I've been gradually moving towards this outcome for a while, and I think it's finally time to just do it. I'm canceling my TV service. I'll be keeping the internet, but my TV service has been nothing but a moneysuck on me for too long now.

I can get internet for 40.00/mo (Time Warner. AT&T is too damn expensive for just DSL) instead of getting internet + TV for about 120.00 (yes, HD service too). I'm sure this isn't really news to all of you, considering this is being broadcast via the internet, but TV is just one of those things that's really kind of hard to get rid of. Actually doing it isn't hard, but even starting the thought process of "I can watch everything online" probably isn't something that the average person A: considers, and B: actually follows through with.

Also, I'm saying this because I'm currently a blogger over at #hangintherebaby, posting weekly about Mythbusters. I know you can watch the episodes online, however there may be an extended delay in my ability to be timely with the posts due to my soon-to-be lack of cable TV service.

Regardless, I think that all should be well, and saving 80.00/mo isn't so bad either (it's the best part really).

All I've got to do is get a way to hook up my computer to my TV and I'll be set.

So, question – how many of you get all of your entertainment online? Are there any awesome places I should be aware of (other than Netflix / Hulu / YouTube)? Yes, I'm aware the answer to the second question is most likely "yes".

When I'm at the office, I listen to music. Whether it be the music that $liquisoft has on, or what I'm playing, there's always something on. Usually, when I'm playing something it's what I have locally on my computer. That can get kind of crazy after a while and there's a few times that things come on that don't really fit how I'm feeling at the moment.

For the last 2 days, I've been listening to something else.

That's where this neat iPhone app comes in...

What it does is allow you access to the entire Ghostly International artist collection, for free. If you aren't familiar with Ghostly International, check them out here. They've got a bunch of awesome artists on their label, and they span many different styles, something that this app makes very obvious once you start to really get into using it.

First I'll start off by showing the UI and how it works. You're first presented with this screen

I'd first like to draw attention to the rainbow ring (the "mood wheel"). What that does is act as a gauge for how you're feeling. If you're feeling really aggressive, set it to red. Neutral? Set it to green. The in between colors also work as well. Yellow-Orange would produce a frenetic / energetic feel.

Here's the full list of the moods

Once you've got the mood selected, set the sliders on the right. They range from Digital to Organic and from Faster to Slower. The app will then communicate with the Ghostly servers and produce a playlist of around 20-30 songs based upon your input.

Once you start listening to music, you'll see this screen

What this screen allows you to do is navigate between songs, pause / play, and also favorite songs that you like. When you favorite songs, it saves the fav to your phone (not the song, just the fav info), and later, you can send that information to Ghostly. It'll then produce a page of your favorites where you can listen to them anywhere that you can access the internet with a computer.

My favorites page from today is here.

You can also view information about the currently playing artist by clicking the "menu" button below the album art and then clicking "artist bio". In that same area, you can purchase the song as well as change lock settings.

I'd have to say that this app has really enabled me to hear some awesome music that I'll most definitely end up buying later on.

If you'd like more information about Ghostly Discovery, click here.

So, I've seen some people posting these, and I feel that I should too. Not necessarily to give some sort of insight into my extremely ridiculous personality, but more so to generate discussion on the things that we're all thinking and never tell anyone. I think it's really important to just let some things out because, if you don't do that, you'll go crazy.

I'm doing this for the betterment of everyone. Not just for myself. I really hope that anything said doesn't offend anyone, and I also hope that if you think that any of this is about you, please don't be offended. It's all meant for good.

Also, I'll go ahead and say that some of this may be a bit harsh sounding, but some of this has been just sitting in my head for a while and it needs to get out.

*Disclaimer*: I'm convinced I'm a little insane (100% serious). Don't take any of this too seriously. Regardless, it is what I'm thinking.

These are not in order of importance. Just in the order that I think of them.

Ten Things I Wish I Could Say to People:
1. I love you
2. I do not care about what you "know".
3. Help... please
4. Stop complaining. Think about what you're saying and how it's reflecting on you.
5. No
6. Stop using PowerPoint for everything.
7. The fact that I do not have a diploma, in no way, means that I'm somehow less of a person or not as able as you.
8. If I'm doing anything wrong, please tell me. I can't fix it if I don't know that I've done something wrong.
9. I need someone.
10. I'm sorry.

Nine things about myself:
1. I've been in situations in my life that most people only see in action / drama movies.
2. Yes, I am self-conscious about the way I look.
3. I really don't care if my feet are dirty. As long as they don't smell and they are clean when they need to be, then it's ok for me.
4. I believe firmly that driving barefoot is FAR safer than driving with flip flops on.
5. I'd like to think that I'm a better musician than I think I am.
6. 90% of the things I'm building my life off of are based upon self-taught information. I feel that effectively educating yourself is one of the most important things you can do as a human.
7. I cannot wear watches with batteries in them. They go dead in almost a week. I currently wear a kinetic (seiko) watch.
8. I absolutely cannot stand the police.
9. I drive like crazy. A good friend of mine once, after riding in my car with me for the first time, kissed and hugged the parking lot when he got out because he was so happy to be alive.

Eight ways to win my heart:
1. Be absolutely honest.
2. Think about the things you say to me. My feelings get hurt easily.
3. Don't wear makeup.
4. Care about how you look and your own health.
5. Be on time.
6. Keep promises.
7. Don't criticize my lifestyle.
8. Don't be down all the time, and be able to handle things on your own if needed.

Seven things that cross my mind a lot:
1. Everything else that this journal won't tell you.
2. The past.
3. The future.
4. Damn fonts.
5. Money
6. I need to eat better things
7. I want to hug you for a long time and just enjoy each other's presence.

Six things I do before I fall asleep:
1. Make sure my TV is on CNN before I turn it off
2. Make sure that my door is locked
3. Make sure I know what I have to do the next day
4. Brush meh teefs
5. Get nekkid
6. Make sure that all 5 alarms (all on my iPhone) are set and on (7:00, 7:30, 8:00, 8:30, 9:00) so I can wake up on time.

Five places I want to visit:
1. Japan
2. Mars
3. Steve Jobs' and Jonathan Ive's offices.
4. Moog Factory
5. Monome factory / barn

Four things I'm wearing right now:
1. Shorts
2.
Oh man, was this meet SUPER awesome! First off, thanks to all of the people who came out for this. I really appreciate that, as I'm certain the other staff do as well.

As for events, wellllllll...

We took the group picture which I'd think should be uploaded shortly (or at least sometime in the next few days).

*update* `DivineError took the group picture:

More pics from him here!

We all drew on the sidewalks with chalk which was provided by someone. If you're that someone, let me know! I want to thank you!

Breaking up into groups was, for me, really funny. I say this because I had been planning on doing the digital art thing w/ Ryan ($liquisoft), but $spyed "volunteered" me for the anime group. This totally threw me off. I wasn't expecting that at all, however the anime peoples were awesome and I was thoroughly thankful to have lead that group!

After the groups stuff was done with, we all went to another area of the park and chilled / mingled / ate too many sno-cones (I personally had 3 sno-cones and 1 popsicle).

Oh, and IT WAS REALLY HOT. My watch has left a crazy mark on my arm because I gut sunburned (but I kind of expected that).

Then, some deviants got to see a technology demo (IE. ALL OF THE AWESOME FUTURE STUFF WE'RE WORKING ON) w/ $spyed and some of the dT team ($chris and $randomduck). Not too sure if they helped out w/ the demo though.

After an epic game of frisbee (and some awesome Nutter Butters from `dammitMEL) we headed out to get some food. Oddly enough, just around the corner from the park was a place called "Happy Tom's" which was completely empty. So, we flashmobbed the place and probably totally skewed their balance sheet for the month.

Once we were all filled to the brim with burritos and quesadillas and what not, the remainder of us headed out to our homes. I wasn't going to be able to ride my bike home because I was super epic tired, so =thederangedone offered to give me and my bike a ride back to my place. Super thankful for that. (THANK YOU ALEX) Much good conversation was had and that was that.

Soooooooooooo... THANK YOU ALL FOR COMING OUT! IT WAS INCREDIBLY AWESOME TO MEET YOU ALL!

If you'd like to see some pics from the meet (taken by $makepictures), check them out here.

First off, if you're not familiar with locks of love, they're an organization that provides hairpieces to people (mostly children) who have cancer and are undergoing therapy which causes them to lose their hair. Hair donation to this organization allows their hairpieces to be much cheaper than they normally would be because the organization doesn't have to buy the hair to make the hairpiece. Any hair that isn't used for hairpieces is used to offset the cost of making hairpieces. In other words, sold for other purposes.

Soooooooooooooo, I've been growing out my hair for the last 2 years. This was for the sole purpose of donating it. I've been doing this for 6 years, and this is the 3rd time I've donated my hair. Before I cut it, it was 18" long, and I ended up getting 11 ponytails! I'll be sending off my hair to Locks of Love soon, but until then, pictures!

Pre brushing!

This is what happens when I brush my hair. It gets CRAZY!

Ponytails! Most people just put their hair in one ponytail in the back and cut it off. Considering that most of the people who donate hair are female, that makes sense. Since I didn't mind having no hair in the end, I'd developed a way to donate ALL of my hair a few years back, which is to put all of my hair into ponytails and get them all!

After the cuts! 11 ponytails, and there's some leftover hair on my head, but it's all super uneven, and so on to the next step...

Shaved head!

You may notice that my shirt changes 3 times through the whole deal. The NIN shirt was worn on a day when we couldn't complete the cut because my shaver wasn't working. The next day, I got that worked out, and the deviantART shirt was worn when the hair was cut and shaved. I then took that shirt off (it was covered with hair) and took a shower. The final picture was taken after the shower, which is why I'm wearing a third shirt.

My Mom helped out with this so THANKS MOM!

Alright, UPDATE TIEM! It's a long entry... It's got a ton of cool stuff in it, so I really hope that you read it anyway.

Music:
I've been listening to alot of new music lately (over the last 3 weeks or so), and I'd like to share it with you. Mind you, when I say "new music" I mean, new to me. A good bit of it has been around for a while. I feel that all of this music is REALLY good to listen to while working. Each artist name / title is a link to that band's iTunes page. Tycho's music links to his own page as his music isn't sold on iTunes.

Xploding Plastix

This band is very interesting. A mix of electronic elements with live instruments and a very cinematic feel. Its like, electronic-orchestra-lounge. Each song is really different, and could stand on it's own if needed.

Telefon Tel Aviv

This band is one of my recent favorites. Super synth-heavy, it's what I imagine the "future from the 80's" would have looked like if it were inhabited with techies and really laid back people. Very atmospheric music, super good for just calming down, turning off and letting your ears think for you. There are some heavier songs in their albums, but I feel that they're just as relaxed as the calmer ones, just with a stronger beat.

Múm

I would imagine that if you could record dreams... this is what they would sound like. Think Sigur Rós, but more electronic, minimal, calm and with a female on vocals, and you get Múm.

Tycho

I know I've told you all about Tycho before (better known as Scott Hansen / ISO50), but I felt that I should include him again as he fits in well with this selection and also because, his blog is the reason that I've been reintroduced to all of this music. Tycho's music is incredibly atmospheric. For an electronic production, I'd say it's the most analog sounding stuff I've heard come from a computer... ever. Definitely a must listen.

Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto

This duo, I think, works really well together. They aren't formally a band per se, as they have their own personalities and release albums under their own names. They decided to team up for 2 albums and this is the result. The music is based in recordings of live instruments, however it's chopped up so much that, someone who wasn't aware of what what they were listening to would think that what they were hearing was a CD skipping. The only difference being that this skips on a beat. Alva Noto is known for producing music based from text files which he then has a program decipher and turn into sounds. His music is incredibly digital sounding (as it's 100% digital), and incorporates the "skipping" as a textural / beat element. Ryuichi Sakamoto is a classical artist who works mainly on soundtracks. Combine the two with a bit of atmosphere and these albums are what you get. Really good stuff to just nod off to or have a nice costal night drive with the windows down.

Yasume

Yasume is what I'd imagine you'd get if you were to make IDM more atmospheric and remove the "D" part, but keep the crazy beats. Really good stuff to listen to if you want to feel like you're in a techno-Japanese ninja-epic laden with fog.

Bike<...

So, it's been a while since I wrote a journal on things that I find interesting or just generally wanted to talk about.

...

It's kind of odd living and working in the all-aware knowing power of the internet. It's not a bad thing, but you find quickly that you've got to be very careful when you just want to shoot off some information without having to think about the repercussions of doing so. I've become very aware of what I say and where I say it, which wasn't something that I thought much about in college... or really, ever for that matter. It's good to be aware of what you say, definitely, it keeps you out of trouble, but at the same time... it's not something that people should have to be constantly worried about.

On another note, I keep finding my ideas for products turning up... already made. Not to say that I had the idea first or anything... who knows, maybe it was something that the person sat on for a few years, but it's just annoying seeing something that I'd thought of, free from previous knowledge, appear a few years later, complete and being sold to people. There is one thing keeping me at these ideas though and that is that I know how to make them better. Whenever this seems to happen, it always seems like the people left the design phase a few steps too early, and didn't completely flush out the product to it's final state.

Oh, also, there's this... which I can't tell you all about 100%, but I will let you know that I'm designing something for someone... famous. It is UI related and I'm extremely happy to have been chosen to tackle this. Big thanks to $liquisoft and $Waveswinger for the epic hookup. If you're reading this and know what I'm talking about (not Ryan or Marit, everyone else), please don't tell anyone. Everyone else... you should find about this in about a month to a month and a half.

I've been driving my car ('09 Mazda CX-7) in manual mode for a few days, just to see what it was like to operate a manual without a clutch, and really... it's good for quick jumps in speed and maneuvers, but it's not really as useful as you'd think. The computer still has control over the transmission, but it just lets you control when it changes gears. When in manual mode, you can downshift and feel the car slow down immediately but what's annoying is that there isn't an actual clutch. There's only 2 pedals, and a good bit of driving a manual, whether you realize it or not, is coasting with the clutch down. It's not something that you'd necessarily notice if you'd been driving a manual for a while but having an actual clutch pedal is a huge advantage, and I kinda miss it. My previous car ('94 Honda Accord) was a 5 speed manual and I could really tear up... everything in that car -- even the clutch itself. I had to have the thing replaced twice because both times, it had shattered. Something the shop techs that I took it to (who regularly serviced BMW rally cars) had never seen.

In my downtime, I've been working on some new music. I've actually been making music for about 6 years now, but as an inherently indecisive person, I find it hard to stay going in one direction as far as genre goes. One week I might be working on this club beat and the next, I'll be doing some sort of downbeat trip-hop thing; constantly changing my style. Yes, it's good to be versatile and I really strive to be, but at the same time, when I just want to collect some songs, and spit out an album, it makes things... complicated.

For those of you who don't follow my twitter account, I stated on there a few days ago that I'd started looking into the design of bookmarks and how to make them better and more useful to people who read or have lots of books. Well, the idea spawned the need to try to figure out how make that all work, so now I've got that in my brain. Thanks alot brain... thinking of things... sheesh.

In addition to design-related things, I've been thinking of ideas for my next print. I probably won't have time to work on anything anytime soon though, as that other thing that I can't talk about will most likely be taking up all of my free time outside of work for the next few weeks.

Alright, that was pretty long, and I've got to get some sleep.

Adios.

TL;DR - Read the damn journal. I'm not gonna summarize it.

Alright, so... I've been here for 8 years as of March 1st, 2009. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that's made this place what it is over the years. It's really awesome for what it started out as and what it's become. Originally just a cool new spot for skinners and themers to hang out, it's become the largest online art community in the world, and... it's just unstoppable. I've always respected the hell out of this place and the people who keep it running, but once I joined staff in July of '08 I now have even more respect for this place because I now know what it takes to keep it running... it's an epic operation.

I'm extremely thankful for this place for a wide range of reasons. It's been a large part of who I am and I'm really appreciative of that.

So... to all 150 or so of you, thank you. Thank you soooooo much.

Now... time to PARTAY!

Every donation will assist the project in providing photography workshops. Young people attending the workshops will be enabled, acquiring skills to develop self-confidence and improve their job prospects through art."

So, go check it out and help some people be awesome at what they love!

Now... I like doing "subject + "subject" journals. It feels more modern that way.

Anyway... First off, I've got some music that I'd like to get you listening to... even if it's only once. I really like this music and I've been listening to it lately.

• Tim Fite

I first ran into this guy by chance driving through Arkansas (Little Rock) on my way to Atlanta. I was going with a friend that lived there to a Ben Kweller show. I'm not exactly the biggest Kweller fan (if one at all), but I figured I'd just go because I'd had a summer of hard labor and just wanted to see a damn show. My friend and I show up at the bar not realizing that there's an opening act. This opening act happens to be Tim Fite. The show was absolutely awesome and if you can, check out some videos on YouTube. He's a really funny guy. I actually talked to him after the show and he's super nice. I bought one of his CDs (Gone Ain't Gone), and so it was; the music is awesome and definitely a keeper. He's from Brooklyn, but that's isn't all that comes out in his music. He could be from anywhere and his music reflects that. It's got hints of electronic, hip hop, rap, country, folk and ambient all in one and it's truly unique. If you've got iTunes, just search for him in the store. If not, you can find links to his music here at his website.

• Edison

Edison is more beat related as in... no lyrics, just beats. He uses a custom built Monome 40h, various samplers / effect boxes and kicks out things that I could only dream of. He's known as the finger ninja, and if you'd ever seen his videos (click here to see them) then you'd know why.

• Couch

Yeah... couch! Yay! I got a couch! It's being delivered on Saturday, so... I've got a week! I can't wait! It's this exact same one. Same color and everything. I sat in one today and it's reeeeally comfortable!

So, in addition to some logo-ing that I'm working on for dA (not the "official" logo... something else entirely), I've also been wanting to redo my own identity-mark for some time now. The only thing is that I've been having a real hard time deciding just where to go with it. What I've got now was really, kind of a fluke. I just made a shape, repeated it a little and it happened to fit to what I was looking for... at the time. But for some reason, I've been feeling that it means less and less, what it was initially meant to, which is a graphical representation of "inner wisdom".

Just in case you don't know what I'm talking about... this is the mark which I'd like to change.

Ignore the "light". It was meant to provide a means of making it stand out on the dA green when I originally posted it, but I don't have the vector file anymore, so... this is all I've got. I could reproduce it, but I really don't feel like it... especially when I want a new version anyway.

I'd like to know what everyone thinks of this idea and what your ideas are on the subject. Does it need changing? If so, why? I'm going to change it regardless, but I'd just like to get an outside opinion to see what others think about it.

Actually, this one came after the Team Reactor one, and before the Community Relations logo, but I can be indecisive sometimes and wanted a good presentation for this logo. Now, on to what I'm actually writing this about; why the logo looks the way it does.

First off, the Comm Ops team is composed of 3 groups; MN@, CEA, and Help Desk.
So, Wednesday morning, I'm getting ready to leave my apartment and something happens... lo and behold, I've dislocated both of my shoulders. I have no idea how I did this... I don't remember it happening. All I remember is at some point laying on my bed and not being able to get up because my arms wouldn't work. I had already unlocked my front door, so since I was in extreme pain, helpless and had to do something about my situation, I called the paramedics (911). After explaining to everyone that I saw in the hospital (who asked, of course) that I didn't know how it happened... they were all looking at me in disbelief. So... I go get a CAT scan done and 2 separate x-rays, they all showed dislocated shoulders, so... regardless of how it happened, it had been indeed proven that it did happen. So, now that I'm out of the hospital (got out yesterday at 11:00AM), I've gone to the local pharmacy and gotten my meds (Propoxyphen, which is a substitute for Darvocet), I'm feeling a little better now, but I still can't really move my left arm. My right arm is basically fine, just a little sore. My left arm, apparently had a Hill-Sachs fracture on the ball of the joint which appears to be temporarily (I hope) disabling 1 -2 muscles in my shoulder, so that arm is basically useless right now. I can still type just fine, and I can even drive, but if I don't have to, then I don't... it's kind of a scary situation; driving with one arm. I can't lift my forearm or lift my left arm at all. I can completely control my left hand, so I guess that's a plus, but... I wish that my left arm and right arm both worked. That'd make me feel alot better.

Also, pain meds... not feelin' too sober. I really wish that there was a pain med that DIDN'T do that. No pain and a clear head. That would be nice.

P.S. This is the new CSS... for now.

So, Creative has been REALLY busy lately. Lots of awesome stuff going on and things coming for the future... for you. Lots of pixel pushin'.

In other news, I'd worked on a film recently that was produced by a bunch of my friends (Escape Entertainment) from SCAD, directed by Rubin Whitmore II. It was a Korean Drama, and to the best of my knowledge, turned out pretty well. For this film I was brought onto the crew to be a boom op (the guy that holds the fuzzy microphone on the stick), which is something that I'd done before and was more than comfortable with. The only problem with that was that the other sound guy didn't know that I was going to be there, so he was completely prepared to just do everything himself, which didn't bother me one bit. Doing location sound is hard, not necessarily technically, but physically. After a while, those boom poles get really heavy (regardless of being made of carbon fiber). I ended up being a production assistant with a walkie/headset and telling people what to do, making sure that the production went smoothly.

Hopefully, I'll be able to post some production stills here at some point, so you all can see just exactly what went on on set.

On a more serious and slightly strange note, I've become almost unable to effectively drive with shoes on. I can drive barefoot no problem. It's just with shoes on, I can't really feel the pedals, and therefore, I don't get as much location feedback as I would if I weren't wearing any shoes at all. I find this strange because most of the people on the road drive with shoes on and don't think twice about it. I, on the other hand have been driving barefoot for about the last 4 years, and have really gotten used to it. This makes me worry because, when it gets cold, I won't be wearing flip flops like I usually do. But, I guess it doesn't really matter. I can always just deal with the shoes thing. I guess it's that I feel safer driving barefoot, and therefore, prefer that.

Aside... I don't drive with the flip flops on because they can get stuck under your feet or the pedals and cause inaccuracies in where you place your feet, which is dangerous. So, if I'm wearing flip flops, I take them off when I get in the car and go barefoot.

Finally, I've also found this anti-drug PSA from the 50s via Cracked which ends with, possibly the best phrase ever devised (last 6 seconds of the video (on page 2... second one down.)).

"Forget it man and get with the countdown. Shake this square world, and blast off for kicks-ville"

Alright, 1:27 in the AM... I'm going to sleep... Oh, and new Wacoms to mess with tomorrow.

Ooh and hey, Patrick.

So, today is November 4th, 2008. Election day. I got up at 5:00am this morning and got to the polling place at 6:00. It was literally right around the corner, so I wasn't rushed at all and I love that. I hate being rushed. The polls opened at 7:00. Yes, I know... I got there an hour early. I thought that there would be a line because this IS election day, and even though there are people who voted early, I still felt that the majority of people didn't do that. Anyway, I was the first one there, and that made me feel a little strange, just standing there in front of a church in the dark. But I was definitely happy that I got there when I did because parking was limited and within 30 minutes of me having shown up, the line to vote was already going around the church and out into the next block.

The voting itself only took about 30 minutes and really was kinda fun, really made you feel like a part of this country. Unique experience, as I'd never voted before.

My polling place only had paper ballots as well, which really was a relief to me because honestly, even though I use computers every day, as it's a requirement for my job, I don't trust computers to "safely" get my vote correct. I don't like the idea of computerized voting machines, I mean... the idea is sound, but the cost is too much compared to paper ballots and also, they're not even accurate sometimes. It doesn't even compare to a "put an ink dot on this circle" ballot. Of course, the scantron machine that counts these paper ballots isn't exactly accurate the entire time either, but at least there's a paper version of the ballot to go back to to cross reference the vote. With a computer machine (with paper printout) it takes what you press whether it was wrong or not and then prints THAT out, so if your vote wasn't registered on the screen correctly, then it'll print out wrong meaning that the papertrail that machine produces is basically useless.

Anyway I've voted and if you haven't (and you're registered) then get out there and vote! GO!

My thoughts on Apple's reflections and design

I went to the local Apple Store today with the purpose of testing out the new mirrors... sorry... laptops / displays that they had recently acquired.

Now, to preface this... yes, I'm a fanboy. Get over it. I get excited when Apple releases new products because usually, they're things that people have seen coming for weeks, and that may dull the experience for some people, but that's like... asking for one thing for Christmas and then getting it. You still get it, regardless of whether it was expected or not. Apple is in the business of revolutionizing things - getting out the "new" and I really like that. I like the new.

Sooooooo... on to my little visit to the Apple Store. I went in thinking that there would be hordes of people crowding the new laptops like there was with the iPhone, but no... I was able to walk right in and start checking one out immediately. There were alot of people in there, but not enough to keep me from getting a good eye on these new machines.

I went in to check a few things out. As the Associate Creative Director here, I do quite a bit of graphic design as well as direction and all that good stuff, but... the graphic design side of things is the reason that I was in the store today. Steve Jobs said himself that Apple was moving to glass screens for everything. I hear that and cringe. Yes, the glass is sexy and all that, it makes for a much sleeker form and to the people who don't need to see what they're doing with 100% accuracy, then these new laptops are just the bees knees.

But.

I am not one of those people. As Ryan or Patrick could tell ya, there are plenty of times when I literally get right up on my monitor and have to look at it from as close as possible because I'm looking at individual pixels. There are also times when I'm designing low contrast, transparent PNG files that I'll need to make sure that there aren't any cut off edges when I save the file. I do this by tilting the monitor to give myself false contrast and see the color limits of what I'm working with.

On Apple's current monitors, this works just fine and I'm quite happy with what they've got out now. Let me also say that Apple hasn't stopped selling these monitors and I'm thanking God for that. This new monitor is basically an iMac without the computer in it. It's got the same plastic black apple logo on the back that the current iMacs do, but it's in an aluminum case like the new laptops. It also only comes in a 24" model which I believe is what Apple is pushing as the new baseline consumer monitor size. I have a 24" iMac and when that thing showed up to my house I thought that it was a freakin" monolith. However upon taking a look at my TV, it doesn't look all that big, but I digress.

Apple's new monitor is made for dual screen setups (It's got a magsafe charger plug built into the display cable). It's made for people who need a laptop, but who also need the convenience of a larger screen when they want it. This would be a production setup and not something that your usual consumer would be looking for. This is primarily why the glass bothers me. Apple knows that this is a more of a pro-oriented setup, and still, they stick with the glass. I've heard people say that the brightness offsets the reflections in the glass...

Quick question... anyone with an iPhone... ever tried to use it outside in the sun? Yeah... not the easiest thing in the world. It works, but... let's face it... reflections suck.

Now to the real reason that I'm writing this. I want to tell you first hand, just what these new features feel like in person.

Glass Displays:
I believe that you already know where I stand on this, it's a hinderance to designers and usability in general. I can only hope that Apple decides to keep matte screens in their newer models, even as an option. If they don't, I can see many designers either keeping the ones that they have, or looking to other manufacturers for their displays.

Glass Trackpad:
Ok, Apple had a bit of a marketing oops here. They said that the trackpad was one big button.. let me clarify... IT IS NOT. The trackpad itself is mounted to the body of the laptop by a hinge. This hinge is placed at the top of the trackpad and means that you can't actually press down on the top 1/4 area of the trackpad. So instead of "The trackpad is one big button", it's more like "The button is one big trackpad". Also, this design decision... the removal of the separate button. It's not that big of a deal really. It's really awkward when you try to click with the same finger that you're moving the curs...

Ok, so... obviously there wasn't nearly the turnout that I'd expected for free stuff. But... nonetheless, there was one badass deviant who participated in what is now the last of the remix/repost contests.

~BlackWidowESP has won a year subscription and 2 deviantWEAR shirts of his choice! Congrats! Even though it was the only one entered, I felt that it was really, pretty badass. Keep on creatin' music.

BlackWidowESP, your subscription will be activated soon. As for the shirts that you have won. What you need to do is go take a look through the shop, find 2 shirts that you'd like to have, and then put them in your wishlist, and send me a note as to which shirts they are. (<- long sentence much?) If they're already in your wishlist, then just let me know, and I'll make sure that they're sent out to ya'.

Also, make sure that the shirts are in stock. This keeps happening where people choose shirts that aren't in stock, and then we have to go back and forth about it, and in some cases, the winners never get their shirts.

I want to make sure that you get your shirt, and that means... choose one that we have.
CONTEST IS OVER Update coming soon.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE: Alright, here's the deal. This round will keep on going for the next week. Also, I will not be gifting Fine Art Prints anymore. The prizes from here on out will be a year subscription and 2 pieces of deviantWEAR. The contests will, after this one, still run weekly. I'm extending this one another week because I am now aware that there were people who wanted to participate, but either missed the post, or didn't have the time. I will also state now, that if you want to participate, that this will go on indefinitely, so it'll always be running. There's no need to catch the journal. If you want to win something, come to my page, download the components, and make the best beat you can. It could be you who wins.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

• If you win a contest, regardless of whether you give your prize to someone else or not, you can't win for the next 2 weeks. You can enter and I encourage that, but you can't win.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alright! First off! The winner for round 1!

=sentrixx! The entry had a nice beat and made very good use of the supplied elements. So, =sentrixx, you get a one year subscription! WOO!

You can download his entry here: [link]

UPDATE: =sentrixx decided to give his subscription to another deviant! This special deviant is *Eternal-Afterglow, so, in that case... Congratulations *Eternal-Afterglow!
I've been thinking about this for a while now and wasn't really sure that there'd be any people willing to do this, but I can't know unless I ask, can I? In my time off I make music; beats, abstract soundscapes, clicks and whirrs... sounds. I'd really like to share this with all of you and do have plans to do that at some point in the future. For now, I'd like to know if there's any interest in perhaps, a contest of sorts, where I'd upload components of a beat, bass, drums, extra sounds, leads, or even things that aren't even close to being musical...

for you to remix for a prize.

The prizes could range from deviantWEAR to subscriptions (of all lengths... but not unlimited, I don't have those powers), or even Fine Art Prints!

The way that this would work is that I'll post links to .WAV files (they're the highest quality sounds that you can get... don't bitch about the file sizes, I'm not listening to all MP3 shit... they sound horrible. They'll be components, so they won't be huge), and you can use any program of your choice (Reason, MAX/MSP, Pro Tools, Sonar, Logic, GarageBand, Microsoft Sound Recorder... I don't care) to make a beat out of the components. I'm thinking that in most instances, this will be a general assembly/remix contest, but there could be themed contests too, like... best rap/hip hop beat made out of sounds of people vomiting, or perhaps an orchestra of clicks and glitches.

The participants will have to post comments with links to the music in the journal containing the original sounds for the entries to be eligible. The one with the best beat/soundscape wins. The amount of time that you have to work on these beats is a week from the original journal post. Once the next journal is posted, it'll contain the winner from last week, a link to their beat, a link to what they won, and also sounds/components for the next round.

So, what do you think? Would you be willing to participate? I know that there are definitely some talented musicians on this site, but there isn't a category for uploading music! Remember, if this contest goes well, it could (emphasis on the COULD) end up in the creation of a music category allowing a whole new slew of deviants the ability to show off what they're all about!

Let me know what you think! If you're a musician, your participation could net you some sweet deviantWEAR, a sweet-ass wood framed Fine Art Print (of ANY SIZE AND COST), or a Subscription!

-Zack

I just had internet and TV service installed at my apartment yesterday. I would usually choose Comcast as they are the common provider in the South, and I figured that they'd be available out here, but alas, I was wrong. I had to choose between Time Warner, which if you're a reader of Engadget, you may have seen that in May the city of Los Angeles actually sued them for having service so shitty that it actually wasn't any better than no service at all, and AT&T.

I decided to go with Time Warner despite the fact that basically everything that I could find about them said that they were really shitty. I chose them over AT&T because the last time I checked (before I checked today), AT&T stated that their U-Verse service (which is Fiber Optic) wasn't available in my area. I then saw an AT&T service truck outside of my apartment yesterday, and lo-and-behold, it is now available in my area... a week after I already ordered my Time Warner service, and the day that it was installed.

So, for the last 2 days I've been dealing with internet that is really... non-functioning for the reasons that you'd get high speed internet in the first place. Looking at content heavy websites, viewing videos, and listening to music. I even got the service that was recommended for just that purpose. Now, I like to cover all my bases before I decide to axe something completely, as in... call up TIme Warner and ask them for a refund / take their shit out of my apartment. So I've been doing some testing. It's not complete yet, but well... I'm really not liking this service. It does work when I'm using my iMac through a wireless router (Belkin N Wireless Router). However, my service through the router on the 15" MacBook Pro that I have for deviantART is intermittent at best. I can't download anything that's over 15MB on the laptop, and connecting it to the router directly nets no connection at all. This is a really big problem because I do my work for deviantART on that laptop, not my home computer (which is what I'm on now). I've noticed that this problems crops up when a new Apple laptop tries to use this specific router model. My girlfriend's MacBook did it when she was trying to access her internet connection over the same model router. People's internet from down the street was better than what she could pick up with the router located in the same room! I do find it strange though that she was able to use her laptop on this router at my house when I lived in Savannah, but couldn't use it at her house. I'm now having the same problem but with a newer computer! It's also weird that my 17" PowerBook works fine, AND my 24" iMac works fine, but my 15" MacBook Pro just isn't cuttin' it.

What do you think it is?

Alright, so Siggraph was pretty neat. I say neat because it certainly could have been far better, but then again, I'd never been to one before, so I don't know what these are usually like. I was expecting things like emerging creative 3D technologies, and what I saw was basically the same stuff being reused to do cooler "new" things. I want some new shit - that's just the kind of person I am. Anyway, don't get me wrong, It was an awesome event and it was really cool to have gotten to go, especially for free... hell, I was paid to go. But I digress. I'm happy to have had the opportunity.

So, here's the run down. Ryan ($liquisoft), Patrick (¢bionikdesign), and I left the offices at about 1:00, so we got there a bit later in the day than we'd expected. There was a "forgotten about meeting" that was remembered the night before.

Once we got there, we quickly started making fun of the parking situation. There were quite a few empty spots in the "in building" lot, and we still had to park across the street. Once we got in, I snapped a picture of the sign that greeted us at the door (Like the greeters at Wal Mart, but... plastic and metal... and not frustrated with their jobs).

Pat and I had to register ourselves (which by the way, their registration process is so damn fast it's nuts.), and then we could get in. Once in, We settled in the booth and then started our journey into the technological "wonderland" that is Siggraph.

This was our booth. It was quite cozy, and if you were at AX, it was at the back of Artist Alley, so... basically, crammed in a corner. We were near Google and LucasFilms, so that was cool... Also, the Activision booth was kinda close by, so if we wanted, we could go play some Guitar Hero for a while.

In this picture, behind me, there would have been this HUGE spherical camera (actually multiple cameras) that could map your face in 3D. They hadn't set it up to work in this "highly lit" environment, so they could only run facial diagnostics or else the images would come out all messed up, which kinda defeats the purpose of having it there in the first place. Regardless, behind that sphere of FAIL was our booth. That's where we were.

So, the 3 of us decided to start wondering around, and that's when we ran into Dan ($dloesch), and he started talking about this "talk" that he was going to that was about 3D Printing technologies. I'd studied 2 years of Industrial Design at SCAD, so I thought that this would be really neat. I was expecting there to be printing demos, and all sorts of machines, and models and all that, so I was really amped for this. We get in there, and first off, it was hard as hell to find in the first place. If you've never been there, the Los Angeles Convention Center is HUGE. It's absurd.

This is a small portion of the convention center. Dan and I are lost (even though we had a map). That's Dan on the left.

So, we get in, and it's literally a bunch of people just showing their own models and talking about how to make their products better. No demos, no new technology, nothing "interesting". So, Dan and I decided to leave. It was at this point that Dan later found a 3D Modeling demo, and I wandered off to explore more. I remembered that SCAD had a booth at this event and while I didn't really want to talk to anyone there, I wanted to see what their booth even looked like. Well, this is what I was presented with when I finally found it:

Just one big LED screen with a few seats in front of it. Typical SCAD fashion. Show how much money you have. Hey! We have a giant LED screen! Come to our school! Anyway, I say finally found it because it was basically impossible to find. Yes, it's hard to miss a giant screen, but it's also hard to see the black logos on silver metal when you have to look through the immense light produced by that huge screen. In the pictures, it may not look like all that much, but that's because my...
