because that night was not special. nothing like any of the mass demonstrations days beforehand or the desperate mass exodus of thousands to west germany. nothing special was said by günter schabowski, official of the socialist unity party of (eastern) germany. he merely announced the lifting of all travelling rules for citizens of east germany.

which motivated tens of thousands of people to immediately go to the berlin wall and demand their right to cross the border. the vastly outnumbered border guards simply opened the access points and allowed them through - leading to a revolution without a single shot being fired and the biggest spontaneous party berlin had ever seen.

people on the streets created the historical facts that lead to the end of the cold war and the reunification of germany.
that evening was made possible by reforms in eastern europe - namely hungary and poland, especially by people like polish trade union activist lech wałęsa and his solidarność.

lesson from those events?
1. peaceful change is possible.
2. your voice counts. grassroots campaigns can move the world.
3. some warm, rainless autumn nights are always helpful when trying to get people on the streets to demand political participation.

however, to be able to use that service i've got to obtain a U.S. Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). which means filing some forms i've never even heard of before. in a language that's supposed to be english, but is hardly recognisable as such (i've read latin inscriptions easier to translate).
AND i have to verify my identity by attaching at least TWO notarised documents with full personal information. big brother much?

so either i have 30% less to give to charity (as already stated in another journal: i have a secure job and don't need that money) or i'm stripping myself naked in front of the beaurocratic bloodsuckers.
what a choice.

there are valid points for both sides: 'thank you' notes show appreciation and respect for the effort of recognising another artist's work (yes, even if it's just a drag-and-drop-recognition).
i'm aware many people are doing it for the pageviews and i certainly don't complain if i gained a watcher or two from these messages. but i think it's foremost about community spirit and politeness - both shouldn't be switched off as soon as going online.
but politeness for its own sake is a rather empty cause. and there are the hours answering my messages every time i log into DA. the latest artwork i submitted got almost 100 s and comments on the first day alone - which i still don't understand, normally wallpapers hardly get any recognition here, ANYWAY:

i've already had to resort to copy-and-paste messages for years, but i tried to keep them witty and nonrecurrent. even that i can't do anymore. i simply lack the time and i'd rather invest the bit of creative time i have into making more art.

so from now on i'll only post 'thank yous' for adding work i think of as underappreciated and i will at least try to comment/fav more in other galleries, instead. several people suggested that and i also think it's a better form of paying tribute. i personally appreciate comments more then a random , because they take more effort to make (at least if they're more elaborate than "love it, post more").

so one last time for tradition's sake ... "thanks for reading random rants."

just two days till holidays are starting for me.

going back to work too early after my little hospital adventure has drained my batteries. i desperately need some time off. i'm starting to make mistakes that shouldn't happen - like forgetting to lock important doors and such.
and i haven't seen my family since august.

i can't wait for thursday to get back to this tiny village in the middle of nowhere, with its ugly weather and boring atmosphere - which is the most beautiful place on earth around this time of the year. every building in even the smallest alleyway is illuminated to the point where street lights are pointless. snow for christmas EVERY year.

some nice calm days before running wild in london.
we will have fun, even if his nibs isn't up to being on stage in january. *winks to certain people*

first: congratulation to the american people for voting someone intelligent into the oval office again.
second: thank you, american people, for getting yourself interested in politics again - actually starting to reflect on your government again. too bad it took a financial meltdown to motivate that development. still: isn't it a good feeling to know you are able to choose the driver of the car you're sitting in? even if this car is going down a cliff?
but don't get too starry-eyed about your messiah. idealistic as he might be, he's going to have to face the harsh reality of ... well REALITY and lobbyism - whoever paid his election campaign will want their money back in one way or the other. my only wish is for him to he keep his promise of always telling you the true state of things - however inconvenient this truth might be.

it's up to you to take things in hand, too. voting is just a start.
a bit less of loving of your country and a bit more of loving your neighbours, please. as nice as they are - abstract principles and cuddling your flag won't help in times like these. now turn off FOX (execpt for watching 'simpsons' ) and get involved with the talents YOU have to offer.

after a long, sleepless night on saturday which redefined my personal scale of pain i admitted myself to the local hospital. both doctors in the emergency ward had been up for 48 hours, so i forgive them for not getting that needle into my arm correctly and having me bleed across the floor for several minutes. i was otherwise occupied so i hardly noticed.
turned out i caught myself a nasty pyelitis. yay me!
just got out yesterday and i'm currently rejoicing in the side affects of the antibiotics i have to take.

i'm as they say 'dead on my legs', but happy.
the school trip was amazing, especially the students. no whining if something took longer than anticipated and not even the usual alcoholocausts at night. i personally suspect the campsite's landlord lacing the drinking water with valium.
the weather was also very stable (well, it did rain cats and dogs on our first day in rome, but otherwise...) and we got temperatures around cozy 24°C.

both the eternal city and pompeii were full of british and american tourists. i blame the BBC's documentaries for this.
even saw a guy in a DALEK shirt, but restrained myself from asking him if he was there to admire the Doctor's work. other tourists were less of a joy: who in their right minds would fly across the pond only to spent their whole time chatting up the folks back home while being lead through one of the best preserved examples roman heritage? and i swear i'll get aggressive if i hear certain sentences one more time ("oh, how old everything here is!" ... "look at all the culture!").

southern italy is so different from the north. i finally understand what (bless you!) meant in her comments.
it was as if someone had drawn a line south of Montecassino: no more older buildings, just heaps of rectangular cheap blocks piled over each other to use every last bit of space. mostly poor looking, but often lovingly painted in warm sunny tones. forests of sign posts at day, only to be replaced by their flashy illuminated versions at night. naples is a moloch of waste and exhaust fumes, littering the landscape even a hundred miles away from the city itself.
the people seem to lead a simplier life, their priorities much more focussed on their families. witnessed a wedding - the word 'joyful' hardly fits the village festival it became.
and no: i did not get robbed. nobody of our group did (if you don't count cheap souvenirs). just to comment on that cliché...

in one sentence: a world completely different from everything a standart tuscany tourist will know, but still very italian.
i'd recommend it any day.


good news part II: london

all hamlet tickets were sold out within 3 hours (= at noon of september 12th).
somehow we were still able to order our tickets online during a small time window about 10 hours later. i don't know how, but who am i to question fate?
so i'll be spending the first evening of the new year dating patrick and david.
and don't you both dare to break your leg in some drunken accident the night before (for i will personally hunt you down, club you with your own cast and demand a private performance of the play)!!!

italians do have a refreshing approach to cars and driving. traffic signs and speed limits are understood as nice recomendations, not as rules. which means everybody drives the way they want to. which is a liberating experience once you embrace that philosophy. at least nobody seems to fight a personal private war when driving on the autostrata, quite contrary to some people on the german autobahn, who seem to consider their bmw/audi/mercedes a doomsdayish weapon.

italians don't have to contemplate murder by car assault - their roads are risky enough. the way they built narrow, bumpy roads alongside abysses is very ... bold. using them makes you appreciate life as a gift.
same goes for the road (and i'm *really* stretching that definition now) leading to our destination.

the family of our landlord was living on the second floor above two flats they rented to tourists.
massimo and sandra were a lovely couple. they had two young daughters and their nonna (grandmother) was also living with them. she told us she was from pompeii originally, which certainly explained her vulcanic temperament. the rest of the family consisted of four dogs and five cats as well as countless neighbours visiting so often you sometimes thought they never left.
exactly what we wanted: typical italian family. or so we thought.
then the chanting started.
considerably enthusiastic, almost four hours a day - two at breakfast, two in the evening. turned out we had found ourselves a few of the ca. 45,000 buddhists residing on the catholic mothership.
we got used to that kind of wake-up call the same way we stomached the almost 40°C outside - by ignoring it.
now i'm almost missing both of it.

i won't go into detail regarding the cultural sights and monuments we visited - let's just say whoever knows names like perugino, signorelli, giotto, cimabue and raphael may understand the nerdgasm we got. guess i'll comment further on my photos.

most of the evenings were spent in decent restaurants (easy to distinguish from tourist diners by not having bilingual menues, but italian guests instead - and still being affordable nonetheless). i fear my two travel companions went a bit far when it came to their appreciation of gastronomic specialties. they called it "sensuous exploration of the umbrian cuisine", i called it gluttony and started quoting dante's description of mortal sins. my friends went out to dine on their own the following evening. nonetheless we got along quite well.

the last two weeks have been a great experience i will continue zu illustrate to you with my photographs.
i could write much more, but will refer you to my recent artworks instead of boring you any further.

but watching my students work on their drawing assignments made my fingers itch to do the same.
of course i've drawn portraits before. but drawing random actors was never my cup of tea - most of them are symmetrical, perfectly proportioned, flawless ... and therefore absolutely no fun to work with.
it's different with Doctor Who: many unusual, expressive faces, people i could look at all day. i like that about the series' casting (even though the 2005 series has it's share of traditional beauties, they are not bland).

don't know how long this phase will hold on, but be prepared for some more pictures of that sort.

i'm currently doing some "stockslaving" and wanted to share my experiences:

SHUTTERSTOCK: [link] (shameless referal link ), which is the largest microstock agency also seems to be the most lucrative one in many people's opinion. i'm too new there to to be sure but it seems to have a lot of potential - also if you are in the illustration buisness (many of their vectors suck, pixelgraphics are poor) or have untypical subjects in photography. textures also seem to sell quite well.
they are paying a fixed price ($0.25) per download - which sounds like nothing - but since it's a subscription-based agency, many designers download much more than they actually need.
p.s.: be aware - reviewers there are a bunch of noise-nazis ... they demand very clear photos.
p.p.s.:i'm currently making about $10 a day so buisness is doing quite well.
update: got my paycheck for march: $360 *smiles smugly*

SHUTTERSTOCK: [link] (shameless referal link ), which is the largest microstock agency also seems to be the most lucrative one in many people's opinion. i'm too new there to to be sure but it seems to have a lot of potential - also if you are in the illustration buisness (many of their vectors suck, pixelgraphics are poor) or have untypical subjects in photography. textures also seem to sell quite well.
they are paying a fixed price ($0.25) per download - which sounds like nothing - but since it's a subscription-based agency, many designers download much more than they actually need.
p.s.: be aware - reviewers there are a bunch of noise-nazis ... they demand very clear photos.
p.p.s.:i'm currently making about $10 a day so buisness is doing quite well.

been a member there for over half a year - haven't sold a single picture ... but they are mostly looking for traditional stuff - so if you shoot beautiful young girls with mobiles ... be my guest they'll give you 50% of every sold picture... this agency is quite pricey so they are mostly frequented for print-licensed stuff .. not much going on in illustration and vector section.

my application in their photo section is currently pending. seems also very traditional on subjects, don't know about the illustration section, though. you get paid a percentage of the pic's price.

it took a while for me to find a decent print-on-demand service (heard a few unsettling stories about the DA print service, so i do not choose to use it). but now - tadaa!

i just cleaned up my HD and found some stuff that might be of service for you people. opened a stock account at DA to host those high-res images. started out with drops and wooden structures - i'm open for suggestions - maybe i have just what you need on my harddrive.

you are free to use these files in any non-profit artwork that does not support racial, sexual or religious discrimination. just send me a note and link to me in your finished artwork.

after i collected my jaw from the floor (which took about a minute or so) i looked over the list.

i just wanted to express how touched i am reading your kind words and critics - i appriciate that sooo much.

please forgive me for needing some time to get to reply/comment all of you (if i ever come around to get all of you, that is). being still in influenza's grip doesn't make things easier.
