I was feeling frustrated and just spontaneously wrote out a prayer. Then I thought I'd post it, 'cuz... why not.

Some of you will be skeptical, but that prayer was totally answered immediately. I remembered something I had been putting off for a while: a fragment wish to go through the gospels and write down all the straightforward commands of Jesus. You know. What did He emphasize? What did He think was worth repeating?

I was already feeling better before I began. Then texted me.

Thought I'd share, 'cuz it made me laugh.


I am happily enjoying Blake's hospitality tonight. He and I are going to babysit the dogs and play video games. What are your plans tonight?

George loves all his characters, and wants them to have posses. George loves all his posses, and wants each member to have names. George loves all his readers, and so expects them to learn about 300 ridiculous names per book.

If you are nice to a thirteen-year-old girl, and give her the option of saying no, it's not rape. She'll totally want you.

George attended an all-boys' school.

Open mouths remind George of vagina(s).

Prostitutes remind George of vagina(s).

Feminists remind George of vagina(s).

Sluts remind George of vagina(s).

War reminds George of vagina(s).

George isn't sexist, because his female characters have distinct personalities.

George doesn't hate gay people, but he is absolutely terrified that he might be gay.

George likes the stabby weapons. I wonder what those remind him of?

George loves to describe every gushing, bleeding wound he inflicts upon his characters. Probably because they remind him of

George is obviously just like Tolkien, if not better.

The Personifid Invasion by R.E. Bartlett
Bartlett is a New Zealander with a really fun universe full of potential storylines. As I read, I keep imagining Genndy Tartakovsky (the creator of Samurai Jack) adapting it. There's a colorful cast of characters, a fairly well-developed world for them to romp in, and!! robots! With human souls and demons living inside them! That being said, I have some complaints: the villains are a little two-dimensional, and the conversations are a bit stilted, like fanfiction. Haven't finished it yet.

The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman
We got this book for free in pre-marital counseling. It really is all that it's cracked up to be. Very insightful and useful. Chapman repeats himself a lot, I think to make his book longer, but it's still not that long and I'd highly recommend it. Jared and I had fun reading it together.

A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin
This is the sequel to A Game of Thrones (upcoming HBO series w00t!) which I loved and which inspired all sorts of un-Christian hatred in me for the bad guys. I love the way Martin creates no-win situations of choosing between love and honor, and I love that a lot of the bad guys are sympathetic and a lot of the good guys are awful. Like a lot of authors, though, Martin is COMPULSIVE about naming EVERY SINGLE MINOR CHARACTER that waltzes through his universe. And in this book, his sex addiction really shines through. Martin can sexualize just about anything, and loves to mention rape. In fact, we got to mention TWICE that a very minor character, a teenage girl, was raped "have a hundred times." The ending is unfulfilling.
But! Only eight bucks!

The Marble Faun by Nathaniel Hawthorne
This could make a really creepy movie. I love the dark suspense, and by putting his characters in Italy, Hawthorne ensured that he would have lots of cool settings for his story. Unfortunately, the OTHER half of the story reads more like someone's really boring slideshow about their trip to Europe, and Hawthorne over-spiritualizes EVERYTHING (candles, silence, laughter, and especially all women, albeit in a flattering way). I haven't finished it. Think I'll Cliffsnotes it from here.

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
It's better than I remember it being, back when I had to read it as a high school freshman. It really is a good story with deep, true, and valuable insights. Too bad writers used to get paid by the word, though, and not by the sale. I don't think the man's ever written a simple sentence. I'm still working on finishing this one, too.

Church History Volume One: From Christ to Pre-Reformation by Everett Ferguson
I am so fuzzy on the early and Medieval philosophies that shaped the denominations we have today. Every now and then I read a short chapter and learn something new (like the doctrines on Mary's perpetual virginity, which didn't originate until about the 4th century). Church history is worth knowing if you're a Christian. Like the author points out, this way we can avoid the mistakes our predecessors made. I'll probably sift through this book for the next year or two.
