All who participate become “coins of different provinces; and now…are melted down, and all bear the same stamp. To discover the old distinctions, the metal itself must be tested.” Through the ordeal of working hard to be a unit, we have become “closer than lovers” and we were and still are a family, no matter how far the distance. I was also reminded of the last performance the band put on. Our director told as that we were a family united by the hard work that made us a band.
When reading All Quiet on the Western Front, many questions come to mind. One of the more enduring questions is “What is no-man’s land?” From the book, one can tell that it is a place that is too dangerous to go into because it is too easy to get shot there, but why else? They could have dug trenches in that area, but that would have meant that the men had less time to react to a charge. Maybe men got shot down as they tried to dig in that area as well. Then, one would also wonder how the men can tell when it’s safe to take off their masks after a gas attack. In the book, Paul knew when it was ok to take off his mask when another man took off his, but yet, some of the rookies took off their masks when the others in the dug-out did, and they all died, so how could they really tell?
For the men at war, “War is the cause of death like cancer and tuberculosis, like influenza and dysentery.” Everyday for them was a challenge to survive to the next day. War to be a natural cause of death for men fighting through the war; it was just a faster way to die instead of slowly rotting away in a bed. For the new recruit, however, it was much harder thing to be in the war. After a single day at the front, the rookie survivors had “awful expressionlessness (faces) of dead children.” Though not many made it through, because the recruits were so inexperienced that they didn’t know to put on gas masks in an attack, or to even duck when under fire.
What makes All Quiet on the Western Front such a great war novel is the fact that it is neutral in its viewpoint, and it portrays both the enemy and his allies as completely human, and he is honest with his portrayal of his leaders as well. Many of the war stories that have survived today portray their enemy as evil, less than human, and the leaders of their own side as these great heroes who stand for justice and all things great, and that makes the contrast between the two types of war novels even bigger.

Accusative grammar form in German is a lot different from what an American student is used to, but once figured out, it can be pretty easy. The nominative is the main noun of the sentence. Then, there is the verb, the action that the noun does, and finally, the Accusative, who or what the action effects.


To demonstrate, here is an example:

Katy hat den Rechner. Katy, in the sentence is the nominative, hat is the verb, and Rechner is the Accusative, with the Accusative form of the masculine ‘the’, den.

The rulers after the revolution of France did help make it the country it is today, but most of those rulers gave the people little freedoms. In some of the circumstances, even the rule established by kings was at one point reinstated.
The first ruler of France after the revolution was the emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte. His rule started in 1804, and continued until 1814, and then in 1815 he once again ruled, but only for that year. His reign was marked by his military genius, and his quick rise because of his strategies. Then, there was Louis XVIII, who did not have the leadership that the country of France needed. This ruler was an emperor for 1814 to 1815, in between the times Napoleon ruled, and from 1815 to 1824 he also ruled France. He was known to be a man who believed anything he was told, so he was not the king who could change much in his kingdom. After the poor leadership of Louis, there was Charles X, starting in 1824. This king tried to destroy the freedom that the press had, and dissolve the chamber of deputies, but he did not succeed. He later abducted in 1830, in favor of Louis Philippe, and fled the country. Louis Philippe ruled from 1830 to 1848. He was unable to properly rule France because he did not gain allegiance from the industrial classes. Then there was the presidential reign of Louis Eugene Cavaignac, in the second republic. He was one of the main people leading the revolution of 1848, and he also became a president for that year, but only that year. After Cavaignac, there was another Napoleon ruling the country, but only as a president. He was Louis Napoleon III, the first Napoleon’s nephew. Soon, though, he followed in his namesake’s foot steps, and in 1852 he became the emperor of the second empire, and remained an emperor until 1870. Napoleon III was the last of those who reigned over France.

The poem, Vom Alten Fritz, is about making fun of the King of Prussia. Heinz Erhardt is saying that the king was a great man, yet he lacked in some things. Erhardt said that basically, the king is the fries, and his followers, the toppings that added to the fries.

Heinz Erhardt was a musician who wanted to professionally play the piano. Unfortunately for him, though, he never did get a chance to play in a position that advanced. He did, however get to play the piano in the Marine orchestra. Erhardt was a poet, but he was also an actor, a comedian, a director, and an entertainer, until a stroke in 1971 took away his speaking and writing abilities. Erhardt was considered a German, even though he was born in Latvia, and he lived in Germany for the majority of his life.

He started out as a democracy ruler from the Nazi party, because the people of Germany voted him into office, but he later showed his true colors and became a fascist leader with a lot of power over his country. He managed his way into rule by promising to rectify the high unemployment rates, inflation, and therefore ending the starvation that many people had to face because the end of the war took many of the jobs that were normally available. Hitler, because of his power, gave more control of East Germany to the Nazis.
The leader of Italy, a fascist dictator who quickly gained power, was Benito Mussolini. He rose to power when his group called ‘blackshirts’ took Rome in 1922. He was able to take over Italy because of the defeat his country suffered at Caporetto October, 1919. This defeat had weakened the government to the point that gave Mussolini his chance to take over Italy. Mussolini was the editor of Avanti! for two years and soon had his own paper called Popolo d'Italia. With his experience and influence in writing, Mussolini roused the people of his country with a cry for a dictator to come take over the weak government. It turned out that he himself was the man for the job, so he conquered the Italian government. In the end, the king let him have the position of prime minister through a deal to prevent more bloodshed.
The leader of Japan, the longest reigning emperor of Japan, was Michinomiya Hirohito. His rise to power was inherited by his bloodline, as his father was also the emperor before Hirohito. Hirohito was a militaristic ruler, but he also was a quiet man. The conditions of his country, Japan, after world war one, was fairly stable for a country after a war. The government was stable, the people were as a country should, together, and the only problem was that the economy was not doing very well, but it could recover. Japan managed to leave the war fairly intact. During his rule, Hirohito signed into a government much like the kind that Britain currently follows, with a cabinet ruling the country, and the ruler as merely a figurehead.
Another ruler, of Spain, is Francisco Franco.

The next ruler of the Soviet Union, now known as Russia, was a man who was known, like Hitler, for his deeds, Joseph Stalin. He was originally a socialist, but he soon turned to the way of the communist. He started out by joining the Bolshevik with Lenin, and after Lenin died he, with a council, ruled the Soviet Union. Stalin then either had his partners of the council killed, or pushed out of their position of power. To make his rule stable, he destroyed all the people who refused to comply with his rules, destroyed their crops, and started the industrial revolution in the Soviet Union with factories that barely paid enough for the people of his country to live. The people, as a result, were starving and most were barely alive because of both the hard work and lack of food. Stalin enforced the communist way to get the Soviet Union caught up with the countries it was 50 years behind.
The final leader, of the United States, started out as Calvin Coolidge, and soon switched to Warren Harding. They both followed the democracy form of government that the United States still follows today. Harding gained control of the United States because the others running for the office were deadlocked. Coolidge gained control of the United States by first starting as the governor of Massachusetts for two terms, and later ran for president, but was selected as vice president. Coolidge was given the office after the death of the president, Harding. During his running for office, he enforced his reputation, and gained the people’s good opinion. The conditions of their country were not so good. There was a war debt that had to be paid off, and on top of that, there were problems with weapons control. They were both because of the last war, World War one, and the expanding independence that the people were demanding. Coolidge did not introduce a new political system because he did not have that kind of power in the first place, and the other branches of his government held him in check.

In the book, A Tale of Two Cities, the main characters were dealing with life in France right before the rebellion of the poor. Darnay asked Lucie's father to marry his daughter, lucie, and Carton asked Lucie herself if he might marry her. Of course, Darnay was the one who ended up marrying Lucie, fathering two children, (one of which who died) and settled down in France. Unfortunately for Darney, he was noticed by Mrs. Defarge, so she was forced to knit his name into her cloth. Darnay soon felt the need to go back to France to help a friend, so he left to go, unknowingly that his life was in danger because he had an aristocratic life. Sometime later, the Defarges were readying for war. Mr. Defarge was informed of a spy in the area, so he told Mrs. Defarge of him, and she began knitting his name into the cloth that told of all those who would die in the revolution because of their rank

Even during this time, there were work and ideals found by great artists and scientists that still remained in the minds of men. To the church, the notions of even these ideas were dangerous. The people of Europe, and other countries influenced by those who lived in Europe, were slowly learning of the "dangerous ideas"; the church worried that they would start thinking on their own, discover the church's corruption of its leaders, and start attacking the principles and teachings of the church. So, any attack on the church, whether it was because of just incorrect information published by the church was proven, or the assassination of an official was dealt with harshly. To the church, it was against the holy will of God for men to even question what the leaders of the church had set as truth and fact. The church, then, made an attempt to quell any opposition stopped many people from even trying to attack the church, but there were still a few who dared. One man was included with those who still dared to question the accepted facts; he was curious of why these facts were accepted, and willing to go against the church to find out the truth. This curiosity inspired him so much; he dedicated his life to researching and experimenting on the effects of gravity and even general science. He did not have an easy job, for he did not have fancy equipment, help from previous scientists, but yet he succeeded in discovering more information about science than anyone else in that time. Even the Catholic Church's attempts to silence him were not accomplished, as so this paper exists, but he still persevered in discovering new facts and spreading the word of his ideas.

Today, we enjoy the technology of our century. Science has improved our lives greatly from the times of the Renaissance to the times of today, and this advancement raised our quality of life by many times over. Our thanks for these advances are due to our founding fathers of science. They were the ones who worked hard so we might be able to enjoy a better life. Without them, we would be without all of our conveniences and advancements in learning, and we would still be in an age of darkness, completely ignorant of what we had the potential to be. We would not even be exploring the stars that many of these great men and women studied during their lifetimes, and wondered at how they could exist! One founding father in particular, was the first man recognized as a founding father, Sir Isaac Newton. His work helped us, today, to be able to have the mathematics necessary to accomplish our many advances in the sciences, such as building and flying the rocket, airplanes, and even modern medicine. In fact, he helped our mathematics today so much, that we would not have even been able to have so many chances to improve ourselves, to find out more of the possibilities of our computers, of our food supplies, or even our own bodies.

Newton's life
Sir Isaac Newton was born in Woolsthorp, near Lincolnshire, England on December 25, in 1642. He was known as a small baby, and he was not expected to live, but he managed to disprove the ones who thought they knew about what was, even this first time. Newton began school at small country schools near his home. When he was ten years old, he attended a small grammar school in Grantham, England, and stayed with a local pharmacist. While at this school, Newton did not show much talent in his work,

and did not do very well. Not long after attending this school, when his second father died (his first father died before he was born, and his mother remarried), his mother decided that he was better off learning to manage the family estate, instead of just sitting in school. To her dismay, he did not cooperate well in this position. Often, instead of helping manage the estate or listening to the workers, he would go off and read somewhere under a tree. After the fiasco with the estate, Newton's uncle, William Ayscough, sent him back to the small grammar school, and this time, he stayed with the school master, and the school master saw his possible talent, so he spent plenty of time teaching Newton, and his knowledge grew in the mathematics.
