it's opening night. but i'll write about that at some other time. i got this from caitlin awhile back. yay, surveys!

Eight things about me:

1. i opened my first show tonight. it went very well
2. i am a blatant contradiction of humility and conceit. it depends on the day.
3. sometimes it takes me anywhere from a couple hours to a couple months to figure out my feelings. until then, i don't know what i want or why i act the way i do.
4. i love star trek. it's my dad's fault. and i'm so thankful for it.
5. i'm becoming more and more like my production advisor every day (this started before she even became my production advisor). like, i wore an open trenchcoat tonight and heels and my hair is similar to hers and it was just weird...because i did it because i wanted to, haha.
6. i think i'm actually terrified of falling in love, even though i'm a hopeless romantic.
7.when i'm sad, there are two musicals i go to: little shop of horrors and hello, dolly! (the first is campy, the other is cheesy. go figure).
8. i have too much pride for my own good.

The Rules:

1. Post these rules.
2. Each tagged person must post 8 things about their self on their journal.
3. At the end, you have to choose and tag 8 people and post their icons on the same journal.
4. Go to their pages and send a message saying you tagged them.
5. No tag-backs.

I TAG: whoever wants to do this. i don't care

1. O.o at the 47 deviations since the last time i logged on

2. please keep in mind i'm sleepy. the only day i didn't work this week was Christmas. and it kinda went down the drain starting a bit on thursday not that it's been a horrible week...but it's left me exhausted...plus i'm being bad to myself and not going to bed early cause i want to see people that i don't get to see all the time while i'm home for break. i'll be lucky if i don't make myself sick. the only reason i'm staying up to write this is because i want to do write it when it's freshest in my mind.

3. i want to direct sweeney todd someday.

i saw the movie tonight it was highly anticipated, although i worried about the effect of johnny depp and helena(?) bonham carter's mediocrity at singing (sorry to fans of them, but really, they're not that great at it---they're great at straight-acting ).

so, here are my thoughts.

overall, i was okay with it. which i kinda expected. the people i was with absolutely adored it. one of them had been in a production of it and had seen it onstage once, i think? plus, she's also a theatre major. one had only heard what i made him listen to of the soundtrack, and the other two had just heard the hype about it, one of them hearing a lot of it from me

there were just things in it that i didn't feel were...how i would've done it.

johnny depp and helena bonham carter both looked the part. but alan rickman and timothy spall both totally filled their roles. quite well. there were a couple scenes where i felt that tim burton got everything he could and wanted to out of depp and carter, but there were some scenes where i just thought "you know, i know he's a higher caliber actor than this...he can fill this role so much better."

i also felt that the singing was quiet. quiet, and/or shy. this is a musical filled with passion. sweeney's crimes are driven by his passion. his passion drives him mad, because he feels so much grief for all he's lost. he's not concentrating on pitch. he's not afraid to feel convictions about how we all deserve to die. it doesn't have to sound pretty when you're talking about how in the world there's a great black pit filled with people who are filled with shit and how the vermin of the world inhabit it. there were some songs that i was okay with him singing in the way he did, simply because there were songs where they were supposed to be quiet and pretty. such as when he sings about "a barber and his wife. and she was beautiful..." that worked.

i felt that johnny did his best singing performance on "pretty women" tho. that was wonderful, i felt, especially right along with his actions and the harmonizing with alan rickman. awesome.

tim burton proved to be great at suspense. times when sweeney was shaving people (the judge the first time, in particular comes to mind), you just kept going "omg! he's going to---oh no, he didn't. ooh! ooh! he's going to---aw, damn it, wrong again!" you're on the edge of your seat just waiting for sweeney to slit their throats.

the costuming and the world were all awesome. no lie about that. a very real world was created.

although, i must admit that some of the stylized-ness kind of turned me off. particularly with the blood. i can understand tim burton's repetition of the blood and everything, but i didn't like it. credit this to karen kessler's love of pain and gore or not, but i felt that the fact that the blood looked like red acrylic paint kind of took away from the fact that sweeney had just killed someone. my friend kristin (the other theatre major in the group) pointed out that it did take away from it so that you weren't nearly as disgusted that he had just killed someone in the way he did. it made it easier to stomach.

i felt he should've worked more with the end. we don't know what happens to anthony and johanna. and we should, as audience members, at least have an idea as to what happened has opposed to johanna just cowering in the fancy chair

"by the sea" was a great sequence. i wanted helena bonham carter to let loose more so she wasn't trying to sound so dainty and pretty, but it was still well done. especially with sweeney's reluctance in wooing her. it was hilarious. hee....

but this also means that i'll be in pendleton for three weeks. if i stay with my dad the whole time, there is a down side---i have no wireless( did mooch off of the neighbors' wireless, but it stopped working about two weeks before my summer break ended). i have dial-up. and a bad computer screen(it's a bit dark and the internet images sometimes show up a bit blurry). so i won't be checking deviations the whole time i'm home unless i stay with my mom and she lets me have cable access on my lappy. or her(my dad's) lappy. whatever. i can check comments and journals and stuff.

yeah, yeah, i know, two shows in two days

i was too interested in edumacating in the ways of garfield halloweens and the great pumpkin to worry about a review last night, hehe.

*theatre snob alert*

one thing that they tell us as directors is that when you're watching a show or watching actors in general, you have to look at what they can do, and not judge them all based on professional standards. that's how high school drama teachers can see a professional show and think it's awesome but still be proud of their high schoolers (not saying high schoolers aren't good actors...but they really haven't had time to develop a process or anything ).

this was something i had to take into mind last night. rocky was performed at a community theatre. i knew muncie had a community theatre...but i didn't know that they had two! i was pleasantly surprised to see that not only do they have a proscenium theatre (the muncie civic), but they also have a studio theatre (the main street studio theatre), which was where it was performed last night.

so this was a community production. keep this in mind.

frankenfurter was fantastic. a couple of his outfits were...neeeeeh, but in general he was great. he didn't look like tim curry, but he had the talent to pull off frankenfurter, so yeah

brad was amazing. i happen to know him personally, but i didn't know that he was in this particular show, and i'd never actually seen him perform--i'd just had some classes with him. and he was great. his vocal performance was outstanding. his acting could've used a little work, but his vocal performance was great.

riff raff and the neckless investigator were pretty good too. it was a huge surprise when the neckless investigator came back out and had taken out his hair from under his hat...he had a lot to hide up there!! haha.

the girls( meaning columbia, magenta and janet)...erm...to tell the truth, i really didn't care for them. columbia had the movie columbia's signature squeaky nasally voice down, but she didn't enunciate nearly enough to let the audience know what she was saying. and when she was singing, she had what and and i like to call a moment worthy of new orleans (the three of us watched a bunch of "talent acts" in new orleans a few years ago and they were AWFUL. anything worthy of new orleans is horrid indeed). in particular with her, i didn't see enough discovery. see, even with fun shows such as rocky horror, actors must still have a vision of themselves in the play and they need to experience things with their character. it kind of ruins the illusion you're trying to create or the humor you're trying to culture if things just come out of nowhere---such as telling frankenfurter that she's had it up to here and that she loved him. janet has never had voice lessons in her life. she has great boobs, no lie. but she's never had voice lessons. which isn't necessarily a bad thing, except that she went from belting in this loud voice when she was within her belting range to this quiet little mousy head voice when she crossed her break, and the audience could barely hear her when she had the head voice going. commented, and i quite agree with him, that this could have been combated on all the girls' parts if they had said some of the harder things to sing in a dramatic voice. i've seen and heard many actors do this to cover up vocal imperfections and it works pretty well for the most part, along with adding a little something to the song.

the director seemed as though they were pretty consumed with sexing up rocky horror, and there's nothing wrong with sexing it up more...as long as you give some variety and really make it sexed-up as opposed to half-assing it. there was a lot of repitition, su...

so, on a whim earlier today, and i decided to go to the traveling tour of peter pan.

and it was glorious.

peter was a bit nasally, but if you really think about it, how many other ways are there to make a girl sound like a boy? she was a really awesome singer...for those of you from pendleton, she reminded me a lot of casey jamerson (you can find her stuff on myspace if you're not familiar with her voice ) and omg, she did this thing where she spun as she was lifted into the air...omgdrool. it was amazing. *theatregasm* the fact that she was able to sing as well as she did while being up in the air with that harness denotes amazing talent to me. other than the nasalness, i was quite impressed.

hook was really awesome. no lie. and the song "mysterious lady"...*giggles* it's amazing. and that song further shows how awesome the girl who played peter was...because this show showed off her range.

and they had some lines that adults could really appreciate.

"tell us the end of cinderella!"
"...and they lived happily ever after!"
"tell us the end of sleeping beauty!"
"...and they all lived happily ever after!"
"tell us the end of hamlet!"
"uuuuuh..."

beehehehehe...

i love how the whole show was structured around children...because that's what the show is about! it had really convenient breaks (good for children) and audience participation. we had to clap to bring tink back to life and crow with peter and wendy. i felt like a little kid again...in a good way physical comedy was utilized in a very good way(especially for children)

i love how every different version of peter pan i've seen smee is different. his character can be interpreted in so many different ways. i've seen him from "OMG*ORGASM*IT'SSMEE!!" to "ew, it's smee..." in this version he was like hook's idiot younger brother with maternal tendencies...and he kissed hook's boo boo. *giggles*

tiger lilly was adorable. and such a dancer.

for one to truly appreciate comedia del'arte (or however you spell it)...particularly modern comedia del'arte, one must be in a certain mood.

for those of you that don't know, comedia del'arte is scooby doo meets looney tunes, and they all hang out with the three stooges and have afternoon tea with a porn, but of course, this all takes place in upper-middle or upper class society back in the 1600's (typically) and there are tons of stock characters(stock characters are certain types of characters, such as the trickster, the fool, the wise man, the hussy, etc...) and masks.

anyway...this was a style created back...actually in the time of the ancient greeks. of course, it has classed up since the time of the greeks, because the ancient greeks version of comedy was more schtick than anything else (what with the men in the show walking around and beating each other with the ginormous phalli attached to the front of their costumes)

jonathan beckner, the movement guy in our theatre department (who also produces theatrical masks), decided to do the three cuckolds with a ton of modern influences. these influences were techno, disco balls, bill clinton, a charlie brown Christmas, among other things.

there were some moments that were genuinely funny, but had i not woken up an hour previous to going, i prolly would've found this show hilarious.

the set was interesting. no lie.

and the show was particularly theatrical, what with the acknowledgements of the somewhat minimal set and characters that made a big show of making set adjustments.

not a standing ovation, but not a bad show

funnily enough, the guy who wrote the music for this particular musical (which i almost assistant-directed) also wrote the music for the musical that i am currently assistant directing. hee.

fun music.

plot holes. *shrug* this was so much about shock value that plot holes didn't matter. not that that's a bad thing---it's just that it wasn't top priority.

good actors. good singers.

my friend matt was eddie. and he was AWESOME.

the director didn't work too well with some moments, because there were moments where the actors were standing there and it was not active at all, which really sucked for me, being a directing major (that being one of my two majors )...although whenever black did it, i didn't have tooooooo much of a problem...because jonathan jensen (the guy playing black) is VERY pretty to look at...and he has a pretty voice...but mainly he's pretty...it's not necessarily that he was a bad actor, it was just that he was standing there, when it seemed very much like he was very stiff with that direction and wanted to walk or use his arms, and it would've been so much better had he bad allowed to do that.

i really want to read the poem this is based off of now.

craig underwood's orgasm when queenie touched him was one of the most awesome things in the show.

set was a little busy, but still cool. although, i felt horrible for the kid who had to lay under the bed so that it could move.

the lesbian was my favorite character. no lie. eddie came in at a close second.

sorry this is so scattered and stuff...i did a lot of running around and hanging out and stuff after the show...and i'm getting ready to go to bed after i clean up the remnants of my room...more like putting gaming systems back up, but whatevs

so, it wasn't AMAZING, but it was pretty good.

i felt like adding another entry not that these things aren't worth reviewing, it's just that

1. i'm a theatre major. theatre is my art, although choir was an art for me in high school

2. i was never in band. i played flute for about a year because (funny story), my brother thought i should be in band, so he told me that they didn't have choir in middle school, so i took up flute so that i could join band and still have some sort of connection to music. then my instructor got fired and i found out there was choir...so yeah...

aaaaaanyways.

all four choirs did a grood job. the mc, while doing a spectacular job, was also a TOTAL HOTTIE with whom i'm totally in love.

this year's singsation, was possibly the cheesiest thing i've ever done. i think, personally, it was a smart move on dreher's part. but the finale...omg, when the flag dropped and they passed out flags and everyone stood up, i must confess that and i were giggling our faces off.

band concert was purty grood the only thing i could really see wrong was when they kept getting off tempo during the phantom medley. and i must confess, it was really difficult for me to sit through part of the wicked medley, no lie. julie's scream during the phantom medley was amazing. eeehehe.

CRIKEY! (i'm watching whose line...ryan stiles is attacking a gopher...ahahaha...)

anyway, tis all.

so, my mom said something to me earlier last week, while i was in the midst of moving out of my dorm and worrying about finals, about how she got three tickets to lion king at the aronoff center in cincinnati, and how she didn't know when i would be getting out of school when she got the tickets and...yeah. three tickets is not enough for my family at home at the moment, considering when i'm not at school i live with both of my parents and my sister. mom ended up having things to do today, so i get home from my first year at college to find out i'm going to go see the lion king the next day. schweet!

so, that was a big portion of my day (besides driving to and from cincinnati ).

i thought it a bit brechtian to tell the truth. O.O not that that's a bad thing, but it's DISNEY. by this being brechtian it's like...thought-provoking. but then again, it's the lion king but it's brechtian in the sense that in the writing and with the costumes, it makes no bones about the fact that it's a play. there was actually a line from zazu where he's like "THIS WASN'T IN THE CARTOON!!!" it was cute.

but very theatrical. the very beginning was impressive, what with rafiki appearing on the stage to start singing "the circle of life" and all of the animals coming from everywhere. the boxes, if you looked up, contained a gazelle each. and then a rhino came down one aisle while elephants came down another aisle. i was by the aisle with the elephants and the costumes for the elephants were life-size. twas like really cool. a lot of the costumes doubled as puppets as well. there was this one really REALLY cool cheetah costume, where it was this girl, and her butt was the butt of the cheetah, and she had the hind legs attached to her own so whenever she walked the cheetah's back legs walked, and she had arm extensions so that she could move the front legs and she had this thing attached to her head, so that whenever she moved her head, the cheetah's head would move! and the zazu puppet (which was operated entirely by the actor) was incredibly animated for a puppet. it was able to blink and flap its wings and talk and all sorts of things. cooooooooool stuff.

i think, by far, the coolest effect of the whole show was when mufasa died. they flew him out a bit so that it looked like he was climbing the walls of the gorge, and when scar pushed him, he was flown away and down and strobe lights went off. it was like, the most amazing thing ever, cause the strobe lights caused it to look like it was happening in slow motion.

and dude, if you want me to talk more about it, you gotta like, email me or call me or something cause i'm not typing anymore about it in here, considering this journal is pretty long and i haven't even begun to talk about everything they did. and if you DOOOOOO decide to talk to me about it, you should so totally ask me about the giraffe. so yeah. it was pretty cool.

i'm just still deciding whether or not i liked it being so theatrical. but when you think about it, it couldn't have really been done any other way. *shrugs*

the only thing i noticed wrong was the chorus had trouble blending in the beginning. that, my friends, is my only beef with this whole production. seriously.

the talent was like, omg. i was sitting next to a gay man who proclaimed himself straight at the sight of one of the dancers (he's a dance major, so that makes sense ). the guy who played joseph would prolly have been norbert leo butz's understudy in wicked had he auditioned for the role, cause they sounded almost exactly alike...and norbert leo butz is amazing, so yeah, he was amazing. there was one time he seriously gave me goosebumps when he hit a note. the narrator gave me goosebumps as well. she belted some of the most amazing stuff ever.

and andrew lloyd webber must be totally sadistic to have written the narrator's part in "jacob and sons" she did really well, but still, a.l.w. was a sadistic...person.

the set was amazeringerific. nuff said.

theatre is a collaborative art. and there was collaborating to be had. the lights and the costumes and the choreography met up PERFECTLY.

my dance major friend next to me was pretty much orgasming every time they had a dance break. it was pretty awesome.

and the lighting design. oh, the lighting design! it was beautiful!! and the utilization of joseph's coat at the end with the lights and omg *creams* twas that amazing.

i leapt from my seat at the end and a high-pitched scream was emitted from my lips. this is a special scream i've only heard come from myself on two other occasions in my LIFE. so yeah. YAY!

i have to write a paper about this show, so i'm prolly going to put some of my thoughts about it in here, although the paper's not going to be a review: it's going to be a critique. whee!

well, i must say i was quite pleased. there was tons of talent in this show, although i must say that i thought hope was a bit off on her vocals and stuff :/.

the dancing/choreography was pretty awesome, although there was one part during "don't be the bunny" where there were things going on on opposite sides of the stage and i thought there was too much going on and i couldn't pay attention to all of it.

the set was awesome, and the lighting = AMAZING! costuming was also quite awesome.

this musical was quite absurdist according to what i've been studying in my aesthetics class. it made no effort to get the audience lost in the play: it was a play and it proclaimed itself as just that. also, it didn't really have a point, although i was wondering around in circles of thought trying to figure out what it all meant. the point of absurdist theatre is to make the audience wonder what the point is. i can't say too much else without giving it away if you ever intend to see it.

it also had brechtian undertones. brecht, a playwright who created epic theatre, went against everything the theatre of cruelty stood for. the theatre of cruelty is basically when you watch something and it produces a strong emotion, and you get caught up in it and you can't express what you're feeling and thinking through words, because it's that violent and powerful. brecht didn't think you should get too emotionally involved. he thought that if you got too emotionally invested in a show that you wouldn't think about it and take the message home with you. therefore he wrote in things and directed his plays in such a way that you couldn't get too emotionally attached. such was the way in this play. it was funny, and funny in places to make sure you didn't get too emotional. such as a certain key character's death and his last words: they were made comedic and therefore you couldn't really feel anything about his death, but you could think about it.

and with that, i think i shall delve into my own thoughts and possibly see this show again. two thumbs up and a standing ovation from me!

last night, a play the likes of which pendleton heights hasn't seen in years took place on the stage i call home. death takes a holiday, although darkly funny at parts, was not the comedy that normally takes place on the ph stage, but rather, it was a deep, pensive DRAMATIC play, something that jacque would've never picked, but it was amazing.

i would honestly like to get myself a copy of this play and analyze it for fun. truly, i thought it was that beautiful. and then and i could talk and/or debate about it, mwahahaha.

papa shuck did a GREAT job on the set (especially knowing that he practically built the thing by himself in approximately three weeks because of mr. bernet leaving everyone in the middle of production).

exceptional actors last night were (mama)mia (gratzia), nick (the duke), cory (the baron) and shuck (death/prince sirki). i especially loved the difference between shuck's voices between being death and being human. it made me happy

i didn't even realize that shuck might've had trouble dressing for his change within that scene, so i must give kudos to his dresser a.k.a. the BESTEST TECHIE EVER!

on a personal note, being there last night almost felt like it was my senior night all over again and i realized how much i miss being up there with everyone. i really do think i'm going to audition for stuff starting next year. jacque did say that the first shows are the hardest to watch because you're not used to being in the audience...i really is weird to leave the auditorium to wait for everyone to come back from backstage, to not be the one in steak n shake with the weird make-up that the waitress makes fun of (that was cory this time...his make-up was pretty awesome )

tis almost wednesday of my spring break. approximately the halfway point. i'm getting emotionally ready to go back to school, although i'm still liking being home. this is better than living out of a suitcase for three weeks in my own house like Christmas break. i found tonight that i need to work on my skills at grilling steak. of course, this was only my first time doing it completely by myself, plus trying to get my sister to cooperate with me because i was supposed to be teaching her to cook. i think if i were doing it by myself and the door didn't keep messing up, they would've turned out better.

i got to see 300. *drools* omg amazing. an AWESOMETASTIC friend of mine took me to it and paid for my ticket and everything. to that friend and to that friend.

i'm working on a paper for my directing class currently, that is a full analysis of the play bug by tracy letts. it's going to come out as a movie, so hopefully i'll get to see it in theaters to see what that director's take on it was. this paper could end up being fifty pages long. O.O
saturday i'm going to see my high school's production of death takes a holiday. they've had poor continuity with directors and td's (the original director of the play was also the td and he left midway through the year) and so they got our old director to come back and direct it and papa shuck, my friend alex's dad who used to do scenic design at beef and boards, came back to be the td. and they wouldn't let me help put the set together cause i'm not in high school anymore. and they open on thursday and they weren't done as of yesterday when i was at the school. it looks pretty awesome tho, so i think they'll pull through okay. it's already better than the last show's set that i saw there, so they're on the right track with papa shuck (YAY PAPA SHUCK!) full review of the play will come when i get around to getting on da to write it, because i'll be out all night saturday...well, not all night, but i prolly won't get on da considering i'll need to get up the next morning for church and packing to go back to school ().

and i haven't had a chance to visit my happy place. hopefully the weather is nice tomorrow so i can.

to be frank and to the point, this was awesomeness. vicki lawrence, as her bio stated, is very feminist, and made a lot of womanly jokes (such as going to the gyno, or as she called it, her obi won kenobi, heh). and then she left the stage for about five minutes and changed into her most famous character, mama, from mama's family. i was like, fifteen feet away from her when she entered. it was great.

as vicki and as mama she sang and danced. as vicki, she made fun of mama and of course, carol burnett.

all in all, it was really fun and funny.

as one would think from the title, this is indeed a show that makes fun of musicals.

note from the director: "contrary to popular belief, The Musical of Musicals - The Musical! is NOT a dumb and goofy show. it is a VERY dumb and goofy show, or rather FIVE different shows in five distinct and famous styles. the shows you are about to see will simultaneously mock and praise the subject musical theatre loves most --- itself."

methinks that was a very good summary of the show.

i give allowances for this show considering the directors are students directing THEIR FIRST SHOWS EVER and the actors aren't always the cream of the crop, but they're still very good.

the five shows within the show are as follows:

corn! (in the style of rodgers and hammerstein): although the characters acted like they were in oklahoma! they also made plenty of carousel, state fair, flower drum song, king and i and south pacific jokes.

a little complex (in the style of stephen sondheim): this was done mainly in the style of sweeney todd (which i haven't seen but i'm DYING to see), but they also made lots of references to something funny happened on the way to the forum, a little night music, company and especially into the woods.

dear abby! (in the style of jerry herman): omg. this part made me very happy (as it should've considering it was the finale to the first act). it made fun of hello, dolly! and mame simultaneously with splashes of la cage aux falles (which i haven't seen yet, but considering i've seen the birdcage, which stems from that, i have a good enough idea of where it comes from). they basically made fun of how the main character came out, did nothing, but was still proclaimed fabulous (the pianist, who was also narrating gave the audience cues when to applaud...ahahaha...)

aspects of junita (in the style of andrew lloyd webber): this one also made me happy. for the most part, this one made fun of evita, the phantom of the opera and cats, although it made plenty of pokes at joseph and the technicolor dreamcoat, Jesus Christ: superstar, aspects of love, and several others. they also made fun of how andrew lloyd webber uses the same songs over and over and over and over again ("i've heard this song before") and how most of his musicals are rock operas...mwahahaha...

speakeasy (in the style of kander and ebb): this mainly made fun of cabaret while poking bits of fun at kiss of the spiderwoman and chicago. pretty awesome stuff

they ended the show in the style of marvin hamlisch's "one" from a chorus line, complete with kickline and golden-sequined hats.

the girl who played june was good, but you could definitely tell she wasn't very experienced and she was so nervous that she wasn't doing her breathing properly and therefore sounded breathless or flat. but she was still generally enjoyable to watch.

the most amazing performer of the night was definitely ryan stutz, who was last seen playing jimmy in thoroughly modern millie last semester. he was by far the funniest and most interesting character/actor to watch. his facials and voices ranged from high to low, from crazy to sane, from hick to cultured. he did it all. and i commend him.

first off, i would like to say that this is a play not to be viewed literally. there was really no plot. this was a comment on society and on racism towards african-americans.

the acting was pretty good, i'd say. there were a couple people i didn't believe, but i wonder if it was because this was a bit of a brechtian performance... (bertolt brecht was known for not letting you get attached to his characters...he felt that audiences should think analytically about plays rather than get gut emotional responses like in the theatre of cruelty...)

the set was amazing. half the stage rotated and the other one moved straight out. and the lighting. yeah. amazing, with the glowing paint.

costuming was amazing too, although miss roj needed underwear...cause people might've been focusing on her...erm...manparts flopping around...

i don't understand.

is it really THAT weird that i don't really turn on the tv? sorry if there's not something on tv that i find more important than people or things for at least an hour every week...

don't get me wrong. i watch tv. there are shows that i watch. but i don't find them so important that i have to watch them EVERY SINGLE WEEK and get upset if someone even asks me to do something during that show...well...getting upset is an exaggeration, of course. but i don't keep up with what's on tv. occasionally i'll be like, oh! this show's going to be on! yay! or i'll be bored and surf channels to see if there's something on i care to watch. but that's really rare.

and i don't always have my cell phone on or on me. is that really a crime? seriously. i get so much crap for that. now, there are some of my friends who really need to get ahold of me, and i know how that can be annoying. but when you never call me or anything and you bitch at me for not always having my phone on and crap, yeah, that gets on my nerves. of course, these are the people who blow off their friends for guys(already having made plans with guys is different than making plans with friends and then ignoring them because an opportunity for a guy happened along).

just so you know, blowing me off for a guy doesn't sit well with me. it's. not. cool. the last time i remained close to someone who did that to me...it didn't end well.

and i have eclectic tastes. it's called accepting it and getting over it.

life is more important than tv. at least you can live it.
friends are more important than tv.
friends are more important than boyfriends.
period.

and being unique is great. but sometimes it's a little stressing.

hrm. didn't mean to rant. but i guess i did. *shrugs* oh well.

section of a list of things that put a bounce into krista's step:

1. "the wrong note rag"
2. wonderful town
3. finally getting dinner at ten at night

writing libretto: meh, not amazing...the story alone wasn't really all that great

writing of the music: !!!!

the song "100 ways to lose a man" made me sooo happy. because i understand and appreciate what it's about, aaaaaaand because it's just awesome anyway.

and the "wrong note rag" wow. amazing.

set: minimalistic...but good. they did this whole big band thing, because the play was set during the big band era. like, the orchestra, was onstage. on one of those stages like big bands are. it was sooo cool. and one of the actors did a clarinet solo. soooo cool!!

actors:
bob: puuuurty good
ruth: *drool*
eileen: grood

when eileen and ruth sang the "wrong note rag" tho, i decided that i was giving a standing ovation at the end. wowowowowowowowow!!!

choreography and execution of it: amazing. YAY!!

this wasn't really a show where you could watch it and be amazed at the intricacy of the plot or find some profound meaning. it made some pretty effective jabs at american society (such as this song where the wreck is talking about his college glory days where he couldn't even read and introduced albert einstein when he came to talk...and was only given such positions of honor because of how well he could play football). this is a show comparable to the movies holiday inn and white Christmas in the fact that you're not going to watch it because of the riveting plot, but you're going to watch it because of the amazing talent (if you have talented actors, which these WERE).

this show deserved more standing ovations than it got.

so i'm back at bsu for a new semester now! yay!!

believe me, getting away from pendleton is such a freaking relief...

but yeah, none of my classes start before noon, and until the 24th of january, i don't even have my noon class on mondays, wednesdays and fridays! i'm going to like that class tho. my prof is amazing. and i learned in that class that if you really wanted to, you could suck out someone's eyeball. my prof, karen, is directing an EXTREMELY dark play (this is a woman who aDORES dark stuff...and this play is hard for her to direct) in which that happens...and that's one of the easier things to watch in the play. but that play is in chicago and that's the reason that i'm not having that class (directing 1) until january 24th.

and i found out that art history (my class after that) might be one of the best classes to be taking alongside directing. i'm sooo excited about our projects! whee!! and art history might possibly help me out with one of them. and if it doesn't, i have several art major friends that could help me if i needed/wanted them to

and...I'M GOING TO BE A SOPHOMORE NEXT YEAR!! YAY!!!!

i thought i wasn't, because on the record so far, i'm going to be one credit short of being a sophomore...until i remembered that when i get my credit in german 201, since i tested into it, i'll get the credits for german 101 and 102!! *very happy*

so, yeah. first day back was totally awesome (even tho i didn't get any sleep the night before ) and second day back promises to be a good one as well.

psh. they were gone for, like, four or five hours. and i stayed at home all day doing laundry and stuff because i was supposed to hang out with my family after my sister got home.
ROCKY HORROR!!!! so, now i have rocky horror (some version of it, at least ) on my itunes and i'm reading about how it came into being (it's a really interesting story, actually )

i find it amazing that people still find themselves prejudiced in this day and age. prejudiced against race and sexual orientation. religion will always have prejudice against it, i'm sorry to have to admit. i don't typically prejudice against people with different religions, but i know that the world still wars about religion, unfortunately. but at least i thought we could get over race and sexual orientation. seriously.

and you would think, that someone who had been subject to racial slurs would think not to prejudice against people. whether it be race or sexual orientation. but you know what? i thought wrong.

being prejudiced against a group of people because of the amount of melanin in their skin is stupid.

and gay people are people too. point blank. we're all people, and we're more alike than different. so if you would just shut up and look past whether or not there's more or less melanin in their skin and whether or not they like guys, girls or both, you would see that there's a person there who lives, eats, breathes, sleeps and FEELS. wake up. learn to accept people for who they are. the world would be a better place if we all did.

they're typically high-energy happy people. and they're amazing. seriously. like, here i am. working theatre library. not exactly feeling well, but still working it. and this random guy comes in as mike(my prof who supervises me) and i are discussing me not being noticed in my class before library cause i'm wearing a hat (it's misting outside and my hair was starting to get really poofy...hats help keep it under control...specially this one...which i kindanotreally stole from ~rutske. hehe.) and he starts talking to me about my hat. and then ~sesquiped-alienated comes in and is like, "hello, girl with the piano bracelet!" and she's all happy and hyper.

and then i broke out the wheat thins. and we had a party. we were all orgasming over the wonder that is wheat thins.

and i didn't even catch the guy's name. hehe.
and then ~sesquiped-alienated and a whole bunch of her friends were all in there being goofy and stuff...it was just awesome.

i had a lot of fun yesterday. becca and i went to walmart and she bought the little mermaid and the mulan dvds.

and we watched them and ate junk food. those two movies are what disney COULD be. we discussed the detail and at some points how it wasn't in detail and how it didn't matter and how sometimes the detail was incredibly intense. it was awesome. and the writing! omg! there was...dare i say it? CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!!!!! in a disney movie! :gasp:

we saw previews for some more disney sequels, and i was like, omg, not again. little mermaid three and cinderella three. the concept of cinderella three is actually decent but i'm pretty sure the writing won't match up as usual. and then the preview for the third little mermaid at the beginning of the dvd was amazing...it showed the ship crashing scene...to pirates of the caribbean music. omg! but the actual musical preview of the movie that we saw later really sucked like i thought the movie would. ergh, crappy disney sequels. *shoots someone*

but yeah...watching those movies and then the labrynth and pigging out on junk food was amazing fun. woot!!!

oh, and my former quiz bowl team, who i had captained to two wins at state and two national qualifications won state and qualified for nationals again!! and the talent act won state as well!! i's so freaking happy for my friends! because last year, we had an awesome talent act and we got third (after the preamble...no harmony and same amount of sound as we had...our group had nine people, their's had forty...and after "boy from new york city" where there was a random guy who sat in a chair with a mic and said "yeah!" and there was no sound or facials...), so hearing this makes me amazingly happy.

second journal today...ergh

so, thoroughly modern millie, the second show i've seen in university theatre (the other being twilight).

O.M.G.

me !

not gonna lie. i'm kinda speechless. i don't really have many criticisms.

writing(music): the songs for the most part went where i wanted them to. mmmmmm...*sings* have you seen the way they kiss in the movies? (isn't it delectable?)

writing(libretto): character development. no holes. i never questioned why the characters did what they did. nothing seemed coincidental...TOO coincidental, anyway (too coincidental being as coincidental as the endings of moliere's plays, hehe)

acting: everyone was pretty believable...and beth, my acting prof, who was one of the main characters...*clutches heart* that part was written for beth turcotte. omg. she put so much of herself in that character...it was amazing. i mean, she was amazing and hilarious whether or not you knew her personally. but...when you knew her and were sitting in the audience watching her...she was flipping hilarious. the "ha ha ha!!!"'s that are so beth that she did...omg, i was dying.

singing: everyone was pretty good. not too many complaints. millie was a bit wide at some points. muzzy...was amazing. she got a standing ovation from me. she and beth both.

dancing: awesometastic. i knew that millie was having trouble with her little tap part before the show, but it looks like she pulled it off. the chorus did an awesome job too. facials among the chorus were a bit cheesy, but...i think they were being showballs for a reason and it fit perfectly with the show

ergh. i have to do math homework. so i shall stop my review for now. except that i must also mention that adam counted a light malfunction and a dropped line---not bad for opening night. that, and people have been pulling all-nighters for the set and i thought it looked pretty darn good. considering i'd seen it tuesday and certain parts of the set didn't look great but yet they looked awesome tonight. YAY CREW!!!!

fictionpress is being stupid again. i've written two new poems and i want to post them on there. but it's being evil.

btw, that emoticon needs to be everywhere...i enjoy using it too much to have it only deviantart, hehe.

anyway...also...i am doing calligraphy for this thing for my grandparents. it's their fiftieth anniversary in december. and i'm writing out this poem that my grandfather picked out, and it's really sweet. i'm just so worried i'm going to mess it up. i've been practicing whenever i'm bored in my dorm room, and even while i'm studying or talking to people online. i haven't done any serious calligraphy since i did my brother's graduation open house invites...when i was a freshman in high school.

so, worries about the calligraphy thing:
spacing on the board thing i'm writing on (it's huge)
messing up on formation of the letters
the pens my parents bought running out of ink and having to go find the same pens (this is why i prefer ink and nibs to markers...it's just that the crappy meijer in anderson didn't have ink and nibs )
i haven't done serious calligraphy in awhile.

not only is this something special i can do for my grandparents, but it's prolly one of the last things i can do for my grandmother while she's still able to recognize me and what i did for her (she has alzheimer's).

so...let me get back to worrying about that...

"never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups." ---unknown

so yeah. i chopped off my hair. approximately fifteen glorious inches of it.

i was gonna get it done at my hairdresser's, but then my friend adam im'ed me and was like, "let's go to great clips!" and i was like...cheap haircut...hmmm...SHYES! and my haircut ended up being free. it's free if you donate to locks of love. so, not only do you get a free haircut, but you get a warm fuzzy feeling insides because someday there's going to be a balding cancer patient wearing your hair. it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling anyway. my hair grows like a weed so if i grow it out every four years and chop it off, then more people can have wigs.

and you know who wants you to like them or who likes you when you do something drastic like i did. two of my three profs today have commented on my hair and how much they love it. the one prof who didn't, my math prof that i loathe, i'm pretty sure doesn't like me. and it was quite obvious today. but i've had a whole bunch of STRAIGHT guys commenting on it without being prompted...awesomeness, hehe. and one of the nice cashiers from the atrium noticed. i was surprised. and it's amazing how many people you don't know that know who you are when you do something like that. i've already had people i've never once talked to in my life come up to me and be like "i love your haircut!" it makes me feel...known...in this campus of 20,000 students.

now i need a curling iron...

i'm going to have to take a picture of my flat and put it up here when i get it back. because basically i made my own canvas and painted on it. tee hee hee.

next week, be expecting a review on thoroughly modern millie. i'm seeing it on opening night (thursday). and my acting prof is in it. i can't wait to see her do her big song and see what all she does. because she's amazing and i love her.

i kinda hate some of the guys in my major knowing when i work in the theatre library. because they come in here just to bug me...gah... btw, wagging your tongue at me when you leave after checking out NOTHING and just talking to me for a half an hour and then saying that you were cleaning the glass on the door...NOT ATTRACTIVE. not even remotely flattering. sorry. the whole tongue thing is more like, "i want you to be a whore with me." whore in the bad way. when i was at rocky horror, i felt like a whore in the good way, as in "whoa, i'm a hottie!" that makes me feel like a whore in the bad way: "eh. screw doing sweet things for you. let's just make out." no. not cool. it makes me want to do this to you:

good, got that out of my system.

now...to be bored working theatre library till sasha comes back! woot!

i lost my rocky horror live showing virginity tonight. and it was good.

my friend sam (lilyharlequin) had been telling me about the immense fun of it for ages upon ages. and she and my friend nick (bodhisvaha) had been wanting to see it in a theatre for forever (sam wanted to take nick and me because she'd been before). unfortunately they weren't able to make it tonight. but i still had so much fun.

we got on the stage and did the time warp. and we threw toast. and toilet paper. and confetti. and rice. kudos to the janitorial staff of pruis hall for cleaning up after us every all hallow's eve.

btw, happy halloween everybody! wheeee!!

i was kinda hyper. i had a mountain dew. and a little caffeine goes a long way with me lately...because i rarely drink caffeinated beverages...

i'm coming down off of my rush, but i've still got things to do and it's about 2:30...i'm not sure i'm going to get any sleep tonight.

but, yeah. fun stuff. ^_^

okay, so i did a review on man of la mancha. and i just saw erratica tonight, and i felt like doing a review on it. and i've mentioned twilight: los angeles (gave a mini review on it, really, methinks) and i barely mentioned house of yes...so i'm doing reviews of house of yes and erratica. both were shown in strother theatre.

house of yes:

acting: amazing. loved it. the girl who played jackie o. was flawless. they all had difficult characters to play in a very intimate acting space and they did it all VERY well. i was under the illusion that you're supposed to be under in theatre. amazing.

the set: well, i helped paint the floor. obviously, it was amazing. alright, all narcissism aside, the set was pretty cool. it was thrust style, and the raised part of the stage was raked, so that the audience could see the bed and the things on the floor. it was raked so slightly that you couldn't even tell it was raked.

writing: awesomefreakingtastic!! i LOVED it! it was dark, it was funny, and it kept you thinking. i still think about it. DID the mother kill the father? it was written in a way that you could go anywhere you wanted with it. genius. awesome. and all that jazz.

directing: not all that great. he didn't want the show to be as funny as it was supposed to be because he wanted the ending to have an impact. but the thing was, it wouldn't matter how funny it was before, jackie o. shooting marty was going to be a big deal. and this would go in the acting part, but i'm going to have a quick tangent---the insane smile on jackie o.'s face as the lights dimmed haunts my dreams...and i'm not the only one. *chills*

erratica:

acting: decent. it wasn't bad. but it wasn't amazing. with the way it was written, it was difficult not to trip over the lines. the girl who played professor stafford couldn't really keep from tripping over the lines throughout the show, but she made it pretty convincing in the scene where she was supposedly drunk. and elliot lemberg, stepping in at the last minute...that was freaking amazing. and the part where he had to dance... whoo! that was awesome. and hilarious. i wouldn't have taken ryan for an actor. but he was pretty good.

writing: it left a few loose ends. didn't really care for them. maybe she's wanting to write a sequel?? other than that, it was funny.

directing: i think elliot did a good job. yes, the guy who played christopher marlowe at the last minute was also the director of the show. awesomeness.

set: the alley was actually pretty cool. i mean, i had to do some work to see what was going on at the other end at times, but it wasn't too bad. oh, and i was the one who supplied all of the shakespeare books while i was working theatre library. go me!

quick note on twilight: los angeles, 1992
set: oh, yeah, i helped put that baby together
writing: it wasn't writing. it was just putting interviews together. no creativity.

thank you! *bows* more reviews to come...for in a matter of weeks, i shall see...thoroughly modern millie!!

reactions:

pre-show: i'm not too excited about this, but i'll get to see some talent and might be pleasantly surprised

during show: was i supposed to laugh at that? omg, why did they do that? was there a reason? wtf? i'm confused!

post-show: not surprised that some people left at intermission, but shocked at the ignorance people have of broadway, singing, and performing in general if they thought that crap was worth a standing ovation. i stayed and applauded merely for the bravery of the actors to get up and perform something that crappy.

analysis:

libretto writing: no character development. they were one dimensional. and static. it sucked. period.

the music: the last song was the best. it ended the way i wanted it to. big high notes and everything. that made me happy. but there was no need for the rest of the show. seriously. the whole message of the show was in the last song. write a review show if you're trying to get a message like that across.

the set: amazing. the best part of the show.

acting: sucky. it was very very fake. seriously. and, aldonza/dulcinea...what the heck was up with the accent? one minute you had a thick one, one minute you had none, and the next you had a slight one. MAKE UP YOUR MIND!! DON'T HAVE AN ACCENT BECAUSE THE REST OF THE ACTORS DIDN'T!!

singing: aldonza/dulcinea--what the crap?! where the HELL was your vocal support? how in the heck did you get on broadway with such a weak voice?
cervantes/don quixote--you were actually decent
sancho--you only got away with your nasally voice and lack of support because it fit the way you went with your character.

blocking: who the heck blocked this...and WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?! um...i laughed at the fight scene. it was that bad. and there were people standing with their backs to the audience...big no-no in theatre. anyone who's ever had anything to do with a theatrical production knows this. and why were there people idle onstage? and why were there actors acting as grips...while the houselights were on? come on, theatre is all about creating illusions. and you destroyed it before it began. congratulations.

krista: thumbs down
kristin: thumbs down
erin: left at intermission
amanda: left at intermission
keaton: sadly disappointed from what i could gather

okay, so bad news first: i'm not the big bad wolf but it's okay. i get to be in two of the little plays as the brother in possum came a-knockin and one of the three little pigs in the true story of the three little pigs. so, i get to be an antagonist, for once! yay! so it's kinda good news as well

good news:

1. my friend andrew just told me that the little mermaid is being turned into a stage show. and he's going to be burning me a copy of it. and he's going to let me see company when he brings it from home this weekend. YAY!!

2. i went to voice lessons last night. two words: three octaves. oh yeah. ^_^

3. i have tickets for man of la mancha on tuesday. and i'm going to go see "an original music cabaret" which is a bunch of sondheim songs in the cave. the great daehn says this is a show that is for me. and then i'm also going to go see erratica, which doesn't look too bad considering the things i've heard about it (i saw a preview in freshman experience )

4.my friend keaton is taking time out of his schedule (people in the honors college who are double majoring in math ed. and musical theatre have VERY little spare time) to help me with a project for my acting class and we're going to go try to see erratica together, cause he's just that awesome and misses me as much as i miss him. ^_^ for those of you that don't know me personally, he's the guy i went to prom with and is pictured in my featured deviation.

so, that's all for now.

well...today has been an interesting day...

i was almost late to my first class because i didn't wake up to my alarm...das ist nicht gut, sagte ich! i love speaking german and confusing people, mwahahahaha!

but, anyway, i found out my two o'clock class was cancelled. so...i had a lot of free time to do homework and stuff...emphasis on stuff, lol.

and then tonight, i went to an audition for the stone soup players. it's this acting troupe mainly made up of theatre ed. students. they perform adaptations of children's stories for...well...CHILDREN!! and i feel really good about it...because they kept having me read the big bad wolf in the true story of the three little pigs. we're doing, obviously, the true story of the three little pigs and also gertrude mcfuzz, possum came a-knockin' and snake's alley band (or a similar title...). i'd only heard of the first one...but the second one seemed familiar (it's a dr. seuss story )

so...the results are being posted tomorrow...*prays*

and in about fifteen minutes i'm leaving to go to swing society...which means i have to change out of my pajama pants (i changed when i accidentally walked through a puddle on the way home...)

so...that's all for now!

p.s. i hope i'm the big bad wolf!!!!! !

earlier i was actually busy (shock!) and while i was sorting through the "card catalog" i got to hear the great daehn (as i loooove to call mike, my main professor in my major ) and karen kessler discussing twilight: los angeles. twas quite interesting, bc the great daehn and i had just come from aesthetics where we were discussing the show with some of the actors. they were talking about how it was documentary theatre and how people had problems with it. i didn't mind that it was documentary theatre (although i didn't really care for the show myself...), but i minded that someone was the author of it. sorry, but you didn't write that play, lady. you interviewed people and organized it. that's not writing. gah.

so...it's all rainy...and i was so excited yesterday when i was walking from deho to find that they had taken down the "bridge" to put a level of asphalt so when it rains, i will neither slip, nor get my feet soaked when rushing to class. but the thing had its first test today. and it needs to be higher. or more level or something. but whatever
keaton was hanging out in here with me earlier...helping me keep my sanity and he was telling me that i need to download macsaber. it's sooo awesome. basically, you turn it on and then move your lappy around and it makes light saber noises. mwahahahahahaha!! and he wants me to show him how to get my awesometastic desktop, cause it just rocks that much. mwahahahaha!!
but, who knows? i may draw something. i have a scanner now, so i can submit stuff that might actually show my pencil strokes...like when i tried to submit this sketch of a mouse i did, but it came out blurry cause my camera sucks maybe i'll submit something besides pictures that might actually be worthy (unlike my drawing from acting class...which i proudly display in my dorm room, btw. it hangs right next to the pictures i've colored on the floor's coloring/disney/chick flick/whatever movie nights )
