned so much about customer service from working retail, and it all applies to selling my work online! If you just don't like dealing with customers, you might consider hiring an agent/business manager to help.

My final word here: I'm humbled whenever somebody wants my work. Getting paid to do what I want is awesome! However, this does not make me any better than anyone else! I always remember: without buyers, I don't have a job!

Tho, I have gotten a little bit of writing done as well, so I guess that's good.

That's about it. I'm off....

The Summer 2008 Issue of the Korok Studios Beefcake Portfolio is out! YAY!

This is the first issue. It features 3 models - Al, Dallas, and Patrick, with about half the photos being of Al. It has 86 pages in b&w. The cost is $16.50 and is available thru [link]

[link]

For those who don't know, LuLu is a print on demand publisher. I just got my copy of the book today, and I think it turned out well! I'm happy with the quality. The only drawback: I couldn't figure out how to get one of my photos on the cover! Sorry about that. Hopefully future books will have my photos.

I am planning the second issue now, and will also be working on a colour book featuring Eric.

Be sure to check this book out! I'll keep you posted on future issues!

Korey
[link]

Yep. Not a misprint. I'm going to be leaving eBay. This change will happen by mid-July. It makes me sad. I've been with eBay for a looooong time! At least 10 years now. Their recent changes have made eBay a very seller unfriendly place. Combine that with our deteriorating economy, and I'm losing money. I will be listing auctions this week, and a few next week as well... but after that, no more. Check me out there while you can: [link]

However, I will be moving to a new site... my photography can now be found at eBid - - [link] The fees are better here, and I hope to make a go of it until such a time that I can return to eBay.

Interested parties can also check [link] for more info about my beefcake photography.

My ACEO Art Cards can be found at Comic Art Community... [link]

That's all the news I've got for now.

Take it easy!
