A STUDY OF THE PATRON SAINT OF IRELAND

Saint Patrick was born somewhere around 389 AD, in Western Britain. He was the son of a Christian deacon, but at the age of sixteen, Patrick was kidnapped by Irish raiders. The unfortunate youth found himself enslaved and spent the next six years herding sheep in Ireland. He managed to escape however, and landed in Gaul, (what we now call France) where he became a monk. Patrick went on to become a deacon and finally a bishop.
About 419 AD, Patrick had a dream which called upon him to convert the Irish (the very people who had taken away his freedom as a youth). Thus, began his life as a missionary. Now, Patrick wasn't the first missionary to Ireland, but he was certainly the most successful. By all accounts, the man had incredible courage. Instead of tolerating the pagan practices of the local druids, Patrick openly defied them. A turning point in Irish history occurred when Patrick lit an Easter fire in Tara. It was on the day that the first fire was supposed to be lit by the druid king. Instead of punishing Patrick's insolence, the king was impressed by his faith and courage. The king protected the bishop and his work from that day on.
Legends have been handed down as to the means that Patrick used to convert the druids of Ireland. The best known was that the Saint drove all the snakes out of Ireland, but the one that is dear to me is the way he used the three leaves of the shamrock to explain the Trinity of God to the druid king. You see each leaf of the shamrock is an individual leaf, but each leaf is every bit as much of the one shamrock as the others. Our God is God The Father, God The Son, and God The Holy Spirit. Each one as much a part of the One God as the others. However it happened, Patrick gained the support of the king of Tara, and ministered to the needs of the Christians already in Ireland. The Saint went on to make many converts in Ulster, Connaught, and finally established his see in Armagh.
Yes, there's wonderful legends surrounding Patrick, but the facts we have are equally impressive! In 33 years, he effectively converted all of Ireland. His ties with the Church brought Ireland into closer contact with Rome and acquainted the Irish with the culture of Western Europe. As a result of Saint Patrick's work, the monasteries of Ireland were great storehouses of knowledge during the Dark Ages. Further, throughout the Middle Ages, the country was known as the Land of Saints.

WebComics Super 100 List ! ('course, it dropped back to #7, but it was #6 for awhile!) The point must be made that the fans of my comic were really courageous to speak out for me on that listing. I say this because my critics there made the situation so personal. When flaming my work didn't stop me, some of my hecklers went after my viewers and started saying horrible things about the readers of When Foxes Fly . It didn't scare away my fans however, and I think it may have even caused some of my readers to speak up on my behalf! I also would like to point out that the
WebComics Super 100 List was not to blame for the unfair criticism I was receiving. The Management there was actually very helpful! They even removed one of the most vicious comments posted against me, agreeing that it did indeed cross the line. They assured me that they didn't want that kind of foul language on their site. It was nice to know that they backed up their standards and would remove comments which went too far.
My family is having a difficult time right now. My brother in law has been struggling with cystic fibrosis all his life and is now in the hospital. The Doctors say his lung capacity is down to 13% and he's really in bad shape. Please pray for him, as well as us, his family. I really appreciate it.

WebComics Super 100 List . The nice things you had to say didn't fall on deaf ears, and I do appreciate them.
As far as my critics go, (at the WebComics Super 100 List) at least they've gotten a little more specific. I must be doing pretty good, 'cause the most they've come up with are slurs at my writing and the fact that I use MS Paint. ('course, the writing critiques still aren't really specific, they just called it 'bad' writing) After getting my degree in media from The University of South Carolina, (a degree which has a foundation of courses in writing for media productions) it doesn't really break my heart when an anonymous person simply calls my writing 'bad'. Likewise, the sneering at my use of MS Paint doesn't really disturb me, (especially when an experienced eye could also see traces of GIMP and PIXIA in my later pages). has a wonderful journal entry entitled, Too Good Not To Share , which provides the perfect answer to those criticizing me for the tools I use.
Don't know what hornet's nest I stirred up just by making the top ten list at
WebComics Super 100 List , but as wisely said, "When you get tomatoes, make tomato soup!

I've had a lot of nasty remarks hurtled my way, (even on DA) but this is the first time I felt forced to submit a formal complaint. I have no proof, but I have a pretty good idea where it all comes from. You see, the comments section for my comic didn't get spammed with trash comments and ratings until "When Foxes Fly" made the Top Ten List. True, I can take criticism, but the comments themselves were simply 'garbage'. I figure it's a bunch of sour grapes, 'cause when you make the top ten, you are inevitably there in place of someone else. Anyone who wants to see these comments for themselves click on WebComics Super 100 List and then go to the "When Foxes Fly" banner and click on the "comments" link. Be warned, the comment by Dr Light on October 1, 2006 is particularly harsh. (That's the one I formally complained about). While you're there, please leave a comment and a rating. Okay, enough feeling sorry for m'self! It's been a great three first weeks in July! My younger son shot fireworks on the fourth, and he got some really beautiful roman candles. As if that wasn't enough, my family took me to see the "Pirates" and then a week or so later my eldest son took me to see the "Superman"! That may not seem much to most folks, but I'm a fellow with very little money in my pocket. When we see fireworks and two movies in one month, that's big for me and my wife! We have gooooooooood kids!

I've done quite a bit of soul searching on this, and I think the time has come to share what I believe happened on the first day of creation. I was confused about it for a long time, and feel perhaps there are others in the same position. Another point persuading me, is the preaching done by people who are basically adding to the scriptures their own speculations and have little evidence backing them up. If these people are truly led by the Holy Spirit, then before all of you I ask God's Forgiveness and request to be shown a Better Way.
In any event, let us examine the Creation Story on a verse by verse basis:

KJV Genesis 1:1-5
Genesis 1

1. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Note that The Bible mentions in one complete statement that God created the heaven and the earth. The statement stands as is. Yet in the next verse It is written that the earth was without form.

2. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

This confused me. It says God Created the heaven and earth, but how could the earth be created if it had no form? Further, how could the heavens be created if darkness were on the face of the deep? No stars? No celestial bodies to give light?

3. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Okay, so now we apparently have the stars. My question still plaqued me. How could God create the heaven without celestial bodies? After all, space by itself is considered a void. Many have tried to explain this. I've heard it said that the perspective was told from man's point of view on earth, that is the stars weren't visible until the mist and smoke cleared on the earth revealing the light, as well as the surface of the earth. That's a good attempt, but not befitting the absolute statements given in these first verses. The earth "was" void, not the earth "looked" void. I've also heard the explanation that something displeased God with his first creation of the earth, and that Genesis is leaving out the part that something caused the earth to become void, formless, and without light. So He basically had to recreate creation. With all due respect to those folks, that's not what the Bible says, and I don't believe something as important an event as that would be left out of the Holy Scriptures. In all fairness, these folks use the logic that God is never without light and light continually surrounds Him. They also point out that if God Creates anything it is never void. I agree that God's Glory and Magnificence surrounds Him like an intense light beyond light, but The Bible also says that He Created light on the first day, so again their speculations don't match the Scriptures.

4. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

Wow, this verse was once again thought provoking! How did light and darkness ever exist together without being separated? Isn't darkness the lack of light and therefore always separate from light? Believe it or not, this verse gave an early clue to my understanding what God was saying about His Creation of everything!

5. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

And there we have it, the actual creation of the first day and everything it took to make a day, a day. It disturbed me for a long time that the verses didn't fit in a way for me to comprehend it. I knew that there was something more in the way God's Word told me He created everything. Something told me that there was a scientific viewpoint which would help me understand what God was telling us about that first day!

Recently, I began to think about the rather unusual point of view I have about experts, particularly in the field of the sciences. Some of you, but probably not all of you may have even witnessed how I've been flamed in my discussions with nonChristians about how I don't believe in evolution and question the time table of geologists and paleontologists. When I've brought up recent studies and theories about this, I've gotten simple comments. I call them simple because they're basically just saying I'm one of those stupid Christians questioning experts who know far more than I do, and if there was something wrong with their theories, they would have already found it. Well, it's made me realize that perhaps as a society, we've put our experts on such a high pedestal, that they become something totally infallible in their own field. When you consider that God is the only being infallible, what does that say about our relationship with our experts? I'm sorry, but I can't believe that about our scientists, or any other specialist.
I suppose part of what shaped my point of view on this, has to do with my dealings with experts while I was in the USAF. Now, before I begin this tale, I want to point out that I have a very high regard for engineers. They go through a lot of education, and have a great deal of knowledge needed to design devices no one has ever seen before. I also need to point out that I had very diverse training in electronics while in the Air Force, because my field was in Metrological Maintenance (a field they may or may not have now, because there was talk about blending it with another field while I was there). Anyway, in that field, we worked on anything from wind sensors to weather radar, so our training was on three generations of electronics, (everything from tubes to integrated circuits) and admittedly this gave me some advantages in my dealings with the experts. Now, the experts I keep referring to, were the engineers designing computerized versions of a lot of our weather sensing equipment. It was my honor to be part of the test project since some of the prototypes were installed at my base. It was great, as I helped with the installation, and learned a lot of theory behind a new device. I noticed though, that the engineers, (even though they were brilliant men) lacked a little flexibility in their logic. The best story I have to use as an example would be about a problem we had with a light sensor. You see, this particular piece of equipment had to be on a pole near the runway, so it was required to have a light in order to be seen at night. This safety light was equipped with a sensor which turned it on at night, and off during the day (a pretty simple design, I had seen similar electronics since other devices had light sensitive diodes). Anyway, once it was installed, one of the engineers and I had to test the safety light. I covered the sensor with my hands and the light was supposed to come on. The light didn't work. After we changed the bulb with no better results, we figured it must be the sensor. As we walked back to the ROS, the engineer was wondering why the design of the sensor was flawed. I said I would open it up and look at it if that was alright, and he said go ahead if I wanted, but he had to call their home office and get the team to work on a redesign. So, while he was on the phone, I took my tools back out to the prototype, and opened the sensor. Yep, light sensing diodes can't work if one of the wires isn't connected. I connected the loose wire, closed up the sensor, and covered it with my hands. The light came on. The engineer saw it from the ROS, and came out to meet me and congratulate me for fixing the problem. Now, don't get me wrong, he knew a lot (and I mean a lo-o-o-o-o-o-ot) more about electronics than I did, but my experience in troubleshooting gave me more flexibility. Now, that story was about a field where I had a little background related to that of the experts. This next is about a subject I had little or no background.
One of the biggest problems of weather sensing equipment is birds. When you have miles of flat land and no trees, and out in the middle of that is something sticking up sometimes 20 or 30 feet, birds like to perch on it. Hence, the old equipment was usually designed with bird spikes. Now that sounds bad, but they are only thin six inch spikes positioned on the equipment so that there are no comfortable places for the birds to perch. No birds are harmed by the spikes. Anyway, the prototypes didn't have the spikes, and every time I went out to the one installed near the runway, I saw flocks of birds fighting for the highest perch on the equipment. 1. I'm an old man looking through the eyes of a child.
2. I take pleasure in simple things, and long for simplicity of life, yet I'm, (sigh), complicated...
3. Above all, I am a Christian! Yet, I am also a veteran. Some of my opinions of certain wars may tend to be unpopular and not politically correct (and some may believe unChristian) but they come from much research and fact gathering over several years. At one time my views on these matters were very politically correct, but they came from listening to flawed info formed by people who didn't know what the wars were really about. It was only when I looked at what started those wars in the first place, that I changed my opinion. (Told you I was complicated)
4. I suffer from agoraphobia, but I love the outdoors.
5. I am an ex dungeon master, (ie.Advanced Dungeons and Dragons). Turned away from it long ago, 'cause it tempted me too much toward the darkness.

1. Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 18, and find line 4.

Well, it didn’t say that the book had to be a published one, so my sketch book is right beside me! It’s a book of sketches I do of “Lost Legends” characters which I use as a reference so that all my characters in “Lost Legends of Whoelterran” have a consistent look. Page 18 doesn’t have a line 4, but the sketch is of fairies and the second line says ‘typical fairies’. That’s because in the next chapter of that comic, I’ll introduce one of the villains who happens to be a fairy! And for those of you who feel that fairies can’t be villains, I reference the black fairy of “Sleeping Beauty”! Anyway, for a look at “Lost Legends” click on the link at the end of this journal.

The dishwasher.

About an hour ago, I was putting the family dog out in the yard.

Striped shirt, jeans and slippers.

10. Did you dream last night?

Yes, something about helping this group rebuild an alien spacecraft. Funny, cause when we tried to activate it, the sound it made turned into my alarm clock/radio going off.

11. When did you last laugh?

You know I really can’t pin it down. I always find something to laugh about each day, but remembering it?

12. What is on the walls of the room you are in?

Okay, there’s a picture my son did in pastels, a mirror, ceramic picture made in England, a framed tile picture we picked up in Spain (of the castle in Toledo), and some photos of the grounds of a monastery we visited in Spain.

13. Seen anything weird lately?

The page I’m currently working on for “Lost Legends”.

14. What do you think of this quiz?

It helps me realize that I should pay a little more attention to the details of my life.

15. What is the last film you saw?

“The Last of The Mohicans” on DVD.

16. If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy?

First, I would tithe. Next, I feel that one of the duties God has given me is to see to the security of my family. After that, I would set up an office and equipment to start a business that would be dedicated to The Lord. Something in reference to my artwork and writing.

17. Tell me something about you that I don’t know.

I’ve been to most of the countries in Europe, spoke German pretty well when I was six years old (sadly I’ve forgotten it now), am a veteran, have an associates degree in fine arts and education, a bachelor’s degree in media arts, a certified CADD operator, have a 5 level in electronics (worked on weather sensing equipment in the USAF), although I was raised white (and that’s how I appear) I also have ancestry in two Native American tribes (Cherokee and Catawba), and by basic nature I’m a very shy person (although I seem to constantly fight my bashful tendencies).

18. If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt or politics, what would you do?

Throw out Satan and his forces.

19. Do you like to dance?

When I could dance, I enjoyed it. I’m disabled now, so I can’t really dance at this time.

20. George Bush:

In my opinion, far better than the President before him! Haven’t heard him try to debate the meaning of the word ‘is’ yet.

21. Imagine your first child is a girl, what do you call her?

Probably the same as my daughter now, Pamela.

22. Imagine your first child is a boy, what do you call him?

My first child was a boy, and his name is Samuel.

5. I still remember my Marvel Comics Collection from the 1970’s and kick myself for giving it away when I was a dumb kid. ‘groan’ I had the origin of Morbius when he was introduced as a villain in “The Amazing Spiderman”. That was when John Romita was the artist for Spiderman. “sigh” now that was comic book art!

6. I have a bachelor’s degree in media arts.

7. I have an associate’s degree in art education.

8. I have a certificate in computer aided drafting, (mechanical drafting)

9. I have a 5 level in Air Force electronics (I worked on weather sensing equipment).

10. Before I was disabled, I worked as a graphic designer for a label manufacturer.

11. Between the Air Force and graphic designer position, I worked in retail, then fast food (Hardees, KFC), then as an insurance agent, and then in a folding carton factory.

12. I am diabetic. Yeah, diabetes is a nasty disease, but thank God it’s manageable and mine is under control.

13. I have agoraphobia due to the vertigo I get from MS.

14. Folks tell me that I have a lot of courage, but I don’t know. I get scared. I feel like I get more scared than most other folks. I just go on and do what I gotta do even though I’m sometimes scared ‘bout outta my mind. I do believe Satan uses fear against you. I also believe that Perfect Love casts out fear! God helps me past all these fears. It reminds me of a line I heard in a John Wayne movie. A little boy said he was frightened and asked if John Wayne was scared. John Wayne said, “Yeah! But don’t let them know it!”

15. I like to cook with my wife.

16. I like to eat out with my family.

17. I like to watch movies with my family.

18. I like to plant trees and flowers with my daughter.

19. I like to grill out on the barby with my boys.

20. I like to watch wild birds at a feeder.
