I was going to count down the days until I leave via numbered pictures, but I don't want to anymore. Too much work, and to be frank, I fucking hate photography now. It was the one thing I did solely for my own enjoyment, and some people who I won't name tried to make me do it for theirs.

No quiero repetir lo que he dicho, entonces voy a quejar un poquito del acento que uso.

Alguien me dijo que es muy Baaaarceloooona, pero no sé por qué Conozco a algunas personas que usan esta intonación, pero ninguna es de Barcelona. Ni España. No sé por qué, pero hablan con el ritmo de esta ciudad, quizá a causa de sus poderes magicales de hablar portugués también? No no pienso que podría hablar portugués, sería demasiado fácil usar mi castellano para aprenderlo y mezclar los idiomas. Ya confundo español con ruso y francés al cambiar idiomas ráidamente

Et maintenant je vais écrire quelque petite chose en français pour le plaisir de =paleypeach. Je n'ai pas utilisé mon français dès mon dernier examen de français en mai, et je n'aime pas que j'aie perdu autant. Réalment, il n'y a pas beaucoup de moyens pour practiquer ici, et j'aurai besoin de lire quelque chose, mais je n'aime pas la litterature, c'est trop inutile pour moi ¬¬

A-No Russia trip. - On account of C.
B-No internets for the time being. - Success! I feel like a moron for not knowing how to do this, but I am one step closer to conquering Ubuntu The driver could not legally come pre-installed in Ubuntu so I just had to find the switch to turn it on
C-Health scare. - I had an inflammation in a lymph node ten days before departure, it was painful, I was exhausted and anemic, the on-campus doctor, inexperienced but good-intentioned, told me to push back the Russia trip (which unfortunately meant canceling it) to ensure that it was not anything serious. Ten days of antibiotics later and I was fine
D-No university. - Rejected from the only school in the state with a degree in Russian that does not cost $45K/year.

Will explain later, once the test results are in.

First week of school OVER. This is going to be a challenging semester.

I'm liking all but one of my classes. HIST 456 - Soviet Union. It's a lot of reading, not a lot of writing, not a lot of discussing (how can you in a class with 35 people? ). I feel like I'm going to wind up doing a lot of reading and listening, then receive an A for one paper that doesn't really prove that I learned anything. I'm considering dropping it.

BUT. The subject matter interests me. And this is one of the few opportunities I'll get to take a class about it.

Other classes:

RUS 202 - Intermediate Russian: Challenging. Not taught quite the way I'd like it, and I'm the only person in the class! I feel like I'm going to do a lot of work, and not get a lot in return. So I'm going to finish up the semester as quickly as I can and worry about doing the class my way after that.

FR 311 - French Conversation - WOW. Awesome class. The teacher is great, but her voice is painful. I can't really blame her for that. This is the first class I've taken where I feel like the teacher really knows how to get people to communicate - by banning English from the classroom. We actually get points knocked off our grade for every time she catches us speaking in English. If we don't know a word, we have to explain it in French, the way we would have to in France if we don't know a word.

FR 312- French Composition - Good class. Native speaker teaching it. Writings get progressively harder throughout the semester, culminating in a final dissertation on a topic of our choice.

LLEA 356 - 20th Century Russian Arts and Culture - Good class. With my Russian teacher. Interesting material, although the reading is a little dry. Weekly papers, final research paper (roughly 2000 words). I'll learn a lot, and this is the only reason I'm really hanging onto HIST 456 - it's a great compliment to it. Maybe I could come up with some way to combine the two classes to my own benefit, doing half the work and getting twice the returns

SPAN 403 - Advanced Conversation and Composition (Spanish) - Decent class, filled with morons. as usual Hopefully I'll be able to make the most of this - I've only got 5 classes left for a degree after it I feel like I'm already so fluent in the language, it irks me that I can't just use the goddamn thing all day every day to build my confidence. And it doesn't help that the two classes we've had so far have been nothing but listening to the teacher lecture I HATE classes like that. YOU CAN NOT LEARN HOW TO SPEAK A LANGUAGE WITHOUT ACTUALLY USING IT. Anybody that thinks you can is a complete and total moron, but I'm so close to a degree at this point, I don't even care anymore.

HIST 456 - Talked about it. Dry, but if I go the extra mile I can probably make it worth it.

Also, I've pushed French back to a heavy minor. I'm going to focus on linguistics for my minor, because the major is nothing but literature

This semester is going to kick my ass. I'm PUMPED! I never learn anything in classes that don't make me hate myself and want to die - and from the looks of it, I have several that will do just that this semester.

Filled out the appropriate forms for the double major (Russian/Spanish). Knocked French back to a minor - may double-minor, French and Russian Area Studies (which would require me to take like... one extra class )

On the non-academic front, there were a few minor regrets with this break, but overall I'm happy with how it turned out. Very productive, and now I'm on a schedule that will make it very easy to slide into the new semester.

Also, I'm boycotting elevators My building's elevator stalled out on me on the fifth floor while going down, and this place is so decrepit and old that I don't want to risk getting back in there again

9 floors up and down, as many times a day as I need to take them I should have amazing legs by the end of this semester

Also, reading a good book. Three of them, actually

El Enigma de París - yeah, it's aimed at readers a few years younger than me, but my castellano is suffering after this past semester, and I need to nurture it back into literature gradually.

A Small Corner of Hell: Dispatches from Chechnya - required for HIST 456, this book has opened my eyes in ways I didn't know possible

Spent all yesterday cleaning. Now my room is clean and organized, I can't wait until this time in four months when it'll look like a college dorm room again

Also: `laurart is now officially currency. Any purchases must be made in `laurarts from this point forward - the exchange rate is 1000 `laurarts for $50USD. Figure out what that means for whatever you need.

I have a Spanish class, required for my major, called Grammar and Composition.

My teacher doesn't speak Spanish as well as I do, doesn't understand the grammar she's teaching, and enforces the five-paragraph "essay" we had to write in elementary school.

My Spanish is worse than before I started taking this class.

In fact, this class is so bad, that I'm considering dropping the Spanish program all together, and switching to German, of which I know none.

Je n'aime pas du tout le Codéine, parce qu'il me fait très fatigué, mais c'est la seule chose qui m'aide. L'infermière me dit que le problème était que mes allergies avaient mantifesté sous forme du toux, parce que le mucus n'était pas vert - il était claire et jaune.

Mais cette infermière n'était pas le plus intelligent du monde. Elle m'a dit que si j'avais une infection virale, elle me donnerait les antibiotiques, et tout le monde sait que les antibiotiques ne sont pas capable de traiter une infection virale. En fait, ils font pire la situation, une autre chose que tout le monde sait.

Donc je prends du Codéine (lequel est horrible, au fait. Il m'assome pendant un demi-jour), et j'éspère avoir me rétabli avant lundi. Je ne peux plus manquer de classes.

The toilet was running tonight, and like every American I know how to stop it. I popped the lid off the tank and leaned it up against the wall (d'oh #1), and proceeded to untangle the chain.

While I was untangling the chain, the lid fell over, right on my foot (d'oh #2), shattering into five or six big chunks and a million smaller ones.

So I stopped the toilet from running, and proceeded to pick up the pieces of ceramic that littered the tiny, cramped, bathroom, and cut my thumb open on one of them. (d'oh #3).

Who would have thought a tiny nick like that would bleed so much? D:

But all in all it's been a productive week/day/whatever. My Russian and French are improving by leaps and bounds every day, my Spanish kinda plateaued a while back, so it's rough adding vocab where I can, and I've taught myself the two Japanese syllabaries, which means all I have left is grammar, vocab and 1945 kanji and I'll be as fluent as a high-school graduate

Plus I taught myself 30 more pages of chemistry. I'm almost back to the level I should have been at at the end of the year of chemistry I took in high school, four years ago

But , I'm not really having a great time this semester I'm so busy I don't even have time to work a few hours a week

But I'm blaming Chemistry for that one. I'll get a job scrubbing dishes in a few weeks, learn me some Japanese (maybe work in a Japanese restaurant scrubbing dishes? ), then transfer to a high-paying job as the personal interpreter for a crime syndicate.

Or I'll start serving Whatever

In the meantime, I haven't had much time for browsing, so I'm going to spend a few minutes finding features

Classes are keeping me BUSY !

Declaring majors hopefully this and/or next week

Teaching myself a little Japanese. Not because I'm a , but because it would help me get a job. Plus it would be easy to learn it here, what with... all of the Japanese people. I might teach myself and then place into a higher level, not that I've ever done that before

All I know so far is KONNICHIWA DESU DESU NE =^_^= DESSSSSSSSSSU, but I'll get it sooner or later

On a lighter note, I have a feature. She's a wonderful Swiss photographer whose name I don't know, but you can view her awesome pictures at her account, ~melodies-ch.

She generally uses a very painterly depth of field in her gallery, which consists mostly of beautiful nature shots. I'm digging the colors, the creaminess of the bokeh... everything!

When I got out of the woods, I looked down at my legs, and saw that I was COMPLETELY covered in thousands of chiggers

So I frantically brushed them off as best I could, spent the next 45 minutes walking and brushing and walking and brushing until I got most of them off, and saw The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

It was pretty much just a glorified episode, but I enjoyed it

And now the chigger bites have kicked in, and I can't stop scratching

Not the first time this has happened, so I'll live

It's when people realize that the year is almost half over, and that they haven't gotten crackin' on any of those resolutions they made around January 10th. So they overcompensate for a month or so, lose interest, claim they've done it, and call it a year.

Well, I figured I would do something different

Rather than center my NYRs around the same time as everybody else, I'm going to give myself a list of doable tasks to have completed by May 25, 2009

I have many. But here is the truncated and paraphrased version:

- Leer la serie completa de Harry Potter en español.
- Take pictures EVERY WEEK. Regardless of whether or not I want to. It's free, it's possible, I'm doing it, damn it.
- Hit 30,000 pageviews, get a DD, or win a photography competition.
- Get back into writing.
- In one year, be as fluent in French as I am now in Spanish, and be as fluent in Russian as I am now in French.
- Elevate the heartrate every day, even if only for a few minutes! D:
- Other various things!

So what about you guys What do you want to have accomplished in a year?

1.) To prevent the messages from piling up while I'm gone, I've decided it might be smart to log in every once in a while to clear my box

2.) Originally I had created a second account, where I could have anonymity. I've been using it a little bit, but I'm going to start moving stuff over here, deleting it from the new account. I'll gradually transition back to ~homedoggieo... I just needed a break. Big time.

3.) I'm not completely back yet (forum-whoring will resume Summer 2008), but I'll upload a few new shots so you guys can see what I've been up to
