There's not much going on here right now. I still have a couple photos from my trip to New York State which I've yet to post on here. That should take place within the next few days. Other than this, nill.

I'll be heading to Alabama near the end of October. As for where my journeys will take me while down there, it's yet to be determined. Stay tuned.

I don't remember if I previously mentioned this, but two of my photos were chosen in January by ScratchCat [link] for use in the ecology unit of their Fresh Science educational DVDs for primary and secondary school students. Both pictures were taken at Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia. One was shot in the early morning at Lake Drummond and the other was along Washington Ditch. Here's a intriguing question for you all. Those who are already into aviation need not answer. This is primarily for people of general knowledge. Research is welcome since I can't actually prevent that from happening. Anyway, here is the question below...

You are flying round trip from Dulles International (IAD) to Los Angeles International (LAX), being away for six days in L.A. on business. The plane you're leaving on takes off from Dulles International on Runway 30. On the return trip, your plane lands at the same airport on Runway 12. Did each plane use the same runway or two different runways?

OK...as for fall foliage photos, I didn't have much free time to take any. This past weekend was fairly windy, not to mention wet, so many of the leaves blew off the trees. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a better chance next year.

The Southeastern Conference sure has gotten lively lately, but this kind of crap is totally uncalled for...no matter the rivalry between any team fans. Have a look at the Associated Press news article posted by CBS Sportsline [link].

I'm sure most have already heard about the tragic incident which took place in Saint John's, Arizona last week [link]. This is unrelated to the event above and involves a juvenile suspect. Sad times indeed.

OK, back to something more upbeat. My trip to Alabama went well, although I would like to have stayed longer. Most of my photos from the venture have already been posted. As for autumn foliage pictures, well, it's pretty much peak time here in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. I'll just have to find a decent spot to take shots. Expect something soon. Foxx Trotter will be Bama Bound sometime later this month. It depends on my work schedule as to which week or period I'll be able to take off as well as my medical appointments. Anyways, I plan on doing some more family research down there along with the usual sightseeing. I need to get back by the Horton Mill Covered Bridge near Oneonta [link] and see if there has been any maintenance done since it was closed to traffic in September 2007. The bridge was vandalized by an attempt of people trying to remove one of the roof supports with some sort of tow cable. It was unsuccessful, but significant structural damage still occurred. There were rumors of the covered bridge becoming just a pedestrian walk, but that hasn't been made official yet.

I'll primarily be around Birmingham, but may take a trip down to Montgomery one day that week. I've only been to the state capital once. As many times as I've been to Alabama, I have yet to personally see a NASCAR race at Talladega or go to an Alabama Crimson Tide game in Tuscaloosa. No Auburn fans here, so nyah!

It's always great to wear a Tide cap in Knoxville, eh?

As for right here in the Kakalaks, things are the usual routine. I'm still awaiting fall foliage to peak, which won't take place until late October into early November in the Piedmont region. I may take a trip back to the Grayson Highlands in southwestern Virginia within the next couple weeks, depending on my Bama trip, and get a few photos of the leaves along the Appalachian Trail. Last year, I went to a Great Dismal Swamp where the colors were pretty 'dismal' due to the drought. That is, until I got to Lake Drummond where it's more open. Nonetheless, expect fall colors shortly.

I had to return to New York State this past weekend to pick up my truck, which had some issues while I was up there a few weeks ago. This was my first time flying, but things went pretty well. Of course, there was no direct flight from Raleigh-Durham to Rochester. The easiest route was to change planes at Dulles International in Washington, DC and avoid going to New York City or Newark, New Jersey. My second plane was departing from a different terminal at Dulles, so I had to take a tram from the one I arrived at to the one I was supposed to be leaving from. At least the directions were well detailed and I didn't have any problems finding it. Both flights went without incident and skies were clear all the way up. It's all good.

I spent Saturday up in New York and brought my truck back to North Carolina yesterday. My sister, her boyfriend and I went to the Great New York State Fair and Empire Expo Center in Syracuse [link]. It's one of the largest in the United States as well as the oldest, being in existence since 1841. The midway was fairly average in comparison to other state fairs, but they did have some cool rides. Unfortunately, due to my broken wrist, we didn't go on any. Instead, we primarily ventured through many of the exposition centers on site. Probably the best exhibit was the giant butter sculpture in the Dairy Products Building called "The Cow Jumped Over the Moon" [link] based on the Mother Goose nursery rhyme "Hey Diddle Diddle." There was also a two large sand sculptures at the fair, but both were still under construction. We also saw Joan Jett & the Blackhearts in concert while we were there.

On our way back home, we stopped in Geneva and saw the final preparations being done to a house as part of the popular television series Extreme Makeover: Home Edition [link]. A larger version of the image above is in with the deviations, taken on August 24, 2008. The home is owned by Tim and Michelle Hill. Tim is a former boxer who currently trains children ages 8 to 21 how to box. Many of these children came from low income families or broken homes. All expenses, including boxing equipment and other training needs, were paid by himself. As part of this reconstruction project, a new gym was built behind the house and furnished with state-of-the-art equipment so that Tim can continue with his teachings. Local volunteers also held a fundraiser Saturday to help out the family. The new home and gym were revealed to the Hills earlier this afternoon.

Host and designer Ty Pennington was actually in Alabama on another project the show was working on when we visited the house Saturday night. He returned to Geneva, New York early this morning to help out with the final designs before the afternoon reveal, which occurred at approximately 3:40 PM EDT. A great surprise for a well deserved family. More information on this project can be viewed here [link].

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition begins its sixth season in the United States next month on ABC. This episode is expected to air sometime in October.

OK, back to me. I went back to the doctor earlier this afternoon, and my wrist is still fine. The cast will come off next Friday and I'll have a flexible splint put on so therapy on the joint can be done. Hopefully, things will go well.

Foxx Trotter broke his left wrist while coming down from Algonquin Peak last Sunday in the Adirondacks of New York State. Due to time constraints, I didn't make it to the summit...only about 4,300 feet. I wanted to make it back to the main trail before dark, not to mention it took FOREVER going up. The trails were wet and muddy due to recent rains, although many of the trails are always that way due to mountain brooks and streams following some paths. Anyways, I'll know more about what needs to be done with my wrist when a CT scan is done tomorrow morning in Raleigh. Hopefully, surgery won't be required but that is still a possibility. The last X-rays showed that everything looked good except around the joint where there is a section that is slightly off. Wish for the best I guess...

EDIT: A minor dorsal fracture on the end of the radius near the wrist joint. It shouldn't require surgery though. The doctor will look at it again next week to insure there isn't any movement before placing the wrist in a cast. I have it in a splint right now. Anyways, some good luck. Let's hope for the best.

I'll be leaving for New York State either late Tuesday or on Wednesday. Unfortunately, I won't be up there as long as I'd like to be due to end-of-month stuff for work. I'll have to come back before that time. Anyways, I expect to be doing another hike in the Adirondack High Peaks. My plans are to summit four of the five mountains in the McIntyre Range including Algonquin Peak...the second highest mountain in the state. The trip shouldn't be as lengthy as the trek to Mount Marcy last year. Therefore, I don't expect to spend the night in a lean-to this time. It just depends on the time and weather.

I'm also doing more research up there for my family tree, which means romping the local cemeteries and town offices for information and vital statistics. The interesting part will be trying to find graves of my ancestors in the larger cemeteries. Plenty of time in the "Land of the Dead."

There will be some other happenings while I'm in New York State, including scenic views, so expect plenty of photos soon. Until then, enjoy the weekend!

For those who haven't seen the latest cover of The New Yorker magazine [link], please visit their website and take a gander. I won't go into details on here, so just see for yourself. Although the magazine is well known for its occasional satire covers over many years, this one has met national criticism. "Interesting and controversial" to say the least. It's nothing new to this periodical though. One can say that this is more fuel to the fire in the United States presidential race.

Overall, The New Yorker is primarily a magazine about cultural life in New York City. It can also go way beyond the boundaries into world politics, cartoons, social issues, modern fiction among other things. There is a much variety in each issue. I'd say the magazine has come a long and prosperous way since their first release in 1925. I've read a couple in the past, and they can be quite intriguing.

At least North Carolina is getting its much needed rain now to ease the longtime drought situation. Unfortunately, for some counties, this means occasional flash flooding. Those areas received up to four inches of rain within a couple hours. Afternoon thunderstorms are expected throughout much of North Carolina every day this week. Of course, with that comes the possibility of severe weather including high winds, frequent lightning and hail. The canoes may likely be out in full force by the end of the week. Hopefully, it won't be like the recent situation in the Midwest.

In other weather news, Hurricane Bertha continues to churn across the Atlantic Ocean on its way toward the Caribbean islands. It isn't expected to pose any threat to the United States, although the storm might hit Bermuda this coming weekend. North Carolina already had a Hurricane Bertha back in 1996, causing significant damage. We definitely don't need another one.

Now that all of you have fallen asleep...it's time to bring out...oh, eh, s-sorry.

OK, back to work. Yet another boring week! I knew I should have brought my pillow...

Below are some photos that I took at HeroesCon in Charlotte, North Carolina last Saturday. I took these pictures without a flash, otherwise the images turn up a bit dark. Unfortunately, by doing that, there may be ones that turn up fuzzy. Anyways, I made the photos small so I could fit them within this section.

As for nature pictures, none yet. I will be going back to Upstate New York next month, but I'm not sure what week yet. Another Adirondack hike is in order, so expect some new scenic scapes real soon.

I'm still having problems with the mood selection on this journal. It will now let me go and select a mood, but when I click on it, it leaves my journal edit page goes over to the dA home page. I believe it's time to get a bigger fly swatter. Damn bugs...

It's been awhile since I saw any George Carlin performances on television (or VHS/DVD for that matter), but it was definitely worth every minute when I did. He will surely be missed by many...four-letter words and all.

I did venture to HeroesCon in Charlotte, North Carolina this past weekend. There were quite a few more comic artists at the convention than usual, especially Indie artists. I did pick up a few goodies, primarily in the fantasy category. Unfortunately, I was short on money this time so it wasn't too much. Then again, I was able to find some free comics. Anyways, two hours of being out and about instead of being cooped up.

An interesting item I was noticing earlier. The town of Inuvik in the Northwest Territories of Canada, where the second season of Ice Road Truckers took place, is located at 68 degrees north latitude...well above the Arctic Circle. Today's high temperature up there was 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius). This tied the record high set in 2004. One would think that it would by fairly chilly up there most all year, or at least temperatures ranging in the 50's during the summer. Anyways, temperatures are expected to remain well above normal at both Inuvik and nearby Tuktoyaktuk for the next few days. Of course, the midnight sun would be an intriguing sight for those living on top of the world during that time of year. I'll stick with the Aurora Borealis.

The Dixie Gun & Knife Show is taking place this weekend at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds, so I might check that out. I don't expect too much of anything new though, as the event takes place there four times a year. I'm still waiting on the International Spy Conference, which normally occurs next month in Raleigh. There are always some cool and interesting trinkets there.

Well, at least we got enough rain in the past few weeks to fill most of the area lakes and reservoirs back up. Water restrictions have been eased in most localities, but conservation is still high priority.

I hope to take some spring photos while the flowers are still in bloom. Of course, all that icky yellow tree pollen sh*t is still around...covering anything and everything. Much of that should be gone though in the next couple weeks.

Today marks one year since the Virginia Tech shootings. Never forget...

I currently don't have any new images to post right now, primarily because I haven't had the time to venture out anywhere.

A null set, so to speak. Maybe I can get some area spring blooms in the meantime. Hopefully, I can get back out to Grayson Highlands State Park in southwestern Virginia and hike north on the Appalachian Trail to The Scales. There are some places that way which I have yet to visit. I'd also like to trek to Stone Mountain State Park near Roaring Gap, North Carolina as well as Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart's Birthplace at Laurel Hill in Stuart, Virginia. The new observation deck atop Mount Mitchell is supposed to open later this year, so maybe I can get back out to that as well. Let's hope the haze won't be with it.

Heading down the road to my New York State trip in July, possibly another Adirondack trip to the High Peaks Region...maybe to Mount Colden or Algonquin Peak. It's still a long ways from becoming an Adirondack 46'er, especially since I can only climb one or two peaks up there per year. So far, just Mount Marcy from last year. At least there's no time limit...

Oh yeah, today is my grandfather's birthday. He is now 96 years old and still doing well. OK, it's 3 AM here. It's time to sleep. Later all!

It was a symbolic win for North Carolina in NCAA men's college basketball as they defeated arch rival Duke this evening at Durham in honor of student body president Eve Carson, who was murdered near the UNC campus in Chapel Hill last Wednesday. The Tar Heels win the regular season title this year in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Now, let's see how the conference tournament goes next week. Fierce competition starts here.

Right now, I'm working on about one-hour sleep. Our town had a large wildfire on Sunday, consuming roughly 1,000 acres. The incident lasted about thirteen hours, involving numerous fire departments from four different counties. This wasn't the worst we've seen here though. Back in 1963, the entire town was threatened by a large wildfire which burned about 9,600 acres to the north and west. Many homes were destroyed during that event. High winds and dry conditions were factors in both. The severe drought situation continues here, although there is some rain expected tomorrow night and into Wednesday. A significant amount of snow is currently falling for the first time in central North Carolina this season. About one to three inches are expected around my area and about two to four inches Down East. This accumulation will be more than what we received in a single fall anytime last winter. Here in the Carolinas, the white stuff is few and far between. When we get it though, it can be both a welcomed sight and a total hell. Heh, an inch of snow would practically shut everything down here. At least this event is happening over the weekend and most of it will be melting away by Monday. It will stick around for tomorrow, as temperatures aren't expected to go above freezing. Anyways, I might try to take some snowy photos later on. That depends, of course, on how much snow we actually get.

Well...I had to wait a bit for one of the recipients to take notice

, but I passed on a couple holiday gifts at Christmas to two of my longtime friends who are currently members on deviantART. No, I don't mean "longtime" as back in the day during childhood (they got other stuff

), but people I've known for awhile and have been great to talk to while passing time online. It's always fun to know new faces and share new things, ideas and events. Each received one-year subscriptions on dA in thanks for their special friendships over these past few years. For one, it's her first subscription on this site. I'm sure she'll eventually figure out all the neat features that come with this membership. Then again, I myself still need to check out the journal enhancements.

Oh yeah, I'm currently working on Family Tree stuff. One can say it's a blast to the past. Even though it can be intriguing, it can also be a pain in the @$$ in making sure you find the "correct" ancestors. I hate automation sometimes.

Below are a number of images taken from our town's Christmas Parade on Thursday night. Unfortunately, the video was shot in low quality so smaller is the best view. I should have more decent pictures placed on the Chamber website within the next couple weeks. We are the only town in the Raleigh-Durham area (that I know of) which has its holiday parade at night. It makes for a more impressive event.

The drought here continues and more drastic measures are being taken in the larger municipalities in reference to water restrictions. As of right now, there is no significant rain in sight.

I'm gonna try and get out to Stone Mountain State Park near Elkin, North Carolina within the next few weeks. Yet another wonderful feature of the Blue Ridge Range. Who knows? Maybe I'll get some photos of some decorative Christmas lights as well. There is a place down towards Fayetteville which has a yardful of elaborate setups bringing numerous visits. I'm still not good at night pictures, but I'll see what I can do.

I had to delay my trip to Alabama a week due to some things at work which still had to be done. Anyways, I'll have more photos soon. As for the drought situation here in North Carolina, it continues to get worse. There is a chance for rain later this week, but it won't even come close the putting a dent in the defecit. I don't have any new images to add right now. Peaktime for fall foliage in the Piedmont region of North Carolina isn't until late October into early November, so there is still a wait here. Unfortunately, due to severe drought conditions throughout the state, the colors aren't expected to be as inspiring as they were last year. Not much of any rain is forecast anytime soon. Most cities and towns are under strict mandatory water restrictions and many area reservoirs are well below normal levels. We're quite parched with no relief in sight.

I'll be bound for Alabama on Saturday to spend a week with my relatives down there. Plenty of photos forthcoming from the Cotton State, as well as another trip to Great Dismal Swamp in Virginia to hopefully get fall foliage photos from there in late October or early November. Only one ditch trail will be open though due to the deer hunting season. At least I'll be able to track to Lake Drummond. Now, if I can only get some decent bird pictures...

Fire Prevention Week begins today and runs through Saturday (at least in the United States). Remember fire safety and have an escape plan in place if there is ever a fire in your home or business. Don't forget to test and change the batteries in your smoke detectors (preferably twice a year during the Daylight Savings Time changes) as well as having your chimney flues and furnaces checked before the heating season gets fully underway. Stay safe all.

My mother and I saw Genesis [link] in concert Sunday at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. Overall, the event was magnificent. Unfortunately, there was almost an hour delay in starting due to power fluxuation issues and we had to leave the concert early because the public parking deck we were parked in closed at 11 PM. It's kinda odd seeing them, as old as they are, still playing....Phil Collins with no hair.

We first saw Mike Rutherford way back in the 1980s with Mike & The Mechanics during their first album tour. Not much has changed with him other than age. Tony Banks has all gray hair now and a more sophisticated look. Over 30 years of memorable music, even beforehand with Peter Gabriel at lead.

Even though the core of Genesis in its later years were Banks, Collins and Rutherford, the other two players of the band cannot be left out. Chester Thompson and Daryl Stuermer have been a part of the works as well for the past three decades. It's not often when two drum sets are played simultaneously as with both Collins and Thompson. A difficult task requiring lots of practice and skill, not to mention keeping rhythm and beats exact. It's just A Trick of the Tail, mmm-hmm.

At least we found out why the tickets were so expensive. They have more lights on stage than all of New York City. It made for a great show though and well worth it. This show was the closest Genesis was going to be to Raleigh-Durham on their North American tour. The eight-hour round trip drive was no problem, although we didn't get home until almost 3 AM. There was some interesting sights on the way back, including passing a number of racing haulers on the way back from Dover, Delaware where the NASCAR Nextel Cup race was held earlier that day. I wouldn't have minded running one of those Rick Hendrick ones off the road, especially that worthless #24 one.

It's gonna be strange seeing Dale Earnhardt, Jr. with Hendrick Motorsports next year though. Oh well, that's life.

One final thing...HOCKEY!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

My family and I saw Emo Philips [link] at Goodnights Comedy Club in Raleigh Saturday night. It was actually my first time going to a comedy show, though I've seen plenty on TV. Anyways, one class act definitely worth seeing. Emo has been doing stand-up comedy for over 30 years, and is still one of the best. He has been on a number of programs in the past including Saturday Night Live, "The Late Show" with David Letterman and the Weird Al Show as well as radio shows such as Bob & Tom and Howard Stern. His whiny voice isn't hard to miss, not to mention his odd look and funny antics. Don't let any of that fool you. Emo Philips is top notch comedy. There is only one true Emo. See him live. I did have a chance to personally see and speak to Emo after the show, but the others were ready to leave. Early morning tasks. Well, maybe a future show.

Speaking of Weird Al Yankovic, he was in Raleigh a couple months ago...and I missed him. There's always another time.

I'm sure I'll see more great comedy shows down the road. Toodleloo.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is actually not until October, but this doesn't mean we can't jumpstart things.

I went and saw BODIES: The Exhibition [link] earlier today, which has been at The Streets at Southpoint in Durham since April. This is the last weekend here before the exhibition heads off to Pittsburgh. For those around the world who have a chance to see it, please do. It's well worth it. Real human bodies including organs, vessels, skin, muscles, bones, and yes, even the genitals.

Each specific body part of the select exhibit is labeled for people to see these items in their appropriate places. All human anatomy systems are covered...skeletal, muscular, nervous, circulatory, digestive, respiratory, reproductive, urinary, integument and even fetal development. Sorry, no pictures since photography wasn't allowed. Please visit their website (linked above) for photos and more information.

Some exhibits even showed how various diseases affect the human body such as cancer, emphysema, cirrhosis, heart disease, tuberculosis, various defects and others. A couple specimens included how smoking affects the lungs, becoming gray with black spots. Normal lungs are pinkish in color. Hence, a large bin was there for people to toss their cigarettes after viewing these examples.

I'm aware it proves a serious point, but just the bin being there is kinda funny.

There are cutaways of both the male and female bodies, showing detailed views of the interiors. I'm aware that some people may be grossed out by looking at stuff like this. As for myself, being in the fire service for a number of years and occasional working with EMS personnel on serious incidents, it doesn't bother me at all as I'm more than used to it. BODIES: The Exhibition is a wonderful educational tool for both children and adults into learning more about themselves and how the body functions as well as what to look for and what to avoid in order to stay healthy and live a long life. As I previously mentioned, for those around the world who have a chance to see it, please do. There are a few similar exhibits, but this one is elite. GO SEE IT!!
