I won the PEOPLE'S CHOICE award for the literary entries! This is completely on the fact that I have the best friends in the world and you all freaking crushed the vote. I was told it was a landslide, and I only have you to thank. ty all so much.

THIS JUST IN!!! I went to the awards ceremony at Union Station for the individual art categories. There was delicious food and a wonderful crowd(my guess is over 200). My daughters, Mallory and Julia, went with me and we enjoyed all of the visual art on display and ate like the food was free They announced the visual art categories first and my daughters and I waited quite impatiently for the literary ones. When they got to the Free Verse category (my entry was "A Gift for You", the piece so many of you have helped me vote for this week!)
they called my name and I went up to get my award-Best in Show for the Free Verse Category (picture a ribbon you would hang on a race horse ) . When I turned to look at the crowd, my wife was there in the front. She was supposed to be working until 8 but got off work and showed up for the award. It was a great day today.

Great News!

Well, I have some great news for me. I entered the Creativity in the Cube contest at my employer DST Systems. I entered pieces in 2 categories (Free Verse and Haiku) and then they had a company wide vote.

My friend Mark and I had this crazy idea about a year and a half ago, kind of a "what-if" lunch. And a great idea happened. But the incredible part is that Mark has taken it and run with it. Last year's fledgling event had great turn out, poetry and wine. Providing leadership and stick-to-it-iveness to get this bird of paradise in flight for season 2. For those who can make it to central Missouri in the first part of May, it will be a grand time. I will be pointing the way to local sightseeing/beer drinking/revelry for those that need a native guide to KC for those arriving early, and Mark is doing all the heavy lifting with the show! Thank you Mark for all your efforts and time. What an incredible moment to experience. You will want to be here for it.

On Tuesday morning of this week, my Grandmother died. I miss her a great deal and I have made the trip home to SC to be here for the visitation and the funeral.

I can not possibly represent how many lives she has changed nor capture her wicked quick wit and brilliance for you to witness. So I will simply state I loved her deeply and will miss her and the light she brought to my life.

If I don't who will?

This morning while walking Jypsy we walked past the Nativity Catholic school near the house. They have the parents in a large queue (circling through the large parking area) to drop off their little ones at the doors. I notice two different types of parents. The first drove cars similar to mine(several years old closing in on 100k miles) and the other group drove cars and SUV's that cost well over $50,000. The thought that came to me is the two different views I suspect they have. The first group is paying the tuition, because the want something more for their children. The second because the can't imagine doing any less for them.

It has rattled around in my head all day and I couldn't seem to assign any meaning to it, but I wanted to share it with you all.

ALSO I have a friend who is new to DA but not to me. He is one of the best friends you could ever have and one of the best story tellers I know. Much to you all....

Today I wanted to write a bit to say thank you to you all. "Thank You". Now that the tough part is out of the way, I wanted to make an update to my journal too!

The poetry reading was wonderful and there is more information and photo's over at Mark's page if you are even a bit interested. WONDERFUL poetry readings and great wine counteracted the oppressive heat, so all in all it was a success.

Special thanks goes out to my editor , my family, my friends, and my Muse who I love.

July 20th Poetry Event Taking Shape

Itenerary Set for July 20 Poetry Festival

After a couple of month's search, we have come up with a varied and interesting list of presenters for the July 20th Poetry Festival to be held in Western Missouri (USA).

Here is the schedule of presenters. Times listed are times are Central Savings Time --

update....tough days

Much to you all....

I am not sure how else to say it. My home was burglarized yesterday morning while we slept upstairs. Many items were stolen and the sense of safety in our home was destroyed, but no one was injured and the items that were stolen could be replaced. I am terribly saddened by the events and the subsequent nonsense involving the insurance company and police. Please know that I will be busy elsewhere for a while trying to get this all sorted out. I hope all is well with you and your families.

To add to the ordeal, on my way home from getting a new Blood Sugar test unit I was RUN INTO by a 225 lb deer. Not a good day to deal with insurance 4 claims in one day(house, broke into our cars(both) and the deer attack)....

So I have recently returned from Sacramento/El Dorado Hills, California. Here are the highlights. First, the company sent me to CA for training on a new software-and the training went great. I went to Big Tree State park which inspired me [link] and [link] and the drive was excellent [link] That evening I ate one of the best meals of my life. Bistro 33 deserves the props for the excellent meal and delicious dessert.

So this weekend Jypsy and I went to the Dog Park for the first time. She has decided that if her career as a pheasant hunter she could try her paws at the agility course. She was hell in the tunnel and had the ramps and jumps down cold. So my dog is more sure of her career choice than I am....btw here she is

Buble Concert update

I have been featured by a new friend. She is a wonderful and prolific critic and poet. She had a grand sense of humor and had been a blessing to me. Thank you .
So here is basic CSS lovin' added to it. I am not sure if I have the hang of it all, but I am trying. That is a start I guess.

So for my lovely bride's February birthday I got her tickets to go see Michael Buble last night. To suggest that my wife thinks that Michael Buble is a fine singer and a gorgeous man would be a slight understatement(like saying I like my IPod or M:tg) Neither Tracee nor I have been to the new Sprint Center, and so we gave our self some time to get there early and not get lost(been known to happen). As a note the parking adjacent to the Sprint Center is $20 a pop. That is mighty high but it was in the teens and close was important. Once we got inside we got dinner( the fare was above average with a wide array of choices) and went to our seats. The arena is wonderful inside and comfortable. Drink holders and nice seats.

We chatted with the people around us and did a little audience watching. The opening act was Naturally 7. They are a fantastic acapella group that specializes in voice play(making instrument sounds and the like vocally). Their album is excellent I have listened to it twice since last night. The basss singer is REEEEdiculous. He is about 6'2" and 165 lbs and his voice drops off the edge of the earth. They had fun with the audience and put on exceptional displays of vocal range and sound/effects.

So there was a 15-20 minute break between Naturally 7 and Buble so on my way to the restroom I saw the members of Naturally 7 sitting down to give autographs on their cd's or dvd's. I hopped in line and in about 5 minutes I met them all (Jamal has crazy guns...i mean damn...more on him later) and got back just in time for the show to start.

Buble came out and started with "I'm Your Man" a sizzling number that had the female crowd out of there damn mind, after the song he mentioned a super drunk woman who had been flashing more than her smile at Jamal and his muscles while Naturally 7 was on stage. Buble wanted to know where she was and acted mighty bummed that she was not there anymore silly security. He is a dynamic entertainer and brought it all night long.

His encore numbers were excellent.

He is definitely worth it to go see in concert, and I was not a huge Buble fan to start.

However he is candid and his sense of humor is savage.

His best joke of the night came when he was talking with 3 14-year olds in the audience. He told them that people your age in the audience "keep me from turning into Amy Winehouse sooo fast" We laughed til we cried.
So my wife and I came home and put Buble on the stereo and danced in the living room while Jypsy hopped around trying to get our attention. What a grand event.

SO as promised I took a grand nap today and hope to post a quick poem that I cobbled together in my pre-sleep nap time. Thank you for reading this hhuggggeeeeee journal.

So this weekend has been excellent. My oldest daughter(julia) tried out for and was chosen to be a member of a 28-school honors choir. They met all day Saturday and performed to a packed house of over a thousand people. Of course she was marvelous.

While she was there, my youngest (mallory) and I went for a hike at the state park. I have spent many hours in this state park when I was young and to have this time with her was priceless. We walked along the banks of the creek/river and worked on her rock skipping skills(still need work ) The highlights were finding the following:
A cow skull
Pertrified wood
Wild Turkey tracks
Raccoon tracks
a stone with a hole in it and we made a necklace for her.
And the fabled Beaver Dagger
The Beaver Dagger was a small(10 inch) log that a beaver had chewed to a point on one end and had fashioned a fabulous handle at the other. I believe it was used to defend us from a bevy of rabid chipmunks. Many a chipmunk was slain that day.

After our delightful hike, we went and had lunch with one of my favorite authors . Lunch was only surpassed by the company. Great things are in the works and I will keep you posted. He is as wonderful and kind a man as you would suspect if you have ever dealt with him here on DA. BTW THANK YOU FOR THE CD'S they are now on the Ipod (6513 songs and six movies right now...but we are not done loading music yet)

So when MJ and I left we went to the Community Center and went swimming. FYI I love to swim. If I ever really get serious about getting in shape and saving me life, it will involve swimming. It is one of the places I feel safe and able and at ease, at home. I swam competitively for 14 years and Saturday I got a bit of a craving to start again. Our company competes in Corporate Challenge. I could certainly train for that as a motivator I guess .

We then went and watch J. sing her heart out and it was the capstone of a great memory.

I did see several other items of note on the trip. I saw a tree in a park in WBG that I ate lunch near when I was but a youth. I saw my high school and the last location where anyone remembers me wearing spandex shorts in public. I also will need your help deciding on a haiku to enter in my company's contest. I have six or so writtne so far and will post em soon. Thank you

1) As a child/youth/young adult I never owned a gaming system(Atari---yes I am THAT old, Nintendo, play station, nothing), although I do enjoy gaming quite a bit.

Building 429 and WIP update

I listen to what I consider to be an incredibly broad width of music, and this update is for those who like a fairly main stream sound, from a band with pretty good musical chops. I just got back from the Building 429 concert here in KC. The band did not have their full sound set up or full lights, so the concert felt much more natural and did not feel or sound overproduced. The concert was free and over 1500 people attended at a LARGE local church(man, that place was huge). The band stayed after the show until they had spoken with EVERY fan/concert attendee that wanted to meet them or get an autograph/picture and were genuine. Musically the bassist laid down a wicked solo and also played BANJO on a cover of Man of Constant Sorrow from "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou", which was a riot. They were not too serious and the concert was loud, powerful, and one of the best events so far in 2008.

I am currently tacking against the wind poetically. Shifting from one form to another and my mood has shifted again as well. When one of these stabilizes at least 2 or 3 of these will finish right up.

My sister , freshfromhisclay, and her husband are here in Kansas City visiting my family. We went to the Nelson-Atkins Museum on Saturday and it was incredible. I got to view works by the masters - Van Gogh, Manet, Monet, Rodin. What an inspiring day...thankfully my sister brought at least 4 days of warm weather here to KC and it has been lovely. Any respite from winter makes me happy.

***this just in**** hooked me up with a avatar that I so this is a thank you to a friend who saw my need(sad...over a year here and no avatar because I am as technical as a shoelace) here I am for those of you who have not seen it yet. so yeah it has been an excellent weekend. ****update completed****

I felt a hankering to post a new journal to update those of you who care (and torment those of you who don't!). Satah started it with her projects listz that are all the rage I hear if the Cap'n is to be believed.
I am not nearly as far thinking as Satah but here are a few that may make the grade and are in the hopper. I have a couple more on the fringes of my mind that I need to track down.

My much unheralded return

So I have successfully returned from the winter wilds of central Kansas. Our trip was fantastic, with no injuries, great stories to tell and a freezer full of pheasant. I also wrote about five or six new pieces as the remote location and the time off made me somewhat talkative-and for those of you who know me that means I was REALLY talkative

So I hope you enjoy the new pieces and while my trip was a joy, I did wish to take you all with me. I missed you guys.

Oh I will be posting a picture of the biggest gift from the trip, I received a 6 month old female German Shorthair Pointer she was found colarless and quite hungry on a balmy 20 degree day with 25 mph winds. We drove by and then had to turn around to make sure she was okay. So this little girl in my life is named Gypsy, and she has already enchanted me with her ways.

So I was waiting for the girls to get through their Christmas practice, but I wanted to listen to them sing without interrupting. So I fetched a brown metal folding chair from the classroom next door and this little gem was born.

Yes a moment of genius for me. I felt that to even grant it scrap status might be too much. I rated it a 4.5, but another critic(kind and generous) gave it a 6 on a scale of 1-10. I figured I better put that in there before some wise acre asked if that was a 1-1000 scale. I know how some of you are!

I am having one of those magical days today. My girls are beautiful and we are having fun- dancing around the living room and 'cleaning' the house in the process. Another wonderful moment in my life captured forever in my memories. Another bit of grand news as well has lifted my spirits!

I am not going anywhere, or leaving DA I suspect I will be here for at least 19 years and 9 1/2 months God willng and if the creek don't rise. Like any good element I reach my half-life tomorrow. The day is hanging a bit heavy, but there may be a good birthday in the works for me. I had and excellent weekend and great times with friends. So I have taken leave to regain my senses(only a couple of days, but every day helps). I've been working about the house and I sat down and played guitar again today for the first time in a while. It was good(alas i am not!) But I found again that I play for these reasons:
1: The manual dexterity and coordination helps to prevent me for thinking too damn much.
2: The sound of the song and my voice make the moment both real and actual.
3: time suspends for the session. I do not look at a clock and the only clue I'd have is if it got dark outside.

I think I am truly writing this journal to me. Well in honor of me I just want to say what grand two days I've had muckin' about with me. If the rain would stop for a bit it would top it all off, but I think it is too much to ask!

I am having a tough time sleeping tonight so I thought I add a little journal entry to clear the mind so I can crash.
I wanted you all to know that DA has been good for my soul. I took some time off from writing. I busied myself with working too much, and not appreciating all of the myriad miracles around me each day. I guess that when I realized today that 2/3 of the year I was frightened at how quickly it disappeared. Thank you all for stopping in to see "me".

If there is anything you would like me to write about(not my Obituary thanks!) or if you would like some constructive crit on a deviation, please let me know(send me a note, or write me a letter of papyrus in calligraphy if you like).
