Another thing about 'lol', is that when somebody else says it, you have to say it back:

1: my cat just died.
2: lol
1: (uh) lol
1: no seriously..it just died yesterday
2: oh...

Even if someone says something that you don't find extremely funny you still say 'lol':

1: remember when...(blah blah blah)
2: yeah, lol
But you're really just sitting at your computer with a little smile on your face, not actually 'laughing out loud'.

It's actually a pretty lame excuse for a response. In a real life conversation someone might say something funny and you'd respond by laughing, and the maybe extending the joke or making another joke. In an online conversation however:

1: i nearly put my lunch in the garbage instead of my dirty napkin
2: lol
1: (...)
2: (...)

So I pretty much dislike the expression because its really just pure laziness. But you know what? I use it all the time.
