I have been heartbroken from long distance relationships quite a few times. I think long distance relationships can and do work, but not for everyone. If you are one of the people with trust issues who is always afraid of your partner cheating, you will probably have a hard time making a normal relationship working let alone a long distance one. Long distance relationships take extra patience, trust, honesty, dedication, and if you want to see your partner anytime soon: a fair bit of cash flow. Also, if the relationship comes from two people who have met on the internet, I would say it is important for both people to know that knowing someone in person is much different from only talking on the phone/im/e-mail/webcam. So much of human communication is body language and those in a long distance relationships normally don't get to witness that often (short visit or webcam) if they see each other at all. Plus, not to be a pessimist but, not being able to be around your partner whenever you want makes it a lot easier for both of you to hide the flaws that you don't want the other to see. (no one is 100% open) As much as I would love to think that meeting someone you have known awhile on the internet won't change much in the relationship, the fact is it could change everything. It's almost like meeting a stranger, a stranger of whom you know lots of personal information. Does this mean that I am against meeting people on the internet? Not at all.

In fact, this Sunday a friend/boyfriend of mine who I have been talking to for 5 years is coming to visit me all the way from California for 10 days. (I live in Wisconsin.) Personally, I am surprised that I am not a nervous mess right now. There is still a part of me that wonders, “What if he doesn’t like me?” But for the most part, I am excited. We have a few plans already made (going to the Milwaukee Art Museum, a picnic in the park, fireworks for the 4th by the lake, cooking lunch together and watching a movie, (Across the Universe or RENT ) and a tour of the city by public bus) but otherwise we are just going to wing it. He is bringing his camera and said he will let me borrow it so hopefully I will get some good shots.

June 16, 2006, a day I will never forget. It seems like only yesterday we were all together, celebrating our high school graduation. Kevin, Nathan, Katie, Kari, Jordan, Laney, Andrew, Carmen, and me. A group of kids who spent their senior year together. We have shared triumphs and failures, pain and loss. Two years later, we are reunited for a different reason. One of us is gone, but will be remembered in our hearts forever. I write this story, our story, for him.

“I’m late for chemistry, Dannon,” I sighed half heartedly. I only called him by his real name when I wanted to annoy him.
He smiled. “I know. I’m late for calculus with Malkovich.” His face scrunched up in a look of disgust. “I just wanted to make sure we are still on for sixth hour.”
I grinned. “Of course.”
“And when you boys get done talking, if you could join us in class, Mr. Hathaway?” Ms. Lennox was standing in the doorway, her face stern.
“Yes, ma’am. See ya sixth hour, Danny.”
Chemistry was not my brains top priority apparently, not that it usually is. While everyone else was discussing stoichiometry, (whatever the hell that is) my mind was on one thing. Danny. To the rest of the world, including him, we were best friends. Inseparable. Almost like brothers. But if we were brothers, my feelings for him would be that much worse. You see, I was sorta in love with my best friend. Hell, he had a girlfriend. That should be a huge tip off to stay away. It was pathetic that I was desperate and needy for a guy who didn’t even know I liked him, let alone like me back.
It was only third period and I was already dying for it to be 1:00, just so I could see him again. Sixth hour used to be a sacred time for us. We would just sit in the practice rooms and talk. Well, maybe we would get a little singing in. No topic was off limits. You name it, we talked about it. Although, ever since Danny started dating Meghan, the only thing Danny wanted to talk about was girls. He told me about the hot chick that sits across from him in world civics, the sexy life guard at the pool where he trains, how he watches the girls in gym stretch. I pretended to be interested but in my head all I can see is me watching him stretch. Due to Danny’s swimming and my studies, we were unable to meet for lunch for a month and a half. Now that swimming season was over and we were starting a new term, we finally had room in our schedules.
The rest of the day seemed to move slower than a slug. I had become a perpetual clock watcher. I was as bad as a speed addict. Danny was my drug and I was high, waiting for my next fix. The bell to end fifth period sounded and I was out of my desk so was I almost knocked it over. Oh, yeah. I had it bad.
When I got to the practice rooms, Danny was already waiting.
“Miss me?” He hugged me as I put my books on the piano next to his.
“Nah,” I said with a smile. “Why would I miss a loser like you?”
Danny punched me playfully in the stomach. “A loser like me, huh? More like a loser like you.”
“Oh really?” I shoved him into the piano and our books fell on the floor.
He laughed. “You are so dead.”
He wrestled me to the ground so fast I barely knew what happened. Danny tried to hold my hands down but before he could get a good grip, I pushed him off with me feet. No sooner had I started to sit up when he was right back on me, this time getting a good grab on my arms. Just when he thought it was done, I used my legs and flipped us over so I was on top, taking hold of his wrists.
“ Pin!” I smirked like a cat that had just got its mouse. My breath was coming out in short, harsh gaps.
“Fine, you win,” Danny smiled. He was breathing hard too.
And when he started to get up off the floor, I did the stupidest thing I have ever done. Even now I look back and cringe as I remember this moment, the moment that ruined everything.
I kissed him.
And for a millisecond it was bliss. But then his whole body tensed. He pushed me off and I fell hard into the piano.
“Don’t touch me, fagot.” Danny’s face was full of confusion and rage. “Don’t ever touch me again.”
And in that moment, I felt my heart shatter. Tears threatened to leak form my eyes. I wanted to cut myself into a million pieces. I yearned for death. Anything to take away the intense emotional pain I was feeling. Danny grabbed his books and left, slamming the door as he went I could still hear his words echoing in my mind.
I stayed quiet for awhile, finally becoming aware of how much my head hurt. I had banged it pretty hard when he had pushed me. Slowly, I removed myself from the cold floor, wincing in pain. Using the side of the bench, I hoisted myself up to sit on it. My skull throbbed as I stared at the black and white keys in front of me. I placed my fingers on them and began to play. At first my head rebelled and the sounds that infiltrated its precious quiet, but soon my thoughts were melting away as the piano beneath my fingers. I played almost every piece I knew. Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Lee. I gave no heed to dynamics or phrasing. I just poured my broken heart into that beat-up piano. I was halfway through the Ravel when the practice room door opened.

“ Pretty good,” Dylan admitted. Jordan dropped his bag on the floor and sat next to Dylan by the fountain. “How was yours?”

“Great. I have all these ideas for our piece for the honors concert. When do you think we could go over them?” Jordan had an excited grin on his face.

Dylan loved the way that Jordan smiled. When he saw his face light up like that it made everything inside him melt.

“I’m free now. How about we go over things in the dorm on paper, I can take notes, and then during the afternoon break we can try it out in the practice rooms. That way we will get more done.”

“Cool. Let’s go.”

Ten minutes later Dylan was pulling out his music, notebook, and pencil, sitting on Jordan’s bed. Handing Jordan a copy of the music, he said, “Okay, spill.”

“Wait,” said Jordan, getting off the bed. “We should set the alarm clock so we know when we have to go back. When Jordan was back on the bed, Dylan handed his music back.

“Well, if you take a look at page five, second system, third measure, I think could crescendo there and then take it into a slow, intense bridge with string cadenza,” Jordan pointed out in his music.

Dylan sat there and thought for a minute, making small gestures with his hand. Then he quickly opened his notebook and started writing rapidly. When he finished, Dylan handed his work to Jordan.

“Damn, Dylan,” he said, his mouth agape. “This is amazing.”

“See,” Dylan said, “I used duplets in the cello against the straight rhythm of the piano.” He leaned over to point out the section he was referring to. As his nose grew closer Jordan’s nape, he could smell Jordan’s s soap mingling with the scent of Jordan, himself. This alone was enough to make Dylan’s head spin.

Their faces were now but inches away. Slowly, Dylan closed the gap between them and pressed his lips against an unsuspecting Jordan.

Quickly, Dylan drew back, shocked at what he had done. He tried to explain himself, but got tangled in his words. “Jordan, I… I’m sorry. I… I didn’t mean… I… I… I shouldn’t have…” Dylan continued to mumble his apologies until Jordan cut him off.

“Dylan, shut up.” And with that, he leaned in and kissed him. The kiss was neither innocent nor passionate, but was instead exploratory. Jordan gently parted Dylan’s lips with his tongue. Slipping past the pink flesh, his tongue desperately sought contact with Dylan’s. As their tongues touched for the first time, the younger boy sighed and the kiss deepened. Jordan’s fingers laced themselves into dark strands of hair a top Dylan’s head. You could hear the soft, rapid intake of air from their mouths. The kiss ended as Jordan pulled back so he could breathe properly. Once again, Dylan sat there in amazement.

“Oh my god. That was… that was…”

“Just the beginning.”

Jordan’s mouth was instantly back on Dylan’s, kissing him passionately. It was hot, desperate, and full of desire. Dylan felt as if he were on a sexual roller coaster. The smallest kiss sent him reeling. As Jordan kissed down his neck, a tiny moan was elicited from Dylan’s mouth. He could feel Jordan lingering at his nape, his tongue flicking over the soft flesh. Jordan pushed Dylan onto the mattress, placing himself on top. As Jordan shifted, it created friction on Dylan's already hard erection.

"Jordan..." Dylan moaned.

Jordan slowly slid his hand under Dylan's shirt, stroking his smooth chest. Finding his nipple, he traced it first, and then gave it a gentle pinch. Dylan bucked against Jordan, grinding their hips together. Grabbing the hem of Jordan's shirt, he pulled it up over his head and tossed it onto the floor. Then he looped one finger around Jordan’s necklace and pulled him down for another kiss. Jordan reached beneath Dylan and pulled his shirt off, flinging it on top of his own. Slipping his hand between their bodies, Jordan slid his fingers beneath Dylan’s waistband and…

“Fuck,” swore Jordan and he climbed off Dylan to shut off the alarm clock. “God damn alarm clock.” He crossed the room where their shirts were and slipped on his. Then he tossed Dylan’s at him. “Better hurry up. We only have five minutes till class.” And then Jordan grabbed his bag and left

“Holy shit,” Dylan gasped. And with that, he flopped back down on the bed.

He had just finished the best performance of his life. As he took his bow with the rest of the cast, he could feel a huge grin stretch across his face. What could be better than this? Then Josh looked over to his right.
Aaron.
Although they had only been together for a few short months, Josh knew that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with him. Josh was aware that it sounded cheesy but Aaron had been the one who pulled him out of the obscurity of Halida, Illinois and introduced him to theater. Before Aaron, he was nothing but the new kid from North Carolina. Now he had a place to belong. Now he had someone to belong with.
The cast flooded off the stage and into the audience. Josh was immediately swarmed by family and friends.
“Oh my gosh, you were amazing.”
“I never knew you played guitar.”
“I didn’t know it was going to be so obscene.”
Josh smiled. “Come on Mom. It couldn’t have been that bad.”
“Honey, they were practically having sex onstage.”
“Ok, so I admit that one part was pretty risqué. Still, the show overall was good, right Mom?”
“Yes, Josh. And you were great. Have you seen Aaron? I was hoping to congratulate him.”
Josh shrugged. As per usual, he was probably surrounded by his throng of groupies. Aaron was most popular guy in Theater Company at ABA.
Just then, Josh was approached by a student from the Academy’s newspaper.
“Hi, my name is Alaina Hernandez with the ABA Chronicles. I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions about your performance tonight.”
“Sure,” Josh nodded. “Anything for the students of ABA.”
“Great.” She pulled out a notebook and removed the pencil from her ponytail. “So, after working on this show for four months now, what would you say is the most important thing we should take away from the performance?”
Josh thought for a moment. “I guess the most important message that RENT gives us is to cherish every day as if it is your last. You never know what the next day is going to bring. You could die tomorrow. We should just live our lives to the fullest.
“And do you think being a part this show helped you to get the most out of each day?”
“Of course. I learned so much while I was on the set. I would definitely say it was worth my time.”
“What was the best part about working with the cast and crew?”
“The cast and crew were great. There wasn’t a rehearsal where we weren’t playing jokes and laughing. We really work well together as a group. I have to admit we got really lucky with the chemistry this year.”
“And what was the hardest part of the performance for you?”
“The final scene where Mimi is dying. It was so hard to make the audience think it was real. For me personally, it was hard because I’ve never really lost anybody before.”
“Well, let’s hope you never have to go through that. Thank you for your time,” she said as she reached out to shake his hand.
He grasped her hand firmly and shook it. “No problem.”
She walked away, leaving Josh alone. As he turned around, he bumped right into Aaron who was holding a bouquet of brightly colored daisies and carnations.
“Which one of the girls who were crowding you gave you those,” Josh said, eyeing up the flowers.
Aaron laughed. “They’re for you, Josh.”
“Oh,” said Josh, feeling stupid. “Thanks Aaron. I have a surprise for you later.”
“Oh, really,” Aaron replied, cocking an eyebrow. He leaned in to whisper something in Josh’s ear. “I think I’ve seen that surprise before.”
Josh pushed Aaron playfully. “Come on, Aaron. You know its not that. Its just that I got some really good news that I want to share with you.”
“Sure you can’t tell me now?”
“Nope, I want to save it till we are alone.” Josh grinned. “Just trust me.”
“Fine,” Aaron said, pretending to be exasperated. Then he smiled. “Wanna take the bus with me?”
“Let me ask my mom first, ok”
“Sure. I’ll wait for you at the door.”

Josh grinned ear to ear as he pulled a white envelope from his bag. “Here,” he said handing it to him.
“Dear Mr. Evans. We are pleased to inform you,” Aaron read, “that you have been accepted to The Chicago Institute for the Arts for the 2004-2005 college term.” He looked up at Josh. Soon they were embracing each other in a big hug.

Devon’s stomach lurched. It was one thing to stand in front of an audience pretending to be someone else. It was something completely different to stand and have every inch of your body to be studied in explicit detail, and not even while pretending to be someone else.
“Carmen, Leah, Aaron, Lauren, and…”
Please not me. Anyone but me.
“…Devon.”
Shit. Devon grabbed his backpack and headed toward the art class with the others.


Walking into the classroom, Devon’s senses were overwhelmed with color. The walls were plastered with students’ paintings and pictures of famous pieces of art. Even the storage cabinets were painted with a mural. The desks were arranged in somewhat of a circle around a table in the center of the room.
“Morgan, could you hand me that chair by the wall for the models, please?” A thin, pale girl with long brown hair grabbed a wooden painted with shooting stars and handed it to Miss Midlothian, who set it on top of the table.
“I would like to welcome Mr. Wright’s students to our class. They will be our models for today. So,” she said, turning to Devon and the others, “who wants to go first?”
Devon wished he could just crawl up and die. The last time he had felt like this was when during his first theater performance in middle school where he forgot every single one of his lines. But that was six years ago.
Devon looked at Lauren and Carmen. Both were raising their hand. His mind gave a sigh of relief. He wouldn’t have to be first. Maybe he just needed a little time to get psyched up so he could do this. Don’t worry he told himself. Just relax. Think of it as another stage, another performance.
