While many may not consider me a staple in the pixel art community, hell, many of you may not even know me! I felt it neccesasry to kind of write what I have found the general consensus of what pixel art is among the people.

I have been a member of Pixel Joint (a all pixel art based community) for over 3.5 years, much of that time I spent as an administrator. I deal with every submission, in one form or another that comes through that place. We require a voting/approval process for pieces to be submitted to our gallery. This is to ensure quality standards and to try to catch most of the rip-offs that we get on a daily basis.

But I digress, you probably do not want to hear the in's and out's of being an administrator on some other site. I was just trying to establish a bit of a back story as to how I am able to have any knowledge over this subject. I see discussions all the time about what makes something pixel art.

And now, I will try to pool that all into one small (or freakishly huge, dunno, we'll see where this goes) list. Keep in mind, even if any of these may contradict your opinion, these are from some of the most renown and respected pixel artists there are, the know their sh*t. So much so, I will not not even argue it with them!

First off, it has to be created pixel by pixel. This means you had complete control of where every single pixel was placed and HOW it was placed. Blur, burn, dodge, spray can, and opacity. This is where most of the confusion comes from, and where the subject of pixel art can be touchy for some. For the majority, any pixel brush that is not anti-aliased is okay. For example, if you make a custom brush that is an ISO cube, it is okay. The paint bucket or fill tool is okay. This is because you have control over every pixel that you are filling. But with an anti-aliased brush, you can't control how much opacity the surrounding pixels have. The spray can is most infamous, and is not considered a valid pixel art tool to 90% of the artists. It sprays random pixels in a defined area. Random has no place in pixel art, random is basically a way of handing over control to a random number generator.

When it comes to layer opacity, you cannot control the colors of the pixels, thus lack of control and not pixel art.

Second, palette control. Ah, yes. The source of much debate on pixel joint. Palette control is a big part of pixel art. Pixel art stems from the olden days when there was a restriction to how many colors could be on the screen. That is where most of the beauty of it comes from. Working with limited colors, in limited space, among other restrictions. Otherwise, what's the point of taking all that time? Besides, it adds to the challenge of creating it. Anyone can pixel a beach scene using 256 colors... But it takes a true artist to make it using 16 colors, and they usually make it look better.

That is about it. This is what most pixel artists look for when defining pixel art. Every artist is different and has different ideas. But these are a few uniform truths that nearly any pixelist can embrace, or at least respect. If all else fails, if you follow these, you probably won't cause an stir when submitting your art to Pixel Joint or deviantArt.

I didn't touch subject or quality here because everyone sees the world differently and you really can't define what is good/bad art for everyone. Not only that, I wanted to discuss what makes something pixel art and nothing more, for now at least. Your comments are welcome, just remember, that while I completely share these opinions on what makes something pixel art, they are not just mine, this encompasses many many opinions I have gathered and thought it was time to share what I, and others, are looking for.

Toodles.

Let us get started here...

So let's see... I haven't updated this thing in about... Umm... Nearly a year?

I was actually planning on leaving deviantart, for good. You know, the "Goodbye all, thanks for all the fish" journal post, delete all contact info, and sign off for the last time.

So my subscription expired and I thought what a perfect time! That way the wonderful person who purchased it for me wouldn't be all like "What a waste of my fucking hard earned cash!". I got busy and didn't have the time to actually do it for a few weeks.

Then finally, I get some free time to do all that... So I turn on my laptop and when Google Mail Notifier loads up, I shit you not, the first notification that pops up says "DeviantArt: ******* has purchased a 1 year subscription for you".

So after I pick up my jaw, I was like "Screw it, guess I better stay anyways... God damn signs..."

Life, life, life...

So anyways, how about an update in life (for those who care)

1. Still suffering from the same abscess. While it is not as big as before since I went to ER twice now to get antibiotics and popping it several times on my own... I can still barely eat anything, also including soft bread. But alas, I cannot afford to get it actually fixed. I only need $2,400! Should be pretty damn easy to get that! /sarcasm

I tried all I could to get what I could to get financial aid or even get into a dental school, but to no avail. I guess I am doomed for the next several weeks/months/years/lifetimes.

2. I got a job. I am making minimum wage right now. But I am also working around 70+ hours a week. So I guess that makes up for it...

3. Women suck here. First woman out here I thought I was going out with decided to hop back to her ex, without giving me notice. Second, well, I won't go there. Bitch comes to mind.

4. Now, a little good news. I am beginning my apprenticeship as a tattoo artist.

I am not pixeling anymore at this time. Not sure when, or if, I will get back into it. I am still helping out the community though as much as I can.

Well, that is it for now... I will try to keep up with this place better than I have been. Key word being "Try".

This is a letter to myself. It is part of a "Growth and Healing" project in my therapy group. After spending nearly a week in a psychiatric hospital, I found the main cause for my problems, and now I am on a mission to recover from the past 17 years of oppression and the destruction I have caused myself.

Dear Chris,
I remember the day you came into my life. I watched as my brother died. That was the day you moved in, uninvited. I do not remember much after that day, but by what I have been told, you made many people unpleasant and you hurt me as much as possible. You sabotaged everything I put my hands on, or people that I loved. You would steal from them, you would lie to them, you would disrespect them, you did everything you could to ruin every dream and goal I set for myself. I never had control of you. You ran freely through the best moments of my life, making them the worst moments of my life.

I don’t know why you did this, and I don’t know why I let you do so for such a long time. I can’t understand why someone would make it their goal to destroy another person’s goal. No matter how hard I tried, you were always one step behind me, ready to trip me every time I made a step towards a better life. How can someone find as much joy as you had doing that.

I wish I had been stronger. I wish I could have been smarter. I wish I could have had the power that you had robbed me of. There are many things I wish I could have had. Sometimes I was so close to a goal in my life, that I could literally feel it, taste it, hear it, and see it. But there you were, to snatch it away from me without delay.

I can’t blame you all for this. I knew what I did was wrong. I knew this. I would tell myself that I am a better person than this. I am strong enough to fight you on my own. I was wrong. I needed help, but I was too afraid to ask for help. I did not want to be as weak as everyone thought I was. I know I was weak. I was weak because every time I was strong, you would knock me down, and take that away from me.

However, on this day, this hour, and this minute, I declare that no longer will you control my life. You will never again tell me that I can’t do something and me listen to you. No. You have had control over me for far to long. Sure, I know that you will always be a part of me, but never again will I allow me to be a part of you. Just because you speak, does not me that I must listen. Just because you say that I can not move forward, does not mean I can not take that step. You have for to long hurt those whom I love, you nearly took my life on several occasions, but that will never happen again. I am going to live my life, and I am going to become something where I can make a difference. Something where I can prevent you from hurting another person like you did to me. I am sick of watching people flying up to their dreams, only to see your darkness surround them so that they lose their way.

I have always thought of saying goodbye is a way of saying “I will probably never see you again”, that is why I try my best to say “See you later” when I am talking to people I would like to see again. Since I know that you will always be 2 steps behind me until the day we both run out of life, I will say see you, however, those days that you find an opportunity to sneak in and try pushing me in a direction I don’t want to go, I will dig up every ounce of strength I have in my body, mind, and soul to push you aside, and keep moving forward. When you speak to me, I shall turn my head and listen only to the ones I love. You no longer will have that or any power over me.

Sincerely,
Chris

Once in awhile I come across a pixel artist or two that get very little page views and even less comments. But their art is beyond amazing. So I am dedicating this entire entry to some of these people and their art. Today I ran across two, one who has mastered isometric, and one with non-isometric.

Isometric Feature
~ThereIsNoCure has been here at devaintART since July 6, and all of his works thus far have proved to be great pieces. He adds the smallest details that most people would not even notice. Here are a few of his works that really stood out above the rest.

Try to tell me you don't like his work, just try it!

Non-Isometric Feature
The non-isometric artist I mentioned here turned out to be a thief...

So there you have it, 1 great pixel artists that it seems the world has forgotten. Go check out their galleries, leave them some comments, favorite you favorite pieces, add them to your watch list so you can see their new art as it is submitted, and of course suggest them as a daily deviation.

*Yawn* I have to say, it has been an exhausting past few days. I got my resume done, my portfolio up, and I quit my job. So now I am going to be spending the next few days, or weeks looking for work.

Also, here soon you may notice that some of my journals will have broken images in them. This is because I am combining my graphic libraries with my portfolio, and the transition may be a bit messy, I will try to have them all corrected ASAP. THis entry and any following it will not be affected.

Ensellitis.com is going to be shut down for awhile coming up here soon. It will be replaced by a live webcam feed of my change jar, and no, I am not kidding. I am having problems with the eternal scripting and I don't have the time right now to fix it.

There are many pixel pieces out there that need some recognition but aren't getting as much as they deserve. To me, this is a very sad thing to see. Here are SOME that need to be seen...

Self Righteous Suicide, by who else but =selfrighteoussuicide, is one of my favorite pieces to date. It has deep meaning, and she did a great job of putting those meanings in pixel form.

Animating ISO pixel art isn't that hard, but animating a rolling ISO cube is not easy, in my opinion, but ~pepeyjack pulled it off. It is a simple clean peice, and it will surely be a reference piece for me in the future.

How do you make a great building for PixelDam? Have a look at Modern House by ~daporta, then you will know.

It is always nice to see people wanting to become pixel artists. But they need the help of other artists to get started. I have been at it for a few years now, and I still need help... Here are some starters, go give them some help, criticism, comments, or whatever you can.

The contest is still going on, head over to this journal entry of mine for more details!
I am already boycotting by not submitting anything until questions are answered. However, many people seem to think that this is a drastic move, I do not believe so. On August 7th, DA turns 5, however it will not be a happy anniversary due to the fact that one of our founding fathers, °jark has been mysteriously removed from his position. Show your support for our community, not just °jark, but for all of us as a whole. We are a community, we deserve to know what happens in our community, otherwise we are nothing.

Feel free to borrow the above image for whatever you wish, this is the first time in 6 years I have allowed any of my images to be hotlinked from my server, and it will stay there for public use until this place is fixed. The link is [link] , download it, save it, edit it, hot link it, post it, do what ever. I trust you guys, unless $spyed is reading this, in that case, grow up and do what is right and deserved.

UPDATE, since $spyed finally "responded" my gallery is back up, however, I will not be posting anymore deviations until the rest of the questions are answered...

UPDATE, I have just removed all of my deviations in protest as well. If you wish to do the same, simply go to [link] , the tools you need can all be found there for hiding your art, don't delete them, just tuck them away incase $spyed decides to grow up and be honest with us. I think I speak for the rest of the pixel art community when I say we will stand beside °jark through these times.
Been trimming fat off my good 'ol journal here and totally redid the header. I think I have a hernia, too. I have this pain in my groind whenever I walk. I am just full of hopeful news, eh?

My contest got posted in deviantART news, so now hopefully alot more people will enter. I am thinking of adding something to the first prize, thank you ^halfliquid. Not sure what though. I have an extra sound card laying around, not sure, I will update the journal entry if I make any changes and make a journal entry to inform everyone of any changes made.

And what the hell is going on with my page views? From January to June 2005, I had a total of I think 300 hits, here in the month of July, about 600! At the time of posting this, I have had 52, and it is 3 am... Thank you everyone for visiting, be sure to shout out in my shoutbox so I can go check out your deviations and such.

Today as I talked to a few friends, they asked me a simple enough question, how many hits has your site gotten since you started it. I checked last year, so I figured it was time to look again... And guess what, last week I hit 1,000,000 hits since 1995. My site has gone from a kid playing around with a new language called "HTML" to be a very indepth collection of PHP scripts running off of 2 mySQL databases containg hundreds of thousands of lines of code.

But I ask myself, "Self, is it time to change formats?" But then I remember a few things. For one, many users use my blog as a reference for WordPress and also to grab Petry DIsh, even though Petry Dish was pretty much taken over by another developer. But I hardly ever have time for it anymore. I have also thought about creating some kind of pixel art based massive online RPG... Not sure , maybe I will start a poll and see what people think

I am also holding off my Pixel Art Newsletter type thing I was doing for once a week on Fridays, otherwise it takes ALOT of time to do it every other day..
Been burning away at the old keyboard here working on "Pixel Art 101". I finally got a Wiki set up, it's hidden right now until I get more content. Unless you want to be a hardcore contributor, then I will set you up with the address. Any help would be great, proofers, editors, writers whatever, just let me know.

I also got the release form done, if you submit anything, you need to fill it out. Here it is. If I ask to use something, I will be sending this to you within 72 hours. To submit it, you just need to:

Print and mail it to me

Copy and paste it, then edit the parts that need filled out, and email it to me.

Or email me all the information that is needed to fill it out

The reason behind it is to protect my ass, as well as what you make that is used. And the reason that no one is being paid is because I don't plan on the price of it to be that high, I want it to be cheap to get, the rest will go towards the costs incurred from writing/publishing the book, and then money will be donated to cancer charities. I'm not doing this to get money, I am doing this to teach.
Time for an actual journal post. I have been neglecting this thing for so long, it's about time I use it. Nothing has really happened to me that would be worth mentioning here... I finally finished a project that I am proud of,

Alot of work went into that. Other than that, nada.

Oh! THank you everyone for helping me reach 700 views, it is amazing how fast they have been racking up lately... I guess I am doing something right.

*pixelblink spent alot of time, and probably caffeine creating this castle. It has gone through several revisions, and the final piece diserves to be in the Louvre beside the Mona Lisa.

Most Americans remember "A Christmas Story", it does play every year near Christmas time. When I saw this piece by ~ConspectuMortis, that was the first thing I thought of.
Pixel art was basically born from the games of old... Pong was basically pixel art. ~PunkSkull has made this pretty clear with his rendition of the Zelda logo.

There are alot of artists out there that diserve to be recognized, but these 2 have stood out like Michael Jordan at a midget convention.

It is always nice to see people wanting to become pixel artists. But they need the help of other artists to get started. I have been at it for a few years now, and I still need help... Here are some starters, go give them some help, criticism, comments, or whatever you can.

Alright, I finally subscribed to DA. I got this message saying I won a free trial, and I loved the new features, so I decided to keep it going and fork out the $29.99, kinda hard to do since I am so cheap.

And now on to more important matters... I am currently working on a book that will basically combine all of the tutorials (useful ones that is), tips, tricks, and so on.

That in itself is proving to be an enormous feat.

So there are some things that I would like help on, if you guys have the chance...

Cover for the book
Obviosly only one person can really do this. It could be a contest, or something, I have no idea. I can't really provide much of a "prize" or pay anything for it, maybe a deviantART subscription, but that is about it. It is going to cost me an arm and a leg to publish it anyways.

Tutorials
I am gather all the tutorials I can to make this book very indepth. So almost anything will help and be added. I will be covering isometric and non-isometric pixel art, so both tutorial-types will be helpful.

Pixel artworks
I will also be adding several works of pixel art into the book. I will be using several of my own, but I would like other people's as well. I would rather someone opt in thier art instead of searching and asking them to do so.

Something else?
If you have any other ideas, please let me know. You can drop a comment here, or note me.

Of course, anyone who contributes anything will be given credit in the book. I plan on setting up a wiki type editing site. So contributing, editing, and suggesting will be easier, but the location will be a closely guarded secret except from people who are helping.

If you know of anyone who can/wants to help, please send them my way. Like I said, I need all the help I can get.

Well, since I created that big ass castle, I might as well put it to use, so being inspired by PixelDam I made Ensellot, [link] .

So far just the castle is there, and it's not even done. But I always wanted to make a midevil type site, so I am gonna do it this way...

If you have anything you want me to throw in there, just email it to me at ensellitis [at] gmail dot com. Just replace the [at] with @ and replace the dot with a period, you should all know that, though.

Anyways, I have put in a long day, so I need to finally get to bed so I can atleast get 5 hours of sleep tonight...
