I've got myself a normal lens for my D40x today. As the title says, it's a Nikkor 35mm f/1.8, which acts like a 52mm analogue lens (hence "normal") and appears to be more light-sensitive and overall sharper than the Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 that I've exclusively used before as it came in a kit with my camera. But that is no surprise, I've read before that normal lenses are sharper due to their fixed focal distance. In other words: I'm happy and immediately had to try out my new lens while doing my laundry. As soon as the weather is getting better I'm going to take it out to the Karlsaue, a landscape park here in Kassel.

I was asked about priting methods and a couple of spontaneous questions about paper finishing. I've passed the exam with 92% so that all in all I should receive 83% on my final report, which I guess I will receive via mail during the next couple of weeks. I'm a learnt publishing assistant now.

Other than that I'm very sorry to leave Braunschweig tomorrow. Most of my belongings are already stuffed away in boxes. On the other hand, I'm happy to begin my "Civilian Service" (9 months long compulsory alternative social service for those refusing to join the army for basic military service) in Kassel in February.

So today I received the first results from my final exams, that is, the written part. The oral part is due on 9th January. However I scored almost as I predicted just from my gut feeling right after the tests:

Publishing and Marketing: 81% (counts 40% of the final grade)

Economy and Social Affairs: 84% (counts only 10% )

Accounting and Controlling: 73% (counts 20%)

Accounting went better than I thought actually. Now, to receive a 'good' on the whole thing I need to be >85% in the oral exam (which counts 30%).

As for my left knee, it's slowly recovering finally, I am wearing a kind of bandage that's like a sock with silicon parts in it so as to support the knee joint. In addition, I was prescribed to take Ibuprofen for five days (i.e. until Sunday) because besides being a pain med it also works against inflammations apparently. So as it looks like I should be more or less fit again until January, which would be very nice after all.

Other than that, Happy (early) Holidays to you all

Going back home to Braunschweig from Kassel last week, I had to run to the track my train was on in just two minutes with all my luggage. This made my left knee hurt pretty much, and last Friday when it was only a little bit better I went to the doctor. He said it may be that I hurt the cartilage behind my kneecap, which must get better again on its own. For the time being, it hurts to go by bike, and walking hurts as well sometimes. I really feel like an old man, not being able to walk properly. In addition to the pain in my left knee I woke up with a toothache this morning, and from how it feels as well as examining my mouth with a small hand mirror and a flashlight it looks like one of the molars has a hole in it, or at least some kind of fissure. So I will call at the dentist's tomorrow and hopefully go there right after work...

However I'm glad that the written part of my final exams is over now. Publishing was OK, so was Economy. Only Accounting was one guessing game because Accounting really isn't one of my strengths. The oral part will be at the beginning of January.

This posting is in English again (instead of my artificial language geekery passtime), for general understanding and seriosity ...

Well, the last 3 days I have passed in Kassel, Germany at the EC Germany headquarters, for "try-out" working. The reason is, my job training as a publishing clerk will be over in January, so I'll be free for the military or social service again as of February, since every young German man between 18 and 23 (I think) must serve the German army for 9 months, or alternatively work in a social business of sorts for the same time. I haven't yet, so I decided to do the latter, i.e. social service. The EC (or in English, CE) is an international Christian youth organisation I'm a member of, and my first thought was to apply for a position as "Zivildienstleistender" there. All in all the work I had to do was quite different from my usual work at the office, because "Zivis" usually get to do more basic tasks, like in my case handcrafting work like renovating or garden work or general janitor's tasks, besides some office work. Still I think there's a lot to learn in this area for me, which I think should prove to be quite handy later. The other Zivis made a friendly impression as well, though living in a shared flat is something new for me. However it doesn't seem too bad either. Leaving Braunschweig in January certainly makes me sorry a bit on the other hand, since I've been living here for over 2 years now and meanwhile have feelings of home for this place. I'm curious how it'll all work out in the end however. Next thing to do is passing my final exams, and that's already reason to worry enough because a) I (naturally, I guess) hate any kind of final exams and b) I probably won't manage to go through all the stuff we dealt with during the past 2¼ years but still kind-of feel like I need to know everything, though I know the whole thing is more for proving to have a general grasp of the publishing business, so it should be manageable.

Again one year older: 22 as of now. Got myself as kinda-birthday-present-to-myself the laptop finally, and Ubuntu didn't make any difficulties regarding the setup. The only things that don't work yet are the sound inputs, and probably the modem. The laptop doesn't have a webcam, so that is not an issue either The battery only lasts about 2¼ hours as compared to the 3 hours they told me in the shop and the 5 hours given in the official specs, no matter whether the wifi is active or not, but I think 2¼ hours is fair enough given that the machine was rather cheap for a laptop. However everything that needs to work in order to be productive works. I still haven't figured out a couple of things like e.g. how to hook the laptop up to a beamer or making my monitor act as a second monitor, but a linux-geek buddy of mine has said he'll come around sometime by the end of this week (well, I hope he will!) to help me getting things working. Other than that I got a new watch (as a birthday present) because my old one was broken, and since I already have had the old one for about 10 years I didn't feel like investing another €50 to get it repaired. Walking around for two weeks without one is kind of not really nice because you always have to look at your mobile or look out for a clock somewhere around you, instead of just looking at your wrist. I haven't yet planned to party however, as I am not very much of a party person.

OK, instead of getting a second lens, I'm rather going to invest €550 into a laptop (Acer Travelmate 5720 5B2G16, no OS). I hope it will arrive until next week's Saturday. I'll have an Ubuntu-installing session then ... It'll tear a nasty hole into my wallet (or rather, bank account), but I think it's a good deal as other laptops from the Travelmate series go over the counter for about €700 and more.

The bad thing is my bicycle has been stolen from the backyard. Fortunately it wasn't worth anymore the 600 marks (I think?) I payed for it some eight years ago, but it's quite a loss nevertheless because I have been restricted to walking during the last two weeks. Busses can be a pain in the ass here in Braunschweig. However it has turned out quite hard to find used bikes. All bike shops here only sell new ones as it seems, but I'm not willing to spend another €300 (~$440 as of now) on a new bike.

And seriously, it is only mid-August and I already need to heat in the evening ...

This year without an own camera, not even just to make snapshots, has definitely sucked long enough already.

Regards
Carsten

--

EDIT (03/19/2008): I now hold this shiny in my hands -- but I won't be able to take it with me on holidays because the SD card I ordered with it hasn't arrived yet There wasn't one bundled with the camera unfortunately. I hope it will until tomorrow 9 am, but if it doesn't, meh. I'd either have to ask someone to borrow me one, or I have to get another SD card from a real life computer shop. Actually I had already spent enough money on the camera, so I don't feel like buying another SD card just because of this issue. OK, granted, they're not that expensive if smaller or equal to 1 GB compared to the camera.

--

EDIT (03/21/2008): The memory card has just arrived really just in time. I was waiting for the bus to take me to the station when it arrived. The bus stop is just 100 m away from my house, so I quickly ran back to check my mailbox when I saw the postman. Indeed there was a letter in my box with the card in it

OK, I'm still saving money for a new (and, hopefully, better) camera. Nothing in sight yet, though -- forgive the pun. Problem is, this photo stuff is all so expensive ... Sure I'd like to have a DSLR, but I wonder whether that won't be too expensive, because as far as I can see you already pay about € 600 (US$ 885.90 at the moment) for just a body and the default lens that comes with a beginner-level camera. That is, if you buy things unused. *sigh* On the other hand, I'm fed up with not being able to do the slightest manual adjustments to the aperture, exposure and focus of a shot.

So I have finished my four weeks 'work trip' to Hamburg yesterday, and I'm kind of glad to be back home in my own flat again. Not that it was bad, having been quartered in a hotel (three stars) was nice and I'm glad for that, too, however a hotel room just doesn't have the same quality as an actual flat: the kitchen's missing, and it's small.

As for being "kind of back", I'll be at my parents' for ten days from Wednesday on, so much for my summer holidays ... no fancy traveling, I still have to save money for a new camera.

As for my recent moving flats, it all worked out nice so far, also thanks to the active help of my parents. Sure, it was stressful, and there was far more to do than we all thought in the beginning — I got the flat unrenovated, so we had to paint stuff, and in fact also the floor and the windows would have to be exchanged sometime, which I of course don't have the money for ... And there is still some more work to do with painting and maybe even repapering the hall, but at least the Room (it's a one-room appartment) looks quite OK and comfortable now. But — I'll never again take a flat in an old building, especially if it's unrenovated: first off, the ceiling in the Room is nauseatingly high with 3.5 m (roughly 11½ ft.), and secondly, not only the floor of my flat, but also the one of the flat above consists entirely of old parquet, which creaks of course ... the joys of old buildings ... On the other hand, getting acceptable flats for €300 (utilities incl.) isn't that easy in this location, which is near to the city, but not quite so much that it's unbearably loud due to the traffic and all. Also, my flat is just about 15-20 minutes away by foot from both Work and School, so you can't beat that! Well ... I'll have to come to an arrangement with the new situation somehow, but I'm all positive that it'll work somehow, at least for the next 1½ years.

In fact, both ways are just 10 minutes by bike then, compared to the current 15 minutes to work and 30 minutes to school.

I still don't have any ambitions to get a new camera ... preparing my move is already devouring enough money.
*sigh* now my camera seems to be entirely broken, not just the battery: I wanted to take a photo two days ago, and the camera just made strange noises when I shut it on, that is, it just hummed quietly and only after a while (and some shaking), there was a picture shown on the LCD screen. However, there flashed some error message on the screen which I encoded to mean "You can't do anything yourself, please have your camera repaired." after some browsing in the manual. The worst thing is that it cannot focus anymore, too, and the objective doesn't slide into the body anymore as well when I shut the camera off. So I took it to the photo shop today and they said, given that it's already five years old, it's no worth anymore to repair it, it'd be less expensive to buy a new camera actually ...

Gah, it seems as if my modem suddenly stopped working last Saturday. I had my telephone line checked by the Telekom but they said there's nothing wrong with it so it must be either my modem or my PC. But then, I haven't changed any configuration neither hardware- nor software-related, and suddenly this stupid little thing stopped working ... I brought it back to the computer shop so as to get my money back. Because they have got only this one kind of 56k modem there and only the few ones that are left on the shelf, I have to try and look for a new and hopefully better modem somewhere else this weekend. My old modem was only one month old, so ... Now let's hope it really was just the modem that broke down and not Windows messing up itself once again without telling me ... Looking at my Windows configurations I can't find anything that seems to be wrong: My computer recognized the modem as such even when it didn't work anymore, so this issue is really obscure to me.

Oh, yeah, in case you wondered how I could post this without internet -- I'm at another PC right now.

Hello all,

I'll start my apprenticeship in the publishing house business next week, and this involves moving away from home for me. Unfortunately, the little appartment I'm hiring for the time being does not have a telephone connection. This means of course that I will not have any internet connection as well, except when I'm visiting my parents once or twice a month, or once a week at work maybe, when I'm nice and ask. It's more than likely that I will become even quieter here on dA than I have been anyway regarding the submission of new stuff, so I don't care when my watchers stop watching me due to that. I'd be very pleased of course if you would stay tuned, though ... I don't know whether I can take my camera with me, since my dad also needs it for his work. Well, there will be some solution I'm sure.

I'm hoping to rejoin as soon as possible, though, but for now at least I have to say goodbye.

Hello!

OK, so here is an explanation about the weird stuff that I have in my sig, in case you've wondered and did not follow the link or if so, wondered even more what purpose [this page] or its contents serve ...

First off, let us have a look at the text in my current sig: Ayarilyam tondayaris naynay ...**. This means, believe it or not, For some people it's art as well .... The sentence is taken from a language called Ayeri (pronounced roughly like uh-YEAH-ri*), and, it is a page with information on this language where you get when you follow the link. But where the heck is this obscure language spoken? Well, nowhere in this world fact, because it is a language that I created. Even I can't speak it fluently. I think making languages is also some kind of art, since the making of a piece of artwork is very much comparable to the creation of an artificial language if you really care for not just making a cipher of English. I could tell you about the grammar that was used in the translation of this sentence, but I spare you that.

Then, there was another sentence appearing on my account's page under "Motto" recently: Ikanaris vomayam na Nahang***. I deleted it for the time being so that I can explain it first: The reason is that someone recently asked me what that is and also if I was in some obscure sect or something. Answer: No, of course not! (I'm a Christian) But it has something to do with believing nevertheless ... In short, the sentence translates as All for the glory of God, because I think that the gifts regarding art I have come from God, and why shouldn't I say "Thank You" to him with the stuff I do?

So now you know.

Cheers,

2002 pageviews when I checked last time! That's been exactly 371 days since I had 1000 pageviews.

However, I'm sorry for not submitting stuff for so long already. It's just, see, I haven't got the time at the moment to go out and make photos and to be true, I don't feel like taking photos either at the moment. So please don't be disappointed and keep looking here from time to time, there'll surely be something new ... sometimes.

Cheers,

Just again what I've already written here as a comment:

You should see the trees here where I live ... Because it's pretty cold at the moment (between around -5 to 0°C), the fog freezes in the morning so that all trees are covered with a layer of ice -- They're all white, while the landscape is just boringly grey. It looks awesome. I wish I had enough time to go out making photos of this, but I'll only get Christmas holidays on December 22, 2004. So if the weather changes until next week to rain for example, well, bad luck then!

Yours,

EDIT (Dec 18, 2004): Last night, it rained. Today it snowed. So no frozen trees anymore .

As for new photos, I think I'll only be able to go out for making photos in October! School kills much of my spare time since the new school year started two weeks ago. See, we're going to write 20 class tests until this semester ends at the end of January. My timetable sucks, too. I have school until 3:30pm nearly every day. And then much homework and learning for the mentioned class tests
