Somehow I can spend hours and days playing towards arbitrary goals with no real meaning, and no benefit, but when it comes to doing something real, I can never focus long enough see things through.

How do you keep yourself motivated?

Anyway, I've been working on a bunch of pics, but none of them have been going to plan, or inspiring me enough to finish them; but i went looking for some new lineart and managed to fire through a pic from start to finish in one afternoon-

I just spent a few hours cleaning up my DA watch list - before I started I was watching just over 1400 people. Now I'm down to 800.

So many abandoned accounts overrun with spam, neglected for years. So many people for whom DA was a quick fad or a phase. So many who leave and take all their work with them unhappy.

I'd expected to cut down my list a bit, but almost half the people I watch have either faded away or flat out left. Quite sad really.

I am impressed that I managed to wrench myself away from Fallout 3 and Far Cry 2, and was glad that my copy of Left 4 Dead only arrived this morning as no doubt it would not have been finished on time if I'd had that temptation.

And it was easy.

So far I've saved myself over £600 ($1200), which has gone on a new computer and stuff, and the rest is going on my Pandora when it comes out - not smoking is awesome!

Now all I need to do is stop being a fat bastard and lose some weight!

The results didn't link to any of my art, but instead I found a thumbnail of "Caught in the Act" on the first page of results (original piece found here - [link]).

Initially I thought the linked page contained a copy of my image, but it didn't. Turns out Cuil uses my thumbnail on nearly every page for the search as one of it's random "related images".

To add insult to injury - the actual original image which was used without permission doesn't even appear near the top of the search results! So my art is relevant enough for you to steal, but not to actually appear in the search results!

Wow - I just got a message from Martin Perreault ([link]) - agent and photographer to Bianca Beauchamp ([link]); saying that he really liked my portrait of Bianca, and that they'd like a high-res copy for their collection! Definitely the best message I've ever received!

This was definitely the boost I needed: I showed the last portrait I did to the Model/Photographer, and they really didn't like it, and requested I didn't post it here, so I was pretty crushed, and didn't post, or do any work for a couple of months.

But now I'm feeling good, and I'm off to do another portrait (or ten) of Bianca, and to re-work the old one. :)

Last night I looked over all the work I'd ever done. It's a little under 7 years and a few hundred pics since I began colouring. There are big gaps when I've done nothing for months; pieces that really pushed me; pieces I'm still proud of. Then there's the half-finished, the almost-rans and the ones which barely got started.

I read through some comments which I'd saved a long time ago, and one really struck me:

"Grandfather, you are going to be famous someday"

I realised that I'd lost the drive I used to have. I used to need to be better; I experimented; I pushed myself. Now I was barely enjoying it.

But today was different. As soon as I started working on something, I couldn't stop. I worked for over 10 hours today. I did things which didn't work out, but I was trying again. It felt good to get a bit of the spark back.

I hope I can hold on to it.

Tonight I'll go to bed looking forward to what I can do tomorrow, and where I can go from there. Maybe one day I will be famous, maybe not. But I know I can be better.
