DESIGN
design is the intentional planning or inventing and making of an article for a particular use.
The term 'design' refers to the article itself as well as the PLANNING of its CONSTRUCTION, operation and appearance.
It may be made by hand or machine and is influenced by the materials, shape, structure, use and appearance.

A design is not a copy of the work of another, it must be original.
It is a purposeful creation, the result of intentional constructive thinking.

New designs are necessary to fulfil the needs of man in our changing living and social conditions.
New shapes are required for new purposes often using new materials and new methods of manufacture.

When designing, the designer must take into consideration numerous aspects, each one playing either a major or minor part in the final production. If well designed it will be efficient in use and pleasing to look at.

highlighting words, what is design?
<sup>
intentional planning > invention > original > purposeful creation > fullfill the needs of man > made by hand or machines > influenced by materials, shape, structure, use, appearance.

DESIGN FUNDAMENTALS
The two main elements governing design are ____

1.EFFICIENCY____ (does it work?) Practical aspects.
2.APPEARANCE____ (does it look right?) Visual aspects.

| Efficiency |
combining all the practical aspects necessary to produce an article which is functionally sound and skillfully made of
suitable materials.

Practical Aspects. Its purpose should suggest its shape and form.
<sup>
Example.
A door handle or knob required to actuate a catch should be shaped for easy gripping and turning.

The efficiency of the article can be summed up by considering the following questions.

Does it serve its purpose well? Does it look as if it were made for its purpose? Is it made of the best materials to suit its
purpose? Is it constructed the best way to suit its purpose? Does it look as if it is made the best way?
Are the finishing materials durable and easy to clean?

Efficiency is the basis for design and depends on ____
(i) Using suitable materials.
(ii) Using suitable methods of construction.
(iii) Utility and fitness for purpose.

| Appearance |
the aesthetic or external visual aspects which are produced by skillful and honest used of shapes, surface textures, colors and decoration.

[ Each aspects depends on and Influences others. ]

The fundamentals of design are not dependent on any style or fashion but are aspects which are flexible and can be applied to any creative
activity at any time.

They are influenced by what people think is beautiful and suitable and in harmony with our constantly changing living conditions and enviornment.

Visual Aspect. The form and shape of the article should suggest its purpose and function.
<sup>
Example.
The shape of a door handle or knob should indicate its use and how it should be used, whether it should be pulled, pushed, turned or lifted
to operate the catch.

To have good appearance the following principles have to be considered.
(i) Form and shape.
(ii) Proportion and scale.
(iii) Balance.
(iv) Decoration.
(v) Unity or Harmony.

DESIGN AND THE COMMUNITY - design education

Good design is not always understood and appreciated by the average buyer. He can only buy what the shops display and is forced to purchase articles which are stylistic or modernistic.

*some points in Good Design.
1.Good proportions.
2.harmony of colors.
3.textures.
4.the effects of light and shade.

Throughout the world. DESIGN ORGANISATIONS OR COUNCILS ( assisted by governments in some countries ), realising the benefits of good design in manufactured good to the individual, the community and the nation, ar co-operating and pooling their resources in order to formulate design policies and raise design standards.
They are doing this by___
<sup>
1.Establishing Schools of Art and Design. (some providing post graduate courses) to train professional designers.

2.Encouraging international competitive opportunities for designers and manufacturers by holding International Exibitions.

Learning sculpture is the name of experimenting, exploring and more you get to know the characteristic of medium, more you get your hands on that well . take small amount of clay and with the help of index finger and thumb start playing with it by squeezing, making shapes. by doing this your learning the characteristics of wetclay, its form and how to work on it. you are teaching yourself and will came to know how much is the time duration when its useless and dries up after modelling the same amount again and again and when its having the cracks which we avoid by making it smooth. The best form to model anything with clay is.. it should be soft and should be done without doing any errors. if u do any mistake while making anything try not to break that shape and again starting with same clay will make the clay a little bit hard and dangers of developing cracks are more likely to happen. you might feel interested how do i join additional shape or how do i join the extra modeled thing to my sculpture. this may include jewelry, stone, or clay itself. first try with clay because you will be using this technique a lot in character design or what ever.
For example lets say u have modeled a vase. And you wanted to join the additional handle arms to it.
model vase separately and handle of vase without any cracks. the mesh should be smooth. should be organic. i prefer do this when you have a finished product that makes ur object stiff. so back to the handle. place it on the vase and again with the help from the tip of index finger start merging the end points to the main object which is vase. here you can make best use of nails by joining two different things in smooth manner. dont make the handle to much narrow as in radius or it might get into two pieces and will start messing up with you while you attach that part. more greater in radius ... more easier your job will be.
Finally, with great care put your sculpture in sun for one day. it will be baked in sun resulting a solid piece of work. you can apply paints enamel paints, spray paints what ever u feel like.
thats the quick manner of baking in sunlight. else its fired properly.

Things which should be kept into consideration are.
<sup>
- make sure the package in which your wetclay is placed is fully airtight by plastic shopper.

- do pour some small amount of water from time to time in order to prevent your clay getting tough and harder. By doing this your clay will remain soft as it was.

- while modeling anything from wetclay make sure there are no cracks in between. if u model anything and find cracks in it, make it smooth with the help of your index finger. Remember hands are the best tools. you can use nails, palm and fingers to get instant design.

- if you are working on bigger project in which you might feel it will take days and so on, take a wet towel and cover your sculpture with it and prevent it from sunlight.
</sup>

where you should start your work.

in the very first class you are required to make vase with the help of your hand.
Take a piece from wetclay and make it all round like a ball. the size should be small enough to hold, since its your first class its wise to work on small model rather going for large size sculpture. insert your thumb in the ball vertically while holding the base with left hand and with the help of first three fingers of right hand that will be index, middle and ring finger you will model the exterior of vase and will give shape to it while your thumb do the interior part.
there you go. you can make the base flat by putting it on flat surface and pressing from top gently.

How to work on Plaster of Paris

First you require some Materials written below.

- Packet of Plaster of Paris, (Rs. 30 for small packet of 3 kg, while Rs. 90 for a heavy sac of 30 kg approx.)

-Chisel straight

-Round Chisel

-Wooden Hammer.

-Sand Paper

-That sand box for sharpening your chisels and other iron tools.

-Other Sharp tools for giving details and depth, this includes butter knife, screw drivers etc.

- Tiles for making dye, (size depends on how big you want to create an object)

- Wet Clay, to hold the tiles vertically.

- a huge container to mix plaster of paris in water.

Process 1

Making a dye, A SOLID BOX.

Take a board, place the four tiles vertically making an empty box where you will pour your plaster of paris.
Next process, with the help of wetclay make your tiles stand strong or you can place bricks on all four sides so that your dye wont break up.
remember the quantity of water should be lesser while mixing plaster of paris in it. the more amount you mix the more solid piece you will get to work on.
mix with the help of your hand until your plaster gets heavy and thick, there shouldnt be any clots in the solution and without wasting your time pour it into the empty box you made with the help of tiles.
wait for a minute until it dries up and you will notice its dried up making a solid heavy box. try pressing that box with the help of your thumb, if you find its pretty hard and your thumb wont enter it, then consider yourself that you have done pretty good job in making a solid box to work either on carving or chipping method.
if you find that while pressing your box with the help of thumb it enters the box giving water from it then throw it. Because it wont dry up now, probably you have added water in more quantity then plaster of paris. please note plaster of paris dries up very quickly, dont wait for a long long time and thinking it will dry up, just throw it if you find your box is giving water and still wet after sometime.
A good box to work on is very hard, tough and heavy. Its a solid piece.

After working on Process 1 successfully, now you can work on following methods.

Process 2

Carving
now you are required to work on that solid box with the help of sharp tools. you wont need hammer in this carving method. You do freehand work all over your model.

Chipping
in this method you are required to work purely with Wooden Hammer and Chisels. Hold your Chisel vertically and hammer it, move your chisel same way you use to draw pencils on paper or mouse of computer.

Again if you dont have a solid piece throw it away. Its of no use.

How to Work on Plaster of Paris?
hope that was useful.
