After taking the SF photos, my "go out and take photos" points got replaced by "stay home and hide from the world" points, so I'm now out of photos to post.

I will probably take more photos during the (US) Thanksgiving week, but beyond that, I'm not sure if I'll get the energy to go out a-picturing anytime in the next few months.
Finally, I'm getting to the photos taken on our honeymoon in California's Gold Country.

For a week, we spent time with one of my husband's friends, his former English Lit teacher from high school. The three of us took small tours of the area around Jackson, Ione, Amador City, and Sutter Creek, took a half day trip to go to Mercer Caverns, and my husband and I took a day trip to Yosemite for my first ever visit there. It was a wonderfully relaxing week, even if it did end with my glasses breaking and me being blind for the last day and a half.
I'm so pissed right now.

I've been going through and updating the submissions in my gallery, after figuring out how to add the EXIF camera information back into my framed images.

So far, out of the hundred or so that I've updated, there have been 12 that worked properly.

The rest took at least 3 upload tries before they worked. Most of the time it's a sequence of upload the new photo, see it doesn't work, re-edit the submission to change the size, then re-edit to change back to the size I want, and it works. But quite a few have taken literally dozens of iterations of that before I get something that will display.

I submitted a help desk report about this yesterday, but of course no response yet.

The stupid interface, plus this, is nearly making me ready to just give up on DA entirely.

*stompstompstomp*

update:

Now one of the submissions I updated won't display at all, no matter what I do. I've been trying for 25 minutes. The file doesn't exist on the back-end file server that DA is trying to use - but exists on ALL 7 OTHER file servers, just not the one DA is displaying

This is so fucking broken.

update 2:

The submission I was having problems with suddenly started working. I don't know if it's because of random chance, or because someone looked at the PLEASE HELP ME help desk request I just submitted and fixed that particular file without correcting the underlying causes of all the problems.

I don't know if I should try any more files or not

update 3:

Okay, things are working *almost* sanely now. Images still don't display when I submit the new file, but if I wait 10 or 15 minutes, they will. I don't think it's reasonable to have to wait that long, but I can deal with it for now.

The San Francisco bay has been used for salt mining since the mid-1800s. Salt evaporation ponds ring the southern end of the bay, and are well known to commuters who travel over the Dumbarton bridge. Most of these evaporation ponds have been purchased by the state of California, and are being slowly restored to salt marshlands.

A co-worker mentioned to me that he thought the salt ponds were fascinating to look at and would make great photos. I agreed with him, so one day I took a stroll around the edges of the evaporation ponds at the western end of the Dumbarton bridge, resulting in these photos.

These are also the last photos I took with my FujiFilm FinePix S3000 camera. Tell your friends, tag people, things like that.

When randomizing, if you come across a song you don't like at all, or for whatever reason don't think would be suitable to draw/photograph something related to, just skip it. This is supposed to be fun, so. ;D Try not to skip TOO many songs though, we still want to keep some kind of randomized feeling.

My list will be kept at the end of my journal, after my features & clubs listings.

This is a beautiful area of weathered sandstone uplifted some 25 million years ago. When you drive Highway 14 between the Antelope Valley and Los Angeles, you get to see a small portion of the park from the freeway; that was enough to get me to finally go see the park itself. It's beautiful terrain, some of it angled and jagged, some wonderfully rounded, and different views around every bend in the trails.

If you're in Southern California and enjoy walks (or horse rides) through picturesque settings, I highly recommend it.

(And the common refrain through all journal entries today - DA's mood system is broken.
I've been taking a lot of mostly random photos over the last couple of weeks, so I'll be uploading them in small batches as I finish processing them. First up is a picture of the San Mateo Bridge, some photos taken near my home around the Centerville Amtrak station in central Fremont, California, and pictures taken at the San Francisco Zoo.

(By the way, there's still several slots open for features here; leave a comment at [link])

Woooot!

I took a ride on the Niles Canyon Railway today.

The NCRy is a tourist railroad that runs about 6 miles down the picturesque Niles Canyon in the San Francisco Bay Area. I caught the 11am train from Niles at 11:20 (locomotive problems were causing delays) and rode it back to Sunol, taking a lot of pictures along the way - mostly of the locomotive and the steam I had lunch in Sunol, then caught the 1:30pm train at 2:00pm back to Niles.

For the trip from Niles to Sunol, the train was pulled by a 1927 ALCO 2-6-2T oil-burning steam engine. Check out the history of Number 3 at the NCRy website for more info about this fun locomotive.

I was in the Open Excursion car right behind the engine, so I got a great view of the sides of the locomotive around turns, and got covered in steam and soot

The ride from one end to the other takes about half an hour, along a portion of the original Transcontinental Railroad route that was rebuilt by volunteers from the Pacific Locomotive Association, which also runs the NCRy and is restoring the Sunol depot.

After lunch, I went back and waited for the 1:30 train. When it showed up at 2pm (due to the earlier delays), I was disappointed to see that the Number 3 had been replaced by a couple of diesels, Southern Pacific numbers 5623 and 1423. Anyway, it gave me a chance to take pictures of other stuff along the track, rather than spending the entire trip watching a steam engine When we passed the NCRy yards at Brightside, I saw the poor lamented No. 3 in the locomotive shed. I hope it gets repaired soon, so I can try to get some pictures of it from off the side of the tracks.

I came back with loads of pictures, which I whittled down to the 29 that I posted here, and a massive sunburn covering my head. (oops). But it was a wonderful day!

Welcome to my journal, and my new photography account.

I'll try to post an update to both at least once a month.

The latest photos I took were from a two hour hike through the Portola Redwoods State Park in the coastal hills south of San Francisco (well south; nearly due west of Palo Alto). Unfortunately, if I remember correctly, it's also one of the state parks that will be closed at the beginning of the California state fiscal year in July. I don't know what, exactly, that will mean, but I hope people will still be able to visit this picturesque redwood forest.
