Thank you!" />

Last Thursday i went to Mulhouse, France, just accross the border. I went there with a friend who's an experienced archer to buy a recurve bow. I got a beautiful blue riser (thing in the middle) and some kick ass limbs. I also got a stabilization system by a brand called SOMA. How cool is that? (This is only funny if you've read Brave New World, which i hope you have, cos it's gooooood!).

I almost spent a months wage in that shop. (worked 60% between terms)

Now i hope i can improve my form over the summer. Maybe shoot 30 and 50 meters outside a few times. And then be ready for my first tournament when the indoor (18m) season starts this fall.

Not much going on in terms of photography at the moment. All the beautiful spring flowers got covered in snow.

But a lot of programming, which i think is also a form of art.

&

I just ordered the coolest T-shirts available on the interweb!

[link]
[link]

I'm thinking of buying a good LCD monitor. And then get some device to calibrate it, so the colours are accurate and prints look like the picture on the monitor.

The LCD market is confusing. The first thing you look at usually is resolution, size and price. And then you wonder why one monitor is smaller and has lower resolution but is much more expensive than another one. So i did a lot of research today. Seems like the thing you want is a monitor with IPS panel technology, as that has better colours. But it's more expensive. But i think i found something. [link]

A laptop screen just isn't the right thing for editing pictures. Not that a new monitor will improve the quality of pictures i post here by much. But it certainly will make it a lot easier to get the colours and contrast right in prints.

I'm also thinking about getting a photo printer. I certainly don't one something cheap where the ink cost a fortune. I'd rather pay more for a bigger printer with bigger ink cartridges. But i'm not sure if i take enough pictures worth printing to justify the cost of such a printer.

Now i've got to to post 8 random facts about myself. Haha! Whoever started this dind't really think about it, didn't they. The only way to do this is if you have a list of all the facts about yourself and then use some method like throwing many dice to chose from them. If i just chose these "random facts" myself they can't be random, that's not how the mind works.

I'm not really into these tagging games, so i'm not going to post the rules which i'm going to break by not tagging anyone.

So here's 8 facts about myself. You can pretend they are random if you feel like it.

1. I've never been outside of Europe, but i've been to a place in Greece where you can see all the way to Asia.
2. A bit over 2 years ago i took medication so i wasn't depressed all the time. These days i think i'm actually a rather happy person.
3. One of the reasons i got my first camera was because i planned to take pictures and then use them as references for painting and drawing.
4. I'm physically in a better shape than at any point in the past 5 years!
5. I only shave once or twice a week.
6. I've never been in a relationship.
7. I plan to get a super job and earn lots of money once i have my masters degree.
8. The colour i wear most often is blue.

If you want to take part in this game but haven't been tagged by anyone you can pretend i tagged you.

This week two of my butterfly pictures reached the monumental mark of 10 favourites!
Let's celebrate with a little butterfly collection. There's always one of mine in every three pictures. Usually the worst one.

In related news: some very, very, very nice person bought me another three months of subscription.

Owl Butterflies

Three different species of Owl butterflies. The owl butterfly is the biggest butterfly you're going to find at a butterfly house. There are some Moths that are even bigger. I likes shadow and rarely opens it's wings.

Longwing Butterflies

Different species of Heliconius. The longwing butterfly gets very old for a tropical/subtropical butterfly (several moths as an adult butterfly). Easy to recognice by the shape of their wings.

Lacewing Butterflies

One of my favourites. A red lacewing and two leopard lacewing. But that's only a guess because the only one i can identify with any certanity is the malay lacewing.

Emerald Swallowtail
    ...

It's an old design. It's made of good quality plastics. But the focus ring is tiny and it you can't use the focus ring while it's on autofocus. It's tiny compared to my other two lenses. 35mm is a bit more than the standard 50mm with the x1.6 crop factor of the 20D. Nice focal length. The optics are good. It's certainly quite usable at f/2 and it's very sharp stopped down a bit. It's pretty flare resistant.

The reasons why i went with this lens:

it's fast (two stops faster than my zoom lens at 35mm)

nice focal length

good price

can focus as close as 25cm resulting in 1:4 magnification

I just put all my extention tubes behind this lens and i think the magnification is more than 2:1, more than what i get with my macro lens and the extention tubes. Focus distance: 2cm.
Some may already have noticed that there are pictures and i've been using html tags in this here journal. Somebody bought a subscription for me for my dAnniversary. Which is a really nice thing to do. I haven't figured out who bought it for me, but i have my suspects.

So i finally got around to have some prints made of some of the butterflies. I got some big ones of Schmetterling XII, XIII, XIV and XVIII.

XVIII looks good, but at f/2.8 there's not enough sharpness to make a big print look interesting for a clos look. But luckily i'm not planning to look at it from a few cm distance.

XIV looks great. f/10 and the butterfly's just about to jump out of the picture. There's sensor dust which is hard to notice and a few artifacts from .jpg compression and/or enlarging.

XIII looks good. The colour's a bit into the yellow ish, but hardly noticeable. It's also not as sharp around the butterflie's eyes as i hoped it would be. Another case of focus beeing just mm off.

XII looks incredible. The colours are popping, sharpness and DOF close to perfect. I think this could be enlarged waaaay further. It's hard to beleive that I took this picture.

Uni started again and it looks like it's going to be a very busy term with loads of work to do.

I decided to take a course in archery. They offer about every kind of sports anyone could possibly be interested in at university.
She's camera less at the moment because her's got stolen. But she's planning to buy a dSLR and once she's got it we're going to the butterfly house together.

Greek food is awesome!
There was this guy Gregor with us. His father is greek. He's been to greece a gzillion times. He know what to order in the restaurant. Here's something delicious he introduces us to the first night out.

[b]Tirokafteri[/b]

INGREDIENTS
8 oz package cream cheese
1 lb feta, crumbled
1 cup lemon juice
1/4 tsp ground White pepper
1/2 cup olive oil
1 cup half&half
4 roasted red peppers, diced 2 tsp.
Tabasco sauce

METHOD
Soften cream cheese in large bowl with mixer. Add feta, lemon juice, and white pepper. Slowly add olive oil until all og the oil is absorbed. Mix in half&half until the miture is smooth and soft. If the mixture is hard, add a little more half&half to soften. Add roasted peppers. Serve with bread.

Greece is awesome. Here's where we went day by day:
1. Athens. Dinner on a roof top terrace with view on the acropolis.
2. 550km up the east coast to Tessaloniki. Lunch in a cute village in the mountains.
3. Another 300km to Alexandopolis. Ferry to the island Samotrake.
4. It rained all day.
5. Boat trip (dolphins!). Loads of driving around by car to make up for the day lost due to rain.
6. We went through stoney goatland to some remote beach. Late afternoon ferry to Alexandropolis.
7. Early morning flight to Athens. Akropolis was free entrance that day. Loads of people. We found the best Gyros ever! Yummy! Evening flight to Santorini. I didn't ask for a window seat but i got one. With island/sunset view!
8. We climbed around in some cliffs and looked at the stones and formations. It's a shame we don't have any vulcanos in Switzerland.
9. Touristic boat trip in the caldera. North wind. The sky was incredibly blue! A view to die for!
10. Climbed around on the remains of a dead vulcano. There were ruins of the town all rich people of the island used to live in. They gave it up because of earthquakes. Swimming at the read beach.
11. Early morning flight to Athens. Some of use decieded to rent a bus to take us to the south of Attika to the temple of poseidon at cap Suonion. Beautiful place! Flight back home in the afternoon.

Many interesting stones were observed. Much delicious food was eaten. Hundreds of photographs were taken. Maybe i can find one or two that are good enough to post here.

real small where'd you hang out? Which places would you enjoy visiting?
This might actually turn into a series.

Much fun was had yesterday in the garden working at minimum focus distance. What i learned was: It's not easy to focus on the eyes of a butterfly, but try focusing on the eight eyes of a spider the size of an eye of a butterfly...!

I found a Kenko extention tube set on ebay for a good price. Extention tubes make the distance between the rear element of your lens and the sensor plane bigger, which results in a closer minimum focus distance. You loose infinity focus, but that doesn't matter with makro work. With the set i will be able to get as close as roughly 1:1.5 !

First day of the new term today. Met some lovely people again. But nine hours without a break for lunch still is a bit much for a monday!
Bees are so busy. As soon as the first flowers are out they at work again. And they only stop every once in a while to clean themselves with their legs.

I saw the first butterfly of the year on monday. It was an orange brownish one.
Exam on monday, and i feel reasonably well prepared.

Today it's much to windy to take photographs of flowers.

I was at the orchid exhibition. And i didn't bring my camera. Hundreds of different orchids and hepi had no camera. But orchids aren't that fun to shoot. They are wonderfully beautiful, but go little detail close up. And their curved petals demand a big f-stop number, which makes things difficult in the light of a big hall. We did buy two orchids. A red one and a violet-brown-white-green one. I might post pictures of those.
I enjoy listening to the new Trespassers William album 'Having'.
That was before the real big snow. We got 70cm in 24 hours! That's a whole lot of snow. I built two snowmen when it started as the snow was just the consisty you want it to be for snowmen. And now they're in snow up to the waist. I might start an expedition to the river tomorrow to get some snowy pictures.

I gotta take my statisics exam again at the end of the month. I was really lazy during the term and the subject not beeing interesting didn't help either. That kinda sucks, but isn't much of a problem. Wont stop me from taking pictures.

Well, well

I got around on the internet quite a bit in recent times. And i found some quite interesting sites when looking for lens & other photography gear reviews! Wanna know what lens to buy. How to properly light a subject? Whether Canons "L" lenses stand for Luxury or Low-value? The principles of composition? How to do extreme macro? Why most landscape shots turn out boring?

Here's some links i found very useful:

Lenses:

For accurate and rather technical lensreviewes go to Photozone.de [link]

For plenty of user reviews and user ratings go to fredmiranda.com (careful, plenty of "L" snobs here) [link]

For well written and illustrated reviews with sample pictures go to the-digital-picture.com. Also features a lens recommendations for given needs and fields of photography [link]

An explanation of the often rather confusing lenspricing [link]

The Canon lens FAQ is her (also featuring general SLR, flash and filter FAQs) [link]

Canon SLR lens forum at dpreview.com (once again: attention "L"-snobbery) [link]

Why it doesn't have to be an "L" [link]

Some useful review, especially affordable wideangle solutions: [link]

The lens with the selective focus. Much fun to be had. Lensbabies.com [link]

Makro

Ectreme Macrography using a reversed wideangle lens [link]

some macro philosophy and techniques: [link]

some more macro technique from close-up lenses to real macro lenses: [link]

The macro forum at fredmiranda.com is amazing. Any questions you have are likely to be answered. Also features amazing examples of basic macro composition by Tom Hicks. You gotta sing up to view it. [link]

I'm sure i forgot quite a bit. I will update this post if i find something good that's missing or if you dears can provide more links!

On related news, i got my lensbaby + macro kit yesterday and it's really as much fun as it promised to be. Sharp pictures aren't everything. With this baby you can easily produce beautiful artsy out of focus picture with a very interesting sweet spot of focus. I will post result soon. My sister loves this lens. She's not much into photography, but she got the hang of it imediatly and took some shots that are better then mine so far!

Have a blast. Enjoy live my dears.

So here's the London story:

Got there in the morning. Heathrow -> Paddington. Paddington station is the best place to arrive in London. This big hall, industrial style. Rain dropping from the roof into buckets. Industrial decay. It's a shame i couldn't take any pictures. My small camera wouldn't have been able to handle the light.
Wandered around the city in the morning. It rained from time to time. I didn't go to the touristy parts. I walked around in new living areas at the Thames. Warehouse, falling apart - modern high security Apartment building - Warehouse. Old next to modern. Expensive next to useless. That was rather impressive.
Met my friend Sam ( ~schlocky ) at 2 in the afternoon at Euston station. He hadn't slept all night due to a combination of esseay deadlines and coffee. Then we met Mark from Whales and later on Sams friend Sonia. She lives in an apartment right next to the river. And they've got a private pier, which you can see in my "London Sunset" picture.
The gig that evening was great. I finally got to see Malory and Ulrich Schnauss. And Sennen were really good as well. After the show i talked to everyone. Ulrich is a nice guy and really humble. Daniel and Daniela from Malory are great people. And Daniela was really hot on stage as well! Later on Robin, the organizer, introduced me to Simon Scott from Slowdive! Slowdive are one of my favourite bands of all time! Simon was a DJ between sets. He gave me the three mix CDs he made for the night and i've been listening to those a lot in the last few days.

After the show we hung out on the private pier. But it was pretty cold. Didn't get much sleep that night.
Next day was more peaceful, with a short trip to camden market beeing the only touristy thing we did. My friends were all "Oh, that's posh" and "that guy has got it made" when we walked around one of the more expensive areas in the evening, which i thought was pretty funny. "Fucking posh" is one of my favourite things to say now.

Next morning i got up at 5:30 only to find out the tube wouldn't open until 7:00. But there was a fox in the tube station! He could get in and out through a small hole. No picture of that either. I managed to get to Heathrow in time anyway, by taking a bus to a place where there were cabs.

Weeee! Great weekend!
I think i've got dust on the sensor. But i know i can fix the bad spots in the good pictures.

Tons of goodies coming!

Tomorrow i'm going to paint my room a light Yellow. Almost white but not quite.

It was the first time i did some serious landscape shots with the 20D. And i've got to say the 17-85 mm lens is a great landscape lens. 17 mm is wide enough for almost everything. And 85 mm is a nice focal length if you want to focus on something and do not want to have to much scenery in the background to distract from the surface.
I'm fascinated with perspective. How the background moves away or comes closer. How you can make things look huge or really small compared to each other at 17mm. It's quite fascinating.

Canon EOS 20D with 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS USM lens is ordered. Now comes the waiting part. Anticipaiting. I've never spent as much money at once before. But it's soooo going to be worth it. I'm going to ask for the 100mm Macro lens for christmas. Not many flowers or insects that time of year. But i can shoot snow crystals or something and get used to the lense until spring.

What else is new? Pretty much nothing. It's cold today. And rainy. Perfect weather to get depressive, but i wont do that.

No book to read right now. I've been reading some novels by Douglas Coupland lately. He's a funny but also thought provocing writer. Last thing i read was 'Hey Nostradamus!' which is about a highscool shooting and the life of a survivour who lost his wife (secretly married in Las Vegas). Good read. 'All Families are Psychotic' was way funnier, which doesn't surprise when looking at the topics. Coupland doesn't come anywhere near Kurt Vonnegut Jr. I'm pretty much obsessed by Vonnegut right now. He's funny. He's serious. He tells the truth. My favourite writer ever. I'd all read his books within a few days if i didn't have to order them. So that's another thing worth looking forward to. The arrival of the next Vonnegut book i ordered.

Here's a small list of funny books that deal with serious topics i enjoyed a lot:

1. Kurt Vonnegut Jr. - Bluebeard
An WWII veteran and techically (but only technically) brilliant painter looks back at his live. Growing up as a son of survivours of the genocide on turkish Armenians. Working for a ultra-realistic painter and control freak. Carmouflage in WWII, the only thing he ever was good at. And an involvemet in the abstract expressionist movement.

2. Douglas Coupland - All Families Are Psychotic
Craziest book ever. A mother, a Father and his new trophy wive. Two sons, one criminal, one suicidal. And a doughter, a successful scientist and a soon to go into space as an astronaut. Despite of having only one had. The all meet up in Florida for the shuttle's start. Add a crazy girlfriend, a religious wife and a boring husband. One crazy thing happens after another bringing them together and making them look over all the bad stuff they've done to each other.

3. DBC Pierre - Vernon God Little
Vernon, living in the barbecue sauce capital of Texas, gets accused of beeing his friends accomplice in a highscool massacre. He tells the story in his own words, in the language of a teenager, how he goes to Mexico. How he get's cought. A book in a refreshingly young language that deals with the columbine massacre, small town southern america and the role of the media.

That was that. I just hope there are some people watching me who are interested in literature so i didn't type all this for nuthin'.
I had one math, two geology and three geography exams. And i passed them all. That means i don't have to learn until the next term stars in octobre!

I took over 900 pictures in the last two weeks. That means i still have tons of material to go through and maybe i can find a few things good enough to post here. That said, i've still got a few ideas for new stuff. So the next few weeks are likely to be busy dA-wise.

I collected quite a bit of serpetinite. Serpetinite is a stone consisting mostly out of the mineral serpentine. It's usually green or black, but i also found some with light blue, white and violett parts. And i only took the ones with the most interesting textures. I want to use them to creat some kind of artwork. Not sure what it's going to be...

...and i got some lovely pictures. But i won't post any landscapes. At least not yet. Cos i got some pictures that are way closer to my heart. Not much is in my gallery tells something about me. But the three shots i'm going to post befor heading back for one more week of mountain-fun are very personal.

The people i watch have been very busy posting new deviations. I'll try to catch up, but i can't promise anything...

Meanwhile check out these two oustanding artists:

Well, not that anyone reads this stuff...
The new album by Malory called 'The Third Face' is awesome. If you're a fan of good music (like for example Slowdive) you should check it out.

Also: life does not suck, even though it sometimes feels like it does.

Also: Ian Crause is possibly the greatest musician ever. If you don't know who Ian Crause is and who Disco Inferno were you should find out as soon as possible!

Listen: live can be improved by listening to the right music at the right time.

I plan to take up drawing and painting again some time in the near future.

That's it.

I've only been here for one day, but so far deviantART looks like a very nice place. I allready got some fav+'s and a few comment's. It's nice to be in a community and get feedback from talented artists and people generally interested in art. That's something i've been missing sice i left school.

Happy new year!
