Overall rather weak, primarily due to problems with the core plot. In particular the overuse of cliche's and how the end result was the 'release' of the pieces of soul that made up 1,2,5,6 and 8. The film seemed to be suggesting earlier on that the solution was not the destruction of the Machine (leading to their release which apparently causes new life to form on the world) but instead their eventual re-integration into the single unit that was the Scientist. This would also support the idea that each of them were elements of the Scientist's personality [1 being Fear, 2 creativity & ingenuity, 3&4 knowledge and the assimilation thereof, 5 prudence, 6 wonder?, 7 willpower, 8 strength, 9 courage?] Also, if 1 knew that the end solution was reintegration it would explain why he would choose to seclude himself along with the others as it reinforces the idea that he represents fear, in this case the fear of the unknown/ loss of self. This would also explain why 9 seems to be drawn to place the 'talisman' in the Machine, as it would be furthering his mission. This also could have been furthered if there were visible changes in the Machine as it integrated new elements, sort've like how it seems to show some sort of disgust when examining the remains of the raven machine.

Other weaknesses include the voice acting (that there was voice acting at all outside of the scientist and the film reels was likely a concession to big film, as it didn't seem necessary), characterization (I'd have to say that alot of the characters seemed too similar or perhaps just generic, the major exceptions being the wonderful performances of 2 and the twins 3&4) Also the way the film seemed to end multiple times without actually ending was rather annoying. Also as a minor issue, the way the montage of clippings and film that provided background info seemed far too clean, as if it was taken from a single prepared source instead of pieced together by 3&4.

All in all, while interesting and beautifully animated (especially the opening scene, which was wonderfully done), 9 was still weak. However I have hopes that these weaknesses will inspire and spur on others to take up the flag of more mature animated feature films and succeed where 9 failed. Hopefully it will take on a place, perhaps not as a great work of film but as a turning point where western culture realizes that the stigma that animation is just for kids is not necessarily true and begins to fully realize its ability to bring even mature, provocative stories to the world.

I would also recommend watching the original short on which the movie was based, its pretty easy to find online (try youtube searching for 9 short animation and look for something about 10 minutes long)

For starters, on Saturday I went to FanExpo in Toronto with my sister. I had a good time, though I kind've wish I found more people whom I recognized there (Though I did run into a family friend from a long time ago dressed as Dr.Horrible, and I hate to admit it but I honestly didn't recognize him and was really rather surprised when he immediately recognized me^^"), especially in the Artists Alley, as I've been wanting to commission some people. I also went to Marko Djurdjevic's Character Design panel (which was VERY impromptu, as he had no idea he was supposed to do it, and really if he had the chanced would've done a day long thing instead of a hour chat) which was really quite good despite most people being at a bit of a loss for good questions to ask him.
For loot it was pretty light on my end of things, mostly consisting of some Ghost in the Shell DVDs, the next issue of King of Thorn(s) (a awesome Sci-Fi/ horror/ apocalyptic manga),Warren Ellis' novel 'Crooked Little Vein', a whole bunch of Hellboy, one of RAK's Chakan Graphic Novelettes and finally a new 'buddy' for all the mini's I'm in the process of building - The Warlock of unlimitde power and good sense of humor - Richard, of Looking for group (he's also the mayor of a little town up the coast)

Of course, CNAnime/ Fanexpo isn't the really big thing thats coming up. As of this coming friday evening, I will be en route to Scotland for about a week! I'm really exited about this, as its the first time I've gone traveling abroad just for myself, also its been years since I've been overseas and I've been wanting to go back ever since. I really can't wait!

I know I need to do something with my drawings, though I'm not really sure what. It just seems to me that I've started stagnating at least with respect to drawing and sculpting

While there I saw a couple people from DA, namely Kaze-Hime (who always had a huge crowd around her and so was essentially impossible to approach), said Hi to Blackquadra but didn't really have much of a chance to talk, Stopped at Neomonki's table and took a peek through her fantastic sketch/ notebooks that she had out (I really can't stress enough how incredible those little books were with all of their ink sketches and notes, though it did probably help that the one was all notes from a trip to Florence, which I've been once and absolutely loved and would return to in an instant if the opportunity arose). Finally, last but definitely not least, I also talked a little with Kilara and gave her a bit of a hand at one point .

Aside from meeting people from DA I also went to Sonny Strait's panel on Saturday, the webcomics panel (I was the guy in the front row with the courier bag and beret on) and a panel on sunday run by Lars from Looking for Group, the lady who does 'Secrets of sorcerers' and one fellow whose name I didn't catch who among other things worked on the show Undergrads (I believe....it was either that or Clone High) after which Lars took a peek at my work and gave some very interesting and helpful comments(man did going up there make me nervous though, cause its one thing to anonymously show people online [who are also likely hobbiests like myself] drawings that you know have many weaknesses and a whole different matter showing someone who knows their stuff well and has been in the business for years) though sadly the other two panelists had to leave before I could really ask them anything.

Aside from that, its was pretty decent, I saw a whole bunch of Cosplayers (if you're interested in seeing some of my con photos just note or e-mail me and I'll pass you the link, though I didn't take a huge number of photos this year) and overall had some fun, though the saturday felt really subdued for some reason (it was probably in part because there were a number of people I was looking for whom I couldn't find at all, plus I never did manage to keep up with anyone long enough to really chat with them)

Also, while I'm thinking of it, does anyone know where one can get someone to review their work, as I know there's lots of flaws in mine and I would like to know how I might improve. In particular, it would be preferred if the person doing the reviewing/ critiquing knew their stuff was wasn't particularly derisive in their critique, because really what good is a critique that simply mocks one's efforts?


On a less cheerful note, my cat had to be put down this week. I haven't really had much opportunity to see her much, as the place I'm currently living at doesn't allow pets so I had to leave her with my parents. I'm just glad that I went home the weekend before AN, as I got to see her once more before she was put down.

The good news though is that the hard drives seem to be alright, though I can't seem to get past the protection on my own files (stupid 'my documents' and desktop folders are locked by windows unless I boot using that drive, which of course refuses to start up when I transplant the drive into another computer and so all of the files that I actually want the most are beyond my grasp) If anyone knows how to get past this, or even if something like MacOS ignores such protection, I'd appreciate it if you could tell me how.

Since this is the third time I've tried to revive this computer (first time the hard drive died, then the mother board died, now the motherboard and power source are dead) I decided to do the smart thing and buy a new computer. Also, given that I was tired of my machines up and dying on me all the time I went and ordered in one of the new generation IMacs, which I will finally get my hands on tomorrow evening!

All that said, I will also be disappearing in about a week or so when I head off to alaska for two weeks.

Anywho, back to work I go

That said, I have been managing to do some drawing and if you're interested you can check them out in my scraps gallery.

I've also been slowly chipping away at a comic idea that I've been playing with for quite a while now, though I can't really say that I have the slightest clue as to if I've got a reasonable approach, or even a doable idea. So for now I'm just trying to flesh out the major characters, perhaps do up some drawings of them, get some ideas for the storyline, environment and whatnot. Once I've done that, I might try to start drawing up pages for it. Pretty much the only thing thats really set in my mind for it are a couple of plot points, one of the environments it takes place in and that it will have a finite length from the get-go.

Other than that, I'll be at this year's Anime North and will be seeing my all time favorite musician/ songwriter, Loreena McKennitt live when she comes to preform in Toronto next month!

On the other hand though, I have managed to get a bit of work on my chainmaile prjects, namely I've gotten my one big project to a vest size, and am now working on sleeves for it (after that I'll be converting it into a full scale haubrek...but that'll be a while!) I've also managed to put together a pair of necklaces (one because I wanted to try out the particular weave I used in it, the other because my sister purchaced a pendant at some point and asked if I could ready it so it could be put on a necklace, and me being my usual self at the time went a bit overboard and made the chain to go with it ) I also have one other chain which is under works (this time my mom saw anouther one of my experimentations with new chain weaves and asked me to make it into a bracelet for her) heh....seems almost like I get to be the family jeweler.

Also, since I'm off to ottawa for anouther co-op, I may actually have some time to CG some of the drawings I've already done (no promises here, its more of a possibility than anything else) and perhaps I'll manage to get some inspiration for some new drawings. The first is that I would be gratefull if someone might critique my general drawing/ colouring style, the more in depth, the better, as I would really appreciate finding out what I'm doing right, and what needs some more work in the way of style, technique and whatnot.

The other challenge is that I would like to see how other people would colour some of the lineart that I draw. I would have liked to have made this a contest, but really, I dont have much in the way of stuff to offer as prizes. well, starting with music:

from .Hack
-Kioku-(memory) Just an incredible song, that sadly only ever shows up once in the liminality serise, but is beyond good.
-Senyaichia-(a thousand and one nights) anouther liminality opening, but also awesome, especially the opening part with the piano which gives it a powerful feeling of movement and purpose.
-in the land of twilight, under the moon- I personally love the poening and ending to this song, which sort've gives it a surreal, mysterious feeling.
-epitaph- just a sad, beautiful piano piece, but still very very good
-yasashii yoake- the ending to the .hack/sign serise, an incedible piece of music, just wounderfull.
-(?) wings- again from the .hack/sign serise, this is the theme for subaru, and is a wounderful guitar(perhaps mandolin, i'm not really sure) and vocal piece, definately anouther of my favorites.
-tokouka- from liminality, its a fun, kind've bizzare sax piece, with a sort've jazz feel.

from Final Fantasy: Unlimited :
-romancing train- this is the second ending for FF:U, its definaltely anouther great piece with a real sense of motion.
-Vivid- the first ending for FF:U, this is a really fun bit of music, and the video to go with it is really amusing, what it the little pixilated chocobos running around the screen
-Over the fantasy- again, anouther great piece and the video that goes with it is really cool as well, definately something a bit more artsy than the generic TV anime that shows up here in canada, at least that i've seen.

Slayers:
-Breeze- its slayers! and its music! what can i say, this is a great song!
-rebel against destiny- really neat instrumental piece
Other anime music:
-Wind- naruto ending, wounderful piece, everone knows it, what else can i say?
-HT- trigun opening, great song^^
-Kaze wa Mirai ni Fuku- trigun closing, a bizzare but really good song

Game music:
-dreams of a shore bordering anouther world- chronocross, beautiful song, especially the violin solo
-time of the dreamwatch- a excelent, epic moving piece
-the deciesive battle- the black mages version, really cool rock remix of the boss battle theme from final fantasy 6/3, the best FF ever!
-if you still believe- from legend of dragoon, great vocal piece.

other music:
-In the end- linkin park, the best song the ever did, and sadly played so often that i suspect many people hate it now.
-the highwayman- by lareena mckennit, a longtime favorite of mine which takes a classic poem and puts it to music, the only qualm is that one of the paragraphs was removed.
-Vapor trails- rush, ummm....i've run out of good things to say, but this is a reat song still^^

Anywho, after that we went to toronto and met up with a couple other friends, especially one guy who was cosplaying as sasuke from naruto. anywho, i had a blast at the con bowing bout $200 in the first day(i didnt actually spend much more after that, but meh) on manga and CD's(i finally found the Chronocross soundtrack! Woot!) later i came across a friend of mine who i hadn't seen in ages(who if anyone was woundering, was cosplaying as vash from trigun[heh...he spent most of his time at the con having his picture taken by other people]) Anywho, since the guy who i went to the cottage with's dad decided to come along only for the first day we ended up with an extra pass(which as it happens i ended up giving to one girl who had misplaced hers[...i ended up getting glomed for that ^^''....fear the evil glomping....]) anywho, overall i had a great time there and do plan on coming back.....and maybe, just maybe i'll cosplay as Kaneda from akira....

And then just recently Cionex left this time because some of his great stuff had simular poses to a couple other more famous people's art... but wait, even if he did copy the poses, isn's mimmicing other people's style just anouther way of improving and developing your own? so should he really be deivin away just because of the way he was trying to improve his art? anyways, i'm pretty sure that there's only so many poses around in the world, and eventually if you look hard enough you're gonna find one that looks almost exactly like anouther.
Also, I personally believe that if someone is going to just harass an artist untill they finally decide to leave then they should bear the blame because a community of artisits is not there to dive others away but to gather them together and help them to become known and to improve themselves. The only kind of people who should be driven away are the ones who intentionally harass others and those who purposesly copy other people's art in majority, not just a small thing like a pose but something a bit bigger than that, and claim it for their own work.
Seriously, if this keeps up the only people who will be left on DA and places like it will be the people who harass others and the theifs
