You take a Vintage Box camera, and take photos through the view finder with your digital camera.
And you end up with some shots like these:




Pretty cool huh? I love the colours and grim on the viewfinders. Adds to that vintage look. Sure you can fake it with various filters etc, but where's the fun in that?

So I did some very brief hunting, and found a Coronet Ambassador at my local antique shop. Cost $35, and its in fairly good condition. Well, good enough for TTV at least.

All I need to do now is sort out a rigging system for it, so that its easier for me to set my camera up to take some shots.

And no, I'm not one of them.

I'm kinda pissy about that. Especially since one of the finalists of the portraiture section is the crappiest picture ever. The judge must not have had glasses on when he looked at it. It looks like a spur of the moment shot in the photographers attic with no thought to composition at all.

So the journal skin I'm using kinda sums up what I'd like to send to the judges over at Canon. All I need is a willing assassin. Maybe I should see what I can find on google...

The only good that has come out of this competition is that I've learnt to try different techniques and to experiment using props.

So once I'm out of this anti-photography funk, I'll probably look at taking more photos.

Hey folks!

Well I'm at the final stages of preparing my submissions for the competition.

So far I've settled on these:

Portrait:


Close Up:


Low Light:


Not 100% sure about the low-light one as yet. I might go with a slightly 'brighter' version.

Whilst there is five briefs in total, I can't do one of them (Bokeh) due to my crappy camera and as it turns out crappier film camera.

The other brief 'Splat' or liquid in motion is a maybe at this stage. Since I'm working during the day, the natural light is gone by the time I finish work. But I might have a crack at it in the weekend (depending on the weather).

Thanks everyone for your support, positive comments/critiques, fav's, and modelling support. Its greatly appreciated.

My aim for this competition is to be nominated as a finalist. If I get that far, I'll be happy. Of course I'll be even more stoked if I win one of the briefs. :D

I just found my Mum's old film camera and tried using it for Bokeh. And it freaking works! My some-what expensive digital camera can't do it (stupid lens), but my Mum's old not-very-high-end film camera does it! Typical isn't it?
And for those interested, its a Chinon Genesis. All I need to do now is track down a battery for it...

I'm looking for models/guinea pigs for the following briefs:

Splat - Liquid in motion. In other words, throwing paint on you whilst I take photos...

Spectacles - Portrait using goofy looking paper glasses.

Not too much has been happening in my artistic world.

I plan to do another 'lovey-dovey' photo session with some friends of mine at some stage. Probably when its closer to summer. Its warming up a bit with spring, but not enough just yet.

I'm still fooling around in Photoshop. Edited an image of my friends dressed in goth with corpse paint on from a shoot ages ago. Might upload it onto here.

And I plan to look at revisiting some of my older photos and giving them a once-over now that I have improved my skills and have some better software.

I should also take some photos of the two pieces I did using Denim instead of canvas. They're quite cool. :)

Was nice to recharge my batteries by spending whole days in my pyjama's lol.
Did some travelling, but didn't do as much scouting and exploring as I planned (in fact I did none). Its surprising how quick two weeks can go.

I ended up in Timaru for a 21st, so spent lunch down at the beach/wharf/commercial fishing area. Took some shots of the beach and some mountains. But being the lazy sod that I am, I haven't looked at them properly yet. So there might be some new photos coming soon, or maybe not.

Two of my closest friends are got engaged, so I hope to take some lovely photos of them to turn into a fantastic engagement/wedding present. Seems the art that I give away/commission turns out better than the stuff I do for myself. Go figure.

Anyways, better get back to it.

But finally I'm secure enough in my job that I can confidently take a holiday and know that my job will still be there when I get back.

So from next week I'll be on holiday for two weeks.

What will I do for those two weeks of freedom? Well I plan to take a heap of photos of my surrounding city.

So keep an eye on my account, cos there is bound to be some new work coming through. And it might not all be photographs. I've got a few ideas for other art projects that I have wanted to try. So should be fun. :)

Wow!

What a highly intelligent, well spoken and interesting man. He was very thought provoking and challenging in what he had to say. Squizm wanted to go too, but couldn't make it so I said I would fill her in later. So here it is for one and all, the finer points of what he had to say.

* Have your art show your personality. If your art is truly good, it will be recognised as yours. Like a famous singer; you know who it is after they sing two words.

* Listen to your instinct. If you think you've seen a similar shot or style, take a different shot. Good "singers" are the ones who sing like themselves.

* Never try to please anyone else. Believe in your own judgement. Learn to accept comments etc gracefully, but ultimately ignore them. Art should be about you, not anyone else.

He is fascinating. He doesn't enter competitions or judges them because he thinks that art is too subjective. You could be in one year and out the next.

More pictures have been added. Been having fun with my new camera. Taking it with me as often as possible on the off-chance I find that elusive shot. Been going on random walks to find unusual places to take photos. Found some interesting locations to go back to at a later date.

Work has been wicked. Getting the chance to flex my Photoshop/Design skills. Just got to keep on working at it. Nothing like practice.

Finding inspiration in music again. Discovered AC/DC (ok, I knew they existed for years, just never listened to them) and found that I like old AC/DC (Bon Scott era) over new AC/DC (Brian Johnson era).

Oh and I'm still loving Demon Hunter's Storm the Gates of Hell. By far their best album. So many great songs. Even made a fan art image and used it at church as a wallpaper on Sunday morning. It got a knee jerk reaction (one that I was expecting), but once I explained the concept behind the song, people understood it. And the only criticism was the use of the word shed. Some people are so determined to criticise that they'll come up with anything...

Anyways, its late and I have a bed calling me.

It should be alot of fun. I'll be working the phones and helping customers/advertisers of the site work the site and place ad's etc. So go check out the site if you're from NZ.

Leaving after all that time means a couple of things:
1) I get paid out for leave not taken.
2) I got a nice parting gift of $125 for a camera shop.

Which means I finally get to buy myself a semi-professional digital camera! I seriously cant wait. I even brought a $80 book on taking digital photos so I can learn and try out some cool techniques.

So keep an eye out for a huge increase in submissions once I get the camera and get the hang of it. :)

Back from Easter Camp. I managed to sell two shirts whilst there. Not as many as I would have liked, but thats all good. Go to my other site [link] over the next week or so, cos I'm uploading pretty much every design I can.

Although I didnt sell all my shirts, I got requests for some designs. Plus I should be in discussions with a youth group later this week about designing some tshirts for them, so fingers crossed there. I'm going to experiment in some darker designs so there may not be a whole lot of submissons going on here.
