Hello everyone!

Small update.

I lost interest in the work on dA. Just go around checking what friends have posted up. Sorry if I haven't been commenting on your work.

I finally graduated (YAY!!!) and I'm doing freelance photography work now.

I am getting my first photo printed in the November issue of brownbook magazine..

Its nothing fancy, they just wanted a general shot of the RTA Metro construction site in front of Bur Juman, but it feels good to get something out.

I'm also working on a travel guide with them, and I'm in charge of photography all over Dubai.

So pick up the November issue of brownbook and show your support. Ask for more photos done by me!!!

AND, on a more important note, I want to have a Nutella party.

You come along, with your own jar, and you chill and hang out with everyone else who is there.

So far the date set is 1st of December, and the location is set for Za'abeel park. Its nice, big, and most importantly, CLEAN! Yes, that means their toilets as well.

This isn't a dA meeting, but I would love to have any of you guys there as well, so please come along, or you can search for it on Facebook under my events.

Hope this leaves you well..

Hello everyone.

Just finished my last submission (I think) yesterday. Still waiting for a response on another submission that we found out about yesterday.

It was one bitch of a semester that took the life out of me. Hopefully the result will be a positive one.

Had one major photography project on bikers. The result was a 20+ book of photos. Hopefully going to put up the series as soon as I am buggered.

Didn't shoot alot for my person this semester, but hopefully it'll come back to me during the summer.

Life is changing, and I am on the crossroads. Don't know what I will be doing, but I do know it's going to be one hell of a ride.

I apologize for everyone who has great work up there who I have not seen. I have over 2200 deviations to go through. Hopefully I'll get to see them all.
Hope this leaves you well.

All SLR users have the benefit of using a light metre.

Note that the photographers didn't have that privilege. A lot of old photographers never had that, so they learned how to metre the light with their eyes. A number of TLRs and medium format cameras would not have a light metre, so you had to buy one and attach it as an accessory.

My TLR doesn't have a light metre. I use the spot metre from my Yashica FX-3.

Anyway, cameras have three kinds of metring systems.

1. Spot.

2. Centrewieght.

3. Full matrix.

Spot metre:

As the name indicates, it metres only a SPOT of the image. The light metre is usually placed dead centre. On my Yashica FX-3 it is in the middle of the frame, where the split-image/micro-prism focus area is. This is the metre that is usually found in external light metres that are used in the studio.

2. Centrewieght:

This is similar to the spot metre, but it covers a bit more area. It also is in the middle of the frame. In dSLRs this is in the area that is around the centre indicator in view finder.

3. Full matrix:

The full matrix system is one that tells you how much light there is in the ENTIRE frame. The light metre measures how much light is coming in the entire shot and gives you a reading.

All light metres are calibrated to give you a reading that equals to zone IV, or roughly around 15% gray. That means if you shoot a white wall by following the light settings that the camera gave you, you would get a picture of a wall that is 15% gray.

Each of these metres have their advantages.

I personally prefer spot on my film camera. The reasoning behind that is because i have more control over what I am shooting since I shoot a lot indoors and in low light.

See, it is better to use full matrix when you are shooting in a place that has steady lighting, such as outdoor in the sun, since it is continious it will be more advantagous to use full matrix. That doesn't mean you can't use anything else. I still use spot metring. However, be careful when you are standing in the sun shooting shade or the other way round. A lot of light metres get fooled, especially full matrix, since the shade and the sunlit areas give different readings, it might give you a reading that might not give you what you want.

The reason I like spot is simple, because then I can use the Zone System easily. Using spot is simple, I point the centre of the frame onto what I want to expose, and I metre. This lets me use the Zone system ruling of having the shadow with detail area. I just metre and I step down by one stop and I shoot. Very helpful.

However when you are using a dSLR it is a bit different. Having the camera on P and shooting in sequence will give you problems if you aren't using full-matrix or exposure lock. I was shooting a bunch of bikers a while back and they were passing by my camera and I had it on continious. When I looked at the pictures, I realized that most of them didn't have the same exposure, or rather, most of them didn't have the same look in terms of lighting, even though everything was stationary and the only factor that was changing was the bikes passing by.

It turns out its from the metring system I had. On spot, the camera metred exactly the middle of the frame, and since that was changing the whole time, it gave me a variation of picture lighting. If I had full matrix on I wouldn't have gotten such a variation. It might still be there, but it wouldn't be that wide.

First take a look at what you want to shoot, and choose what you want. I choose full matrix for sun light, and spot for everything else.

Sometimes I stay spot if there isn't a lot of constrast in my scene.

Canon vs. Nikon

After a heated discussion with a friend on the dSLR ranges offered by Nikon and Canon, I thought I'd give some info on these two brands, and recommendations based on your usage.

Note that everything here is based on my experience and opinions of the cameras.

First of all, both brands have a good range of dSLR cameras.

The latest is the Nikon D80 and the D200, while Canon have the Digital Rebel XTi (400 D outside the USA), and the EOS 1D Mark III.

A lot of users think the Rebel series equals the top amatuer Nikon range (i.e. D70s/D80).

Not true. While they are both in the same price range, performance is VERY different. The EOS 400 is more equal to D40 or the D50 from the Nikon range.

The Canon cameras have a better sensor than the Nikons, and is capable of picking up better colours and details, especially when it comes to colour balance.

Note that pixels refer to how clear a picture is, as in the resolution is just an indication of how many pixels will be available in a picture. This does not necessarily mean that the higher the resolution, the more details will show in a photo. The details are dependant on how good the sensor is.

A good analogy is to imagine that the sensor records the details, while the pixels tell you how accurate they are.

Now, for the camera itself, I personally prefer the Nikon bodies, as the lower range Canons are like toys to me. I love the ergonomics of the D70/80/100/200.

Anything lower than the D70 is annoying. The D50 comes to mind. Since it only has one dial, its not fast enough in street situations where you need to change your aperture as well as your shutter speed. With the four mentioned above, the camera has two dials which you can move using your right hand. In fact the entire process just takes three fingers.

The EOS 300/350/400 has a great sensor, and can pick up colours very well, but it is a horrible little body thing, and you feel like you're playing with a toy. Not veryeffective and nice to use. It also has a huge 1.7 crop factor, which kills all the lenses you use on it.

The D50/70/80/100/200 have a great body, but its only in the 80/200 do they have a sensor that can compare to the EOS cameras. While the D70 is a great piece of work, and I recommend it for its price, it goes back to what you need.

As an overall prospect, Nikon is better for the studio since you can control the light, while Canon is better for the field since it is VERY rugged and gives you more accurate colours.

Whats the point of a Nikon you say then?

Well I am more comfortable with the Nikons because of their bulkiness. I hate small cameras, and with the new softer noice in high ISO in the D80, I think its a great choice.

Personal opinion?

If it was up to me, I'd get a D80 and an EOS 1D Mark III. The D80 would mostly be in the studio, while the EOS would be for the field.

It all boils down on how much bang per buck you want to get. The Canon cameras have the legendary L glass which I have to say is FUCKING sexeh.

If anyone needs any more clarification, please let me know.

Hey guys,

Been busy as hell with university work and all.

Have lots to put up, just haven't had the time to sit and work on them and put them up.

Glad to say that my development and printing skills are getting better, I just need to work on my communication and compositional skills and learn how to shoot faster.

Doing a project on the bikers of the UAE, so if anyone has any contacts, please let me know, I'd be grateful.

Been reading a great book lately called "The Practical Zone System" that tells you how to get properly contrasted images with good exposure.

Thought I'd share this with you folks, as this works with both film and digital, be it colour or black and white.

EXPOSE FOR YOUR SHADOWS!!

When you are shooting a picture, always expose for your shadows.

See, the camera light metre is set to what is known as 18% gray. As in, if you put a white card in front of the camera (filling the view finder), and you choose the settings that the camera tells you to, the white card will LOOK 18% GRAY. This is known as middle gray, or Zone IV.

The zone system was developed by Ansel Adams, and works by saying pitch black is Zone O, and white is Zone IX. All the other shades fall in zones in between.

Zone III is known as the important shadow detail zone. When you exposing for a shot, check which part of the image you want to be Zone III, or which part you want to be dark, yet has details showing. When you choose that, take a light reading, and step it down by ONE STEP.

When the light metre measured that area, it gave you the settings to get that part of the shot at Zone IV. Since the zone system is laid out the same way the aperture and shutter speeds on a camera are, all you have to do is underexpose the frame by one step, and that area is set to Zone III.

Now, as for DEVELOPING the image, that is different. I will talk about that later, and doing it in digital still applies.

If any of this is not clear, just go online and try to get a grasp on the Zone System. After that, everything else falls into place, and its pretty simple.

Cheers.

Hello everyone.

It has been one crazy ass semester. You can probably tell that from my low level of activity.

Very horrible. Busy with all the work that I did.

BUT... It ended in a very good manner. Sorta seeing someone, passed my courses, shot over 15 rolls of film, fixed all my cameras, and used a Leica R7.

Scanned in some shots today, hopefully going to post them up after I finish cleaning them up (never knew the water we have in the darkroom is so dirty).

Plus I managed to figure out how the school's negative scanner works, so expect a lot of pictures.

Planned a few trips during the break to shoot all this time. Also have a book to print out. Going to print out a bunch of images based on the extra year I have in AUS.

Managed to push process film. No longer have to wait for Salam Studios to get me 3200 film anymore, but would be interesting to see how it would look like if I push it to 6400.

Planning a few trips to AD to shoot some more. Aiming for 10-15 rolls of film in one month.

Hope this leaves you all well. Till next time, keep shooting.

Hey everyone.

Finally hit the 3k+ mark. Milestone for me.

Almost two years of browsing and posting.

Also won a 35mm rangefinder of the Net for 50 dhs. The ap. dial is not working, but hopefully I'll be getting it fixed soon. Thats what I love about mechanical cameras, no digital or electronic parts to be changed. Repair is simple and easy. Can be done at home, but better at the hands of a pro cause they have better warranty than you do.

Also got back the medium format roll I shot with my TLR. The negatives look promising. That was my first time using medium format, and little did I know that the same roll can shoot different sizes, and that depends on the camera support, not the film it self. A lot of overlapping involved in it. I can get about two or three images of it, just waiting for the photography professor to come back and check if we have medium format support on the enlargers in university so I can hit the darkroom. Been so long. I got a wiff of the chemicals last week and nostalgia hit me. I miss the dark room. And I will finally be able to tell if the exposure is accurate or not. The TLR is so old-school it doesn't have a light metre. Some of the shots were done by me guessing the exposure (which worked on some) and by developing an exposure system using the Nikon light metre. (For those who don't know, focal length, film ISO, and lens type has effect on exposure. The Sigma is a twin-dial tele-photo, with 7 lens elements; the TLR is a single twin-convex lens, so you have to compensate when working with a light metre from a TTL camera.)

For more info please let me know, it's not that complicated as long as you are using good lenses (i.e. either all plastic lenses or all glass lenses and not mixing plastic with glass. Plastic absorbs more light than glass, causing internal reflection, which in turn causes less light to reach the light metre, giving you a reading that will over-expose a shot on a glass lens if you were using the same readings.)

University is back, and hectic as hell. I'm repeating some courses from last year, and by god they have changed. So much to do, I haven't been able to keep my dA status up to date. I have over 900 deviations to check out. Thanks for all the comments and faves from everyone.

I recieved the shock of my life the other day. I was sitting with my fellow seniors and they asked me about my antique cameras.

THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT SLR MEANS. THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT TLR MEANS. THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT RANGEFINDER MEANS.

I almost got a heart attack. These are all senior students, most of them who are doing photography as a concentration. All they know is how to shoot in digital and strip saturation in PS. Fucking posers. No more soul can be found in photography anymore.

[link] It's a photography forum for the UAE! Yes I am surprised, and a bit pleased. That is until I looked at the forum. All digital users. Whatever happened to the passion of film for cryin' out loud? Everyone wants everything quick and fast. No one enjoys the process anymore.

Hopefully should be working with ~Ubenta on a portrait of ~Yaranak. Going to try a vingette technique which I have never done before. In the darkroom, with an enlarger, without Photoshop. Yes, I am going old-school.

I mean, I consider myself an artist. I trully do. I finally can call myself one. Call me arrogant. I don't give a fuck. You can go screw yourself. Where's the fun in just shooting digital and clicking a few buttons and then posting it? Not to mention the clarity issue that just about rapes every digital photograph there is. I mean, I get a camera, I use it EXACTLY the way I use a film camera, and I get the most HORRIBLE clarity on the face of the planet. Question that pops up is, should I use Photoshop to improve my shots? Does taht make me a better photographer? It's not taking the picture.

Erwin Puts once said "image-making has a very different connotation from picture-taking".

I remember in the darkroom I would just get the exposure right and shoot a picture. Then I would go develope the film and make the print. No fancy effects. Just get the contrast right. How? Get pure white and pure black in the same shot. If applicable. If you have middle gray in your picture, it means that you don't have any dark in your image. Then again, the 18% gray question comes up and that is where the photographer should be in control of exposure.

For those who don't know the 18% gray concept, basically all light metres give you a reading of "right" exposure. All this means is that the light metre will give you a reading where pure white will be shot at 18% gray, as in 18% of the opacity of black. Th...

BUT YOU SCHMUCKS WHO DIDN'T JOIN YOU MISSED OUT...

Johnny Rockets was awesome. Had a double patty St. Louis and then went for some Marble Slab. Double Suicide right there.

Went for shisha after that and stayed out till 2 am in the morning. Great night.

Summer is almost over. Got five more days of work left, then back to university. Can't wait. Going back into the darkroom. Hopefully I'll have interesting shots to post up and show everyone.

Also, I bought a nice antique Chinese TLR from Souq.com. Very nice, medium format, ultra sexy. I just finished my first roll of film in it, going to get it developed and hopefully it works fine without any light leaks.

Still waiting for my other 35mm SLR to arrive. Should be here end of summer. Can't wait.

Till then, hope all of you are well and in best of health.

Peace.

Yes, I know it's been a long time.

A lot has happened.

Took three courses last semester, got two B's and a B+.

Dated, broke up, started playing cards, got addicted to playing cards, still playing cards, now looking for a job.

Nothing so far.

Anyway, the purpose behind this is I am planning on having a meeting for photographers across the country.

If interested, please pass the news around and copy the following on your journal, and send me a note and keep me up to date on who wants to join.

I was talking earlier to a fellow deviant, =eliXile, and an idea struck me. We have a lot of photographers on deviantART from the UAE, so why not have a get together of all of us. The point behind this is to just get us together and discuss photography, and have a good meal and some fun.

The meeting would involve us discussing camera related issues, pictures, photographers, and individual work. If this becomes more often, we would also begin to feature a photographer every meeting from various genres of the field.

By all means, this is not intended only for dA users, but for all photographers all around.

The first meeting is set on the 10th of June. Time and place is still to be announced. If you are interested, please send me a note with your name and your contact, or just add me on MSN or e-mail me on f_jundi@yahoo.co.uk.

The success of these meetings depends on your participation!

Hope to hear from you all!

Isn't it amazing how many new deviations are submitted daily on dA?
That the amount of people who are interested in dA increases daily?
And the fact that so many artists have found a platform to dicuss and present their work to others?

Without a doubt it's a big, interesting and versatile community.
But isn't it amazing to always see the same artists on the frontpage every single day concerning the fact that so many new deviations have been submitted?

We're all aware of that and believe that this has to change. It is already quite difficult for the "unknown" artists to promote their work and gain more attention.

Clearly, we do not intend to deny the skills of those great artists who enrich the community by sharing their magnificent work. But we do intend to enhance the platform in such a way that "unknown" artists might get a real chance to draw the public attention to their own pieces of work by promoting it on the front page of the community.

In our opinion we think it unjust to only have the chance to be represented on the front page if one has the luck of having many watchers.

We would like a better system which allows a deviation to be seen on the front page if, for example, it has 'only' reached about 40 favourites and about 200 views.

Take a look at the actual situation: You have uploaded an impressive piece or art that gets faved according to the number of your total views/watchers. Then, however, a more popular deviant uploads a more or less 'average' deviation and automatically reaches more than the double of your favourites/views in a mere moment.

A new structure of the frontpage could enhance the actual competition on dA, i.e. popular deviants wouldn't be able to best the "unknown" artists by posting a rather average deviation.

A reasonable alternative to present the "daily top favourites" on the front page would be a bigger amount of thumbs which would show the 40 best deviations of the day in a random order.

We think it's in everyone's interest to change the current situation and make dA a place where creating and sharing unique art plays a far bigger role than scrambling for new watchers.

My grandfather passed away an hour ago.

It doesn't bother me that much. He's been living on machines for the past six months or so.

Still doesn't bother me. The more I think about it, the more I realize it doesn't bother.

I accept death.

I'm just worried...

Worried about my father...

My father...

He's been through a lot so far...

This semester he had to sell our house in Syria, which took him 25 years of savings, so he can actually own, just so he can pay for my university tuitions...

What's even worse? I might have to do one extra year because I'm failing a course.

Yesterday was the final exhibition of that course. It was a good opening. I realized my work is SHIT. I wasn't happy with it once I saw other people's work.

Why though?

I mean, you work, and you think you have a great concept, but once you actually get it done physically, you realize it's not all that. All the while everyone around has work that is fantastic, and you just sit there with the shittiest work in the exhibition.

All that's left is fear. Fear of the grade. Fear that I might fail the course and do one extra year for it. My dad can't take that.

My dad...

I guess I look up to him more than I thought. Everyone tends to love him. It's amazing. All my girl friends meet him and fall in love with him. All my guy friends think he's the coolest dad on the planet. I just find him loving. I haven't talked to him a lot. This summer we did talk about topics we never talked about before. God knows when was the last time I kissed or hugged him.

My dad...

I love him. Plain and simple. The fact that he's going to go through a LOT because of the death just kills me on the inside. I'm even thinking of going to my professor and begging him to pass me this course just so he won't feel the disappointment.

It's wierd. I can accept death more than my father. My father is a surgeon. I guess it's just deaths that are outside the immediate family that don't really effect me that much. I had a friend pass away during the summer. Didn't feel that bad either...

When I got the call this morning, I just felt upset and worried. Worried about my dad, and upset for my dad. I sometimes think I'm just too selfish. I turned selfish. I don't know why. I think it's because of my ex. It's funny how a fucked up heart can change your perception of things, and how you start turning selfish because being nice actually fucked you up once before. I've just had enough of people walking all over me. If that makes me into the world's biggest asshole, then I accept that.

I stopped my bullshit talk. I just give it honestly and straight forward. No more side talk. Just get to the point and move on. You'll be surprised at how much time a person will waste just trying to get to a point. This is precious time you could be using to do something useful in your fucking life.

Go out. Have fun. Life's too short to be pissed off all the time. Edward Norton said that. American History X... I love that line.

Support your folks, love your family, and tell people how much they mean to you. One day you'll kick the bucket and you will never be able to do that again.

And above all, enjoy life to the fullest...

2. I'll tell you what song/movie reminds me of you.
Movie: Sin City

3. I'll say something that only makes sense to you and me.
.."Don't scare him away."

4. I'll tell you my first/clearest memory of you.
Some guy running all over the place in Evolution.

5. I'll tell you what animal you remind me of.
Squirrel. Or a meerkat.

6. I'll ask you something that I've always wondered about you.
Why're you so persistant? I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I'm just wondering where you get that patience from.

7. If I do this for you, you must post this on your journal. You MUST. It is written.

Yes I know its been a long time but hey, sue me.

Haven't taken pictures in ages. Saw a few galleries of a few mates. My shutter finger is itching again.

I miss Abu Dhabi. Best place in the country to shoot pictures. Not to mention the people are nice, and the girls are hot. No, not all, but better than Dubai.

Finally managed to sort out through a whole bunch of crap on my laptop and found a few pieces I thought about submitting. I still need to scan in my second year photographs and put those up.

I hate summers in this country. There really is nothing to do. Been going to BarZar on a weekly basis for the past month and a half. Well, at least I get a free drink every night. Thats not bad.

Met up with elixile yesterday at BarZar. Miss you prick. We should get together more often. All of use "metalheads". Titles, titles.

Still doing my summer internship. I finished my 240 hours, but they want me here since they might have a commercial shoot next month. I still didn't even register for my fall semester. Hopefully, I'll finish this and register, then start. Final year, and I graduate. Need to start work so I can get enough cash to leave this hell hole for now. I'll be coming back sometime, but not now. Not soon at all.

Thinking of going to Canada to study Classics in a few years time. Doing some research lately. A few ideas and places here and there...

Got invited to California in two summer's time for my birthday!! That should be worth something.

Anyways, just a small update.

Hopefully more to come...
