Sometimes days come and go and they mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. Sometime days come and they change everything. My grandmother passed away two days ago. She meant the world to me but I'm not sad because she went out like a real lady.

In the haze of things I realized how much time is slipping away; how little I have and how much I owe; how much I have and how much more I want. It's funny how selfish we become when we grieve.

V.6 Woes

Irritatingly enough, my journal layout--though it hasn't change and all my former entries work just peachy--decided to not work when I updated it this last time. Why?? Because DA wants my side label in the foot instead of the head. Bah. Pfft. Stop messing with the stuff that already worked.

So... I am alive.

Hm... what's new... I got married and moved. Was forced to quit going to graduate school while I support my small but very brave family. Life has been pretty hard but not all-together unpleasant. The biggest issue is that I've been depressed lately. Oddly enough, it hasn't been easy to work 9-5 every day doing what I love. It's so draining.

Every now and again I come across some time to work on my own projects but its so far and few between that it's hardly rewarding at all. At this point just making it through the week has been enough. I never read anymore and hardly ever find the inspiration to draw or vectorize stuffs. I'm almost sure it's a phase but it's been one of the longest phases I've ever gone through.

I've finally, after a year of work, finished putting up my graphic design site: Chapter19. Now all I have to do is continue to find the time to put up new articles. At the very least, it's done and it was for me.

So... I'm just going to keep on keeping on.

New Job

So out of the blue... I got a job! I'm the newest Graphic Designer at WebFeet IM in San Luis Obispo, Ca. Yay! I have to say that I'm really enjoying the experience of working around other creative people. The firm is small enough to have a morals and large enough to have awesome projects to work on. I'm a very lucky individual and expect that (even though it's going to drastically cut into the time I used to have) I'm going to enjoy working there for many years to come.

New Semester

School started against recently and between my new job and a new semester I'm really tight on time. It's funny... I used to think that I would always put work first, school second, and personal relationships third... but the more I get into the whole "adult"/"family" thing... the more I'm realizing that it's not what you produce from day to day that is the key to happiness, but what you come home to at the end of the day.

New Hobby

I've recently started on a new hobby--stock illustration. I can't quite post any of my new art here on dA just yet because I want to debut them first at istockphoto.com where I will be selling them... but afterwards I might share just because I like the feedback and a sold print here or there will definitely give love to my pocketbook. I'm waiting to get a small collection before I take the leap into selling my vectors. Hopefully by January I'll be set.

Okay... that's all for now. I have hundreds of new pieces from the people I watch to check out, so very soon I'll be pushing the work of someone new here at the journal. In the mean time... just love me for being good at procrastination.

Hi everyone!

So summer semester ended for me about a week ago. I got myself an awesome set of posters, a bunch of new ideas, a newly re-lit passion for my art/work, and an identity set I'm finally happy with. I'm pumped.

Oh yeah, a few weeks ago, my fiance and I adopted a little Lhasa Apso from a rescue group. He sort of selected us we were there looking at Terrier. Oddly enough, he was totally unresponsive to the name the rescue folks had given him, but Vim... oh he likes Vim. So I guess a few months back when I made "Vim & Him" I was totally channeling him to come to us. He even looked like the little dog before we cut his hair. He's the best dog ever--except he likes to sneeze on people. It's kinda cute.

Anyway, I'm just posting a little personal update along with my new journal design. (Gotta theme everything now!) I'll have more soon along with the work of another artist I absolutely adore. Until then!

School Daze

So, school started for me again and my silly face didn't think to check on if the summer semester would be condensed or not. So I've got too much work in too short of a period of time to feasibly do it in. No worries. I'm magical. I'll be posting some of my better school projects here eventually so I guess stay tuned. I've been lazy lately. Actually, playing Guild Wars way too much and freelancing for clients in between. Happy Year of the Fire Boar

I'm not Chinese, but I'm close enough. When I was little, if there was an Asian person in the room (or general vicinity), they would invariably compliment my mother on having such a beautiful "Asian" daughter. She would then correct them and they would get disappointed because somewhere in the back of their head they were banking on having a mate for their son. A stereotypical comment perhaps, but on at least a few occasions they've admitted it. So there's a little tidbit from my past: my pale skin, dark hair, and cheeks that were so puffy they made my eyes slant often left me mistaken for another nationality. It still hasn't gone away -- especially when I smile.

Anyway... so today I'm all jealous because a few of my friends are out eating at the best kind of Chinese buffets that exist: homemade ones. Mmmm mmm. Those lucky lucky bastards. So... go enjoy some roast pig and read up on this year's predictions: [link]

Happy Valentine's Day

Um... yeah. Not much is going on here. My man whined about my birthday, our anniversary, and Valentine's day all falling within two weeks so I'm not getting anything today except dinner at home. That's okay though, he puts up with enough of my crap all year long... as long as he makes it to the next V-Day, I know he luffs me.

Lately I've been feeling uninspired. Kind of like the world took all the wind out of my little artistic sails. I've been trying to come with ideas for sets to work on, but I can't think of anything really innovative. I was thinking of things like the zodiac, flowers, colors, I don't know... it's so overdone... any ideas?

Herbal Powers Unite!!

So my doctor said it was going to take 3 months for my broken wrist to heal but my mother, who's an herbalist, said she could get it to heal in a third the time if I took all my extracts, herbal pills, and vitamins every day and put good mental chi into. I was like "Sure, okay, whatever. I have no thing better to do while I wait anyway." One month later, my bone is healed! Witchcraft ftw!

So much to do, so little mobility...

Over the last month I've been sketching for a new theme for my chapter19.com portfolio web site. I'm planning on turning that into a design resource, quitting freelance design forever, and moving my personal portfolio to humanskin.net, which is now just a shrine for my fiance's awesomely convenient web language. Now that I have my wrist back, I'll be able to bring these ideas into fruition.

Speaking of fruit... this April I will be creating 100 limited, signed, numbered, and hand-bound editions of my "Fruit" book which I will be offering for sale. I'll be posting more information about this later on this month.

What's Up?

Finally got off my butt and put some CSS into my journal. It currently works with Firefox. Do I care if it works in other browsers? No -- you shouldn't be using anything but Firefox anyway because they all suck. So... my CSS isn't as pretty as everyone else but it modifies dA's original color scheme and layout well enough to make my happy with it.

I'm currently working on a book about fruit which will feature my photography and some other fun facts. I should have that completed by the second week in December. Each book will be handmade, hard-bound, signed, numbered, and limited to 100 copies. So that should be fun. Note me for more information.

School's been sucking up every ounce of creativity and time that I have so I can't say I'm working on anything else new, but I have been adding to my sketch book and hopefully by the time my winter break comes I'll have the time and drive to put up some new art pieces. I'm just getting old and tired.

Anyone considering having a full-time freelance web development job? Watch out. The clients primarily treat you like poo, rarely respect the amount of effort you actually put into designing their site, and never do they ever pay you what you're actually worth.

Anyway, my boyfriend's brother is coming into town this weekend, so I'm pretty sure I'll have some free time to actually create art (as opposed to creating crap). At the very least, I'll be back with a better update with my ongoings in the last month or so. I'll definitely get to my favorite folks with some love before the weekend's out. Until then, I loves you all.

On Another Note:
I'm poor.

No seriously, so if you notice a small lag in my activity over the next few weeks, it's because I'm planning on swamping myself with more than my usual load of freelance graphic and web design projects. Many of these project either include an NDA, or they are just not appropriate to share with the masses until the client finalizes and launches the design themselves. I doubt that my extra work will severely impact my activity as much as I'm letting on, but better safe than sorry. You all could help me out buy purchasing some of my very cheaply priced prints... but no pressure or worries. I just need to get on that professional thing that I've been neglecting and putting off for the last few months.

Futhermore:
I don't know if I mention it enough, but I truly love you all. Without the encouragement and insightful critiques that I have received from the community since I joined dA, I would not be nearly as inspired to create. For quite a few years, I completely turned my back on creating art for my own personal pleasure and since joining the community, I have not only regained the love that I lost a long time ago but have also found a voice and style that I am comfortable with and proud to create in. I have also met so many interesting and talented people and friends that I truly feel blessed for having the entire experience available to me. Rock on everyone! You're all so talented and absolutely inspirational in my eyes.

I really love the beach. It's beautiful to look and fun to escape to with large mocha four shot espresso icy drinks. The Pacific ocean is awesome.

I had a Thai soup today that smelled like my family's dog Leia's face smells (i.e. horrible), but tasted exceptionally good. The only problem is it left an aftertaste similar to its smell and after 3 Colgate brushings ended up tasting much like licorice. Strange.

My boyfriend's mom is really annoying (and crazy).

I like cheese and kung fu movies.

I missed cookies.

Procrastination Pride:
I've been putzing around for the last week with an application project one of my clients handed to me. I'm really stuck on how to design it and I hardly understand what exactly this thing is supposed to do, but I suppose once it's done and working the final result will be really cool. Either way, yeay for procrastination. I've learned lots by not working and watching MythBusters instead.

How do you all procrastinate?

I personally like to watch TV, sleep, and draw anything but what I'm being paid to draw. Okay, enough of that. Happy birthday to Frankie who will never see this and I'm out to continue my procrastination elsewhere. Toodley-ooo.

So... we got a sweet apartment right next to the beach and finally got our own internet connection set up today, so I'll be active once again. I'm going to be really busy for awhile, so I may not get back to everyone's messages immediately, but I'll be doing my best. I've been feeling much better now that we're not living in a hotel room. I do want to thank everyone for their support and well wishes during my move and a special thanks and howdy-ho to ~phoenixartdesign for the random and unexpected feature.

New Year:
January 31st was my birthday. I hit the big 24 and am feeling surprisingly not old. I think it's directly attributed with the fact that the weather here is awesome and I'm no longer living with my parents. February 3rd was my boyfriend and my third anniversary. We had an awesome meal--outside--and a couple of bottles of excellent wine. That was great until we discovered public transportation shut down for construction at 10pm and we got horribly lost in the city for a few hours, but it was still fun. On February 6th, I start work again on some awesome new projects scored by my best and most reliable client and I'm really excited about the really big names I'm going to have the opportunity to do kick-ass work for. All in all, the clouds have parted and the sky is in fact blue.

New Art:
I've decided that though I really enjoy the current style of most of my art work, I would like to experiment with new stuff, so please expect some wonderful practice/play time art pieces from me in the immediate future (as well as, of course, some delightful failures). More soon!

So... I decided to pack up all my stuff and move 3000 miles away with only my most prized possessions to start a new life. I'm in a hotel; I have no home and am quickly running out of money. My computer with all of my un-backed up art is sitting in the trunk of a car, in an unattended parking lot, in a ghetto. I'm dirty. I'm tired. A small part of me thinks everything is going to be great, but a much larger part sees nothing but struggle and poverty in my future. The drive was really cool, but my boyfriend is not all creatively inclined, so I had no one there to really appreciate the inspiration of the experience with me. Much of it was then stifled and forgotten by silly conversation and long hours of listening to horribly obnoxious music and zoning out.

Break out the Tin Foil:
I absolutely adore the work of a particular artist on this site. However, I'm beginning to feel that I'm either being spied on or that collective conciousness is an evil bitch who never liked me. The last 3 deviations of this particular artist were sketched by me last month. I never scanned, shared, or began production work on these sketches and then *poof* there they were - created, completed, and done a million times better than I would have done them. I shit you all not: they are 98% identical to what I drew up in my book last month. I'm pretty depressed over it. To me it's equal to having your baby ripped out of your belly before you even get a chance to decide if you want it or not. I guess I would have only fucked up the idea and it's my own damn fault for not working on the concept to completion when I had it. I also guess it doesn't matter anyway, it's done and now 3 of my ideas are as good as toilet paper - I would hate to produce them now and be a "follower" or a "copycat" or any of that crap. It just bothers me. I've always felt like I sucked at art and when a situation like this occurs, it just makes me feel even smaller and more insignificant and unoriginal than before (even if I know I had the idea first). Bah.

Okay, that's enough whining. All the things stated above are true - I really do feel that way - but I'm sure much of what makes me want to cry about it is just me being moody and frustrated. I will survive and this too will pass. I don't know when I'll be settled enough to create any new art, or if my clients or boyfriend will allow me to have enough free personal time to do so, but when I do, it'll be here - mah love to you all.

Yippee! Hooray!
I just got my favorite movie on DVD today. When I was in college, I was exposed to: The Adventures of Prince Achmed and it's been my favorite old school animation ever since. I think the work Lotte Reiniger has done should live on as an absolute achievement in animation for all eternity and I highly recommend this film for any and all enthusiasts of old films and animation. I'm so happy I have something other than Clue to watch when I fall alseep now. Yeay!

Going to California!
In the next couple of weeks my boyfriend and I will be finally moving out of my parent's house in Pennsylvania and into our own place in San Francisco, Cali-f-ing-fornia. Though I'm not gone yet, when I do go I should be offline for about 2 weeks, so there won't be much word from me during that time. I'll post a goodbye when the time comes. I can't wait!
