I got my final project grades and my final course grades today. 3 distinctions for 'Realisation' and Distinction 2 Merits for the whole year so together with the rest of my qualifications that takes me up to 360 ucas points. I'm a very happy bunny at the moment .

But I thought that as I won't have access to a darkroom for a year I don't want to let shops develop my photos because I don't trust them so I might as well make a slight investment in the form of a Nikon D70. I'm going to regret this... *sighs* I am now paying twenty pounds a month for the rest of my life lol. Expect digital photos as of next week, I still need to buy the memory card . I'm going to miss the darkroom though . Also anyone think it might be worth getting a prints account anytime in the future? Realisation

The intent of this project is to investigate how people cope as they experience changes in life. Changes occur in all life stages but my main interest is how teenagers of my age group (17-19) cope as they realise they are approaching a stage when they will soon have to fend for themselves. It will be personal but also represent feelings everyone has while preparing for independence.

It will consist of a series of self-portraits; giving a larger scope for the concept. Work will be produced for exhibition and all possibilities of display will be considered. As this is a piece of time based art it is important that all images are sequential enabling clear communication for the viewer.

Over the holidays I have spent time watching films, researching artists and listening to music. Particular influences have been ‘American Beauty’ by director Sam Mendes and the work of Francesca Woodman.

The content of ‘American Beauty’ has intrigued me for years. The somehow psychotic yet lovable characters is a theme I intend to explore further. The film constantly isolates its characters through windows, imprisoning them and reflects them in mirrors, maybe trying to make them realise their fate.

Francesca Woodman constantly battled with self-realisation and produced an eyrie series featuring a girl trapped in a glass box, her blurry figure just distinguishable as she tries to escape or maybe draw attention to her sorry state. Her behaviour too seems almost psychotic as she struggles to come to terms with her femininity but the viewer can also find compassion.

Other influences include music and lyrics “I won’t let this build up inside of me” and also the book ‘Glue’ by Irvine Welsh, which follows a group of people through the 70s to the 90s and is very nostalgic.

The first ideas I have had have surrounded the theme of framing and a want to escape but with hesitation.

Voyeurism has been a main interest; to achieve this I have considered faster methods of photography like Polaroid. With this being a time based art project I felt it would be more appropriate if the final images were originals, very personal and valuable. Polaroid captures that moment once and represents it on paper just a few seconds after the event occurring.

Week 1: Talk through with tutor, sketch out first ideas and prepare to shoot.
Week 2: Research relevant artists and collate in journal.
Week 3: Execute ideas and consider room for development.
Week 4: Refer to research and continue development of photos, considering different possible methods.
Week 5: Review of methods working towards final selection of series.
Week 6: Select final series.
Week 7: Make final alterations.
Week 8: Prepare for exhibition.

I intend to keep a full diary of the whole process, notes will be shown to tutors for advice and work shared with others for constructive criticism to take place for improvement to be made. Francesca Woodman


In general find it very hard to relate to any artist but when I saw Francesca Woodman’s series “On Being an Angel” I was in complete awe of her work. This essay will be focusing on her life and works and how they relate to my current work. Also how she connects to other artists of her time and now.

In my opinion she is one of the most accomplished artists of her age. By the time of her suicide on the 19th January 1981 at the age of 22 she had produced over 500 images, which “left her as one of photography’s quiet legends”.

Her interest in photography started at the young age of 13, and she had a natural talent for it. [link] This is one of the photographs she produced at the age of 13. I find this image very quirky; I feel it is almost as if the fogging of the negative was due to some supernatural being, a monster that Woodman was faced with in her everyday life, especially as it seems to be pointing towards and drawing in her left hand. Another aspect I found disturbing is that it is unclear as to which direction her head is pointing in, when cannot really tell whether she is looking at the camera with her hair over her face or if she is shying away in the other direction. On closer inspection this is just a photograph of a young girl trying something new she has found interested in. She has claimed to never have missed anything and to have paid attention to every detail in her photograph. In her later works there is no trace of a camera, giving her work a voyeuristic feel as if someone else is photographing her going about her daily rituals. However, here we notice that the pressure release cable is clearly visible. The statement of this picture being that she was wearing a cable knit jumper so it felt fitting to include the pressure release cable.

Of all the artists I have looked at so far I feel I can connect to her work the most. There have been many arguments that there are clues of her suicide within her work. Would such allegations have been made if she was still alive today? Does a person who knows her fate have a different reaction to someone who is freshly viewing the pieces with no knowledge of her life? I am not entirely convinced that there is evidence to show that she had planned her suicide all along. Looking into my own work, I produced a number of images of events that are relative to my life at that moment and true to the person I was at that time. I use art as a way of catharsis and often photograph, draw, or paint scenes that haunt me in my dreams. The image below is from my latest series I have named “Distortion of Normality”. [link] This idea came about after an argument with my mother, the figure dressed in black is a representation of her. I am seated in a wedding dress. Wedding dresses always bring forward this idea of happiness and normality in my view. As I am engaged at the moment this is a strong factor in my life, the only part I feel is normal. It is only natural for a parent to feel concerned about various changing situations concerning their children but this can often be very suffocating for the child involved when the parent starts to interfere. I shot this series to “clear the air” with my mother and try and put behind me these feelings I have from our arguments. I feel that maybe there is a certain element of this in Woodman’s work.

She is often compared to Cindy Sherman the only similarity between them being that they are the photographer and sitter in their works. Woodman's reasons for this were that she was the only one that was always available and she knew exactly what she wanted and felt that a model may not fully understand her intentions. They both show an interest in the female figure; however, this is where the similarity ends. Cindy Sherman wants to portray the stereotypical view of women at the time the photograph is captured; her work is hard to understand without some political insight of the time. ok this is gonna start looking like i love myself when i don't. i'm doing a series of images throughout the day, just woken up, make-up on and then finally back at home with my "mask" off. i'm just trying to get across that even if you appear to be happy you aren't and you put on a front for public. i'm probly not going to use half these images, they're only tester pieces. there's also going to be some text to go with the series but i'm not sure what yet, i've written 3 pieces so far, first time ever i got a pen a paper handy before i could forget lol. pretty poo at the moment though and this project needs to be in soon *sobs*.

these are the things i wrote earlier. by the way i'm no poet or writer, i've never tried to be this is just what was going through my head. i wasn't even fully conscious of what i was writing at the time, it's just like a diary entry really.

Some days I feel beautiful, like I could conquer the world. Today is not one of those days. I see myself for what I really am, ugly. I cover myself with make-up to hide those sallow eyes, hoping people will see past my true emotions and think I am truly beautiful. They do not, instead they see me as I am, scared as hell behind these sallow eyes.
