Why are amateur photographers so embarrassed by the fact of human skin, its rich pores and creases? They embalm their models with a thick coat of Photoshop goo, like Vincent Price in that wax museum movie, so they look more like cartoons. Their edgy punk-grrrl models end up like kitchy craft-fair candles.

My friends, I'm here to tell you that the skin's texture and imperfections are the very things that create interest . Sometimes I like an image in spite of it's author's photoshop skills, but I promise I'm never turned on BECAUSE of that plasticky-monotone look. I want some connection with the subject, not the idea of the subject.

Photoshop does nice things with color balance if you know how to use it (and if you're not trying for those moribund icy tones that are the viagra of a faded libido). But the smoothing/retouching doohickeys are crap. They provide cover for a photographer's discomfort with living things, with juiciness, the gorgeous human mess, and deep looking. Photoshop is the Muzak of photography.

So, writing as a devoted viewer, if you are willing to post your pre-'shop ("unedited") images, I'd be mighty interested.

My heart full, in a state of grace and beatitude, I returned home through the empty streets. Too little, I was thinking; too little! Too little of everything!
