In keeping with the current theme of things across the world my current employer is looking to downsize the workforce on the account so I siezed the opportunity to take Voluntary Redundancy (severance to my US watchers ) - after 22 years with the company and with the package they were offering it would have been rude not to really

No idea what I'm going to do as yet but one thing is for sure; I'll be having a 6 month break away from any sort of career.

It's disappointingly similar in appearance to my 40D - I'd built it up in my head somewhat so I think I was expecting a camera the size of a small house that gave me hug when I unboxed it and then went off and took pictures for me I rattled off a couple of test shots in my loft here - the clarity and details are incredible.

Hopefully I'll get out this weekend to use it properly but I have Tendonitus in my left foot at the moment and am off work resting it, so it might just be a trip around my garden. The anti-inflamatory tablets my Doc prescribed give me wind and weird dreams, not a winning combination for a good nights sleep. You probably didn't need to know that, sorry.

So - expect more of the same old crap from me but in higher definition

I've updated the voting how to a bit. I've gone through and numbered the pictures so please just note me with the numbers relevent to your choices - it's easier all round - so that's three number, one for each catagory just to make that clear It doesn't matter whether you entered or not, you can still vote.

It's amazing how good the threat of outsourcing is as a motivator . As an added bonus I also got one of the new MCTS qualifications in the process. Next is the 2008 server track but I've vowed not to book anymore exams until I've finished my current painting.

As a kind of celebration but mostly because I enjoyed the last one so much I've decided to run another competition in the near future. I think the theme is going to be "Autumn" as it's my favourite season but more details will follow sometime in September so watch this space

For the last couple of years I've been in crisis of conscience over whether to get an aircon unit for my attic room or not. Finally, this weekend, I gave in and bought one. No more sitting in my loft in my underpants looking like I've just run a marathon in a tinfoil boilersuit. My neighbours are now safe from inadvertant glimpses of my hairy white butt decending a ladder (too much info? sorry ).

I've actually been able to sit up there to do some painting for the last two nights, languishing in the almost chilly 20 degree temperature, it's great. Anyway, in an effort to reduce my carbon footprint and offset this new burden on our climate I'm going to shave my cats. I'm not sure how it will help but it should be a laugh

Up - last weekend I took a KTM 990 Adventure out for a days test ride and fell in love - deposit paid and I get the bike sometime in June. It's black of course and if you're at all interested look here [link]

Down - During the weekend my Duke started making some horrible top end noises and a little investigation lastnight unearthed a collapsed cam follower bearing which had subsequently seized and destroyed the lobe on the camshaft as well so she's off the road until the parts arrive.

Up - Today, I dug my old 1979 GS550 out of the shed where it has been sat for the last two years. I stuck a half charged battery on it, turned the fuel tap to "prime" and charged the carbs with two year old petrol that was swishing about in the bottom of the tank, switched on the ignition, kicked her over twice and she rumbled into life. After a brief warmup she sat there ticking over a treat - who'd have thought

A beautiful image that just makes me smile everytime I look at it. I've seen photography described as "painting with light" and always thought it was a little pretentious but this image gives that description a whole lot more weight in my books

This morning I passed the first of four exams needed to get my 2003 MCSA with a score of 914 out of a 1000. I was kind of suprised as I hadn't expected to scrape past the pass mark of 700 by much if at all . Three more to go and then an upgrade to 2008 - I hate exams.

Spring is here with a vengance; My lovely Silver Birch is halfway to unfurling it's new leaves - always the first out and the first to drop. My fish have woken up and demand food whenever I walk past the pond. The birds are driving me mad with their dawn chorus that seems to start about an hour before dawn. Things are generally looking alive again which is great

I'd like to have a competition

I don't want to exclude people by having a particular category or a specific theme so I thought I'd have a "Do what you do best and submit the result" theme. I'll display all entries in my journal and will choose my favourites - not on any technical merit but purely based on what appeals to me most. I'm running a 20.1" widescreen at 1680x1050 and when I post pictures I tend to leave them at a size that looks OK on my screen. My Dad has a 19" standard screen but it only runs at 1280x1024 and the difference it makes to viewing, say, a picture at 800 x whatever (portrait) is suprising - as in how much you can see in one go. It got me thinking about what the concensus is on the best average size to post a picture at and what the average screen size/resolution is these days (do people still use 15" screens?).

So - question - what size screen do you have and at what resolution do you run it (I'm not interested in make and model ). Also what do you think is the best average size to be posting at?

Topic for discussion - I know it's been done a thousand times but I'm always interested in peoples views on this subject and there are people on my watch list whose opinions I've not heard but would be of interest to me

To me it's any creation (and creation is a key word for the next paragraph ) that stirs an emotion in or a response from me, be it love, hate, revulsion, interest, fear, adoration etc. etc. There are those who's view is that art is nothing more than a pretty picture hanging on a wall that's pleasing to the eye. On the other extreme you have artists whose only aim is to cause controversy or spark discussion on sensitive issues that might otherwise go unnoticed. Then there's everything in between - it's used to promote governments, create motiviation during conflict, demonise subcultures, promote business, brighten up chimney breasts and so on.

My other thought - and possibly a sensitive one to some; is photography in it's purest form actually art. i.e. is it creative? Sure studio work involves a lot of setting up, still life requires knowledge of composition and colour etc. - that's a given. But is simply taking a camera - looking at a scene that is "nice" or that the photographer feels protrays something they wish to say and then pressing a button to capture it, actually creative? After all, it could be argued that the scene already existed, the photographer has simply captured it with no real input other than the technical aspect (and this can even be absent in the case of a full auto). My thoughts are that yes, it can be but depends heavily on other inputs from the photographer - view point, making the best of natural composition and so on. However, with this in mind, should the post-processing of images really be looked down upon by the purist photographer (and reading some of the commments on deviations on this site I know it is to some extent)? Afterall, as an artist you'd be expected to use the tools and materials available to you to produce the image you desire, no?

Anyhoo, I'm in danger of rambling and tying myself in knots here so over to you if you feel like it - What do you think?

It was the same when i was walking at the coast yesterday, litter strewn throught the dunes. I even happened across the remains fo a camp fire in the middle of the grass covered dunes. Only sheer luck must have prevented it getting out of hand and spreading across the knee hight dry dune grass. If people can't even respect the environment they live then what hope is there?

I dispair, really I do, no wonder this planets going downhill fast.

New toys! Just bought my first quality tripod (well compared to the £15.00 I got off fo ebay some time back anyway). I was fed up coming back from outings with loads of very slightly blurred images, especially when taking closeups. I'm not the most stable person on two feet at the best of times and it seems that when you're really trying hard not to move you do so all the more. I doubt this will make my photography any better but at least they'll be in focus. Probably.

Oh, and does anybody want any gnat bites - I have about 18 I no longer require

The last few pictures I've posted on here have been produced on a calibrated monitor. When I look at them on my monitor at work or on a friends PC they look completely different but not in a particularly good way. It's a little worrying though because it now makes me wonder what other people see my pictures like - it's not something I'd ever considered before. Perhaps I should put a disclaimer on them "results may vary" or something

Does anybody else use one or have an opinion on the whole idea of calibration? I'd be interested in your views.

Not a huge amount of progress but it's getting there

Half way through my week off and the weather has let me down again. I went for a ride to the North Nofolk coast today hoping to take some pics along the beaches but the cloud was grey and gloomy and the light was just not up to it. I was determined to take some pictures though and you can see the result in my latest submission - more clouds I'm afraid

On the upside I've tipped over the 400 page views mark (Woohoo ) and I've also just clocked 10000 and some miles on my KTM just in time for it's second birthday. Must be time for a new bike soon

It's supposed to rain tomorrow so looks like I'll get a day working on my painting - I always struggle to sit at my drawing board when the weather is nice.

It felt good. I was worried that it would take a while to get back into the technique but it was just like riding a bike, only without so much pedaling and I could still breath and walk afterwards I have some ideas for paintings to come so am keen to get this one finished. I might take some pictures to show it as a work in progress before the finished thing if anyone is interested?

Up wanders Grimley the fat black cat, sniffs the cement, sniffs the sniffs the ramp and sticks one paw up to his elbow in the cement. At this point he's not entirely sure which path is best so has another sniff of the ramp before sticking the other front paw in. Still uncertain he follows up with a back leg. At this point the ramp is obviously winning the mental battle and he makes a move for it resulting in the last remaining back paw making an imprint closely followed by another from the front. Finally he steps onto the ramp and deposits a cementy trail of paw prints through the doorway and across the conservatory floor. I reached for my trowel and a sponge.

I managed to get a few snaps taken around the garden. I had wanted to get up to the coast or over to the woods but events conspired against me ^^^^. Still, only three days at work this week and then it's a nice long weekend off for my birthday. If I can get a couple of hours to myself I fully intend to grab my camera, jump on the bike and cruise around some country lanes looking for inspiration.

And remember always....errr...oh, I forget - it'll come to me later.
