It's always nice to see Eames get some spotlight, and Bobby was definitely back on his mark. Plus as soon as I saw the first guest star name I realised that my two favourite Roberts were there (Detective Goren and Raul Esparza, who was stellar as Bobby in Company). What an astonishingly creepy performance!

in other news, i got fired from my current position and switched back to my old department.

yay.

Well. The semester is winding down pretty quickly now. This weekend I have a paper to write for Shakespeare class ... and a sonnet to write.

I had a plan for an art nouveau triptych of Katherine, Viola, and Desdemona ... but it looks like I'll be improvising, and instead do a Disney-style trio. I had some ideas for Kate (black hair, hawkish features and a feather design on her clothing), Viola (auburn-ish hair and in drag of course!), and Desdemona (probably in white, possibly blonde, and carrying the handkerchief and a willow branch).

So I'm taking Shakespeare this semester (I got blank stares from my family), and I sort of wanted to impress my professor (I read one of his essays last semester in my copy of The Tempest.

Anyway, as we finished an analysis of the Induction of The Taming of the Shrew, the situation brought up the fact that all of Shakespeare's plays were performed by men. So he was talking about guys in drag, and was saying that when he asked his past classes if they had ever seen a drag show--

--and idiot me raises her hand--

--while he finishes with, "no one would ever raise their hand."

silence.

*FACEPALM*

So, okay, it wasn't an actual show, but I've hung out with queens in and out of drag (drunk and sober, i may add).

Here are 12 lines of blank verse written as a class exercise for today:

Like two small wolves a pair of papillons
Do slumber, spar, and bay at ev'ry door:
My handsome Pip and beautiful one, Beau.
With slender legs so delicate, and paws
So dainty, turn`ed outward o'er the floor,
Their eyes like sloes; their tails are flags so white,
Which wave such prayers imploring one for treats,
Surrendering affection do they wag.
A butterfly Beau's face resembles with
A nose night-dark and moist: mon petit homme!
And gentle Pippin rises from the hearth;
Thus equine does he walk, the smallest horse.

And the past few days, I've been privately fangirling like mad. It was simply an amazing film. I wasn't sure what to expect since the hype seemed out-of-proportion, but it lived up to it and beyond, IMO. Yes, Heath Ledger gave a tour-de-force; everyone else was solid, too. Severely overlooked was my favourite Batman villain, Harvey "Two-Face" Dent. Story and design, performances, effects, and everything else were remarkable.
Testing the Artist's Comments for Art Nouveau Padme:

DESCRIPTION
Padmé Amidala from the STAR WARS saga, rendered in traditional art nouveau style, inspired by the work of Alphons Mucha.

BACKSTORY

In December of 2007, just before Greek Art class, I showed my friend Joetta a promotional photo from STAR WARS Episode II: Attack of the Clones; this one: [link] .

She immediately mentioned that it looked like an Alphons Mucha print. I loved the idea so much (as we are both huge art nouveau fans), that I took it up as a personal project. She definately gets the dedication--This one's for you, Joetta!

So, while I was doing research in the library, I came across this print, "La Fleur": [link] , and it clicked.

The drawing phase was long and assiduous, but my final linework was pretty pleasing. After that, it was scanned into the computer and went to colouring (Photoshop, done on school computers after classes).

SYMBOLS

I knew I wanted to incorporate symbolism into this piece right away, from all three prequel films. The most obvious place to do so was in the hyperbola (styled as a mosiac, a Mucha-inspired move); here are repeated images of the japor pendant given to her by Anakin, and a version of the Naboo crest (this rendition is the one on the handmaiden battle dress belt buckle from Episode I). This represents Padmé's ambivalence between love and duty. The purple and red recall Amidala's royal costumes--"Thone Room" and "Leaving Coruscant."

The background gradient is meant to call up the colours of the Water Gown, her Episode III funerary dress. Apropriately, the white flowers you see in the corners are those which were strewn in her hair during the funeral.

The red roses, aside from being an obvious symbol, were present at the Varykino Lake Retreat, in stone urns that lined the walkways. And the orange borders are the sunset of Padmé and Anakin's wedding.

I know it's probably been done before, but it's a great challenge to study Natalie Portman's features and make her look distinctly stylised.

So I'm making some progress on my Art Nouveau Padme. I added a lot of detail to her dress and revised her hair. Jasmine, Aladdin = Mimi Marquez, Rent
Snow White = Fosca Ricci, Passion
Aurora, Sleeping Beauty = Eponine Thénardier, Les Misérables

Well let's see. So I don't go crazy and draw every female lead in my iTunes library ... (yet) Disney usually limits the princess spotlight to Belle, Aurora, Snow White, Jasmine, Ariel, and Cinderella.
Belle is taken ... She's Christine Daae (The Phantom of the Opera).

Ariel will be Wendla Bergmann (Spring Awakening).

Jasmine will be Mimi Marquez (Rent).

Hmm. Three left.

Elphaba Thropp (Wicked) needs to be in there. And Eponine Thenardier (Les Miserables). That leaves one spot up for grabs. The nominees are:

Dot (Sunday in the Park with George)
Johanna (Sweeney Todd)
Fosca (Passion)
Kate Monster (Avenue Q)
Amneris (Aida)
